Chapter 1: Introduction

This document describes the new and changed features in EuControl Software version 19.5 for Pro Tools | Control, S3, Dock, and Artist Series media controllers for Avid Pro Tools® and other EUCON™-aware applications.

• For complete descriptions of features, see New and Changed Features in EuControl v19.5. • For additional information about fixed and known issues, see EuControl v19.5 Release Notes.

System Requirements and CompatibilityAvid can only assure compatibility and provide support for hardware and software it has tested and approved. For the latest infor-mation about operating system requirements, compatible DAWs and other applications, and links to additional resources, visit EuControl Compatibility.

DAW Compatibility At the time of this writing, EuControl Software v19.5 is compatible with the following (or later versions): • Avid Pro Tools and Pro Tools | Ultimate 2019.5 or later is required

• Steinberg Nuendo 7 and Cubase 8 • Apple Logic 10 • Magix Sequoia 14• Merging Pyramix 8.x Native only, and Pyramix 9.x• Avid XMON S6• Pro Tools | MTRX, and ProMon (DADman) for Pro Tools | MTRX and NTP Technology AX32

For setup and configuration instructions for several applications from EUCON Development Partners, see the EUCON Application Setup Guide.pdf, available for download from your Avid account. Please note that while these applications are EUCON-enabled, the extent of integration with Avid control surfaces and supported software versions are at the sole direction of the respective manufacturer. For details, please contact the manufacturer.

On macOS 10.14/”Mojave” (only) you will be prompted to add applications such as EuControl and Pro Tools to the Privacy list in System Preferences. If so, follow the on-screen instructions.

Important!

The EUCON performance improvements introduced in v3.5 make it and all later versions (including v19.5) incompatible with v3.4.x and previous versions of EUCON and EuControl. As a result, the current and future versions must not be run on the same network (subnet) as any 3.4.x or previous EUCON Surface software.

• To get the latest version of EuControl software for S3 Dock, and Artist Series, download it from your Avid Account. If you are registering an Artist Series unit and have its serial number, you can also visit:

http://www.avid.com/en/products/artist-control/learn-and-support• For System 5-MC and MCPro, visit:

System 5-MC and MC Pro Documentation and Software

• For System 5, use version 6.1 or later. For more information, visit: http://avid.force.com/pkb/articles/user_guide/System-5-and-S5-Fusion

For System 5 software downloads, log in to your Avid Account or contact Avid support for details.

Because of the major changes in EuControl 19.5 for attention and plug-in window workflows, there may be undesirable behavior with earlier versions of Pro Tools. If using Pro Tools 2018.12 or earlier, consider disabling the new attention and plug-in window settings described later in this guide.

Surface Attention Follows DAW (Attention Most Recently Clicked DAW Area)(Requires Pro Tools 2019.5 or later)

You can optimize how EUCON surfaces react to actions on-screen in your DAW using the Attention Most Recently Clicked DAW Area options in the General tab of EuControl Settings.

Attention Most Recently Clicked DAW Area

Enable any available setting to control when a mouse click tells the surface to attention a track. For example, if Edit Window is en-abled and you click in the time line or click/select a clip in your DAW, that track is automatically attentioned on your controller. If Edit Window is not enabled, clicking in the time line or clicking/selecting a clip will not attention that track.

Additional Information for Attention Triggers

Attention Most Recently Clicked DAW Area settings in EuControl Settings > General

Definitions for Attention Most Recently Clicked DAW Area Settings

Attention Setting Trigger Additional Information

Track Name Clicking a track name in Mix or Edit window

Fader Clicking a track volume fader in Mix window

Edit Window

• Clicking in a track/playlist lane in the timeline • Keyboard shortcuts that move the insertion or section

between tracks (such as Command Focus “p” and “;”). See “Edit Selection Move Up / Down” below.

• When clicking, the attention trigger is only based on the initial mouse click location. If you define a selection spanning multiple tracks, or bound an edit group, the attentioned track is based on the first point of contact on the edit timeline.

Plug-Ins • Clicking to open a plug-in window • Clicking anywhere in the plug-in window (including the

header with automation, Librarian and the Target icon)

Pan Controls • Clicking a pan knob or puck in the Mix window• Clicking anywhere within a floating Pan window• Clicking on a pan puck in the I/O view of the Edit window

Note that clicking on a pan control n the I/O view of the Edit window will not trigger attention.

