In this issue, of Holistic Discoveries,we ask our talented authors to consider the conscious rituals of Piercing Illusions.

The hieroglyphs from thousands of years ago, illustrate how humans have contemplated themany realms beyond our own ego and the literal

world in which we live. As we grow beyond the cage we have createdaround ourselves, we begin to realize that others have a different view. With that realization we begin to question some of our own values andaccept our own illusions.

Piercing our own illusions requires an open heart that shows us thepath beyond our own thinking. Explore the enclosed articles with anopen mind and heart as you let go of the attachments of your illusions.

We also invite you to notice our advertisers as they made this publication possible, and they would appreciate your interest in their products and services.

Lil’s CornerBy Lillian F. Bernhagen, R.N., M.A., H.C.

I touch it gently as I pass,This image held behind a glassSo cold, so hard, and yet I’ve knownThe tenderness you’ve always shownUnselfishly, a part of you,That radiates from eyes so blue.

Your smile from lips so soft and warm,Touched mine oft’ gently, or with stormOf passion, each one being born Of love’s desire, so freely sharedBy two soul’s hearts who really cared,

I clutch the frame, so rigid, square,Depressing flesh of breast, now bare,Where oft’ you dozed into the night,Till you became relaxed and light,Dropped into slumber, oh so deepThat n’er a touch disturbed your sleep.

The frame, now gently I replaceOn dresser top, where loving faceWill watch steadfastly through the night,Until the dawning morning light.A breeze wafts through the evening air,I feel your spirit, know you’re there.

Morpheus calls, “Come now to rest,”And as I snuggle in my nest,I sense your cheek, so soft and smooth On pillow shared, then as I moveToward slumber sweet with blessed dreams,There comes a peace, a sigh that seemsTo say, let go, feel quietude,And breathe a prayer of gratitude,For years of joy and tears you spentIn living love’s true testament.

The Mother of All IllusionsBy Sister Pat Rooks

n my own life I feel that the greatest of all illusions and

the one most difficult to overcome is the illusion of

being a separate entity rather than part of one cosmic

unity. I am usually considering “the other” rather than

experiencing being part of a great cosmic person. This is the

true meaning of the saint’s detachment from self. One does

not belong to himself or herself, but to the Divine Unity.

The great illusion is to consider that the self has an absolute

freedom, that it is a law unto itself, a static entity complete

in itself. Rather the essential nature of the self is the power

of self-transcendence, of surrendering to the higher Self,

the Spirit within all.

In my effort to pierce this illusion of separateness,

I have turned to Eastern thought where the Self, the Atman,

the Ground of personal being is one with the Brahman,

the Ground of universal being. It is, I believe, what St. Paul

meant when he wrote: “Yet in fact God is not far from any

of us, since it is in God that we live and move, and have our

being.” Acts. 17: 28.

Bede Griffiths, monk and author of Return to the

Center, writes: “When considered apart from Brahman, the

absolute Reality, this world has no reality at all. It is pure

illusion, absolute nothingness. Wisdom consists in the

awakening to the unreality of this world, to the knowledge

that “all is Brahman”. But once this is realized, then the world

recovers all its reality. Everything that exists in this world,

down to the minutest particle of matter, exists eternally

in Brahman. Here (in this illusion of separation) we see

everything separated in space and time, changing from

one moment to the next, but there (in the reality of unity)

everything is present to everything else in an absolute

simplicity of being without duality. Here all is multiplicity

and change, there everything is one in eternal repose.”

When we see things in total unity, we see as God sees. This

wisdom gives me the feeling of great oneness with all of creation,

with plants, flowers, birds, and animals. This feeling gives me

great joy! Then I wonder why all “others” do not see and feel this

also and, again, I am trapped in the “Mother of all Illusions”.

his issue’s topic is “piercing illusions”. So, are these

illusions that are “piercing”, or are we being invited

to “pierce” our illusions??? Hmmmm. Either way you

look at it, we are being invited to address the concept

of “illusions”. Webster says an illusion is a “misleading image,

something that causes misinterpretation of its actual nature.”

So what is the “actual nature” of anything which is perceived?

Fast forward, if you will, from Webster to quantum

physics. Amazing experiments have proven that we actually

create what we are seeing: that the actual fact of perception

changes that which is seen and that nothing is actual beyond

the data given us by our sense organs as we translate vibration

into sight, smell, touch, hearing and taste. We can all agree that

eye witnesses seldom agree on much of anything! Each person

saw what they saw in a unique way (not to mention the even

more unique act of remembering). So what is “actual” and who

“actually” saw it as it “really” happened”? Is there an objective

“actually” or “really”? Fact is, there isn’t! So how can we “pierce

illusions” when it’s all illusion! How do you get to what is “real”

when we are constantly making it up as we go along?

(Pause. Now before you go getting all confused and

upset over all this uncertainty, be aware that we have all

experienced enough cultural, familial, educational, and social

shaping, that most of us can agree on what a tree is….or a

car….or most anything! Thus we share enough of a common

perceptual ground for effective interaction and worldly

functioning. Whew!)

Back to exploration of “illusion”. So I believe that the central

question is this — will you choose to perceive “piercing” illusions

or “pleasing” illusions? Will you choose cutting, biting, loud,

shrill or pleasurable, gratifying, delightful, joyous? It’s your

choice! Modern science has proven that you are making these

choices all the time, in every moment, and constantly creating

the life you know as yours. This is powerful. This says that you

have the power to create worlds – yours, to be more accurate.

What kind of world will you create? What will you

choose to perceive? If we all truly understood how life really

works, we would be foolish to create anything other than

bliss. You do have this power. You are using it in every

moment. How do you like your life? Your world? The people

in it? You will “have it your way” as you cannot have it any

other way! The question is —what way will that be? Piercing

or pleasing? Only you get to decide for you. I invite you to

choose Heaven on Earth.

Let me hear from you! Comments & questions are welcome!

How do we know the difference between a dream and reality? Is it possible that we interpret our external world edited by our ego’s agenda?Everything we see, smell, hear, feel, or taste is an interpretation of our ego.

I am fascinated by how the human ego can easily be reprogrammed toexperience any of our five senses with illusion, delusion, and confusionthrough the simple process of post-hypnotic suggestions. Many of us haveexperienced how hypnotized people have very different experiences merelythrough the power of suggestion. The important question is: How do weknow when we are in or out of a hypnotic trance at any given moment? Our ego also creates “stories” around our life experiences that we connect to anynew experience, linking the past to the present. Is it possible that everythingwe experience, external to our self, is filtered through an ego that associatesany life event with our history? If the human ego is defended so it filtersevery future experience through the five senses, then how could we possiblyunderstand any realm beyond anything we haven’t already encountered?

11

Early explorers to the New World reported the mysterious experience ofthe Natives, who could not see the sailing vessels because those large shipswere completely outside the native frame of reference. In our modern daylives, we only know what we’ve experienced and we don’t know what wehaven’t. So the question is: How do we live beyond our attachments, stories, and ego illusions?

