Singapore’s Government made a commitment to become the world’s hydro hub with state-of-the-art technology and has chosen a partner that is as serious and dedicated to achieving this goal

The impending need for the country to be fully self sufficient in water supply requires an advanced water management system to be built. This has pushed open an opportunity for Singapore to invest heavily and become the global hub for water treatment technologies, producing crystal clean water, good enough for drinking.

When PUB, Singapore’s national water agency, embarked on this daring NEWater project, Siemens built a demonstration plant in Bedok to show that reuse was possible, and that the technology was efficient. The close partnership between Siemens and PUB has since led us to identify three research projects for collaboration: membrane technology, sludge treatment processes and water production optimi-zation from NEWater facilities.

In recognition of Siemens’ strength in R&D for water technologies, the Singapore Environment and Water Industry Development Council awarded Siemens a $4 million R&D grant in June 2008. Siemens will use the grant to develop an innovative seawater desalination techno-logy that is expected to reduce energy consumption by 50%.

A Partnership that Flows The Deep Tunnel Sewerage System draws a forward-looking blueprint for Singapore and the rest of Asia

Beneath homes, offices, schools - an intricate network of tunnels will be flowing with used water channeled to one single destination. Settling for just a while in a centralized water reclamation plant built on reclaimed land in Changi, the water will then be treated and finally dischar-ged through the deep sea outfalls into the Straits of Singapore.

The Deep Tunnel Sewerage System is a countrywide network of sewerage tunnels that represents Singapore’s long-term solution to the challenge of collecting, treating and disposing used water from the country’s growing population.

Siemens rolled out the Totally Integrated Automation concept for the project, pulling in a wide spectrum of products, including power distribution, actuators and tempe-rature transmitters. We have also delivered the Aeration System, Sludge Conveying System, Chain and Screaper Clarifiers, and Odour Control System for this new under-ground system.

The System brings many benefits to Singapore. Apart from being easier and cheaper to maintain, it will also improve the water quality in the Straits of Johor and Singapore. In addition, it carries a perma-nent blueprint that can be emulated by other Asian countries as they develop into larger economies.

A Deep Tunnel Vision

Powered UpThe Marina Bay Financial Centre is empowered and protected by Siemens solutions

Located along Marina Boulevard at Marina Bay, the Marina Bay Financial Centre is an extension of the existing central business district. It is regarded as the most prestigious commercial, residential and office development in Singapore.

In 2008, Siemens was awarded the contracts to build, install and manage the security systems, fire alarms, and the Sentron Low-voltage Busway system for the project – another showcase of the breadth of our technological expertise.

Kallang Paya Lebar Expressway is fireproofed with the FibroLaser Linear Heat Detection System Smoother and faster traffic flow is the aim of Singapore’s and Southeast Asia’s longest underground Expressway. It stretches12km from the East Coast Parkway Expressway in the South to the Tampines Expressway in the North, with 9km of tunnel underground.

Safety for the thousands of cars using the tunnel everyday is paramount. Siemens provided a sophisticated fire detection system that uses fibre-optic cables to detect any temperature change in the tunnel. A linear heat detector, the FibroLaser II deploys fibre optic cables and lasers to accurately pinpoint the exact location of a fire within the tunnel. And by using no electronics, the cables are immune to electromagnetic disturbances and are designed to last at least 30 years.

The megawatt knob has been turned up as early as 1982 for the 105MW Pasir Panjang Gas Turbine Power

Since decades ago, the island of Singapore has been housing economic activities with high energy needs. Siemens remains a key partner behind the scenes. As the demand for energy continues to grow, Siemens has provided Singapore with better plans and strategies needed to produce power more efficiently and sustainably.

In 2007, Siemens won orders to build power plants for two major utilities. Along with our consortium partner Samsung, we were awarded the contract worth EUR 350 million to provide turnkey enginee-ring, procurement and construction for a 785MW

power plant for the Island Power Company. The energy company also awarded Siemens a service and maintenance contract worth EUR 115 million.

This deal was followed in August 2007 by a contract awarded by PowerSeraya Ltd. Siemens and Samsung will once again cooperate to build an 800MW twin-unit cogeneration power plant for PowerSeraya on Jurong Island. Siemens’ share of the deal amounts to approximately EUR 375 million, and the plant is scheduled to go online in early 2010.

More recently in March 2008, Siemens clinched a Full Scope Maintenance contract for two combined cycle power plant units from PowerSeraya Ltd. The contract, with a term of 12 years, is valued at EUR 125 million.

The Clinical Imaging Research Centre (CIRC)

The Biopolis - Singapore’s newest research hub, is a place where scientists and researchers from both the public and private sectors work non-stop delving into the newest innovations that promise to bring Singapore to the fore-front of the life sciences frontier.

One of the facilities located at this hub is the Clinical Imaging Research Centre (CIRC) – a collaborative effort by Siemens, the Agency of Science, Technology and Research (A*Star) and the National University of Singapore. Together, we will use this world-class R&D imaging facility to promote pioneering biomedical imaging research, as scientists and researchers conduct R&D into the latest, most advanced bio-imaging technologies such as in-vivo imaging for translational and experimental medicine.

As the sole technology partner, Siemens will outfit the centre with our latest molecular and medical imaging technologies, covering the fields of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Positron Emission Tomography (PET) and Computed Tomography (CT), among others.

Commitment to Life!

Faster scanners, speedier images, clearer pictures

While making solutions and services highly flexible and adaptable to individualized specifications, Siemens has helped Singapore’s hospitals gain competencies and credibility in the field. In October 2007, Siemens and the Singapore General Hospital (SGH) signed a landmark agreement to collaborate on clinical and scientific research in the area of Diagnostic Imaging. The two long-term partners would work on joint clinical and scientific projects in key fields such as Magnetic Resonance, Com-puted Tomography, Angiography and Ultra-sound.

On top of this collaboration, Siemens delivered the MAGNETOM Verio to SGH in April 2008, making SGH the first site in Asia Pacific, and the fourth clinical site in the world, to have the world’s first MRI system to combine 3-tesla ultra-high field technology with a patient-friendly 70-cm open bore.

In August 2008, Siemens installed Singapore’s first SOMATOM Definition AS at Tan Tock Seng Hospital. The scanner is the world’s first ad-aptive Computed Tomograph, and is suitable for routine diagnostic work as well as for more complex examinations in oncology, neurology and cardiology.

Healing TouchThe first hearing instrument that fits inside out

For the one who is not afraid to stand out, Siemens has created the VIBE, a hearinginstrument that does not look like a hearing instrument, but more like a Bluetooth, MP3 earpiece or a wireless headset. Worn on the crest of the ear, its unique design includes 19 different clip-on covers, allowing the user to express his individuality, as well as mix and match with what he is wearing.

Aesthetics aside, VIBE is also technically superior. It comes with Siemens’ exclusive SoundSmoothing™ technology, which cuts out intermittent background noises; and FeedbackBlocker™ technology, which redu-ces annoying feedback.

National Day Parade

Art inspires and an inspired nation sets the world ablaze with creativity. Under the banner of Siemens Classics, we work closely with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra to bring music to the people. That, along with our donation of a sculpture ‘Chuan’ by the late Brother Joseph McNally, now located at Empress Place, is our dedication to enhancing lives through the arts.

Since 2003, we have been actively supporting the President’s Challenge by raising money for less known charities that are doing good work in the community. To-date, Siemens is proud to have raised close to $800,000 for the Challenge.

The celebration of a nation is a joyful event of solidarity and commitment. We are proud to have been a major sponsor for the National Day Parade since 1999.
