What is Jargon?
Definition
The language, esp. the vocabulary, peculiar to a particular trade, profession, or
group: medical jargon.
Unintelligible or meaningless talk or writing; gibberish.
Specialized language concerned with a particular subject, culture, or profession
The terminology or idiom of a particular activity or group
Jargon is the collective name for words that only make sense to certain people.
Examples
“Dow Jones Industrial Average”
This phrase will be understandable by people who trade on the stock
market
“H2O”
Most people understand this to mean “water” but it is science Jargon
“Integer”
To a mathematician (someone who uses numbers every day), this means
“a number”
IT Jargon
404 Error
Means “The webpage is not available”

A technology for Windows
Address Bar
A place where you can type a website address and your computer will load the
website
Adware
Software that displays advertisements
ADSL
A type of broadband connection (See also: Broadband)
Anti Virus
Protection against viruses (See also: Virus)
Application
Another word for program or software
Attachment
A file that is sent along with an email – usually a document or picture
Autocorrect
A program which corrects your spelling as you type
Back Button
A button that will take you back one step (See also: Undo Button)
Backup
A copy of documents and files, in case they get deleted
Bandwidth
The amount of data that can be downloaded
Bit
The smallest unit of memory
Bitmap, bmp
A way of saving pictures
Blog
Short for “Web Log” – a type of journal or diary that people can read on The Internet
Bluetooth
A way of sending files to and from mobile telephones
Boot
To start up a computer
bps
Bits Per Second – usually used to measure sound quality of MP3 files
Broadband
Very fast internet access
Browser
A program used to see The Internet
Bug
A error in a program, usually causes a computer to crash
Burning
To create a CD or DVD
Byte
8 bits, enough space to store a single character or number.
CD
Compact disc – usually used to store audio data (music)
CD Burner
A CD Drive that can write data onto CDs
Cell
A spreadsheet uses cells to store information (See also: Spreadsheet and Excel)
Character
A letter of the alphabet, a number, a space or punctuation mark
Click
Pressing down on one of the buttons on a mouse. Named because of the „clicking‟
noise a mouse makes when you press down on a button (See also: Double Click and
Mouse)
CMYK
Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Keystone black – standard colours used by a printer
Codec
A small program to tell the computer how to open certain files
Compression
A way of making files smaller. JPEG (Joint Photographic Expert Group), MP3 (Motion
Pictures Expert Group, audio Layer 3), GIF (Graphic Interchange format) and zip are
examples
Cookie
Information stored on your computer about the websites you have visited
CPU
Central Processing Unit – the brain of the computer
Crash
When a computer stops working, it has crashed
Cursor
A flashing shape on the monitor or computer screen. Usually controlled using the
mouse (See also: Mouse)
Cyberspace
Another name for The Internet
Data
Documents, pictures, files, etc
Desktop
A place for icons and shortcuts. Also has a background image (See also: Wallpaper)
Dialogue Box
A window that pops up to tell you something about your computer (See also:
Window)
Digital
Anything related to computers
Digital Camera
A camera that takes pictures which can be viewed using the computer
Directory
A folder for storing files, on a computer
Domain
An internet address that is owned by a company
Dongle
A USB device used to connect to a network wirelessly (example: Vodaphone USB
dongle)
DOS
Used to type cryptic commands into a computer
Double click
Pressing down on a button on the mouse twice, very quickly. (See also: Click and
Mouse)
Download
To copy a file onto a computer
Drag and Drop
Clicking on something, moving the mouse and then letting go of the mouse button will
move a file around on screen.
Driver
A small program used by Windows to control hardware (I.E Sound or video card)
DVD
Digital Versatile Disc – usually used to store video data (films)
DVD Drive
A device that can read DVD discs
DVD RW, DVD Writer
A DVD Drive that can write data onto DVDs
A way of sending messages to people, using computers
Excel
A program used to create spreadsheets – useful in accounting

A three letter code at the end of a file name. This tells you what type of file it is

Frequently Asked Questions – a file that lists answers to frequently asked questions

The way that files are stored on a drive

A browser, like Internet Explorer, but easier to use and faster
Firewall
A program that protects your computer
Flash
A program used to display animations and video over The Internet (Example, youtube)
Free Space
The amount of space left on a drive
Freeware
Software that you can use for free – without having to pay for it
Gigabyte, GB
1000 Megabytes (1,000,000 Kilobytes)
GHz
Giga Hertz – a measure of the speed of a computer, the higher the better
Graphics
Anything that appears on the monitor or computer screen
Graphics Card
Specialist hardware that controls the monitor or computer screen
Hard Disk
Where all the main files are stored on a computer
Homepage
The first page that appears when you load up The Internet
HTML
The computer language that The Internet is written in
Hung