Piercing illusions is a conscious effort to not discount how our limitedego projects our values, emotions, and thoughts into how we evaluate reality.Asking our ego parts to challenge every interpretation is a process of explainingnew concepts to our mother, father, and child ego parts. It is an intention tomove an ego with a typical emotional age of 3-6 years into a maturing passageof self realization. It is a process of understanding that our illusions have avaluable purpose to keep us in self preservation mode until we are ready tofind a new level of growth.

Piercing illusions is also a process of challenging everything and acceptingthat every story has more than one perception. It is a process of teaching theego self to allow and accept life with less judgment and understand that everyexpression is necessary in the mind of Creator. Piercing our illusions also comesfrom the sensitivity and understanding that our incarnation is a journey ofdestiny that allows us to experience the polarity of extremes so we can live inthe balance point of choice. Accepting the shadow and light side of how ourego manages life events gives us the wisdom to embrace the cycles of this existence. We learn to flow with the energy of life and clearly understand thatwe are part of a consciousness far greater than self. We learn to make our stories part of our life, rather than becoming the stories.

Another process of piercing illusions is to teach the ego how to embracethe power of imagination and intuition. Imagination allows us to exploremany realms beyond our literal experience and it can become a great sourceof insight, inspiration, and validation. Imagination allows us to think and feel outside of our own ego values and consider possibilities. Intuition is ourconnection to the holographic intelligence of all creation and keeps us frombeing attached to the illusion of time, space, and motion. Learning toembrace our intuition is often as simple as asking the ego to guess at a newway of thinking or feeling about life. Anytime we guess, we move the egofrom childish to childlike, and we experience life through the innocence and emptiness without attaching preconceived ideas.

Piercing illusions is a skill we learn through experiencing the confiningconsequences of living in the limits and boundaries of our own ego and thenchoosing to explore life beyond those illusions. Finally, many people chooseto experience intuition and imagination through exploring mass consciousnesswith the silence and stillness of meditation. Often in meditation messagesbeyond the literal realm appear spontaneously as we explore the deeper purposeto life. Connecting our Higher Self to our lower self through non verbal communication gives us insight to the synchronicity and serendipity of all of our experiences.

John A. McMullin, H.C. is the founder of Journeys of Wisdom where thousands ofpeople have benefited from his intuitive, holistic teachings. Through the hundredsof classes available and different modalities offered, attendees have discovered spiritual and harmonious self empowerment leading to paths of wellness. By Paul Linden, Ph.D.

iercing an illusion sounds like popping a

bubble. Poke the illusion with the sharp

stick of truth, and the illusion will instantly

shatter and disappear. Sometimes it’s that

fast and sometime it’s a lot slower. As a somatic edu-

cator, I frequently have to help my students break

through beliefs that rule their bodies and their lives,

and I have developed a somatic method of popping

belief bubbles.

Subjecting beliefs to body testing is a powerful

way to pierce illusions. A common belief, for example,

is that when you are emotionally or physically wide

open, you are more vulnerable. It certainly feels safer

when you’re closed, with a hard shell, but are you

actually safer? Is the belief/feeling accurate?

Rather than simply telling a student that a belief

is wrong, I teach by setting up a movement experiment

to test the adequacy of the belief. That way, a student

can experience for her/himself whether the belief is

accurate, or not. The simple, obvious way to test this

belief about safety and vulnerability is to have a person

try to protect him/herself in open and closed positions.

A convenient experiment is for me try to poke a

student in the belly while they stand in whatever they

think a protected, defensive posture would be. Almost

always, people will cross their hands over their belly to

try to prevent to me from touching them. And almost

always, they are so stiff, tense and immobile that I can

easily poke them in spite of their defensive efforts.

As a contrast, I ask the student to stand with their feet

P

HD Master Oct 07 layout 9/17/07 1:51 PM Page 12

13

apart, their arms spread wide open, and their muscles and

breathing soft. People quickly realize that in this wide open

and relaxed stance they can move their arms freely to block

my poke. That provides concrete evidence that their belief

was incorrect.

A similar experiment can be carried out to test whether

emotional attacks—for example, being yelled at—are handled

better when a person is tensed and contacted or relaxed and

wide open, and similar results would be experienced. In other

words, the belief that being closed is safer is an illusion. And that

illusion can be pierced through body awareness experiments.

On the one hand, body awareness experiments are pretty

simple, but on the other hand, there is a lot hidden behind the

scenes. An important but unobvious aspect to this process of

testing beliefs has to do with the twin concepts of verifiability

and falsifiability. A verifiable statement is one which is capable

of being supported by evidence. A falsifiable statement is one

which is capable of being disproved by evidence. In the

example given above, the belief, that being closed is safe, is

capable of both verification and falsification. If my poke had

been stopped more easily in the closed position, that, would

have counted as evidence verifying the belief. The fact that it

is easier to stop my poke in the wide open stance is evidence

that definitely refutes or falsifies the belief.

To be properly testable, beliefs must be capable of being

both verified and falsified. It’s not enough to gather evidence

to verify the belief. The belief also has to be phrased in such a

way that it is possible to specify what evidence would show

the belief to be false.

Take, for example, the following belief that an avid skier

might hold: “When I do a snow dance, it will snow.” If I were

to do the snow dance and it didn’t snow, then the statement

is conclusively shown to be wrong. However, if I do the dance

and it does snow, that will support the belief, but not

conclusively. It could have been a fluke, or perhaps the dance

has to accompany certain specific weather conditions, etc, etc.

Falsifiability is stronger than verifiability since it definitively

weeds out inaccurate beliefs.

On the other hand, consider the very different belief:

“When I do the snow dance right, it will snow.” That is

verifiable but not falsifiable. If I do a snow dance and it does

snow, that is evidence supporting the belief. But there is no

possible evidence that would count as refuting it. The idea

of right is a fudge factor. The fudge factor would allow me to

say every time it didn’t snow, “Oh, yes, I did the dance wrong,

but the belief is still true.”

This may seem trivial, but it really is important. The

function of beliefs is to guide our actions. But only accurate

beliefs are good guides, and if a belief is phrased in such a

way that, by definition, it could never be wrong, then we

really cannot know if it is accurate in any concrete, practical

way. Imagine our skier trying to generate some snow. They

could waste a lot of time and energy doing the dance over

and over, trying to do it right. However, if they were acting

on the basis of the belief, “When I do the snow dance, it will

snow,” the situation is much simpler. If they try the snow

dance and it doesn’t snow, they don’t get fixated on repeating

the dance. They accept that it doesn’t work, and they move

on to finding something else that does work—using snow

making machines, for instance.

In the body work I do, I travel back and forth among

musculoskeletal, movement, emotional, and cognitive levels,

and a key element is using the body to test beliefs and intentions.

Without concrete, practical tests, all beliefs are equally valid.

But using the body allows me to help my students distinguish

their effective beliefs from their illusions.

Smoke and MirrorsBy Leigh A. Randolph, M.S., D.D.S.

here are times I look in the mirror

and see someone very different from

the person I encountered there yesterday.

