• air purifiers can help remove allergens, harmful particles and odours from your home. Be sure to do your research: air purifiers with HEPA filters, carbon-activated filters and electrostatically-charged dust collection grids all come highly recommended

• when weather permits, throw open your windows and air out your house!

• regular cleaning reduces airborne pollutants like pollen, pet dander and dust mites. Be sure to use non-toxic cleaning products or you’ll be replacing one air-quality issue with

another. Choosing low or no VOC cleaning products that are fragrance-free is a good start. Wash bedding once a week in hot water, and be sure to dust with a damp cloth, not a dry one

By lowering levels of known irritants and increasing ventilation whenever possible, your home can remain a healthy as well as happy sanctuary throughout the year!

Our own homes have always offered sanctuary from the outside world. During the colder months of winter, however, our sanctuary may not be as conducive to good rest and relaxation as it is the rest of the year. Closed windows and any number of indoor air pollutants - from wood-burning stoves and dryers to perfumes, glue, carpeting, pet dander, dust mites and mold - can contribute to headaches, long-lasting colds, bronchitis and asthma. Thankfully, there are a number of steps we can take to improve indoor air quality. To get you started...

• houseplants don’t just look nice - they clean and purify the air by absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen! Some are also great filters that can reduce toxic agents such as benzene and formaldehyde from your home. A few great starters include palms, spider plants, ferns and rubber plants. Check out the ‘NASA Clean Air Study’ for a list of pet-safe plants and which toxic agent(s) each has been shown to reduce

Being behind the wheel is stressful at the best of times. Add in several of the many challenges that can crop up including heavy traffic, being tailgated or cut off, detours, bad weather, screaming children, being late, being hungry, getting lost and you have conditions for a ‘perfect storm’ of stress. While many of the aforementioned are out of our control, taking charge of those we can manage and applying stress reduction techniques for those we can’t can help us arrive at our destination a little less frazzled.

Reducing Stress Behind the Wheel

• start out calm: don’t drive if exhausted or angry, both of which can impair our judgement

• figure out your route before you go, and allow enough time to get there

• if you have babies or children on board make sure to pack snacks/games/activities to keep them occupied

• distracted driving grooming, eating, talking on the phone or texting while driving can kill. Take care of basics before getting behind the wheel. ‘Be aware and drive with care’

• choose a cool mindset: accept that some people will not drive considerately or responsibly and decide that you won’t let them bother you. Get

away from aggressive drivers and don’t make eye contact. Labelling them in your mind for instance, calling them ‘an idiot’ can help get rid of your anger and lets you re focus on the road

• if you’re facing a long commute listen to an audiobook so it doesn’t feel like wasted time

• stuck at a light? Take the time to stretch and breathe deeply, both of which can reduce tension

Essentially what we have control over is how we manage ourselves within the world. With a bit of planning and self preparation we can make our time here and the trips we take great!

Page 12: What's On Digest Nanaimo February 2016

I’ve had a run of odd cases lately, and I thought I would share them with you. You see, I get a lot of comments from clients on how difficult it must be to have pa-tients that don’t tell me how they feel. I was thinking about that over the last few days, and realized that a lot of my patients do tell me ex-actly what they are thinking.

The most obvious are my nervous guys who just want to shut their eyes and get it over with. But everyone can see that. The funniest I saw was a cocker spaniel that ate an entire tennis ball. Not in pieces either. The whole thing was in his stomach. When I told his owner, I was pretty sure the smug look on his face was en-tirely, “My ball… and you can’t have it.”

The most pathetic was a little Pug who was absolutely not upset that she had eaten all that yummy chocolate. But she was extremely un-happy that she had to puke it back up again. She looked like a pathetic cartoon character, “I’m never going to eat chocolate again…never again…I can’t believe anyone would ever eat that much chocolate.” Poor girl.

The silliest was a bulldog that started coming in at 8 weeks, racing around the clinic, happy to be alive. You could see her counting off in her head which people she has spent time with, and who still needed to be blessed with her at-tention. She came in to get spayed and was so happy she continued to give kissed until she was completely asleep for her surgery.

The saddest was a lab when I had to tell her mom there was nothing else I could do. She got up and gave me a kiss on the face. She was very matter of fact. Telling me she understood, and she would stand by her mom until she couldn’t any more.

So, no. My patients don’t use words to tell me what stupid thing they ate, where exactly it

hurts, or how they think they managed to get tangled up in whatever it was they got tangled

up in. But they do tell me little things that reveal more about their personalities and love of the world they exist in. Whether it’s a ball, or food, or people, or their mom, you can see it on their faces, in the way they hold themselves, and the

little secret glances they share.

Your Computer Guy Article by Steve Duckett

Always Use Protection...I’m not talking about software protection like an antivirus, Im talking about protecting your device physically. Laptops, tablets and cell phones need a lot of external protection from drops and the elements.

Let’s start with your cell phone, sure everyone has a phone cover…right… but did you know if put on a gorilla glass cover on the screen it can save your phones screen from cracking if it is dropped.

Tablets as well can benefit from a gorilla glass cover. Add to that a UAG back cover and your tablet is pretty safe from damage.

As for your laptop you can put on a screen cover to save yours screen and always transport it in a protective laptop bag… check out aliexpress.com for cheap covers and bags... and urbanarmorgear.com for armour type covers.

If you break a laptop screen that is not a touchscreen come and see me and I’ll fix it up for you, most screens are only $100.00

YOUR FITNESS NOWHow Much Cardio Do You Need?Firstly, what is cardio? Cardio exercise uses large muscle movement over a sustained period of time keeping your heart rate to at least 50% of its maximum level. Such as biking, running, and walking, etc. Some of the tools can be found in the gym to be used for cardio: treadmill, bike, Stairmaster, row-ing-machine, and elliptical to name a few.Cardio related questions are some of the most fre-quently asked by people when they are starting a new workout regime. For example: how much cardio should I be doing on top of my weights? I believe that cardio is the most over utilized or misused tools for sustaining weight loss. Don’t get me wrong it’s hard to disprove some of the benefits of doing cardio. I am not saying don’t do any cardio at all. Lets do cardio smart in conjunc-tion with some other ways of training to really sustain weight loss and also avoid plateaus.Lets clear this up a little more...When clients first come to me doing cardio every single day and have for years. You would think they would be a shredded Goddess or God, but they are not, they’re stuck. (keep in mind their diets are pretty good) There is problem with doing your favorite cardio day in and day out. Our bodies are amazingly adaptable that they get used to that cardio within a 6-12 week period. This is why people start to notice their results diminish. What also happens is that we need to keep doing that same amount of cardio to sustain our current weight loss. So you can see how you could get stuck in this vicious cycle. You have to keep doing tons of cardio just to stay the same. Sounds pretty lame doesn’t it. IT IS LAME! It’s not necessary to work your self to the bone to get short-term results. Here is where I can come in to help stop this mad-ness! At Body Tempo I use cardio in a smarter way and in conjunction with weight training.

Weight training will really help increase your lean muscle mass. When over doing cardio you can decrease your lean muscle mass which is your metabolism making it harder and harder to lose body fat. Metabolism helps increase your fat burning power allowing you to do less and less cardio and losing fat without even trying that hard. People are always shocked to hear that I don’t do cardio year around and only when I compete. I did however have to do cardio to lose the fat mass initially. If you are in a rut and working yourself to the bone and starting to lose your initial results please message me for a free consultation to get you closer to your goal. As always send me an email [email protected] and tell me what you would like my next ar-ticle to be about!
