The restraints placed on them by the State legislature have forced them to get rather creative. Parents and the hotel/motel industry fought against the compression of summer vacation season down to about eight weeks with even less than that for educators and support staff. It’s back now, a “full on” summer from the beginning of June to the end of August. Not quite the Memorial Day to Labor Day summer of days gone by, but close. In conversation with folks who were involved in making this decision, they were taken by surprise at the amount of passion that parents invested in this issue. Education leaders were dismayed over the fact that they have not been nearly as successful at getting parents to get that passionate about school attendance, academic per- formance and classroom behavior. Public education has become a mirror for all that has gone wrong – not in our schools but in our families. When summer vacation takes front seat to academics, behavior and general respect for property, people, and authority, we have indeed reached a sad place. I do not blame the teacher, the classroom, the school, the principle, the School Board, the Superintendent or even the students for the state of things. Education and behavior are a parent’s responsibility. At best, teachers, adminis- trators and school systems are a parent’s partner, tools that parents use to shape the lives and futures of their children and ultimately the world. Faith is like that too. We are fortunate to have a number of adults who work constantly to help shape the faith of our chil- dren and youth. This summer there will be several children’s ministry events like our trip to Dan Nicolas Park on June 21 and Vacation Bible School with Archdale Friends Meeting in July. Our Youth will be traveling to Gulfport MS to assist in the ongoing efforts to recover from hurricane Katrina on June 25 and in August they will travel to Caswell Beach Retreat Center with about 1200 youth from across our annual conference to participate in SPIRITUS. Sunday School will of course continue throughout the summer with some exciting new twists for our children’s department. But none of this will help any of our children unless they come. Just as educators share a high level of concern over misplaced priorities, pastors and church staff agonize too. You see ministries with children and youth have become one more option in an over-programmed hectic family schedule. Likewise, staffing these events has become increasingly difficult as these ministries take second place to other opportunities and demands. At some point parents and their children will end up at the church. It is always better for that to happen on the front end. Our concern is more than saving summer; it is about saving souls, making disciples for Jesus Christ. The longer it takes for our children and youth to find their way to faith in God the better chance there is that when they or their parents end up in church it will be the direct result of crisis in their lives as a result of bad decisions and choices that have been made with no faith foundation. Won’t you help us help our children? A firm life foundation begins with a relationship with Christ. The foundation of that relationship is a four-fold commitment to prayers, presence, gifts and service in the life of the congrega- tion. It is never too early to start, it is never to late to begin. 2006 2006 2006 2006

Saving Summer

Our local school systems have had a rather challenging time coming up with a school calendar that works.

Education leaders were dismayed over the fact that they have not been nearly as successful at getting parents to get that passionate about school attendance, academic per-formance and classroom behavior.

At best, teachers, adminis-trators and school systems are a parent’s partner, tools that parents use to shape the lives and futures of their children and ultimately the world.

Faith is like that too.

We are fortunate to have a number of adults who work constantly to help shape the faith of our chil-dren and youth. This summer there will be several children’s ministry events like our trip to Dan Nicolas Park on June 21 and Vacation Bible School with Archdale Friends Meeting in July.

Youth Ministry Trip Update

“I will praise you in the storm and I will lift my hands because you are who you are, no matter where I am and every tear I’ve cried you hold in your hand. You never left my side and though my heart is torn I will praise you in the storm…” These words are the words of Casting Crowns; a contemporary Christian band. This song was written not long after hurricane Katrina and speaks of the hope that came from the people of the Gulf region after the devastation. As you receive this newsletter we will be preparing June 25th to leave for Gulfport, MS to continue to offer hope and rebuilding. We go to represent Christ! We go to be witness from our congregation! We cannot say, thank you enough to all the individuals and groups that have made this mission possible! Our sign in the education entry way said “Help us raise the roof of those in need.” You did beyond measure! Our total raised has been $7,811.34! We will be staying in Ocean Springs, Mississippi at a “tent city” at St. Paul United Methodist. Each day we will travel into Gulfport to work on roofs in a neighborhood community as well as paint and repair. Upon our return, we will have a meal for all of our stockholders, and share our pictures and stories. We will also share our information during worship. We commission our team on June 18th. Once again, I lift the following before you to pray for: Megan & Steve Cates, Al & Ann Henderson, Lina Clausel, Brenda, Richard, and Russell Eurillo, Tyler Crist, Norman & Seth Askew, Andrew Hanes, Andrew & Libby McGavic, Carol Burns, Jessica Swanner, Lori Hankins, Leah Haithcock, Zach Thompson, Scott Wood, Paul Leonard, Britt Murdock, and Pat McKim. Dear Archdale UMC:

Thank you for your contribution to the Chaplaincy/Pastoral Care Program at HP Regional for $100.00. The program continues to grow in providing many forms of ministry to patients and families. Your support is a highly valued part of the total ministry provided by congregations in the area. The pastoral care committee will continue to make the services of the program a vital part of the total health care offered by High Point Regional Heath System. Thank you very much! Sincerely, Meredith Eanes Vice President

Letter from Open Door Ministry

May 8, 2006

Dear Archdale UMC: Thank you for your generous financial support of $750 to Open Door Ministries during the months of January-April. Your partnership is very important to us! We had the opportunity to help a family this month with a single mother and four children. They were facing eviction from their home due to financial difficulties. The mother has had some very serious medical problems, including cancer, and a stroke. Jesus teaches us to help those who cannot pro-vide for themselves. Our ministry is one way that we can offer the love of Christ to people who are in des-perate situations. Thank you for your support of Open Door Ministries! God Bless, Steve Key Director