Sometimes it is a positive change, some-

times not so much. Intellectually I know the

difference isn’t really external, and yet it appears

so to me. Are there mornings you look in the mirror and

don’t feel fit to be out in the world? You feel overweight,

sloppy, unattractive, or just unfit to be a part of the human

race? What happened? Yesterday wasn’t such a bad day –

what changed?

On some of those days you may encounter people you know

and feel let down, angered, or disenchanted at what you see.

What happened there?

When these things happen we are encountering the

illusory part of reality and if we look behind the curtain,

we may find that it really is all smoke and mirrors. The hard

part is discovering that we hold the membership card to

the magician’s union. We own the curtain, the smoke,

and the mirrors. We are the Wizard.

What do we do with all that power? We use it

in diverse ways to order our world. We can have

the surety that we know who is trustworthy and

who is not. We are sure we know who other people

really are, and that we know who we are. Or we

may be sure that others mistreat us and it is simply

their way in the world. We may forget to wonder if it has

anything to do with our perceptions of a person or a situation.

Perceptions are the molecules and atoms of the smoke and

mirrors and they change depending upon our experiences

of our world and of how we function in that environment.

A changing reflection in the mirror likely reflects an

event within the previous day or hours that has pierced the

illusion that we are in control of the Universe around us.

We may have come away with that uncomfortable sense of a

shift in perception, much like looking through a prism and

seeing a very different viewpoint. That feeling may provide

relief or may deliver an awakened sense of our own set of

smoke and mirrors that reveals the need to look behind the

curtain and re-evaluate our established sense of reality.

T

HD Master Oct 07 layout 9/19/07 8:44 AM Page 14

Page 17: Where the Mind Meets the Heart Volume 2, Number 5 ... · accept our own illusions. Piercing our own illusions requires an open heart that shows us the path beyond our own thinking

15

When those shifts happen it reminds me that how I

perceive the world is a subjective choice. As complicated as

we humans are I suspect total objectivity is either nearly

impossible or at best, difficult. That bit of understanding

comes with the attendant realization that our world view fits

us in the moment, but when the mirrors move and the fog

lifts, our world view will be altered. The ability to hold the

knowledge of perceptory illusions provides us with the most

objectivity we can hope for.

So, when I look back to events earlier in the day or perhaps

yesterday, I wonder when the perceptive shift happened, and

what feelings I was ignoring in that moment? How can I

review and perhaps alter my view of an event to see the

nature of the illusion and see myself with more compassion?

The righteous edges of these mirrors and perceptions

provide us with the illusion that we are in control of what

we see around us. It allays our fear about the uncertainty of

life and we can pretend that we really do know what is going

to happen next. On the more positive side, that sense of

control helps us function in daily life and cushions the

comfort of our routines and habits. It can also provide such

a rigid edge to our perceptions that we are limited by them.

If I must be right, I lose the sensitivity and the consciousness

to explore the changing nature of reality and my world gets

progressively smaller.

There is a difference in feeling that we are in control

(the smoke and mirrors), and being centered in our own

power. When we perceive that someone has attacked,

ignored, or offended us, we not only feel out of control,

we have given our power over to the subjectivity of our

perceptions, rather than acknowledging their illusory nature.

During those times when our perceptions of who we are get

foggy, distorted and critical we are listening to inner voices

that are frightened about losing control as well. Learning that

those voices are all about maintaining old illusions brings us

to a place of compassion and center. When we stand centered

in the knowing that another’s perceptions are just as biased,

and just as valid as our own, we watch the smoke clear and

life gets easier.

was raised fascinated with books about King Arthur,

Knights of the Round Table, and fairytales. Those stories

captured my attention for many hours and made my

grandmother happy because I was quiet. In my early

teens, I discovered the Doubleday book club and every month

I waited in anticipation for the books to arrive, then read

them in two days spell bound by the adventures contained

on the pages. Then, there was the step into adulthood and

reality. I was responsible to see that the bills were paid, food

was on the table and the children taken care of –but I never

gave up fantasizing or dreaming– it took the mundane and

made it pleasant and often exciting.

Wishing, wanting, and needing set the tone for my life

search and longing to find the answer to “Why am I here?”

and “What is my purpose?” Each of those desires led me to

search until I could find an inkling of answers.

This story, written today began forty years ago when I

experienced my first meditation group led by a woman whose

voice was soft and melodic. She suggested visualizing a

perfect place and a perfect self, creating it in my mind and

whenever I chose I could be there just by wanting to.

That one session led to wanting to learn more about

transcendental meditation and peaceful fulfillment. In my

mind I created a lovely enchanted cottage at the edge of a

small village, colorful flower gardens, stone patio, resting

benches, and a bridge over a creek where family and friends

would come to visit and have a cup of coffee. Inside the cottage

I created big soft chairs and couches to sit on, a fireplace filled

one wall, bookshelves filled another wall and kitchen/dining

area were all open spaces. Meditation provided my thoughts

with peace, harmony and joy. When my waking moments were

full of noise, demands and chaos, I often would immediately

slip into that peaceful state of awareness for a moment or two.

As I grew older the “me” in my meditation took on the persona

of a wise, aged woman. And guess what happened naturally?

Year after year, job after job, the birth of children and my own

birthdays…here I am, living what once I only imagined,

because I was fascinated with visual meditation and had an

unquenchable thirst for knowledge that led to understanding

how an intimate relationship with God felt.

Now that I have the time to look back, I see how all the

choices I’ve ever made were like tiny pieces of a puzzle that fit

What Does It Feel Like To Get What You Want?By Annetta “Nettie” Morse

together. All the ups and downs, the desires some succeeded

and some did not, all had a part in making my life dreams

come true. I discovered that every experience means something

in the scheme of things unless I resisted the lessons found in

every choice I made. What appears negative, faulty, troubled

and wrong are only the opposite beliefs which are: positive

affirming, perfect functioning, blessings, and right for the

answers I seek. A good life, meaning I want to find a purpose

even if it is not clear or complete but knowing whatever my

life purpose is it is always in progress. I believe that seeking

the way to feel healthy, wealthy, wise, confident, beautiful,

loving and loved will attract to me that which I need to

experience, living a life feeling fulfilled.

I am astounded and amazed that the beginning of creating

a dream, a way to feel in a meditation workshop forty years

ago, became real. The thoughts created over the years were

just a background wash on an artist’s canvas ready for the

painting to appear with every brush stroke. There were times

when I would work very hard on an idea or a job because I

grew up in an era when that is what was taught. The concept

was no gain without pain, work hard for what you want, keep

your nose to the grind stone and your shoulder to the wheel,

know what you want and need, dare to ask for it, and hope

the best might appear. Now we are in a new era where honesty

and integrity are priority characteristics to be developed and

fine tuned. Ask and it is given is a theme to be believed now.

Learning to allow and understand that the contrasts in life

are there to make me know I should never give up wanting or

desiring and will spur me on to fulfillment. I believe life is

not about changing anyone but when I am in alignment with

Source everyone and everything everywhere benefit. When

I am focused on staying in alignment with the Creative

Source of All That, and I do that by how I feel, everyone and

everything is free to become what is right for them. I am

only in charge of how I feel. No one has to change or be

different in any way for me to be happy.

