Being at or finding a ‘home’ is perhaps the most cherished notion people carry with them: it means far more emotionally than the dry definition of ‘one’s place of residence’. ‘To be home’ is an emotional state where you feel comfortable and accepted as you are, whether that be by others or by yourself. There is a sense of freedom that comes with ‘being at home’: freedom to be yourself, to create, to rest. To be ‘at home in one’s own skin’ is a delightful feeling of liking oneself regardless of where you are or what circumstances you find yourself in. Paul Young’s version of the song ‘Wherever I

Where is Your Home?

HOME&LIFE

Page 5: What's On Digest Nanaimo May 2016

Lay My Hat (That’s My Home)’ speaks to the notion that one’s home is really within oneself and we carry it with us wherever we go. ‘Home is where the heart is’ links us to the notion that wherever we love and feel loved, that is our home. ‘Make yourself at home’ means to ‘help yourself, take your shoes off, relax’. When people are killed away from their own country, families often to go great expense to ‘bring them home’. There are even posters of our beautiful earth with the word ‘home’ underneath. So home can be as big as a planet, or as small as your favourite pub or corner of the library. In these times when home ownership is out of reach for many, it can be heartening to think of the fact that we can all have a ‘home’ of our own.

Applecross Veterinary Hospital is pleased to announce the opening of Nanaimo Animal Rehabilitation Centre. We are seeing patients starting May 10 so get your appointment today! What is Rehabilitation? What is it for? Who needs it? Great questions! Rehabilitation is basically the same as human physiotherapy….except our patients don’t usually come in able to point to a

muscle or joint that’s causing them problems. Their family knows they’re uncomfortable, and they can sometimes pin point a specific part of the body that’s causing a problem. That’s where we take over.Dr. Westworth is becoming certified as a rehabilitation specialist. She knows exactly what to look for on a dog or cat to localize where the problem is. She takes measurements to look for joint mobility, and to localize any muscle wasting or nerve problems, then she comes up with a plan. The plan consist of two parts. What we do at the clinic, and what you do at home. In clinic work consists of pushing your friend to achieve better flexibility and using specialized equipment to move them forward in their treatment plan. At home work consists of together time with you and your pet, learning new tricks and progressing together towards a healthier lifestyle.Who needs rehabilitation? Any dog (or cat!) that is slower then they used to be, who just had surgery, who has a sore leg, who is overweight, who seems stiff when they wake up….pretty much any pet who’s body is just not working the way it should. How do I sign up!? It’s easy. Your veterinarian will be able to provide Dr. Westworth with a diagnosis and a referral so she has a good place to start. We will then provide your veterinarian with updates so they are kept up to date on how your pet is progressing. If you don’t already see a veterinarian, the medical side of our practice, Applecross Veterinary Hospital, can provide that service for you.We can’t wait to get started in the new Nanaimo Animal Rehabilitation Centre. And move some of that equipment out of our medical practice! Contact us today for more information and to get started!

“...before you roll down the windows, cue the playlists and hit the highway, take some time to prepare and

anticipate.”

Since the advent of motorized vehicles the idea of ‘hitting the open road’, escaping from everyday cares and having a grand adventure has been part of popular culture. The idea that romantic or personal fulfillment and familial harmony are just a drive away has been scrutinized, celebrated and ‘lampooned’ in road trip films like ‘Easy Rider’, Thelma and Louise’, ‘Little Miss Sunshine’, ‘Sideways’ and ‘National Lampoon’s Vacation’. American writers Jack Kerouac (“On the Road”), William Least Heat-Moon (“Blue Highways”) and Walt Whitman (“Song of the Open Road”) have elevated the road trip from a simple drive down the highway to a soul-seeking journey. Yet the question remains: does the ‘open road’ really exist outside of our imaginations? The English definition of ‘open road’ is ‘a road or highway allowing easy travel, especially one outside an urban area where progress is unimpeded’. Given the realities of ever-growing

traffic congestion and summer construction, that ‘open road’ can remain elusive. And without at least a little planning, road trips can go horribly wrong: hotels can be booked, campgrounds full, children bored, and traffic thick, making your seemingly impulsive jaunt a little more burdensome that you had hoped. So before you roll down the windows,

cue the playlists and hit the highway, take some time to prepare and anticipate. There are plenty of websites with great ideas on how to make your travels as enjoyable and smooth as possible. Planning your trip may not be as romantic as

simply grabbing the keys and heading out the door to the great unknown, but it may spare you a lot of grief later. And if the idea of spending a week or two in a small space with cranky children or a carsick dog is too much for you, simply roll down the windows, cue the playlists and head to the nearest video store for some vicarious road trip enjoyment!

