Attending the Community Support Worker program at DCC was incredible and rewarding. I not only achieved my academic goals, I was encouraged to discover new and exciting career opportunities. The support and training I received during the program gave me insight into this exciting field. The three practicum placements further solidified the training I received and gave me the opportunity to engage with people in a professional and genuine environment. I am now working full time as a Community Support worker. Positively influencing people’s lives feels great!Sarah 2015 Grad

After Hairdressing for 12 years, I found myself longing for something with a steady income. I checked out DCC’s program and found their schedule to be very flexible allowing me to continue working.

The instructor was a good fit with my learning style. I loved the program!!! Upon graduation I felt very prepared to start working in the field. I was hired 2 weeks after the program ended, as a casual. 2-3 weeks after that, I received a permanent full time line with benefits!! I love my job! I work 2 days, 2 evenings and 2 nights. All in All, it is “pretty Awesome”!

My long term goal is to go back to DCC to continue on with the Practical Nurse Access program.

Is your car trick or treater friendly? With Hallowe’en almost upon us it’s a good idea to make sure your vehicle does not pose a threat to the families out trick or treating on Hallowe’en night and as we move into the winter months.

Headlights. Get a friend to help you check your headlights. Check they are both working in high and low beams and check that the bulbs are clean. A dirty headlight will reduce its effectiveness.

Windshield. Clean the inside of your windshield. It’s surprising how dirty it gets and the degree to which this can cause poor visibility and glare.

Tires. Make sure you have your tires checked for pressure and for tread. If your tires are worn this can have a negative impact on your ability to stop the vehicle especially on slippery roads.

Your mechanic can also suggest other areas you should consider for your own safety and for the safety and security of others.

With no option available they founded Nanaimo’s only independent school offering the IB curricu-lum. What started small has grown.

Imagine having the opportunity to start your own school. What would you want for your children? What do you see them doing each day in their class-es, at recess, after school? Chances are that’s exactly what you’ll find at Aspengrove. Consider this:

• Beginning as early as three years of age stu-dents are in small classes, with specialist teachers, learning the same BC curriculum taught in all schools and then the IB curricu-lum challenges them far beyond that.

• Students are prepared for university and life after graduation by learning to ask great ques-tions, to solve problems, to be independent

learners, and to work with others on challeng-ing academic work.

• A new student will join a class and have friends before recess. He will feel safe and welcome in his new school right away. He was shy but just a few weeks later will have the courage to be master of ceremonies at a school assembly.

It’s extremely stressful to be receiving collection call but it’s important to know that debt collectors do have the right to contact you about the debts you owe. It is important that when you answer the phone that you gather some pertinent informa-tion: the collector’s name, the agency they repre-sent, who they are collecting for, both their phone and fax number and how much you owe.

Consumer Protection BC is responsible for enforc-ing BC’s debt collection law which deals with how debt collectors may communicate with debtors. This is summary of the information on their website.

Debt collectors are allowed to:

• Call you on a Sunday between 1 and 5 p.m.• Call you at work to request your home address

and phone number (but only if they don’t have it)• Make one attempt to contact you at work to

collect a debt (but only if they have been un-able to make contact)

• Contact your employer to confirm your em-ployment, business title and business address

• Contact a member of your family or household, relative, neighbour, friend or acquaintance to try to get your home address or phone number

Debt collectors are NOT allowed to:

• Call you after 9 p.m. or before 7 a.m.• Discuss details of your debt with someone else

(unless they have your permission)• Collect more than what is owing on the debt

(aside from interest at the rate in your original credit agreement)

• Contact you in a way that costs you money• Use threatening, profane or intimidating language• Exert undue, excessive or unreasonable pres-

sure to collect a debt• Publish or threaten to publish your failure to

pay (except to a credit reporting agency)

• Continue to contact you when you have re-quested in writing that the collection agency only communicate with you in writing and you have provided a mailing address

If you are struggling with collection calls, seek help from a debt relief specialist who will help you find a solution and set you on the road to fi-nancial freedom.

learned that this skill, stucco repair, is not in great abundance in Nanaimo. A few places never called back. Several more were no lon-ger in business (fly by night). One guy I called quoted me a price over the phone not having even seen the job?! Then I found a number for ‘Blain the Stucco Guy.’ I called him and left a message for him. A little later Blain called me back and let me know that he was going to be in my area later that evening. Sure enough around 7PM Blain showed up at my door and I showed him the job. He explained what likely needed to be done and we agreed on a price straight away. I thought his price was fair and the more I looked at the project the more I re-alized there was no way it was a home handy-man special and no way I could have done the work myself. Once Blain got into removing the damaged stucco he realized that the problem was a bit worse and that the structure under-