Pieces to my life puzzle went together in the last thirty

days almost without effort it seemed. I now live in an

enchanted four acre forest, in a beautiful apartment on the

lower level of my daughter and my son-in-law’s ranch home.

My space is all one level, one wall is a fireplace, soft chairs are

placed to enjoy the view, there is a patio for writing, being

peaceful, and quiet dreaming of more fantasies because as

long as I can think and dream, there are challenges, learning,

and much joy to be found.

How does it feel to get what you want? A roller coaster

ride, falling in love for the first or twelfth time, great sex,

having lots of friends and children who love you and every

day is a new and exciting day to LIVE. It is in the art of

allowing rockets of desire to be held in escrow until I am in

a vibrational alignment with what I am asking for, as Esther

Hicks says, as she channels the wisdom of Abraham. I am

living my dream. It feels awesome, fantabulous, amazing,

wondrous, exciting, and miraculous, beyond great. It can’t

get any better than this. And then it does, as I choose to

celebrate every moment of every day.

hile our sacred contracts provide our life

dramas each earthwalk, it is how we choose to

respond to these adventures that determines

how we will experience life. We can express love

and gratitude to the Universe for providing these powerful

opportunities for us to learn the lessons we choose to learn

or we can respond with fear and carry the illusion of being

victims for the terrible things that have been done to us.

As with everything on earth, it is a choice.

The same is true if our sacred contracts involve something

as deplorable by human standards as incest or some other

form of sexual trauma. In the spirit realm there is no judgment

of any kind. Everything is viewed from a place of love and the

Universe creates the illusion of these life dramas with no

emotional attachment. It is the human ego that attaches

judgment and shame to any experience because it derives the

illusion of power from this judgment. No act is either good or

bad, right or wrong in the spirit realm; it is only the judgments

our human egos create that make them so. We choose these

human lifetimes precisely so we can have the wide range of

emotions we would otherwise not know firsthand. Without

these emotions that accompany the human experience, we

would not be able to pierce the illusions the Universe creates

for us in order to learn the lessons we choose, such as self-love.

Humans are addicted to shame and the children who

experience sexual trauma feel compelled by shame to keep the

family secret of the violation. They derive the illusion of power

from the secret they hold and even arrogance from the mantle

of victimization they carry throughout life from this illusion.

If there is human trauma in a child’s life, he or she carries

the illusion of being a victim and remains at the emotional age

the trauma occurred, even though physically an adult. This is

also true of perpetrators who are, virtually always, wounded

children in adult clothing who continue to hold the illusion

and victim energy from their own sexual trauma. When the

child clings to the notion of being either victim or perpetrator,

he or she will never be functional in human terms until, as an

adult, he or she learns to re-parent the inner children who

carry this shame and victim energy. To transmute the energy of

the event and see it as the gift it is, rather than the violation ego

would have them believe it is. Unless they are able to do this,

these traumatized humans will continue to hold the illusion

both of being victims and of gaining power as a result.

The reality of the illusion, of course, is that there are no

victims, only volunteers. It is impossible to do anything

without the express knowledge and agreement of Creator.

On the spiritual level we understand that every experience

has value because it is provided with love by the Universe to

help us learn. There can be no victims because we are all

volunteers by virtue of our sacred contracts.

As long as we are in these human bodies, we will

experience all the pain, trauma and emotions inherent to

them. From the spiritual perspective, however, in order for

us to evolve, we must live the life of extremes to learn the

life of balance. We can never ascend to a level that is higher

proportionately than the depths to which we are willing to

descend. The more challenging the lesson, the greater the

opportunity we have for spiritual growth. Challenging

lessons will always be part of our human dramas; how we

choose to view them will determine our life experiences.

We can choose love and gratitude for our opportunity to

learn or fear and the illusion of being a victim. It reminds

me of an old Cherokee proverb.

A Native American grandfather was teaching his

grandson about life:

“I feel as if I have two wolves fighting in my heart,” the

chief said to the boy. “One wolf is evil—he is anger, envy,

sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment,

inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, self-doubt and ego.

The other wolf is good—he is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity,

humility kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth,

compassion, and faith.”

The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked

his grandfather, “Which wolf will win the fight in your heart?”

The old chief replied, “The one that I feed.”

As with everything in this earth experience, we have a

choice. We can choose love or fear. Neither choice is right or

wrong, but they will result in decidedly different experiences that

determine which path our journey on earth will follow. Which

wolf will you choose to feed? It is for each of us to decide.

Peace.

had been walking for probably just a few minutes along the OlentangyRiver, near King Avenue, when I beganto think I was missing something. Hehadn’t said a word. I know that he was

urging me to learn about silence, so maybe thatwas the idea; but my thoughts weren’t silent, theywere thinking about silence. So just as thinkingabout silence turned into thinking about thinkingabout silence, “Paul, tell me what this is.” He picked up a brittle, tiny leaf from the ground. The kind you see an ant running off with. “It’s a leaf,” I said. “And?”He handed it to me as though there was a little message on it for me to read. But there wasn’t.

“It’s beautiful, but it’s dead… and shriveled,”I said uncomfortably. I often wish he’d just tellme what he wants to say, instead of pulling itout of me with this Aristotelian syllogisticapproach.“Good, one out of three,” he said, taking it from me. “It’s beautiful, but it’snot a leaf, it’s a tree, and it’s very alive.”

We were walking again and hetossed it over his shoulder carelessly.

I just looked at him, and after a few seconds he continued. “Paul, are you alive?” “Yes.” More syllogisms. “If you walk into someone’s

bathroom, and see a hair on the floor, do you wait for it to leave so you can do your

business?” “No.” “Because it’s not alive is it? What about a toenail?” “No.”

“That leaf will only lie on the ground for a very, very short while. It’ll become the soil after a

few rains, Paul. If a bird tries to eat it, that bird will eventually pass our leaf so it can become the soil.

If the bird retains it, it will be part of the bird until the bird itself passes away and becomes soil. Once the

leaf becomes soil, it will soon be pulled into the invitingroots of a tree and, once again, it will climb to the sky.

The leaf is not afraid Paul, it knows it is a tree. It is not dead at all. It has been doing this dance for a million years, yet you walk past it and call it dead and wrinkly.”

“You can call hair dead, and a toenail dead, but really we are a bunch of “dead” things all stuck together – a skeleton of calcium, some water, and a bunch of goo –

all dead but in constant motion for the time being, not unlike a tree or a rock. Your skeleton is part of

your body and you need it. It is part of you and your life. Ifyou lose it you will die, but it is just calcium Paul, a rock. Allthese rocks and leaves are not dead, they are just small livingparts of one big body, and you are at an age now where you’reallowed to see and meet that large body. You see, the illusion isdeath and separation, Paul. Never call a rock dead; that is notaccurate. If someone cut your hair off, and then said “hey, calm down, it was dead,” you’d be upset. Respect creation, because while it appears to be many parts, it is one body.”

“Paul, I’m going to show you this in a language you caneasily understand.”

