Dear Whiteoaks Families,
This year's grade 2/3 musical "Assignment Earth" was a great success and en-
joyed immensely by our Whiteoaks students, families and staff. The valuable lessons
we learned from our students about preserving our planet, presented to us in song
was a wonderful way to be reminded to care for our environment. Our students per-
formed very well, and it was obvious they had fun! We are proud of the great job
they did. Thank-you to our Whiteoaks families for your support. We thank all our par-
ents for everything you do every day to support your child's experience at school
and to support them for their participation in the musical. And a big thank-you to
our volunteers for their help with backdrops, t-shirts and props. Special mention goes
out to Alexa Barkley, Lindsay Caringi, Maybeth Goedegebuure, Polly Kandola,
Meera Aravind Kumar, Joanne McGroarty, Stanislava Neagu, Stephanie Newhouse,
Sarah Ryan, Dinah Wilson and Molly Zhai. We couldn't have done it without you!
Thank-you to our grade 2/3 staff for giving of your time to make this musical a suc-
cess. And a special thank-you to Mme Curic and Ms. Noyek, for the long hours they
put in preparing our students for this musical; and to Mme Gregory and Mme Cum-
mings for their help with sound. Working together, our Learning Community does
great things for kids.
Our amazing Fun Fair is fast approaching. Proceeds from the Fun Fair are used to
bring several enrichment activities to Whiteoaks each year that help create special
and memorable experiences for our students. Our School Council Fun Fair commit-
tee is working very hard to ensure the success of this year's event. Each year it is a
wonderful time where our community comes together to support our school and to
enjoy the company of others in our community. You would have received an email
update from our School Council earlier this week asking for your support for dona-
tions to help make this year's Fun Fair a success. Volunteers are still needed. Any
help you can give is greatly appreciated. I would ask you to review the Fun Fair flyer
in this newsletter requesting help from our Whiteoaks families. Thank-you in advance
for your support.
Just another reminder to the families of our grade 3 students: EQAO testing for all
our Grade 3 students will occur on May 31st, June 1st and June 2nd this year. We ask
that you ensure that your child is in attendance during this time. We would ask that
you do not book any appointments for your child during the testing period in order
to ensure his/her consistent participation. Thank-you in advance for your support.
Yours in education,
G. Lorentz

Celebrating Faith and Culture
At Whiteoaks, we continue to work to be an inclusive school. To honour the fact that at Whiteoaks our student
body represents many cultures and faiths, we celebrate the faith and cultures at Whiteoaks regularly as they
occur, by reading messages about cultural celebrations over the announcements. In addition, we insert a chart
in each week’s newsletter indicating Days of Celebration, their dates and the Faiths and Cultures that observe
them. We have included the chart of celebrations for the upcoming weeks in this newsletter.

Bus Rider and Bus Stop Safety Reminders
At this time we would like to take a moment to remind our Whiteoaks students and
their families about a few items related to safety while students are on the bus and
while waiting for the bus at their bus stop.
The following are key points from the STOPR Polices and Procedures:
STOPR004: Responsibilities of Students
Students who are granted the privilege of travelling to and from school by school
bus must behave in a safe and appropriate manner while they are aboard the vehi-
cle. Those who behave in an unsafe or inappropriate manner will lose this privilege, in
accordance with the Progressive Discipline Procedures (STOPR017).
Students are accountable to the school principal for their behaviour while on the
school bus and must obey the instructions of the bus driver.
Students must:
be at the bus stop no later than five to ten minutes before the scheduled arrival
time of the bus, which will not wait for latecomers;
always keep a safe distance from the road or the street while waiting for the bus;
respect other people’s property and belongings while waiting for the school bus;
wait for the bus to come to a complete stop before moving forward to board the
bus; and
While on the bus, students must:
remain seated at all times, facing forward, with their back against the back seat
cushion and their legs facing toward the front of the bus;
for their safety during the trip, avoid distracting or speaking to the bus driver, ex-
cept in the case of an emergency;
refrain from speaking loudly, being noisy, fighting, swearing or using abusive lan-
guage; refrain from getting into fights, annoying, hitting or biting other students on
the bus or the bus driver;
refrain from eating, drinking, spitting, or dirtying the inside of the bus;
refrain from throwing objects inside or outside the vehicle;
keep their hands, legs and head inside the bus;
keep their books, school bags and any other objects on their lap and keep the
aisle clear;
only board the bus to which he/she has been assigned, and embark or disembark
only at their own bus stop;
After getting off the school bus, students must:
if required to cross the road, immediately move five (5) to eight (8) paces away
from the front of the vehicle and wait for the bus driver’s signal before crossing the
street; and always watch for traffic before crossing the street.

Bus Rider and Bus Stop Safety Reminders
At times it becomes necessary to follow-up with students and their families when
expectations around bus and bus stop safety are expressed by bus drivers, parents
and community members.
An additional excerpt from the STOPR Policies and Procedures states:
As stated in the Ontario Schools Code of Conduct, the time spent travelling by
school bus is an extension of the school day. The school principal is therefore author-
ized and expected to consider discipline which would be appropriate if the infraction
had taken place at school up to and including suspension from school. This discipline
would be in addition to those specifically related to transportation e.g., Suspension of
bus privileges. In determining the appropriate discipline it is important to recognize
that infractions on a moving vehicle can have significant impact on student safety
and may warrant more severe discipline than if the same infraction took place on
school property. Note that students committing these infractions may be required to
provide compensation for any property damage.
Additionally, when concerns arise from property owners regarding bus stop loca-
tion or property damage caused by students waiting near properties, the property
owner may contact STOPR to request a change in bus stop. A change in bus stop
could pose an inconvenience to students and their families.

Thank you for your support in this important safety matter.

Importance of Hydration
Gulp! The Benefits of Hydration Hydration is a term used to describe your body's ability to manage water. This means water management at every level down to the individual cells. Correct hy-dration is dependant on cellular uptake of water, not simply whole body intake of water.
SMALL SIPS: The best way to hydrate your body cells, is to sip small amounts of wa-ter throughout the day. I like the analogy of hydrating our cells is like wetting a sponge: adding small drops of water using an eyedropper onto a sponge might take longer, but it gets more water into the sponge than if you empty a 2-liter jug of water over the sponge all at once. Staying hydrated helps:
Digestion and bowel function
Skin from drying out and wrinkling
Lubricates joints
Maintain good blood pressure and heart function
Muscles and brain from getting tired and fatigued
GO HAVE A DRINK A WATER…..SIP IT…..REPEAT!
Water Month
Drink more water!
Add fun flavours the natural way by adding a few slices of these to your water bottle Lemon Limes Cucumber Raspberries Blueberries Watermelon Orange Melon Peach Cinnamon stick Fresh mint Fresh basil Lemongrass Cayenne pepper Vanilla bean Mix ‘n match to create your fa-vourite flavor!