If so then there will come a time when you or someone you know will require some stuc-co repair. The trick is finding someone who knows his stuff, will listen to what you need and get the job done in a reasonable time frame at a reasonable price. Recently we moved to a new home and, you guessed it, it’s stucco. The home inspector (House Master) noted one par-ticular area of concern, the chimney, and sug-gested we get it looked at. He went a bit further in his analysis and told us pretty much that if we didn’t address the issue before winter that we would likely be looking at some water in-filtration issues. That was all the prompting we needed and right away I took it upon myself to get on the horn and get someone in. I did have a fleeting moment of thinking I could probably do it myself but after seeing all the steps involved I am more than a little happy I didn’t attempt it. After calling around a bit I

neath would need some carpentry attention. I took one look and agreed. I called my friend Darren at Creative Concepts Carpentry. Dar-ren indicated that I needed to do some re-building of the immediate area and needed to install some new flashing. I gave the OK to the work and Darren’s team had it fixed up within a couple of days. Now it was back to Blain to work some stucco magic. It took him a few trips, due to the process involved and the need to allow the material to dry between applications, and pretty soon Blain had my stucco chimney looking like new. I was ab-solutely amazed at how good the finished product ended up looking. Thanks to Blain, the stucco match is absolutely flawless to the point where I can’t tell the old from the new. I hope anyone reading this who has need of stucco repair will call my friend Blain for a quote. He’s a good guy with a gift for work-ing with stucco. Tell your stucco-dwelling friends and neighbors that when they need a stucco repair they need “Blain the Stucco Guy.” Call or text Blain for your stucco needs at 250-240-4099.

After 35 years of marriage, a married couple came for counselling. When asked what the problem was, the wife went into a passionate tirade listing every problem they’d ever over the years: neglect, lack of intimacy, emptiness, loneliness, feeling unloved and unlovable, an entire list of unmet needs she had endured. After allowing this for a length of time, the therapist stood, walked around the desk and after asking the wife to stand, he kissed her passionately as her husband watched with a raised eyebrow. Silently the woman sat down. The therapist turned to the husband and said,“This is what your wife needs at least 3 times a week. Can you see to it?” “Well,” he said, “I can drop her off here on Mondays and Wednesdays, but on Fridays, I go fishing.”

LIGHTNING TALKS AT THE BUSINESS EXPO!

Hatchman not only won both the grand prize, a 55-Inch 3D Television courtesy of London Drugs, but also a very significant secondary prize: a free half-day room rental from the Na-naimo Conference Center. While he continues to enjoy the TV, on almost a daily basis, it was the complimentary room that turned out to be a life changer. “For years,” says Hatchman, “I had a dream to produce, and appear in, a live show designed to help people improve both their personal and business communication skills. Winning a room rental that included a bunch of empty chairs and a lectern with a microphone was as if fate was telling me to stop dreaming and take action.” Hatchman approached Kim Smythe, president and CEO of the Nanaimo Chamber of Com-merce with an idea to create such a show called simply: Lightning Talks. The idea for the talks was to offer brief, yet powerful, seminars hence

the reference to lightning. Smythe agreed to not only MC the show, but act as co-producer. Light-ning Talks was off the ground. Lightning Talks have since spawned five sequels at a variety of local venues. The seventh installment returns to the Nanaimo Conference Centre at the Business Expo, October 22nd, 2015. In addition, two of the Lightning Talks were in partnership with Vancouver Island University’s MBA pro-gram, giving students an opportunity to interact with local business owners.

So what exactly are lightning talks, and why should you go?

As Hatchman explains, “the Nanaimo Lightning Talks are interactive business and personal de-velopment presentations, designed by a guy with a short attention span for people with similarly short attention spans. Instead of one presenter droning on for forty minutes, Lightning Talks has at least five speakers, including the MC, who have 7-9 minutes to deliver their presentation. If they’re still talking after 9 minutes, they are, shall we say, enthusiastically thanked off the stage with warm applause.”

Two years ago, Nanaimo entrepreneur David Hatchman attended the Greater Nanaimo Chamber of Commerce Business Expo for the first time. Like many attendees, he entered draws to win prizes. He got lucky.