Send Controls • Clicking to open a send window• Clicking anywhere within an open send window (including

the window Target)

Note that clicking a send control in any Expanded Sends view will not trigger attention.

Edit Selection Move Up / Down

Using the computer keyboard or EUCON key commands to move the edit cursor or a selection up or down. For example, pressing “p” to move up or “;” to move down will attention the last track in which the cursor lands.

In Pro Tools make sure to enable Link Track and Edit Selection

Attention on Select Button Press, and Auto-Bank to Clicked TrackThese settings let you further optimize workstation and controller interaction.

• Enable Attention on Select Button Press to have track Attention follow strip Sel (Select) and/or tapping to select a track in Tracks view in the Control app.

• Enable the Auto-Bank to Clicked Track setting to have controller banking follow Attention Most Recently Clicked DAW Area settings. For example, when Auto-Bank to Clicked Track and Track Name are enabled, clicking a track Name banks that track onto the surface and attentions it. If Track Name is not enabled, clicking a track name will not bank or attention that track. Banking will only occur if the selected track is not already banked to a strip. In addition, Auto-Bank to Clicked Track and Auto-Bank to Selected Track are mutually exclusive (enabling either disables the other) to best support applications which may or may not support the Attention Most Recently Clicked DAW Area settings.

Open/Close Window on Workstation When EditingIn previous versions of EuControl, the Open Plug-ins On Workstation When Editing setting let supported workstations open plug-in windows on-screen when a plug-in was selected for editing on S3 and similar Artist Series media controllers (all except Pro Tools | Control). Similarly, the Close Plug-ins On Workstation When Exiting setting would, when enabled, close the plug-in window when the controller was focused on a different element.

Beginning in EuControl 19.5 these settings have been expanded and renamed. These new settings also apply to Pro Tools | Control.

Open Windows on Workstation When Editing Located in the General tab of EuControl Settings, this selector provides a drop-down menu with the following choices:

• Open Plug-Ins Only• Open Plug-Ins and Pan• Open Plug-Ins and Sends• Open Plug-Ins, Pan, and Sends

When Open Windows on Workstation When Editing is enabled for plug-ins, pan and/or sends:

Plug-Ins Pressing a knob to access a function (such as Inserts > EQ3, or EQ if that type of insert exists on the currently selected track) opens the corresponding window on-screen and closes any previously opened window of the same types.

To open a plug-in window from the top-level function view, press the Sel switch directly below the displayed plug-in name.

Pan and Sends Touch a knob assigned to Pan or Sends.

In the Control app, touching the Pan, EQ, or Dyn block in the function scroller opens the corresponding window on-screen. For sends, touch a Send level slider (or associated knob on the Dock, S3, or other hardware controller, if any).

Close Windows on Workstation When Exiting When this setting is enabled, attentioning any other track “exits” the current function and closes the corresponding window type(s) selected in Open Windows on Workstation When Editing (unless the same function exists on the newly attentioned track, in which case the window remains open but is focused on the newly attentioned track).

When using a DAW that does not directly support these new features, the previously available “Attention most recently selected track” setting remains available. When using a DAW that does directly support these new features, “Attention most recently se-lected track” is not available.

Additional Information for Open/Close Windows Settings

Tip for Managing Pro Tools WindowsIf you want certain plug-in, output/pan, or sends windows to remain visible at all times, use the Target feature in Pro Tools.

For windows such as essential metering plug-ins, turn the Target off to ensure it remains visible. Click on the Target to toggle it on/off, or hold Shift on the computer keyboard while clicking to open a plug-in window to open it with the Target off. For example, using the Control app hold down Shift on the computer keyboard (or the Soft Key for computer Shift) while tapping an Insert. On S3, hold down Multi-Select/Shift (or Shift on the computer keyboard. The window opens with the Target off.

When the Target icon is unlit (grey), that window remains on-screen until you explicitly close that window.

When the Target icon is lit red in a plug-in, output/pan or send window, that window is replaced when another similar element is attentioned (such as a plug-in on a different track). By default, windows open with the Target on.

Monitoring View in Pro Tools | ControlThe Monitoring view let you assign and manage monitor controls. The Monitoring view supports any hardware or software appli-cation with a EUCON Monitor, such as Pro Tools | MTRX, Avid XMON, Studio Monitor Pro 2, as well as Nuendo, Cubase, and Pyramix. Main (level), and Cut (mute) are also supported in Pro Tools without MTRX or XMON when you Enable EUCON Mon-itor (requires Pro Tools 2018.7 or higher).