We slowed our pace, and walked off the trail a few stepsinto the grass, and then sat down in silence. I didn’t close myeyes, but it felt like he smacked me in the chest, and suddenly,I could see something I had never seen before. It was like anew image was laid over top of my normal vision. As I triedto figure out what I was seeing I began to distinguish a signature, a geometry, a field, around every blade of grasssurrounding me. This signature was beautiful, and seemed to explain each little blade’s legacy. It was like a glow. Theglow said so much, and when I saw both its simplicity andcomplexity, I had a profound respect for that blade of grass, for its long history and adventures, and even more so for itsprofound love for me. Each blade had this glow to it, anintelligent and quiet glow, moving in the wind.

“Paul, look at this tree.” Wow, it was the same thing, likeexactly the same thing in a weird way. The glow was identical. For the first time I realized that the tree was no different thanthe grass. They were like brothers, twin brothers. Closer thanbrothers, like a reflection. If I talked to one, the other onewould hear the same thing because they’re the same. But atfirst it was hard to understand, it was like meeting a blade of grass which said “Hi, I’m Norman Hollander Thompsonfrom Philadelphia,” and talking about his whole life all day, then meeting a tree an hour later that says “Hi, I’m Norman

Hollander Thompson from Philadelphia.” It was crazy but sotrue and evident. I was touched by how close they were. Thetree and the grass were the same thing, and so is that rock! It was awesome! Nature was alive! And I saw that it has suchan honorable and incredible story. Its story is bigger thananybody’s. Their story included outer space, and stars, andwhere we came from. The tree and the blades of grass bothcherished their histories, and had an identical agenda of loveright now. They were alive, and the same person.

He urged me up and towards the river. “Look straightahead, and sit down here on the very edge.” I did, but I was slowbecause I was realizing that the clouds were trees too. “Paul, I seewhat you’re thinking. The grass isn’t a tree.”“They’re the same,”I felt like I wanted to explain this to him, even though I knew heknew already. “Look, listen to the cloud,” I said, “it IS the tree!”“Paul, they’re different because one is here, and the cloud is upthere.”“No, they’re the same being, they’re both trees, or clouds, either way.”“Lean forward really far Paul.”

I leaned forward and for a moment time stopped. Therewas the kind of silence that only happens RIGHT beforelightning strikes. It’s like the sound was sucked out of the air.I leaned all the way forward and looked straight down. It hitme what might happen just before it did happen. But now Icould see the reflection of the top of my head in the water;and I had the same glow. I was a tree too. I craned my neckforward and started to cry as I looked at my eyes’ reflectionin the water. The rest of my vision was scattering in an emotional teary blur, but the vision that really mattered wasso clear. I was a tree and a cloud and a rock and all those little blades of grass. We’re the same person. “Paul, the cloudisn’t a tree. The cloud is you.” “The cloud is us,” I whispered.

In the wake of a series of life-threatening experiences ten years ago, including a serious car accident, Paul Berick found himself re-born andextremely sensitive to multiple planes of reality. An Ohio native, Paul hasbecome both the spiritual student and teacher, assisting his communitiesthrough the dawn of our present evolutionary transformation.

Death is an illusion.

Why do I choose to write about a subject that so many

people view with fear and nagging uncertainty? Maybe it’s

because I am ninety-one years young and throughout those

years I have experienced many little so-called deaths.

Some of those were deaths of ideas, misconceptions of

relationships, perhaps figments of my imagination which

had to give way for growth to take place, for healing to

emerge, for a phoenix to “rise from the ashes.”

How many different kinds of illusions has one experienced

in a lifetime? Sometimes they can be visual, fleeting, momentary.

I recall an experiment in psychology class of putting a straight

glass tube into a glass of water. The submerged portion

appeared to be bent and form an angle. My senses told me,

“That’s just an illusion,” which was easily corrected by

removing the tube. How many times have I experienced a

visual illusion when looking into the face of someone I’d

rather not confront? This illusion disappeared with a change

in my perception or feeling about that person.

Death is an illusion, it creates birth, a regeneration of

life, which is a never ending process. It can be viewed as

negative, an occurrence to be feared, a tragedy, or it can be

viewed as positive, an event which has promise, hope and

evolution. In one of his workshops, John McMullin stated that,

“Death and birth are necessary to move us from one realm to

another.” I believe that as a tiny babe is being divinely created,

essence from the spiritual world is transferred into that devel-

oping human being, endowing it with an eternal spiritual

energy. This is the spirit identity that returns to the “after-life”,

Heaven or the cosmos, where it once again can be incarnated.

This I do believe, not necessarily a premise readily accepted

by the majority.

Death is an illusion. The Bible states, “Dust thou art to

dust returneth was not spoken of the soul.” If my spirit (soul)

is not attached to earth, how can it die? Research about

“near-death” or “out-of- body” experiences of people who are

dying, or have been pronounced dead with no vital signs,

gives us reason to ponder the mysteries of “life after death.”

This I Do BelieveBy Lillian F. Bernhagen, R.N., M.A., HC

25

Some forty years ago an internationally prominent

psychiatrist, Dr. Elizabeth Kübler-Ross, after documenting

hundreds of her patients’ near-death experiences, shook up

the medical world by stating that, “I know beyond the shadow

of a doubt that there is life after death.” As recent as this

month, an article relating to life after death and near-death

experiences appeared in the September/October issue of a

much read magazine. Strikingly similar experiences were

reported by many, such as: floating out of their bodies,

hovering above the scene where they watched the rescue team

work resuscitation procedures, feeling as if having taken on a

“spiritual body”, having gone down a dark tunnel toward a

bright, white light, most said that they were not afraid to die,

knowing it would be a beautiful experience.

Death is an illusion. Is it an illusion to children? What is

their interpretation or acceptance of death? Their responses

can only reflect the limitations of their own experiences. Do

you recall the childhood game, played by dancing in a circle

and singing this ritualistic chant?

Ring around a Rosie,

A pocket full of posies,

Ashes to ashes, we all fall down.

This game, played for generations, had its origin in

Medieval Society during the relentless Bubonic plague, where

children were surrounded by constant death. It was a child’s

game of playing-at-death. It gave them a chance to predict or

participate in their own sudden death. However, the game

had one distinct advantage over death; the children could rise

from the fall to play again. Thus, it was a form of illusion for

the children that death did not have to be permanent.

Death is an illusion. How comforting it would be to all

grieving families and friends if they could believe that death is

not a permanent separation but a temporary good-bye; that

death can be positive and holds promise, hope and evolution;

that life is a never-ending journey and death is only a gate-

way on that journey, one from physical form to spiritual

form and back again, to reincarnate into physical form.

This well-known poem from an unknown author caries a

beautiful message and the reassurance that “death is an illusion.”

Do not stand at my grave and weep;

I am not there. I do not sleep.

I am a thousand winds that blow;

I am the diamond glint on snow.

I am the sunlight on ripened grain.

When you waken in the morning hush,

I am the swift uplifting rush

Of quiet birds in circled flight.

I am the soft star that shines at night.

Do not stand at my grave and cry.

