An extensive A u t o m o t i v e F i n i s h i n g M a r k e t R e p o r t (SFMRB Report No. 7) on the automotive finishing industry has recently been completed by the S u r f a c e F i n i s h i n g I n d u s t r i a l Counc i l (SFIC). The report pro- vides detailed marke t informa- tion on the U.S. metal finishers who serve the automotive indus- try. Facility locations, past busi- ness trends, business outlook, current sales levels, substrates,

processes and equipment used, elimination and substitutions for hazardous processes, quality con- trol, and process technology usage trends are all included. The auto- motive industry is the largest industrial market served by the U.S. metal-finishing industry, with nearly 50% of finishers involved. These finishers are devoted to both the OEM and af termarket automotive parts including fasteners, bumpers, wheels, under-the-hood parts, plastic parts for interior and exte- rior applications, and more. The S u r f a c e F i n i s h i n g M a r k e t R e s e a r c h B o a r d (SFMRB), coor- dinated by SFIC, is made up of members of the A m e r i c a n E l e c t r o p l a t e r s a n d S u r f a c e F i n i s h e r s Soc i e ty (AESF), the Me ta l F i n i s h i n g S u p p l i e r s

A s s o c i a t i o n (MFSA), and the Nat iona l Assoc ia t ion of Metal F i n i s h e r s (NAMF).

The 48-page report contains fin- isher and supplier information on their: (1) capabilities and certifi- cations; (2) major future chal- lenges; (3) geographic concentra- tions; (4) most popular processes; (5) most common new processes; (6) hazardous processes being eliminated; and (7) most common substrates used. Customized reports using these data can be produced to fit your specific area of interest . The price of Report No. 7 is $95 for members and $190 for nonmembers. words representing the new iden- tification mark for electrocoated products. The mark was created in response to membership sur- veys indicating the need for increased consumer awareness about the reasons many products, such as cars, last longer than ever before This program is designed to aid industry communication, edu- cate people in manufacturing oper- ations, create brand awareness, to clearly identify products protected by an electrocoat finish, to educate consumers, and to help manufac- turers sell more products. The goal is that educated consumers will choose E-coated products. There is no cost for companies to participate in the mark program. For more information, or to request an E- coat mark kit, please contact The Electrocoat Association (www.elec- trocoat.org).
