Empowering women sailors. That iswhat our organization is ultimately about. And after this past weekend I’m moreinspired than ever, not only about this

cause but about our membership’s dedication to thecause. On Saturday, February 4, I attended the SCYAWomen’s Sailing Convention in Newport Beach. Womenfrom 13 states gathered for a full day of learning andcamaraderie. I’m proud to say we had a large group of ourmembers participate in this important annual event, notonly as students but as teachers as well. This included acruise down to Newport by a lively crew on Chekkerrs. The sailing convention offers classes on topics from dieselengine maintenance to safety at sea, with opportunities tolearn both on and off the water. For those of you whohave not attended this convention, I encourage you to putit on your calendar for next year. It was terrific to see somany of our WSA-SMB crew in the crowd.

On January 24, a gathering of the new WSA-SMB boardmembers and chairs was held. We discussed our directionfor this year which included an emphasis not only on ourday sailing and clinics, but also on updated forms ofcommunication for our membership. I’m excited aboutthe ideas posed at this productive meeting and lookforward to the changes we have on the horizon for you.And while we have many ideas on the board, a reminderthat this is YOUR organization. Please do seek out any ofus at our general meetings if you have any questions orideas.

As part of the convention this weekend I had a chanceto speak about our organization and what we have tooffer. I am reminded at every turn what amazingopportunities we are able to provide to put members onthe water and to expose our group to the many topicssurrounding our love of sailing. Take a look at our cruiseschedule and you will see we have events scheduled forEVERY MONTH through October. And that is just theCRUISING!

WSA Racing Reportby WSA Racing Co-Chair Lara Jacques

The Super Bowl Regatta was hosted on January 28, atSanta Monica Windjammers Yacht Club. Boats had to beunder 25 feet long to enter, and skippers ranged in agefrom 7 to 70+! Three race courses were set up by threeRC teams — an outside course for the C15, Laser, RacingOptis and Sport Boat fleets; another in the main channelfor the Lido, CFJ and Snipe fleets; and the Opti Greenfleets in the marina. Volunteers from many clubssupported the race courses.

Working on race committee is a great way to make newsailing connections as well as support the racingcommunity (and people buy you drinks after the race!) Iworked on the mark set boat for the Lido and CFJ courseand had a great time moving marks with the shiftingwind. It was a great day for everyone on the water and fora good cause — the Santa Monica Bay Sailing Foundationwhich provides opportunities and support for juniorsailors throughout the Santa Monica Bay.

The 28th annual Women’s Sailing Convention tookplace February 4, at BCYC in Newport Beach. Many SantaMonica Bay WSA members were spotted participating in,assisting with and leading workshops. Topics ranged fromracing tactics to diesel engine maintenance. There was anintroduction to sailing for the very green, and anafternoon of racing on Holder 20s for those not so greenand interested in the competitive side of our sport.

Our skipper S/C Karyn Jones lead her team to a win inthe mini regatta! Commodore Jana Davis was spottedexperimenting with a voltmeter and stripping wires in theelectric systems workshop. Social Director andMembership Chair Monique Delmar vetted possibleproducts for the infinite maintenance projects on boats.Jr. S/C Melody Kanschat and Jeannea Jordan hosted aWSASMB happy hour on board Chekkerrs before theevening’s dinner and guest speaker. There was somethingfor everyone, and the convention is doing the job ofbringing women sailors together and promoting thesport. Featured speaker Captain Alison Osinski ended hertalk by presenting everyone with a small blue glassmarble, to remind us that we live on a watery paradiseand are among those lucky enough to explore this lovely

blue dot with wind and sails. She also suggested we passalong the glass marble with thanks to a person whohelped us find our way to our first boat and theadventures we have since enjoyed. A very nice sentimentto end a wonderful conference. (Thank you Mom andDad!) (see the full story and photos starting on page 6)

Opening days are being planned, and there are plenty ofraces to get your boats warmed up for the coming season.Midwinters are happening this month - time to remindyour skipper and or crew how much you appreciate them, get those teams together and those boats back in thewater! If you aren’t out racing, volunteer for racecommittee and make those sailing connections! (Only 7more months to get in shape for September’sWOW/WAH…)

Treasurers Reportby Karen Sarpolus

Hello and Happy New Year! I’m happy to be serving asyour treasurer again. The following report is a recap ofour 2016 income and expenses, as well as a review of thestart of 2017.

