Today’s Program… The Auto Future—Fast, Furious, and Uncertain
Dale Leslie introduced today’s speaker, Dr. David E. Cole, founder and Chairman of AutoHarvest. Dr. Cole is a well-known authority on auto industry trends. He is the Chairman Emeritus of the Center for Automotive Research, and formerly the founder and head of the Office for the Study of Automotive Transportation at the UM Transportation Research Institute. Dr. Cole provided an overview of current auto industry challenges and the important role the AutoHarvest organization is playing in that environment.
We are in a period of dramatic uncertainty for the automo-tive industry. The old business model typified by “king lead-ers” is broken. The new business model emphasizing “coach leaders” and collaboration is still taking form. The industry is facing mega-issues in terms of technology, people/politics, mobility, international events, natural events, and autonomous vehicles.
Talent has become a major manufacturing choke point. The baby-boomers are retiring, all jobs require special skills, and the K-12 pipeline is not adequate for the industry’s needs. This high-tech environment needs millions of capable peo-ple to develop and manufacture the materials, power plants, and systems required for future success. Autono-mous vehicles, for example, offer huge potential, but… there are major obstacles to overcome in terms of human behavior, technology, cost, and liability issues.

Guests at Our Club… Dan Burroughs introduced today’s guests, many of whom were participants in today’s super-interclub. Hospitality… Lynne Lande and Cliff Sheldon reported that our club was well represented at the funeral for member Dave Fox that occurred earlier in the day at Zion Lutheran Church. Dave passed away on November 30. Obituary here.
Lynne also reported the passing on November 27 of member Todd Jones who has been in-active in club activities for some time due to health issues. A small memorial service for Todd will be held at Glacier Hills on December 9 at 1:00pm. Obituary here. Both Dave and Todd will be greatly missed.
The club will be sending Christmas cards to members unable to attend meetings, and the widows/families of deceased members. Lynne has placed the cards in the meeting room. They will be there for member signing for the next two meetings.
Scott Virgo from the Ypsilanti club informed us there will be a memorial gathering for friends of Bill Fennel this Friday from 2-6pm at the Corner Brewery, 720 Norris Street, Ypsilanti (now changing its name to Arbor Brewing Company Microbrewery).
Max Ziegler advised the members of a Michigan teen battling cancer who is asking for cards from strangers to brighten her Christmas. Destiny Coselman (19) has stage IV Glioblastoma and doctors estimate has less than two years to live. Cards can be sent to Destiny at 10341 Alan’s Drive, Fowlerville, MI 48836. Read the article here.

Fines… The Dever clan made sure no one escaped with an extra quarter in their pocket. First, Nick proposed fining anyone who hadn’t noticed the American flag was hanging the wrong way. This passed—wonder if it will be re-hung by next week? Next, Dan proposed fining anyone not outfitted in a blue jacket, blue shirt, red tie, and cheesy moustache. Oddly, only Dan and Peter Schork met the requirement. Fine passed.
Happy Dollars… Max Ziegler had happy dollars in memory of Dave Fox and Todd Jones, and for all of
the great volunteers at the downtown Christmas Sale.
Bob Gray was happy for the 30 or so families from the T. Wall Foundation for special needs students who came to the sale at KCW purchasing $1,972 in merchandise.
Jane Talcott was happy for Bill Fennel’s life, and seemed to have an uncanny level of knowledge regarding the location of the Corner Brewery where a memorial is being held for Bill this Friday from 2-6pm. She is also happily working through the challenges of organizing our volunteer recognition day on December 18.
Jerry Brown was happy to have wife Lyn present as a guest today, and was happy for grandson Marcus’s hockey tourney success.
Dave Bell had a happy dollar for his grandson who has committed to play soccer at UM.
Ken Hillenburg was happy to return from a very enjoyable three-week trip through the southeast U.S.
Bob Snider and Luz were very happy for the excellent progress of a granddaughter who has overcome serious medical issues—she was the life of the party at Thanksgiv-ing!
Fred Sanchez was happy that UM is going to the Outback Bowl and that MSU is going to the Holiday Bowl.
Meeting Administration... President-Elect William V. Hampton led our meeting on Monday. His first order of business was recognizing December member birthdays for Page Caufield, Steve Hiller, Bob Johnson, Sharon Keyes, Dick Benedek, Garry Donner, Marianne D’Angelo, and Jim Meretta. The song was sung and the rest of us felt a bit younger.
President-Elect Hampton also shared a bit of history… he and former member Fulton Eaglin were fraternity brothers in Alpha Phi Alpha, the first inter-collegiate Greek-letter fraternity estab-lished for African American Men.

Sale and Transition to KCW Weekly News/Updates... Cashiers, Sales, Greeters, Wrappers, and Dock Personnel: We have succeeded in getting through what likely will have been the busiest weekend of the calendar year at KCD and KCW. KCW sales were over $13,000 and KCD over $8,000. At both locations we recorded over 1,000 cash and credit card transactions. Sales of Holiday items recorded on the iPad Square Point of Service devices were $5,700 plus cash sales at KCD. In addition, furniture sales were $2,800, housewares ~$1,500, jewelry ~$1,200, toys $1,100, and book and records ~$1,100. The Holiday Sale will continue at KCD next Saturday and at KCW through the end of the month and possibly to early January. SMOC will meet next week and make a final determination about KCW being open on Saturday, December 23. The decision will be based on available staffing for that day. Please check the schedule and let me know of any conflicts or changes. We were short-handed at the cash registers and dock help over the past weekend as the activity in the store was far above the average compared to previous weeks. We hope to avoid these shortages in the future. I will be contacting you for your schedule for the first quarter of 2018 within the next week. ~Bob Gray
KCD Christmas Sale KCD Holiday Sale Leader-in-Chief Peter Schork reported there were 118 people in line when the sale opened on Friday. It was a very busy day until the last hour when volunteers were able to take a bit of a breather. On Saturday the line was only five people, but traffic was steady and we had another good day. Forty kids from Aktion Club shopped the downtown sale thanks to the organizing efforts of Bill Hallock and Don Kossick—a great event for all involved. Thanks to all our volun-teers. See you this Saturday for the last hurrah!
Assignments for KCD Christmas Sale The following members are signed up to work the last KCD Christmas Sale from 8:45am to Noon this Saturday, December 9: Gordon Beeman, Kathie Wilder, Gretchen Preston, Rose Marie Barhydt, Dan Burroughs, Clar Dukes, and Jane Talcott.
Chester Greenwood Day Jim Wolfington filled us in on this momentous event while mentioning our excellent sale numbers in passing. It seems Maine’s 41st Chester Greenwood Day was competition (though not much) for our sale last Saturday. Mr. Greenwood (1858-1937) invented the first spring-loaded ear muffs in 1877 and was thus honored by Maine with his namesake day—much as would have happened in Michigan had he settled here. No word on whether Mr. Greenwood was a Kiwanian, but proba-bly.

CENTENNIAL MEMORY GEM 1971 President Lyle Paige shows his enthusiastic two-fisted style of Salvation Ar-my Bell Ringing. The scene is the newly inaugurated Arborland Shopping Center with its unique Christmas candelabra draped in the parking lot.
Each year we would com-pete with the Ann Arbor Police Department in gener-ating the most successful fund-raising day of bell ring-ing. When they won, we attributed it to their gun belts! Meanwhile, we always sported smiles and said "thank you" as depicted by President Paige.
In 2017, December 23rd is our club's day to shine in ringing in this great tradi-