You can lock the Monitoring view controls to DADman, XMON or other from the Assign tab in EuControl Settings. When a mon-itoring solution is focused in the Monitoring view:

• To configure a source, double-tap (or tap and hold) on a Source block then choose the desired source from the pop-up selector. • For Output formats greater than 8 channels, scroll the Speaker Selects from right to left. • To mute or unmute Monitor A, B, C, or D, tap their block along the lower left side. When muted, the block is red. • To cut (or engage) Talkback, Dim, Main, or other, tap their block.

See these articles to learn more about how to configure DADman for Pro Tools | MTRX: • Creating a New Profile for Pro Tools | MTRX• Creating Sources for Pro Tools | MTRX with S6• Pro Tools | Dock Monitoring with Pro Tools | MTRX

For XMON, download the XMON EUCON Guide.pdf from your Avid account or from Avid S6 Support on our Knowledge Base.

Talkback via FootswitchOn supported controllers, you can designate a footswitch to control Talkback in the Preferences tab of EuControl Settings.

A normally Open, momentary Footswitch should be used for Talkback. (Latching footswitches do not support momentary actions.) For latching behavior, tap the footswitch quickly.

Suspend All FadersIn EuControl Settings > General the new Suspend All Faders setting lets you disengage faders from following Pro Tools automa-tion. Faders still control on-screen levels, but will not move in response to automation or on-screen adjustment of their current pa-rameter. Unlike the Faders Off Soft Key (EUCON > Global > Faders Off) faders stay at their current position when suspended.

Suspend All Faders is available as a Soft Key. In the Soft Key Editor, add a new Surface command, then choose Options > General > Suspend All Faders.

Momentary Fader Value DisplayYou can optimize fader display of track name and values by configuring the Show Timed Fader Values and Fader Value Timeout settings in the Preferences tab of EuControl Settings.

Show Timed Fader Values

When enabled, values temporarily replace track name on fader displays when the fader is touched or adjusted. The length of time values are displayed is determined by the Fader Value Timeout setting.

Fader Value Timeout

The Fader Value Timeout setting lets you customize the length of time values are displayed (between 0 and 5 seconds).

Scroll to Track and Scroll Into ViewEUCON surfaces fully support ICON-style Scroll to Track and Scroll into View to scroll Pro Tools windows so that the selected track is at the far left in the Mix window and at the top of the Edit window.

• Scroll to Track lets you search for and scroll/bank to tracks by name. The searched track is selected. • Scroll into View lets you scroll and bank without selecting by clicking on their on-screen name, or using their strip Sel switch.

Scroll to Track

To enable Scroll to Track:

In Pro Tools, go to Preferences > Mixing and enable “Scroll to Track” Banks Controllers.

To utilize Scroll to Track:

1 Choose Track > Scroll to Track (or press Command-Option-F (Mac) or Control-Alt-F (Windows).

Enable EUCON Monitor(Pro Tools Only)

Pro Tools lets you designate a Master Fader to act as a Monitor Path that can be controlled from EUCON control surfaces. Desig-nation of a Master Fader as a EUCON Monitor path is stored in the Pro Tools session, letting it persist when a session is moved from a system with an S6 to one with a Dock, or similar.

To enable a Master Fader for EUCON Monitoring:

1 Ensure that Enable EUCON is selected in Setup > Peripherals > Ethernet Controllers.

2 Create a Master Fader track and assign it to any path being used for monitoring (this can be your main Monitor Path, or other).

3 Right-click the name of the Master Fader and select EUCON Monitor.

The Control Room/Monitor knob on your EUCON control surface controls that Master Fader track for monitoring.

For example, on the Dock with a Master Fader assigned to EUCON Monitor:

• Rotating the Monitor/Control Room knob raises and lowers the Master Fader level.

• Pressing the knob sets Master Fader level to –INF (effectively Muting or “cutting” the monitor level). Press again to return to the previous level.

This feature was previously available in Pro Tools 2018.7.