2016 proved to be our highest membership total todate with 150 members. We also added skippers and boatsto our fleet, increasing the number of sailing opportuni-ties throughout the year. We were able to successfully endthe year’s 2016 budget with a surplus of $1,000.

There were a few changes throughout the year that hadan impact on our finances, but despite the changes wewere able to make adjustments to stay on our targetedbudget. As many of you know, SMWYC made changes totheir policy on serving dinners and room rental fees forour general meetings, which increased the monthly din-ner expenses for the organization. In addition to theSMWYC changes, our storage unit in MdR closed, requir-ing us to find a new storage facility. We elected to houseour items at the SMWYC storage lockers with no in-creased expense for the WSA.

After lengthy discussions at our monthly board meet-ings, instead of increasing the yearly membership dues,we agreed to ask members to help with the added dinnerexpenses in 2017 by paying $5.00 at the monthly meet-ings. This doesn’t completely cover the dinner and roomrental fees, but it will keep the WSA within our budget forthe year. I’m happy to report that our January meetingwas successful with the $5.00 contributions from ourmembers…thank you.

As we look ahead in 2017, I will keep you informed onthe financial well-being of our organization. I look for-ward to meeting many more of you at meetings and onthe water!

Marylyn Hoenemeyer and her husband Tom O’Conormoved to Los Angeles in 1987 and immediately enrolledin a UCLA extension keelboat ocean sailing class, thinkingit would be a great way to meet new people. By this point, they were hooked, andso began their commitment to service in the SouthernCalifornia yachting community.

28th Annual Women’s Sailing Conventionby Jeannea Jordan

I have attended 19 of the 28 Women’s SailingConventions and no one was more excited than I to sailChekkerrs down to Newport Beach for this year’s event. My stalwart crew were, Melody Kanschat, Karen Marie(Sarpolus) and Becky Pratt. I lovingly call them the stormtroopers. It has rained on cruises to the convention in thepast and it rained on us this year as well.

Karen, Becky and I headed out for Shoreline Marina inLong Beach mid-morning Thursday, February 2. Wearrived in the harbor and got the boat slipped atShoreline just minutes before Melody met us at the dock. She’d been busy teaching at Claremont Graduate Schooland since nothing stops Melody, she took the train toLong Beach to catch up with us to sail to the convention. We ate dinner at the Yard House Restaurant in RainbowHarbor and climbed into our warm berths early.

Friday morning it was raining steadily. We delayed ourdeparture as long as possible. Becky served us her family’sChristmas morning breakfast complete with homemadescones and lemon curd, egg casserole with bacon andcheese, and bowls of fresh fruit. Yummm! Then shewhipped us at a game of scrabble. Finally, we could delayno longer and out into the rain we sailed. With lowvisibility, we glided passed what looked like ghost shipsanchored in the harbor.

With the wind and seas on our nose we motor-sailed,tacking back and forth all afternoon. Finally, at 4:00 p.m.we made The Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club in Newportand Capt. Holly Scott waved us in and helped us raft up toanother convention boat at the dock. Kiela Hine-Moriartyand Marsha Vifquain, who had driven to Newport, joinedus on the terrace of BCYC for dinner along with a largegroup of Convention staff and skippers.

Saturday morning my prayers were answered as therain had stopped. After breakfast, I gathered all fivestudents for my anchoring class and headed out of theharbor to explain to these energetic, enthusiastic andbright women sailors, what I know about the intricaciesof staying put on the hook. In the afternoon six sailorwannabee’s joined me on the water for beginners sailing.Every year I marvel at the courageous, fun-loving,spirited women of all ages, who are striving to master thesport of sailing.

Karen enjoyed her classes; Diesels for Dummies andNavigation. When it comes time for Chekkerrs yearlymaintenance I know who to call!

Capt. Alison Olinsky, owner of Mermaid, a BeneteauOceanis 45, gave an interesting, warm and very wellreceived address to the maxed-out room of 220+ womenin attendance. She has taught sailing, navigating andsafety skills on her boat and at the convention for manyyears. Her list of accomplishments and experiences insailing was inspirational to us all.

After the convention, we repaired to the bar and sharedour stories of this amazing day with old friends and new.We were late into our berths and rose Sunday at zero-dark 5:30 a.m. for the 60 mile return slog up the coast toMdR and home for hot showers. I’m already lookingforward to next year!