I am not there; I did not die.

Death is an illusion. This I do believe.

“What do you see?’ the shaman asks the human. “I see small

balls of light swirling around,” answers the human. “As I

watch the lights, they form objects—the table I know is in

front of me, the walls, the chair I’m sitting on. Where there

are objects, the lights are denser than where there is just air,

and even some objects are more dense than others.”

The shaman says nothing, just continues to be present.

“Oh wow! I can even see my own body as a bunch of tiny

moving lights,” the human says. After a moment, the human

addresses the shaman directly, “I can feel you smile.”

Ever the wise observer, the shaman remains silent.

“I know scientists tell us that both air and matter are made

up of atoms—protons, neutrons, and electrons zipping

about. The zippier the atoms, the more solid the mass, but

to see this in action, to experience it is extraordinary.”

“So now you see that which seems real is not what it

seems,” the shaman says. For a moment the human thinks

in silence before speaking. “I get that intellectually, and now

even experientially, but I sure can’t put my hand through

the wall no matter how many times I tell myself that wall

is an illusion.

“Can’t you?” the shaman asked?

And there is the conundrum, two of the mes that live in

my inner world are walking through the outer world as one,

each at odds with what the other calls real. The inner shaman

repeatedly travels to other worlds, piercing every illusion the

other me holds as reality. But on days when I’m tired and my

body does not want to go the next step, when my dreams

feels illusive and unattainable, when I read or listen to the news,

when the bills feel higher than the income, when deadlines

loom and the outdoors calls, when the weather takes its toll

on our human existence, when children die, when a thousand

other realities of human life push themselves into my life,

I am fraught with questions of how I’ve ordered my life.

Am I caught in a reality that is nonexistent?

I think not. This all is real and so are the travels of the

shaman. When, through my imagination, I reach a place deep

within my mind and meet Black Panther and Red Tail Hawk.

In the great stone circle beneath tall trees of ancient times

we travel together for the gift of wisdom or the healing of

another being and I am in a world as real as the one I inhabit

every day. It is just a different world, a shift in perception that

allows me, like the window washer on the side of a high-rise

building, to see a little more than I see from the ground.

A shift, that’s all, simply a shift of perception, that takes

me a million miles from where I started. Red Tail Hawk

perches on my shoulder; Black Panther paws the air reaching

toward me. It is time to go. In this time of healing, we are

working with Paco, one of my big dogs that lost the use of his

weeks, but his will to live is strong. I ride on the back of Black

Panther; Red Tail Hawk flies first ahead, then overhead. We

move through a portal within the great stone circle, a dark

tunnel that leads to the brightly sunlit meadow. This is the

land on which I live. I recognize it, yet it is different, brighter,

more luminous, than when I see it through my normal eyes.

Then we are with Paco, moving along his spine, beneath

his skin and fur. We pass up into the brain, move electrons

and neurons about, change synapses, and rewire parts of his

brain. We do the same for the spinal cord. Later, from my

most human self, I massage the spine and move the muscles

of his legs to remind him of the brain impulses that must

reach past the injuries and send the signals that tell him to

stand, walk, move. It will take four months in all and the help

of a chiropractor veterinary, many other healers and friends,

and lots of energy work and prayers before he regains the use

of all four legs. Now, months later, he runs with ease.

A miracle, the vet says. Piercing the illusion, I say.

I have come to terms with the illusion of life, as I under-

stand it, and have reconciled the many worlds I inhabit that

live side-by-side within me, none of them an illusion and all

of them so. Paco’s healing is indeed miraculous and so is the

birth of a new flower. To see them as the same is looking

beyond the obvious and seeing the miracle of all moments,

finding the deeper meaning in even the most mundane.

I may not always understand the meaning of the reality

I currently inhabit at any given moment, but I can seek to

make the shift, to see beyond the veil of illusion into another

reality. Surely, the shift of our mindset alters our whole

world. Just as the shaman pierces the veils between the

worlds, we all pierce the veils of illusions from the most

mundane to the sublime. We can choose to see the cleaning

of our homes a chore, or make the shift, and see it as a sacred

time of clearing. We see the problem as unsolvable, or shift

and see it as a way to make a change. We see ourselves under

the mountain, smothering as we try to dig out, or shift and

see ourselves on top of the mountain, breathing freely.

The mountain remains, but our reality of it has changed.

In my book, 23 Days/A Celtic Journey, there is a refrain

throughout:

With each breath, the world changes and changes again,Yet it changes not at all.

Is this not what the illusion is and the piercing of the veil

gradations of different thought patterns, in the simplest

form, and shifting into other worlds or other dimensions, in

the more complex? As a person walking this earth, I still must

fill out IRS forms (or pay the consequences), put food into

my body, and spend part of my time sleeping. There are

those great masters who may have pierced the veil of illusion

and no longer need food or sleep. I am not one of them. I am

very much the human. And I am also the shaman who shifts

into worlds beyond my human self.

When we, the human, become lost in the mundane

world, the shaman within sits on our shoulder, silently

witnessing, reminding us we are more than what we now

perceive. Perhaps we do not have to put a hand through a

wall we see as solid; perhaps it is the invisible walls that are

the illusions we need to pierce.

“As you let go of what you think you know, your

perception shifts and you begin to recognize the veil between

worlds is only that, a veil that separates you— the human—

from all your other selves,” the shaman says.

And I, the human, feel the truth of this.

Creating Positive ChangeBy Nancy Addison, H.H.C., B.A.R.A.

ncient sages, seers, and our enlightened teachers

today believe there is no past, present or future and

therefore no such thing as linear time. If it’s true

that what we’ve been taught about time is merely

an illusion and we are in a constant state of

creating, then anything is possible. No matter what we believe

about time and space, we can begin living in the NOW. We can

become the creators of both our universe and our own lives

without being paralyzed from past regrets, and future worry or

anxiety. Thus, we allow infinite possibilities into our lives.

I believe that our minds are simply expanding events into our

consciousness. Can we recognize the magnitude of the change

in humankind that can occur within this new paradigm?

A man or woman has a vision or an imaginative thought

and that becomes reality. Cell phones, the microchip, fax

machines, traveling to the moon are all good examples.

Events or objects come into our awareness that were

previously unimaginable. On a more personal note, I have

even noticed that our desire for healthier organic food

choices has expanded, perhaps as a result of our mind’s

recognition of physical nutritional needs. We learn more every

day about the mind/body connection as it relates to our health,

nutrition requirements, disease prevention and our body’s

remarkable ability to self-heal. It appears that our world and

our bodies change to match our thoughts, creativity, imagi-

nation, and physical needs, proving once again that anything

is possible if our mind creates it.

How can this process be used to create something beneficial

for our global situation? Let’s simply begin by creating peace,

harmony and love in our personal lives, which will radiate into

our society, our environment and our universe. As a species,

our belief in separation from each other has created ill health,

environmental problems and human conflicts. However, it has

been said that the energy of positive consciousness and joyous

transformation is 1,000 times greater than that of negative

energy forces. So, I prefer to look at the positive, hopeful side,

knowing that throughout the world there is mass movement

toward the expansion of our awareness to who we really are as

spiritual beings. We are discovering our true nature.