What’s Fixed in EuControl 19.5All EuControl Devices / EuControl Software• EuControl: After assigning an Attention/Selected Track in a Layout it was possible for that track to not appear when recalling

the Layout until viewing, leaving, and then returning to the Assign tab (GWSW-11591)

Pro Tools | Control, S3, Dock, Artist Series• Spilling a VCA over a currently spilled VCA could clear track assignments (GWSW-11562)

• It was possible for the Control app Main Counter to not display properly when connected to Digital Performer (GWSW-11228)

• In the Control app, meter peaks could fail to clear when Peak Hold is set to “3 seconds” (GWSW-11284)

• Meters in the Control app could become intermittent (GWSW-11910)

• It was possible for send values displayed in the Control app to not match S3 or other surfaces (GWSW-11587)

• S3 with Dock: The Pro Tools Mix or Edit windows could auto-scroll after selecting an off-bank track (GWSW-11618)

• Spilling a VCA or using Bank to Selected Track could move tracks to the left by one strip (GWSW-11534)

• When assigned to a EUCON Master in Pro Tools, pressing the Dock Monitor knob with Option key could incorrectly light the Cut LED (GWSW-11702)

• It was possible for knob displays to be blank after auto-inserting a default EQ or Dyn plug-in (GWSW-11539)

• An erroneous “Versions are incompatible” message could appear when adding the Control app to My Surfaces (GWSW-12086)

• It was possible for MackieControl to not function correctly with newly installed versions of EuControl (GWSW-12213)

• When using the Dock with Apple’s Logic Pro X it was possible for the Jog and Shuttle switch LEDs to incorrectly indicate status (GWSW-12303)

What Was Fixed in EuControl 18.3.0

All EuControl Devices / EuControl Software• At times, the Rec switch automation LED would insist on illuminating while in Read+Trim mode (GWSW-11029)

• The Record Ready LED could remain off while recording in Pro Tools if the Preference Rec/Auto switch press changes au-tomation modes was not enabled (GWSW-11045)

• The Rec switch automation LEDs could flicker when writing automation if the Preference Rec/Auto switch press changes au-tomation modes was enabled (GWSW-11224)

• S3 or Artist Mix: Pressing a knob while Flip mode was active would reset the fader instead of the control assigned to the knob (GWSW-11257)

• When in Flip mode while the EuControl Preference setting SHIFT + fader sets level to 0db enabled, resetting the fader value by holding SHIFT and touching the fader would not set it to the correct default and adjust pan (GWSW-10835)

• Network settings in EuControl Preferences and WSControl could end up out of sync after a clean install (GWSW-11526)

• The External Workstation setting in EUCON Preference could become unavailable (GWSW-11242)

Pro Tools | Control• It was possible for the Track name displayed in the lower left corner of the Control app to not update correctly after spilling a

VCA (GWSW-11028)

• It was possible for the Auto Spill VCA from Control App Attention setting to require toggling before it worked (GWSW-11286)

• The Main Counter would not always update when switching between applications (GWSW-11229)

• Pro Tools | Dock

• The Rec/A switch LED now correctly flashes to indicate when you are writing automation (GWSW-11025)

• Knobs on the Dock needed an acceleration curve for better control of parameters (GWS-11314)

Pro Tools | S3• When recalling Layouts from Layout switches A–E, switch LEDs would not always light when active/selected (GWSW-11033)

• When in Flip mode with Pan assigned to a fader, Opt/Alt+touching the fader would set Pan value to 0, as expected, but the fader would not move to the correct position (PT-238654)

• When viewing Pan in Channel Control, switch assignments could be incorrectly mapped (GWSW-11313)

Artist Series• When spilling a VCA from the Control app, the VCA Master would sometimes appear on Artist Mix regardless of the S3/Dock

VCA Master setting (GWSW-11027)

• Artist Transport: It was possible for Shuttle to not work with the Shuttle ring (GWSW-11327)

Known IssuesThe following issues are not addressed in EuControl 19.5. Where applicable, a workaround is provided.

General Issues• Microsoft Windows 10 Creators Update

If your system is running Microsoft Windows 10 Creators Update do not enable the Enable External Workstations in EuControl to avoid problems with mouse clicks.

• Wi-Fi crashes EuControl when trying to play back a Pro Tools session from a second workstation (EUCON-3945)

If you have chosen Wi-Fi in EUCON Preferences, you may experience this issue as using Wi-Fi to connect two Workstations is not supported. Instead, make sure you connect Workstations via Ethernet cables and choose the corresponding Network Inter-face in EUCON Preferences on both Workstations.

