During times like we are currently experiencing; it is important to safely keep

an eye out for those in your immediate community who may need assistance.

Our letterboxes provide a non-contact channel to communicate. A note in a

letterbox with your contact number and offer to assist may provide comfort

to someone who does not have a local support network.

In this edition of the Whitby Newsletter we feature local events programs

and other activities that are currently suspended or postponed. Please

keep up to date via relevant websites to ensure you have the most current

information available.

The Serpentine Jarrahdale community is full of active community participants. These people are interested in their

local environment, support local businesses and volunteer their time

to see shared facilities and activities become available to everyone. One

of the latest examples of this is the reinvigoration of the Serpentine

Jarrahdale Community Resource Centre (CRC) on Paterson Road. The

CRC had been closed for some time, but thanks to local volunteers and

Shire support, this wonderful community facility is now up and running

again. There is more information featured in this newsletter.

In this edition, we also feature the Bush Fire Ready group for Serpentine

Jarrahdale. Again – staffed by volunteers, this organisation is established

to provide information and services to their local community members

on how to be bush fire ready. Do you and your family have a plan in place

in the case of a bushfire? These are the people who can help you quickly

and easily put a workable plan in place.

Court Grammar SchoolLocated on the corner of

Bishop and Soldiers Road in

Mundijong, Court Grammar

School is a coeducational

independent school in the

Anglican tradition whose

Mission is to ‘empower

each child for their lifelong

learning journey’. The school

community is made up of

students from Pre-Kindergarten

right up to Year 12.

CGS work hard to foster a strong community spirit with staff, students,

parents and the wider community. It is important to the CGS team that

their students are encouraged to grow in all aspects of their lives while

maintaining a considered and robust focus on the core learning areas.

The team at CGS offer many amazing opportunities for their students

which they otherwise may not get to experience. ‘School on the Road’

sees students provided with the opportunity to travel to locations such as

Ningaloo, Canberra and Melbourne and of course they take advantage of

the local spots with regular school camps.

If you would like to know more about Court Grammar School, the team

welcome you to make contact.

Scholarship opportunities are available in several areas, and we offer sibling

discounts to families with more than one child enrolled at the School.

The Serpentine Jarrahdale Bushfire Ready Group has a team

of Facilitators who are members of Bushfire Brigades located

in the Serpentine Jarrahdale Shire. They have the training and

experience to assist members of the community to make a plan

for their families for Bushfire Season.

These Facilitators are supported by The Department of Fire and

Emergency Services and The S J Shire.

A Bushfire Ready Group is formed by residents of an area

who, with assistance from the Facilitators, make a plan for the

Bushfire Season. This could be as simple as maintaining and

sharing a contact list with each other or having meetings to form

strategies to deal with Bushfires.

If you would like to know more and speak to one of the team,

contact details for Meg Cooper the Facilitator Coordinator, are

noted below.

What is the Purpose of the CRC?The SJ Community Resource Centre has been created to service the needs of community, it’s groups and to provide an access point for many government information services.

What services are available? We can provide several different spaces in which community groups can have functions and meetings. We also plan to develop a list of activities for many different age groups and have an entire computer room with up to 12 computers available at once.

Furthermore, in the Events and functions area of our services, we are able to hire out equipment like gazebos, chairs, display boards, crockery and silverware and even a performance stage!

The Centre offers access to professional office services like printing, laminating (up to A3 size) and binding of booklets. People are able to access computers and WIFI and use our video conferencing facilities. And if you need lunch provided for your team, we can even do small catering events in house!

We also sell SJ Number plates for cars, firewood permits (starting in May), Australind tickets and WA National Park Passes.

What’s coming up in the way of events?During March we will be having workshops for “Small Business Bookkeeping Essentials”.

We’ll also be running an educational event about how community groups can fundraise via the Container Deposit Legislation that will begin July.

Food Handling and Safety courses, a car boot sale, and soon, a series of health-related topics starting with “Healing With Food” and progressing on to a wide range of personal health management tips and practices.

Are there any volunteer opportunities?Absolutely! As the SJ Community Resource Centre is primarily volunteer centred, we will always be on the lookout for volunteer skills that can benefit others and their groups. You bring a skill and we will figure out how to put it to good use for the benefit of many.

What days and times is the CRC open?We are currently open Mon to Fri 9.30am to 2.30pm for all office related activities but activities and events will be happening on any and all days and times. Sign up to the Facebook page and keep an eye out for our soon to be published newsletter.

How can people get in contact with the CRC team?Drop in and see us – we love visitors! We’re at 2 Paterson Street, Mundijong right
