What’s New!Trident Technical College is pleased to host our annual Kids’ College and Teen University summer

camps. Camps are offered weekly from June 11-Aug. 3, 2018 for youth ages 7-17. Each year, we diversify our offerings and present innovative, exciting camps that stimulate your child’s imagination and inspire him or her to try new experiences. Check out some of our new initiatives this year!

Teen University Filmmaking Academy Join us for the inaugural year of Tech Flix Bootcamp to explore the creative side of the film

industry. Work alongside Trident Tech’s real-life media team in our professional, state-of-the art labs and facilities.

Take individual camps to learn skills that help you in your own projects. Take all six camps to experience the entire filmmaking process from start to finish. Plus, if you sign up for five camps, you can take the sixth camp at 50 percent off.

Each camp contributes to a short film product completed at the end of June. Filmmaking Academy camps are fast-paced and fun! No previous experience needed; our skilled teaching staff guides students of all ability levels.

Camp offerings include: Movie Masks and Makeup; Set Design; Acting for Film; Sound for Film; Film Editing; and Film Production. For more information, see pg. 31.

Teen University Music Academy WeekThis one-week summer music experience (June 11-15, daily from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.) at

TTC’s Palmer Campus in downtown Charleston explores the intricacies of playing in small music ensembles. It is designed for music students (ages 12-17) studying woodwinds, brass and percussion instruments. To gain the most from the Music Academy Week experience, campers must have completed at least one year of formal music education as part of a traditional band program and/or through private lessons.

Music Academy Week engages, educates and inspires young musicians through the power of music and music making. Campers engage in the shared experience of playing chamber music through a week of individual and small group coaching, masterclasses and workshops, and performances.

Enroll for Music Academy Week online at www.tridenttech.edu/ce. Then email a video introduction with your registration to [email protected]. Your video should include: your name and age; number of years of music experience you have and how long you have been playing an instrument; why you would like to participate in Music Academy Week; and a one or two minute playing sample of your choice. For more information, see pg. 26.

New this year, we are offering camps for adults. Drop off your students at their camps and then spend a carefree morning or afternoon creating and exploring. (See pg. 38)

Summer Camps Scholarship FundDid you know that each year, Trident Technical College is able to provide a limited number of scholarships to deserving youth so they can experience Kids’ College and Teen University summer camps? These students may come from a household that has a very low fixed-income, their parent(s) or legal guardian may be struggling to make ends meet or they may be in a foster care situation.

There are a variety of reasons why some youth need assistance through this important program. But it is only made possible through support from generous donors such as you. Any size donation can help.

Please send your tax-deductible donation to:

Future TTC Students

A machine that cuts the crust off your bread and a comb that is shaped for

your head are just a couple of things that 9-year-old George Holseberg has invented. And that was before he came to TTC’s Kids’ College summer camp, Tinkering on the Edge of Innovation.

The camp was the perfect fit for George and his friend Sam Wilson, who attended with him in August. Sam, who aspires to be a scientist, loves to take things apart to see how they work. He keeps notes and watches the show “How it’s Made” on television with his dad. George says he would like to be an inventor because, “It’s a thrill and accomplishment to take something that is really hard to do and make it easier.”

The boys learned about simple machines – inclined plane, wheel and axle, wedge, lever, pulley, screw – and eventually created their own Rube Goldberg, which is a series of devices designed to perform a simple task. They also visited the aeronautical classrooms on campus where the kids were able to see how the simple machines carry over in the real world.

The instructor, Colleen Shoemaker, who is a full-time teacher at College Park Middle School, says she loves coming back to teach every summer because the kids are so excited to be there. They already have an interest in the topic, so her job is to help ignite the interest and make it a fun week. She says she wants them to be able to leave camp with positive feelings about learning and maybe a desire to further pursue something they like. “There may have been a future engineer in my camp this summer,” she says. “I hope they think back on our work this week as a time that helped them along the way.”

George and Sam partnered up on their project for the class, which was to use three to five simple machines to complete a task. The boys chose to pop a balloon using a ramp/inclined plane, a pulley and a lever. When their parents were invited to watch the kids demonstrate all of their projects, their passion for the project was clear. As the balloon successfully popped the boys jumped up with excitement exclaiming, “It worked!”

Sam’s mother, Suzan Wilson, was pleased to see how excited he was about the camp. She says, “Sam is a very active kid, and it is nice to have something that engages him so much.”

George and Sam came to the TTC Kids’ College camp in 2016 for the first time and couldn’t wait to come back again this year. They both loved the Junior CSI camp, where they learned how to take fingerprints, and the Mind Your Manners camp, which George says he really didn’t want to attend but still had fun.

George’s parents Lynda and Stephen Holseberg are very pleased with the variety of camps offered at Kids’ College. Lynda says, “From manners to music to culinary arts, you have covered a lot of bases,” and Stephen adds, laughing, “We may have to run him back through the manners camp, though, I think he forgot a few things.”