• EuControl will crash after switching Wi-Fi on workstation and iPad from one network to another (EUCON-4015)

• On-screen (DAW) indication of focused tracks gets out of sync when adding or removing surfaces or the app (EUCON-4021)

Pro Tools | Dock• Dock knobs other than Pan sometimes reset pan (EUCON-4652)

When the Control app is in Channel View > Pan function for a stereo track, pressing the Dock Soft Knob for Inv (Inverse) Pan or for Link resets Left channel pan to center.

• Preference for Dock Automation Buttons Follow Attentioned Channel is only supported in Pro Tools (EUCON-4706)

EuControl 3.4.1 added the preference setting in the General tab of EuControl Settings Dock automation buttons follow atten-tioned channel. At the time of this writing, this setting is fully supported only with Pro Tools. In addition, with Logic Pro, Dock Automation LEDs only light when this setting is enabled. If it is not enabled, no Automation switch LEDs light. Also Logic Pro does not yet display the correct Automation LED for Touch and Touch/Latch. With Nuendo, Dock Automation LEDs only light up when this setting is enabled. If it is not enabled, no Automation switch LEDs light. Also Nuendo will only indicate Read and Off modes, but not Write.

Pro Tools | Control• Loss of Wi-Fi connection not always indicated in Pro Tools | Control (EUCON-4736)

If Wi-Fi connection is lost temporarily, it is possible for the Control app to appear as if it is still connected and still appear in My Surfaces.

Workaround: Restart EUCON Applications after Wi-Fi is re-established. Or, enable the “Forget Network” setting on your iPad.

• Pro Tools | Control App: Visual artifacts after entering non-English text into text field and hiding the keyboard (EUCON-4058)Workaround: Quit the app, switch keyboard to US English, then relaunch the app.

Pro Tools | S3• Connecting an S3 Network port to a network switch with BPDU (Bridge Protocol Data Unit) guard enabled can disable the port

on the switch the S3 is connected to (VSW-10570)

Do not connect S3 to any network switches that have BPDU guard enabled. If an S3 is to be connected to a network such as a corporate network, make sure BPDU is disabled on all switches present in the network.

• (S3 Only) When using Logic, channel strip meters may flicker and disappear if the signal on the corresponding track is clipping (EUCON-3285)

Workaround: Attenuate faders until meter LEDs reappear.

• (S3 Only) When an S3 is in Config mode (CFG), after removing or adding a track to the current session Config mode actions do not work (EUCON-3124)

Workaround: To restore Config Mode operation, press the Config (CFG) switch again.

• (S3 Only) After deleting a strip from a custom Layout, the deleted strip remains on the surface (EUCON-3159)

Workaround: Recall a different Layout, then recall the original layout to show the proper channel strips.

• (S3 Only) After assigning or re-assigning a VCA to a Group, the corresponding display does not show updated group assign-ments (EUCON-3037)

Workaround: To show the updated group assignment, select a different track, then re-select the VCA. The display should now show the correct group assignment.

• (S3 Only) With the Inserts spilled to Channel Control or the Channel Encoders, surface displays do not update after removing or deactivating the targeted plug-in (EUCON-3070)

• Workaround: Select a different track, then select the original track to refresh the displays.

• (S3 on Windows Only) Using Application/Workstation + < Bank to cycle through open applications does not work (EUCON-3105)

Workaround: Only cycle through applications to the right using Application/Workstation + Bank >.• (S3 Only) When using S3 with Nuendo 6, the Channel Control Navigation In switch does not toggle EQ parameters on/off

(EUCON-2847)

Workaround: Toggle the EQ on/off on-screen.

• Disconnecting the Ethernet cable from the Dock or an Artist Series device can cause the device to freeze (EUCON-2844)

To reestablish communication:

1 Disconnect the power cable to the surface to power it down.

2 Power down your workstation computer.

3 Reconnect power to the surface and then power the surface back on.

4 Power the workstation computer back on.

• If a custom appset was created using Pro Tools 11.3 or lower, labels for S3 soft keys in the EuControl Settings > Soft Key tab may be incorrect (EUCON-3574)

Workaround: In the EuControl Settings > Soft Key tab, click the Restore button to load the factory default Soft Key appset for the current version of Pro Tools.

• (Pro Tools 12 and higher only) If an Artist Mix and an Artist Control are connected to Pro Tools, when the Mix and/or Edit Win-dow Follows Surface Bank preference is enabled, only banking on Artist Mix is followed in Pro Tools (EUCON-3599)