A way of connecting computers together

An extremely small computer; smaller than a laptop
Office Suite
Programs that are used in an office (Example, Word, Powerpoint, Excel)

Operating System
This is the program that runs all of the other programs (Example, Windows 7)
Overwrite
Save over an existing file, with a new one. Usually used when making changes to a

Patch
An update for a program, used to fix errors or bugs
PC
Personal Computer
Portable Document Format – used to store books on a computer
Peripheral
Anything that plugs into a computer
Phishing
A scam, of fraud, commonly through email
Picture File
This file contains a picture or photograph
Pixel
Picture Element – small dots used by the computer screen to display images
Pixelated
A picture that is of very bad quality
Plasma
A type of monitor or computer screen
Pop-Up
A form of advertising used on The Internet. They can be very annoying
Powerpoint
A program for creating presentations
Presentation
A file that is used to present information (See also: Powerpoint)
Processor

A list of instructions for the computer. Anything that you do on a computer, is done
using a program
QWERTY
The standard English keyboard layout (See also: Keyboard)
RAM
Random Access Memory – This is used as temporary storage when running programs.
It is also called Memory
Red X
A button in the top right corner of the screen. This will close the program you are using
Readme
A file that tells you all about a program
Read-only
A file that cannot be changed
Reboot
To shut down the computer and start it up again. Usually to fix a crash
Recycle bin
A place where files go when they are deleted

Red, Green, Blue – The three colours used by a monitor or computer screen
Right Click
Pressing down on the button on a mouse that is on the right
ROM
Read Only Memory – Memory which contains data which cannot be changed
(Example, DVD)

Really Simple Syndication – a program that brings news and information to you
Safe Mode
A way of starting a computer when the Operating System is broken
Save
A way of storing files on a computer
Screen Saver
A program that is used to stop the monitor or computer screen from breaking
Scroll
A way of moving something around on the monitor or computer screen
Search Box
A way of using a search engine from your browser (See also: Search Engine and
Browser)
Search Engine
A website that will help you find something on The Internet (Example: Google)
Security Suite
Programs that will protect your computer from viruses
Shockwave
A program used to create animations, games and special effects for The Internet
Shortcut
A type of file that loads another file, so that you don‟t have to look for it
Shut Down
The way to turn off your computer, safely
Software
A program that runs on a computer
Sound File
A way of saving music or sound on a computer
Soundcard
Specialist hardware that produces sound on a computer
Spam
Useless or junk email
Spreadsheet
A useful file for accounting (See also: Excel)
Spyware
A program that records what you do on your computer
Stand By
The computer stays on, but uses very little power

The button on the lower left hand side of the monitor or computer screen

System Tray
The lower right hand area of the monitor or computer screen. The most useful

A way of having more than one window open at once

This in on the bottom of the monitor or screen, and has the Start Button and System
Tray on it
Text File
A file that contains only text
TFT
Thin Film Transistor – a type of monitor or computer screen
Toolbar
A strip of icons which provide useful tools

Information about a file or program
Torrent
A way of downloading files to your computer that is very quick
Total Size
All of the space a drive has
Turn Off

Undo Button
A button that will reverse an action (See also: Back Button)
Uninstall
A way of removing programs from the computer
Upgrade
Making a computer better, by replacing parts
Unknown files
This is a file that Windows does not know anything about
Upload
A way of sending files from your computer (The opposite of Download)
USB
A way to connect many peripherals to your computer
Virus
A program that has been made, that will cause problems with your computer
Wallpaper
A picture on the computer‟s desktop (See also: Desktop)
Webcam
A video camera that can be connected to your computer
Website
A page of information on The Internet
WiFi
A way of connecting a computer to The Internet, wirelessly
Window
Shows you the files on your computer
Work Sheet
A single sheet of data in a spreadsheet (See also: Spreadsheet and Excel)
Word Document
A file created by Word, and is a text document (for example, this booklet) (See also:
Word)
Word Processor
A program used to create documents (Example: Word)
Worm
Similar to a virus (See also: Virus)
Zip File
A compressed file that takes less space on a drive