Hatchman owns and operates VSP MEDIA which is a Nanaimo-based marketing company. VSP spe-cializes in small business promotional videos, web design, and search engine optimization. Hatchman says that although the services he provides are im-portant, they are not the only important way to market oneself in Nanaimo. “In this city, and pos-sibly more than any other I’ve lived in, networking is essential”, says Hatchman. “If you have the time, I’d recommend to anyone to simply spend fifty bucks on business cards and personally put them in people’s hands. Find out about what you can do for them and be sincere about it. Even better, introduce them to someone who can benefit from what they offer. I promise you they will, almost instinctively, remember you when somebody they know needs your product or service. In this way, personal referrals can be as good as gold.”

In addition to online marketing, Hatchman has done extensive public speaking and writing. Hatchman hosted a morning radio show for two years in Victoria, BC also and also managed to advance to the Provincial finals of the Toastmas-ters Humorous Speech Contest in Vancouver. He has done stand-up comedy at Yuk Yuk’s Comedy Cabaret in Toronto, and has had his written work published in Maxim Magazine. “The entertain-ment factor is huge” says Hatchman of Lightning Talks. “This is particularly so when presenting au-diences with personal and business development information. People are just more likely to remem-ber your key points if you’re able to deliver them with humour or at least a bit of panache!”

Tickets for Nanaimo Lightning Talks at the Business Expo are available at lightningtalks.ca or by calling the Nanaimo Chamber of Commerce at 250-756-1191.

The shows include a mini, interactive ‘Elevator Speech’ workshop. After which, attendees are given a chance to deliver a 45-second “infomercial” (informative commercial) promoting their business or personal brand. It’s a lot of fun for the presenter. Everyone in the room and each presenter is entered in a draw to win a small prize.

Your Computer Guy Article by Steve Duckett

SAVE YOUR VALUABLE FILES FOR 1000 YEARS

Imagine discovering that a vital, 30-year-old fami-ly document was stored on a 5.25-inch floppy disk. Worse yet, perhaps you discover the document was written in and old program like “WordStar.” To ac-cess it, you’d have to find a 5.25-inch floppy drive that connects to a modern computer. Then, assum-ing the disk was still readable (magnetic media does deteriorate over time), you’d need software that can read a WordStar file. Pretty unlikely.

Long story short: you simply cannot depend on be-ing able to open your valuable files years down the road for two basic reasons. First the medium on which the data was stored can, and will, deterio-rate over time. Second, you will actually need the program to run some of the files such as Microsoft Word. The answer…store your files on an “M-Drive” DVD. This solution is virtually guaranteed for 1000 years. Just ensure that on the DVD you have a copy of Word or whatever other software you need to open the files in the future! Simple enough but if not just come see me and I’ll sort you out!

A hundred years ago New York editor Arthur Bris-bane coined the term “a picture’s worth a thousand words”. He had no idea how this truism would transcend journalism to describe the unimaginable opportunities medical technology would provide a century later. In hospitals around the globe CT Scanners (computed tomography scanners) have become a vital tool with which to diagnose illness. The “CT” is a doughnut shaped X-Ray machine that takes a multitude of cross-sectional images, like a ‘slice’. The CT helps avoid invasive measures during diagnosis, but provides a 3-D picture worth more than a thousand words.

At Nanaimo Regional General Hospital (NRGH) seven technologists (part & full time) performed 17,500 CT Scans last year. The NRGH CT ma-chines are the oldest operating Scanners on Van-couver Island, but that will soon change.

It is relevant to discuss the difference between CT Scans and MRI (Magnetic resonance imag-ing) Scans. MRI is advanced diagnostic imaging using magnetic fields and radio frequency to cap-ture internal images of patients. MRIs do not use radiation and are regarded as most useful when diagnosing soft tissue issues, but it can take up to 45 minutes to scan a specific body region. CT Scanners are preferred where there are “marked density” boundaries, such as “air-soft” tissue in the lungs, or “bone-soft” tissue in the extremi-ties. By using “intravenous contrasting agents”

a CT can be used for almost every region of the body. Due to their speed CT Scans are preferred for trauma cases, emergency cases, and critically ill patients needing constant monitoring. Due to their non-magnetic process CT’s can also be performed on patients with pacemakers and an-eurysm clips.

What’s changing? New CT technology has de-creased exposure to radiation for patients under-going scans by as much as 1/10th of existing ex-posure. Additionally, the time it takes to capture an image has drastically decreased, so patients are exposed for shorter scans. The NRGH Medi-cal Imagine Department is currently unrolling a plan to replace its aging CT machines, and reno-vations will start this autumn.