Sanity Saving Shopping Tips...Shop Early in the Season...This is when the selection is at its best. Seasons in retail are always ahead of the temperature outside. Women are often disappointed when looking for a sundress or shorts in July. Fall Season begins for retail after the 4th of July typically.. And a very popular new addition to retail is cruise/resort which begins in Nov/ Dec… So shop for your must- have pieces ahead while the going is good. Are You a Sale Shopper? If you love skimming the clearance racks use it as a last chance to find a fun addition to your wardrobe. A little extra. It is not likely that you will find a must-have item in your size. Remember there may be a sizing issue or hard to match item if it is on a sale rack. A bargain is only a bargain if it doesn’t sit in your closet. Not Fond of Crowds?Try booking a personal shopping apt with us at KC’s Boutique where we can come in a bit early or plan to give you personal attention. This is quite and enjoyable experience if you have just lost or gained weight and need to get some important pieces in your wardrobe. There is no cost to this service, so if you’re intentional in completing your wardrobe...talk to the staff and work out a time. Or it is often a bit quieter first thing in the morning or around 4pm when people are at home starting their dinners.Shop Your Favourite StoresConsistently shop at a few of your favourite stores. The owners of the boutiques or sales staff will get to know what you like. They may even call you when they know there is a particular brand that fits you well so you won’t miss out at the beginning of a shipment. Build a relationship with these stores and you will find you will have an exquisite go to wardrobe.Plan for a Big EventDon’t leave things to the last minute. You will end up purchasing a make do outfit for that special occasion. Don’t you want to look and feel your personal best?

ExperimentTry things on you aren’t sure about if you trust your favourite store to advise you on fit and colours they have experience in. We often hear … “I would never have looked at that on the rack and I love it..”Expect AlterationsWe are all a little different in in our shapes... Don’t expect a standard fit to work every time. Customize clothes to fit your body.Lastly Get Over Size ObsessionIt is very difficult to guage sizing of items. Ask for a clerks advice on fit consider the fabrics and if designer is made in U.K. or Canada or China... It may affect the size.Come visit our store today!

Vancouver Island is home and inspiration to some of Canada’s finest painters. They are members of The Federation of Canadian Artists (FCA), a premier art organization, founded in 1941 by a group of Canadian artists, including the Group of Seven luminary, Lawren Harris. The public are invited to view an impressive collection of quality and diverse original art.

Show Chair Vida Newington thinks this is a great way to kick start the summer. “Why not plan a Saturday evening downtown? Take in the art show, then have a meal at one of the many excellent downtown restaurants. Or, plan some quality family time; head down and let the art inspire the young ones. Pick out your favorite painting and compare your ideas. Drop off your votes in the box for the Iron Oxide People’s Choice Award.” Following the show, the winner will be posted on the chapter website www.nanaimofca.com “Our exhibition and sale is much anticipated and has received excellent support from the Nanaimo business community, allowing us to mount a show unlike anything we have done before. We are really excited to bring this to Nanaimo!”

Tom Shardlow, President of the Nanaimo FCA Chapter is excited to see local chapter members host an event of this caliber for the Nanaimo community. “The Nanaimo Fine Art Show will assemble the best of original art by artists living on Vancouver Island and surrounding Islands. Many are internationally recognized and we’re pleased to present their work in a Nanaimo showcase.” He feels that art is for everyone, especially original works which retain the subtle textures and brushwork that are often lost in reproductions. Collecting original art gives a pride of ownership that prints simply can’t provide.

This exhibition and sale is sure to be a crowd-pleaser with something for everyone: serious collectors as well as those who just love to look. Mark your calendar, make the time to go and show your support for keeping the finest of Fine Art coming to Nanaimo!

NANAIMO’S OWN!

“NEW Customer” Coupon

THIS COUPON is for any NEW customer that would like to have their PC computer or Windows laptop repaired. Just tear it out of this magazine or take a picture of it with your smart phone and bring it with you to get 10% off the already low price of $60.00.

