General News

NO ITEMS WILL BE ALLOWED TO BE DROPPED OFF FOR

YOUR CHILD Our secretaries are inundated with items being dropped off during the school day because a child has left them at home. The School Management Team has decided that due to the high volume and daily occurrence, NO ITEMS will be allowed to be dropped off at reception. This includes lunch, books and other goods. There is also a vast amount of learners using the school phone on a daily basis. Parents must please be strict with their children when it comes to remembering things. We suggest a 'tough love' approach. If they know parents will drop off everything that they left at home, they will not learn to be responsible. This places added stress on you as a parent and develops forgetful children into unreliable adults. Learners must start taking more responsibility and forgetting items should come with consequences. Parents are reminded that our Online Tuck Shop system is working. Any money loaded on the system will be immediately available for the learners to purchase items such as lunch etc. The system will also allow parents to see what their child has spent the money on. We do encourage parents to please pre-order lunch for learners as the daily selection on offer is minimal to avoid wastages, there will always be hotdogs available.

Happy Diwali

We wish all our Hindu families a joyous

Diwali and wish them a prosperous New Year.

Diwali is one of the most significant festivals in Hinduism, often referred to as the “Festival of Lights.” This festival spiritually symbolises the triumph of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, good over evil and hope over despair. While this is a time of rejoicing it is also a time of reflection and spending special time with family and friends, enjoying good food and lots of baked goods.

TEXT BOOKS and READERS

It is unfortunate that many learners do not

return their textbooks and readers at the end

of the year.

In order to encourage our learners to hand in

their text books and readers, a learner will not

be allowed to attend his/her Grade’s end of

the year outing, unless all his/her textbooks

and readers have been handed in.

NOT RETURNING IN 2020 Should your child not be returning to Glenstantia, we require a letter informing the school of the reason, the date of the last day of attendance and the new school’s name. Letters can be sent via email to [email protected] or [email protected] A hand written letter can be handed to the class teacher or Mrs Dore, Office A 16, Admin block.

On Saturday, 12 October our Robotics team participated in the First

Lego League competition at Unisa.

Surviving and Thriving Parenting - 2019

It’s time for a Parenting-Bootcamp that will challenge your child-rearing techniques, and take it to a new level.

Join Rob Parsons and Katharine Hill in a stimulating seminar titled Surviving – and Thriving – Parenting.

They will level the playing field with a fresh approach to communicating with your youngsters that will get

results! Learn how to overcome obstacles and resolve conflict with your children, and join us as we tackle

social media tools and tips on how to manage screen time. It will be an evening of laughter – and some tears too – as we navigate this sometimes misunderstood

journey called Parenthood. There’ll be loads of prizes up for grabs – and exclusive discounts to take advantage of. Don’t miss this opportunity as we embrace parenting – victoriously. Whether your kids

are 6 months or 18 years old, you will benefit from this

seminar.

-----------------------------------------------

Times are tough and we often face daily struggles juggling family, marriage, parenting and work related issues. Stress is one of the great epidemics of our time — if not the greatest! As Christians we are not immune to these challenges. Often, it’s easy to wear a mask to maintain an image with those around us – but behind closed doors the mask falls away and it’s difficult to admit just how hopeless and helpless you feel. Beating Burnout is a seminar that offers hope. It will help you: – Recognise the reality of stress and the damage it causes – Being intentional about reducing stress daily. Take practical steps to handle stress in the family, at work and ministry. Experience Rob & Katharine as they share on managing stress that affects us all!

Parents’ Corner

As we know, South Africa (and the world in general) has been experiencing some serious water shortages lately. To help you stem the tide on free-flowing water in your home, we’re sharing handy tips of saving water around the house. Hygiene:

Turn off the tap while brushing your teeth and save 9 litres Take a 5-minute shower and save up to 100 litres that baths can use Change to a water-efficient showerhead and half your consumption Turn off the water while washing your hair Flush less when you do and put a 2l bottle filled with water in your cistern

Kids: Don’t use water-based toys like water guns, water balloons, etc. If you want to keep your kids cool, use a shallow shell pool If you have a pool, don’t fill it to the top – splashing leads to serious waste Use a pool cover to reduce evaporation

Household: Fix leaky taps – even a slow drip can waste 30 litres a day Only use your dishwasher when its full and stop it before the drying cycle so it can air dry If you fill two sinks; one with soapy water and one with warm water for rinsing, this will use

less water than a dishwasher Wash your clothes in cold water to save water and energy Sweep away leaves and debris rather than using a hose to spray them away Minimise how often you wash your car Put buckets in the shower for runoff water and under drains to catch water during rain for

your garden Plant a water-wise garden with indigenous

drought-resistant plants Water your garden after 6pm Use a watering can to make sure the water

goes where it’s needed