With new CT technology cardiac scanning will be more exact as an image will be captured in one and a half heartbeats rather than four. Addition-ally, a CT scan will take a fraction of the current time; reducing incidental radiation exposure for sensitive organs, children, and infants. In fact, radiation exposure will almost parallel regular X-Rays. The Nanaimo & District Hospital Founda-tion is able to pledge $900,000 for the purchase of one of two needed CT Scanners thanks to donors like you. If you would like to learn more about this exciting project or make a donation please visit www.nanaimohospitalfoundation.com or call 250-755-7690.

Page 25: What's On Digest October 2015

We’ve been looking at ways to decrease cat stress when they are at the clinic so that they become more comfortable when they need to seek medical care. I am sitting and writing this with an 8 week old kitten on my lap, and real-ized that this is where it starts.

Kittens are much more open to new situations then their adult counterparts. Because of this, we assume they don’t need as many calming tech-niques as adult cats. But this isn’t true.

Kittens are still cats, and providing calming mechanisms to PREVENT anxiety from de-veloping is even more important, and much easier, then helping adult cats deal with the ANXIETY they already have. Prevention is certainly the key, and decreasing the develop-ment of anxiety will pay off as your kitten be-comes a cat.

As we talked about last month: All cats should travel in their carrier. Not only do you drastically decrease the risk they will get lost, but it provides a traveling territory for them.

Make the carrier more comfortable by getting a special pheromone from your veterinarian. Pheromones are air borne smells that affect the way we react to our environment. The way this works is similar to how certain smells remind us of happy moments in our lives. Although smells aren’t pheromones, they can induce a feeling of comfort in us that is similar to the way pheromones work.

Finally, remember kittens are little kids. Treat them like it. The best parenting advice I ever got was: distraction, distraction, distraction. And it works for kittens too. Bring treats, toys, catnip, and make it a fun trip. But don’t push it.

You can’t force fun, so take your cue from your kitten. If they want quiet cuddles, then be ready with those. If they want to explore, be ready to let them (if it’s safe). But if they are ready for a good game of chase, make sure you have a toy ready to go.

Finally, wellness plans can help as your visits are included in your monthly fees. This will allow you to break up visits if they become too stress-ful, or bring kittens in for friendly visits. You can then use this time to talk with the veterinarian about your kitten’s development without worry-ing about costs.

Kittens need to visit the veterinarian. As they age, cats need preventive medicine so that they age healthy and happy. There are a lot of techniques to make this a smooth and happy experience. We will be continuing this discussion next month!

YOUR FITNESS NOWstarted with my thoughts…in-stead of allowing “negative Nancy” to “talk” to me. I would set out a weekly goal to practice “Self Love.” Yes SELF LOVE. I know for me I didn’t like the idea at first and thought it was kind of silly. I would stand in front of the mirror and I would say out loud what I like about myself. This can be anything you like about yourself. For example: if you have beau-tiful eyes say it out loud or if you have beautiful skin say that out loud. This is mantra is not limited to your physical self. If you are a caring & loving person say it! If you are amazing at being a mother say it out loud! You will be surprised at the affect it has on your sense of self-worth. If you are good at something don’t be ashamed to say it. It’s good to be proud of yourself and your accomplishments!

My goal for all women and men is to stop being so judgmental toward yourself. I want you to be proud of “you”, for who you are and where you are in this moment. Let’s stop focusing on what we don’t like and pay more attention to what we do like. Focus on what’s great about this moment and not what you would like from your future self. Enjoy every mo-ment and remind yourself that you really are beauti-ful inside and out.

Thank you so much for reading. I am truly grateful to you and hopefully I have, or can, help you in some way big or small.

I am in an industry where most people come my way wanting to change something they don’t like about themselves. Sometimes even fixated on areas of themselves that they despise and they want change.

I have had hundreds of health and fitness consulta-tions over the years. What I have gathered thus far. When it comes to ourselves and our bodies is that we under appreciate them for who and what we are and can be. Our bodies are quite magnificent ma-chines in so many ways.

OK I will admit I have been guilty of SELF HATE in the past. When I used to look in a mirror, I could zero in on what I didn’t like in about 0.53 seconds. My thoughts: “thighs were too big, my arms where clunky, I always seemed to carry Michelin tire around my mid-section and the list goes on. I was focusing on everything I didn’t like about myself. Not surprisingly… all my negativity never seemed to help any of the above change.

Those days are gone and I have since changed my thought process entirely. I realized that in order to change my outside I need to work on my inside. I

You are beautiful!