It doesn’t really matter how you get the coupon to my repair shop. You can even draw it on a paper napkin that you are using right now for lunch and bring that with you. Any way you want to recreate the coupon you can… actually I’d be curious to see just how imaginative you can be with the image. As a matter of fact I’ll keep track of the most imaginative coupon and give that person a FREE REPAIR (labor only). I’ll keep this going until the end of the month. This should be interesting!!!

JOKE of the Month

C At about 3AM, I was drunk as a skunk. I came home just in time to hear the cuckoo clock cuckoo three times. Quickly coming up with a plan, I cuckooed nine more times, hoping my wife would think it was midnight. I was very proud of myself.

The next day, my wife asked what time I got home, and I replied, “Midnight, just like I said.”

She said that was good, and for some reason she said we needed a new cuckoo clock. When I asked why, she answered, “Last night when it cuckooed midnight, it cuckooed three times, said ‘Shit!’, cuckooed four more times, farted, cuckooed three times, cleared its throat, cuckooed two more times and then started giggling.”

Weekend for Life Hardcore for Healthcare!

SAT MAY 21 CONT...

Did you read about it in What’s On? Have you heard it on the radio? Maybe your friends have been chatting! It’s time to join the pack and take your fitness to the next level with a personal challenge that is fun and achievable! The Weekend for Life is happening this month! Join the Nanaimo & District Hospital Foundation in a double-header weekend like no other.

FIRST UP... Saturday May 28th cyclers will be taking their mark at the Nanaimo Airport and pedaling a 25KM, 50KM, or 100KM route through picturesque Cedar and Yellow Point. Doesn’t that sound fantastic? The Foundation is excited to partner with the Nanaimo Airport Authority for this inaugural event. How do you get started? Visit www.rideforlifenanaimo.ca to register, create a team, or pledge the rider you’ll be cheering for.

NEXT UP... Sunday May 29th the Hospital Foundation is partnering with Central Vancouver Island Financial Institutions to host the 13th Annual Run for Life. Simply run, walk, strut, or stroll your way to a fun 5KM success story. Are you an experienced runner, an annual participant, or maybe just getting started? Everyone is welcome to join and be at the frontline of equipping your

hospital with life-changing equipment. Are you up for the personal challenge? Visit www.nanaimohospitalfoundation.com/run to register. Sign up for the Run before noon on May 26th for early bird prices.

The Weekend for Life is your chance to be a game changer. Proceeds from the Run and the Ride will help fund one of two new CT Scanners at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital (NRGH).

The new CT Scanners will decrease scan times, provide state-of- the-art image clarity, and decrease exposure to radiation. Follow the Foundation on Facebook for training tips and event updates. YOUR FITNESS NOWRoad to the Arnold Classic Sports Festival March 5th 2016As some of you may already know I am an International Figure competitor. What does that mean? It means I compete in Natural Body Building competitions as a hobby. I have been competing in all natural competition since 2008. I typically compete once a year. I do this to keep myself accountable and track with continuing my road to ultimate fitness and health. Some of you know that Arnolds Classic Sports Festival is not a “natural” venue but I maintained my goals to remain natural. It’s just a personal choice. I don’t compete to be the very best but rather to be my very best without using Performance enhancing drugs. My training for event usually consists of year round training with a lean phase of approx. 22 weeks. I know some other competitors choose to have shorter leaning phases. I choose to do 22 weeks as I feel it is better for the body to slowly lean down and mitigates the common issue of gaining more weight when competition is over, and just generally less physical stress. It is always a different journey which each stage I stand on but Arnolds Sports Festival was one of my bucket list shows. It was an incredible event and the largest event to date for me. It was a journey on its own just stand next to some worldwide competitors. Most of who didn’t even speak English. I was happy to make top ten out of 24 beautiful physiques. I feel I did my country proud which that placing. I worked my butt off, literally to be apart of this historical moment in my life.I even got a picture with my Sponsors Magnum Nutraceuticals (based in White Rock BC), who produce pharmaceutical grade supplements, and Arnold Schwarzenegger one of my biggest sources of motivation in this sport and in life in general. Someone that came from nothing and really made it to the top! Here is one of my favourite quotes: “Strength does not come from winning. Your struggles develop your strengths. When you go through hardships and decide not to surrender, that is strength. ~Arnold SchwarzeneggerHappy Training!!

A rollicking program of music and humour, their annual May show will take you to a remote and imaginary South Sea island where the barbershoppers are marooned after a big storm.
