Today’s Program… Summer Reading

Dexter Public Schools, creative principal and educa-tor, Craig McCalla and Ryan Bruder, respectively. The sobering facts: Michigan ranks 41st in the nation in fourth-grade reading achievement; we're 49th in African American students. McCalla and Bruder are dedicated to preventing the Summer Slide where students spend less than 10 minutes a day in read-ing. "The key is having family members sitting down with them to read: parents, grandparents, brothers and sisters."

Dexter offers a number of summer literacy-reading workshops. But they hope to establish a mobile Bookmobile that would service the community similar to programs in Saline and Chelsea. And, they are looking to Kiwanis to supply books "to get them to the stu-dents." Their proposed Bookmobile program:

1. Visit four high density neighborhoods and downtown;

2. Set dates so that families are aware of their visits and the loca-tion downtown;

3. Share with other communities; and

4. Foster love of books.

"We want to spread this program and share with our neighbors in Washtenaw County," McCalla and Bruder said in summary. The Q and A session that followed their remarks showed a strong interest in their program from club members.

Next Week’s Program... November 27—Hall of Honor Installations. Host: Harry Cross.

Upcoming Programs… December 4—Auto Harvest. Speak-

er: David Cole. Introduction by: Dale Leslie.

December 11—Travel for Seniors. Speaker: Virginia Davis. Introduc-tion by: Deb Jones.

Meetings... Kiwanis Cross Foundation and Mem-ber Recognition on November 27th. Check with chair people (in the di-gest) for the time.

Guests at Our Club… Emily Allshouse announced: Esther Hampton, wife of our president elect; Mark Lavin, spouse of Eloise (good to see you up and around, Mark); Mary Evans, wife of Garry; and Past Lt. Gov-ernor, Charlie Phibbs. Also—the Longest Drive to Get Here Award goes to the family of Emeritus member, Tom Fegan, who traveled from Colorado and accompanied the former Washtenaw County Planning Director. Tom served the County for nearly 40 years and literally stands out in a crowd. As a member of the U-M basketball team, Tom would scrimmage against teammate Ron Kremer—a fierce competitor in any circumstance—and he felt many jabs of the latter's elbows! Tom lives in University Living and a card or note would be appreci-ated. (See roster for address)

Hospitality… Claire Dahl mentioned the passing of member Ann Frey. A standing moment of silence was observed. Ann always had a lot of enthusiasm about the work of our club. When her car keys were retired, she made a point to attend our weekly meetings. Her Happy Dollar was tradi-tionally a run-down of the activities of her wonderful family—an accomplished group.

Claire said she is mailing Thanksgiving Day cards to: Bob Barden, Sr.; Letitia Byrd and Va-lerie Eaglin.

Oh, greetings from Paris from Sue Daily! John Dahl remains the contact for hospitality items: 734.395.3840.

Announcements… Membership Digests Are Here: A tip of the bonnet to Digest Editor Chris Winkler and his

committee for another outstanding publication. So complete; so many details; and a wonderful photo of our scholarship recipients on the cover. In short, "It's great!"

Holidays in General Business: Jim Carey will be organizing a trip to Mott Children's Hospital to help bring patients to a Holiday program featuring complimentary gifts. A joyous time for all. Through the generosity of contributors (including our club) each patient receives three gifts. Details forth coming.

Peter Schork is looking for Ho-Ho-Hoers to work at our Christmas Sale. The real last hurrah of the Kiwanis Activities Center (1966-2017) and how appropriate—providing toys and games and seasonal items at our everyday low prices. Note: Before our No-vember 27th meeting, there will be sale preparation DOWNTOWN, beginning at 9 a.m. And the big event, the following day: assembling Christmas trees. It really gets you in the Holiday Spirit!