I believe we have the ability to ascend to a higher

consciousness. We are all energy-based beings sharing our

energy with everything in the universe. And now, we have the

ability to reach critical mass. As awareness becomes global,

it assists us in making a quantum leap in our evolution.

I am hopeful that, as spiritual beings living in physical bodies,

we can properly handle the responsibility that comes with

knowledge of creation, wisdom and invention. I believe we

can create a world of peace, where there is no hunger, poverty,

oppression or destruction of our environment.

Let’s first begin by creating the positive changes in our

own lives. Each of us has the potential to make our own life

a telepathic communication network of positive energy

exchange. These conscious desires for peace and love will

ascend us all to a higher level and a more blissful life.28

Gandhi said it best when he said, “Be the change you wish

to see in the world.” It is the simplest and most profound

statement I’ve known to express our personal influence toward

global peace, prosperity, joy and love in the world. To assist

in this process, some positive affirmations are listed below.

Add your own thoughts as they come to you and add gratitude

statements as well. Keep them by your bedside and let them

be your last thoughts before sleep and your first thoughts when

you wake up. Continue to write more positive desires and

thoughts of gratitude as they come into your awareness.

My body’s rhythms are a symphony in perfect harmony with the conscious universe.

I am evolving into a higher being consciously connected to everything in existence.

There is meaning and purpose in everything I do and everything that happens.

I have a contribution to make to the world.

I have unique talents that I use to help and serve others.

All my relationships are meaningful and nurturing.

I do something nice each day to create a smile.

I set and achieve goals with renewed energy and excitement.

Everything I do or say in my life brings some benefit to the world.

I am centered and totally at peace.

I am eternal, living in this physical body to experience all the joys of life.

I live in the NOW with joy, peace, harmony, laughter and love.

Live in the NOW and live connected. Your life will begin its

own positive transformation as your joy and bliss radiate to

benefit the world. “Be the change you wish to see in the world.”

here are two illusions that have caused millions of Americans’ mental and physical health to suffer. The first illusion is “The less I eat, the more I will lose.”This weight-loss illusion has caused millions of

Americans to lose hope and lose health as a result of their “diet failure”. Why is it that starvation diets result in short-termweight-loss followed by long-term weight-gain?

The reason for this phenomenon is due to the way we are wired. The “Law of Scarcity” comes into play anytime our subconsciousbrain determines that food has become scarce. The definition offood scarcity is an amount of caloric intake which is less than ourresting metabolic rate, which is approximately 1500 calories perday. When we attempt to lose weight by starving ourselves, our“wiring” causes us to shift into a fat-storing metabolism by whichwe begin to break muscle down and use the protein as an alternativefuel source. In fact, losing weight quickly (more than two poundsper week) by restricting caloric intake will result in 70% fat lossand 30% muscle loss. Because one pound of muscle burns 350more calories per week than one pound of fat, the muscle masslost because of the starvation diet will dramatically reduce theamount of calories burned through our resting metabolic rate. This is why, when we return to normal eating patterns after the“diet”, it’s so easy to pack the lost weight back on plus more! Even though the calories ‘in’ part of the equation is reasonable, the calories ‘out’ has been reduced to the point where the calories‘in’ can easily exceed the calories ‘out’.

Starvation diets are extremely stressful to our body, causingcortisol levels to climb, resulting in a reduction of our all importantmuscle mass. Instead of focusing our weight-loss efforts onreducing the calories ‘in’, we should spend more time increasingthe calories ‘out’ part of the equation by exercising more andbuilding more muscle — so we can burn more calories when we are sound asleep!

The second illusion is that pain medication can make chronicpain go away. The truth is that all prescription, anti-inflammatory,and over the counter pain medication can have serious negativeside effects to the heart, cartilage, stomach lining, kidneys and liver. These expensive, drugs treat only the symptoms by disguising thepain—not the underlying cause of the chronic pain condition.

So, how do we overcome chronic pain without using drugs? Most chronic pain falls into two categories: congested muscletissue or joint pain. Both of these conditions can be addressedwith proper massage therapy followed by muscle balancing, aprocess whereby the therapist will assess which muscles havebeen repetitively shortened and which are too long. Restoringmuscle balance within our muscle groups can “decongest” themuscle tissue and take pressure off of the corresponding joint or area of discomfort.

Plantar fasciatus, for example, is a painful condition of theheel of the foot and can be reversed by balancing the muscles ofthe lower leg. Lengthening the soleus muscle (part of the calfmuscle group) will take pressure off of the muscle-attachmentsite at the calcaneus bone in our foot allowing for a decrease ininflammation thereby restoring normal blood circulation to thearea and bring much needed oxygen to the area of pain.

Other pain-reducing strategies include:• Eating plenty of Omega-3 rich fats and protein. Avocado, almonds,

flaxseed, olive oil, salmon, mackerel, and trout are all good choices.• We need to keep our endorphin levels high by consuming three

servings of quality protein each day. Free range eggs, turkey, fish, chicken and grass-fed beef will provide the tryptophan necessary to produce the endorphin we need to fight pain.Did you know that endorphin is considered 200 times morepowerful than morphine?

• Take your weigh, divide by 2, and drink that many ounces ofspring water per day. Our muscles are 80% water and needproper hydration.

• Get 7-8 hours of sleep per night. Only in the deep portion of sleepdo we get a release of the valuable pain-fighter, human growthhormone (HGH). HGH finds its way to all of our soft tissues andrepairs the tiny tears in our muscles so they will not grow into apainful condition. The best way to insure a good night’s sleep is by getting an hour of outdoor physical activity each day!

• Forgive and strive to keep emotions and responses to stresspositive. Our emotions and responses are either positive or negative. And, we create either a positive or negative chemistryin our body. Chronic pain thrives in a negative chemistry, so get positive and stay there!

Q: WHAT IS A PERSONAL TRAINER?

A: A Personal Trainer teaches clients the tools to lead an active, healthier lifestyle. Personal

Trainers create specific exercise programs to fit the client’s goals and needs, whether it

is rehabilitation, maintenance, or sports specific. A Personal Trainer also discusses

motivational roadblocks that may interfere with the actualization of those goals.

A Personal Trainer is not a counselor and does not tell you how to live your life, but rather

helps you reach your goals to enhance your fitness level. A Trainer is not responsible for

you reaching your goals, but rather, is part of your team and contributes their time and

expertise to bring a desired goal to fruition. As a consultant, the trainer is in service to you

and your established fitness goals.

Q: WHAT ARE THE LONG AND SHORT TERM REASONS TO USE A PERSONAL TRAINER?

A: First, a long term reason to engage a Personal Trainer is to help you stay accountable to

your fitness goals. Short term reasons to hire a Trainer include shaping up for an event,

or to train for a specific physical endeavor.

Q: WHAT DOES IT COST TO USE A PERSONAL TRAINER?

A: Typically the price of a Personal Trainer can range from $50 to $150/hr. However, if you do not

mind training in a small group there are options that are half the cost and just as effective.

Q: WHAT SHOULD A CLIENT EXPECT FROM THEIR PERSONAL TRAINER?

A: Expect a relationship based on support and education. Don’t ask or expect a Trainer to

nag or criticize any lack of motivation. If a Trainer and a client get into a parent-child

relationship, it can never be a successful working partnership. A trainer can provide the

information and knowledge to empower the client to empower themselves.

Q: WHAT OTHER TOOLS CAN A PERSONAL TRAINER TEACH YOU?

A: A Personal Trainer can teach the client a skill set that can lead to overall wellness.

Overall wellness includes more than physical fitness, but also, nutrition, rest and natural

healing to just name a few. Although a Trainer is not licensed to diagnose or prescribe,

they do provide physical assessments and they can be a great resource

for a referral to another healthcare professional as needed.

Q: CAN A PERSONAL TRAINER TEACH SOMEONE HOW TOTRAIN THEMSELVES?

A: Absolutely. A Personal Trainer can design a program for a client

that doesn’t require supervision. In addition to physical conditioning,

personal trainers offer other components of a healthy lifestyle. The

key is to seek a Trainer with whom you feel safe and valued so you

can communicate openly and make choices that fit your lifestyle.

Q: IS THERE SUCH A THING AS A QUICK-FIX TO WEIGHT LOSS AND FITNESS?

A: No, the Media would love to keep this illusion alive, because it sells products. A

sustainable, gradual, active, weight loss program which encourages proper nutrition

and rest will not threaten the body’s metabolism and has been proven to lead to long

lasting results. This typically includes how we eat and appropriate exercise.

Q: CAN THERE BE A BENEFIT TO BLENDING LIFE COACHING AND PERSONAL TRAINING?

A: Yes. Actually this concept is gaining popularity and momentum worldwide. Approaching fitness with consideration of the

whole being — body , mind, and spirit — can lead to a better overall quality of life. The physical aspect is just one of the facets

to leading a fulfilling life.

Q: WHAT ARE SOME CREDENTIALS TO LOOK FOR WHEN DECIDING ON HIRING A PERSONAL TRAINER?

A: It is wise to seek a Trainer with a nationally recognized certification, a degree in exercise

physiology, and plenty of experience. Education and certification equip the Trainer with

an arsenal of insights and techniques to develop appropriate, safe programs for clients

with a variety of needs and desires. Examples of certification include the American

Council of Exercise (ACE) or National Association of Sports Medicine (NASM)

Q: DOES A TRAINER’S GENDER MAKE A DIFFERENCE?

A: Yes and no. For some clients gender does make a difference in personal comfort. A person’s

current level of fitness and weight are often the reason they seek a trainer. Age and experience

are other considerations. The important consideration is for the work to be effective, the

client must be comfortable and feel a rapport with the trainer who has been chosen.

Q: IS IT EVER TOO LATE TO TRANSFORM THE BODY?

A: It is never too late. A person’s thoughts, words, and deeds are capable of producing

modern day miracles.

ancer patients, in my opinion, can often combine

Complementary medicine with Allopathic medicine,

piercing the illusion that these two approaches

to restoring health are separate. One Allopathic

recommendation has been to avoid food supplements,

antioxidant supplements, and antioxidant-rich foods during chemotherapy

and radiation while Complementary Medicine often includes these

modalities. There is research to support the combined approach.

An article in Alternative Therapies (Simone II, Charles, et al,

“Antioxidants and other nutrients do not interfere with chemotherapy

or radiation therapy and can increase kill and increase survival,”

Jan/Feb 2007 vol. 13, no.1: 22-28) examined the published scientific

literature on this topic. Researchers searched the Medline and

Cancerlit databases from 1965 through 2003, and looked at studies

reporting the use of antioxidants during chemotherapy and radiation.

There were 280 peer-reviewed articles, 50 of which involved human

clinical randomized or observational trials. A total of 8521 patients

participated in these trials, and took various antioxidants either

alone or in combination.

The authors concluded that antioxidants and other nutrients

do not interfere with chemotherapy and radiation treatment. The

use of these nutrients does, however, increase the efficacy of chemotherapy

and radiation while reducing the side effects and protecting normal

tissue. In 15 of the studies examined, 3738 patients who took non-

prescription antioxidants and other nutrients had increased survival.

The researchers reported various ways in which the myth of

antioxidants interfering with cancer treatment have been perpetuated,

including an article that appeared on the front page of the New York

Times on October 26, 1997. Larry Norton, MD, of Memorial Sloan

Kettering Hospital was quoted as saying, “Researchers at (Memorial)

showed that large doses of Vitamin C could blunt the beneficial effects

of chemotherapy for breast cancer…It is also known that folic acid

can negate the effects of methotrexate, a drug used to treat cancer.”

Two years later the research Norton referred to was finally

published. First, the research involved mice, not humans, and we know

that animal models are not always reliable in terms of predicting

responses in humans. The author of the study in fact stated, “It’s

possible (emphasis added) that taking large doses of vitamin C

could interfere with the effects of chemotherapy and even radiation

in humans.” So, a single statement based on a study involving mice,

in which even the author would not make a definitive conclusion,

was the apparent source of the American Cancer Society’s position.

There are several issues here. I have written and spoken many

times about the tendency of protocols to become standard operating

procedure without scientific evidence to support them. Hysterectomy,

oophorectomy, episiotomy, drug combinations for heart disease that

are destructive, and the advice to refrain from all sun exposure are

just a few of the things we know are not generally useful, and in

many instances, harmful. Yet, a significant percentage of medical

practitioners still recommend these options. The sources quoted in

this article reinforce the necessity of patients getting information from

a variety of sources, and questioning everything they are told to do

in order to make the best decisions about their treatment and care.

ORDERS OF LOVE / MOVEMENTS OF THE SOUL:– ANDY STUCK, PH.D., L.I.S.W.A Family Systems Approach to Freedom

While traditional therapy often centers on the individual, Orders of Love concentrates on the family system, offering unique insight into the ties that bind us to others. Orders of Love is not about pathology or diagnosis, rather, it is about the honor, respect and love that promote freedom from suffering.

Love flows among relationships: from parent to child, between partners and among family members.Ignoring those orders brings about consequences that inhibit our ability to be successful in other realms of our lives, like relationships and careers.

Orders of Love works for people who feel burdened by personal issues that prevent their happiness andimpede their growth and success. It can address various aspects of life, including interpersonal relationships, death, divorce, adoption, incest, rape, murder, illness and addiction, as well as organizational dilemmas.

BENEVOLENCE CAFEA QUIET RETREAT in the city offering: food that nourishes the body, company that nurtures the heart, conversation that stimulates the mind and an intangible essence that feeds the soul.

COOKING WITH A CONSCIENCE. Ethics in life is everything. It is a great understatement to say that trying torun an ethically green cafe in the middle of a city in the twenty-first century is a challenge. It is expensive andlabor intensive, but we do it.We shun anything that is ready made.We buy our vegetables as fresh as we can,use organic when available, and prepare dishes from scratch. It’s our way of putting love into our food.
