This is a crucial question that faces us, both as individuals and as a church. Why did God create another world of intelligent beings after having created the angels and the other worlds? Were we made for a special purpose which none of the other intelligences could fill? Isaiah 43:7 & 21 tells us, “I have created him for my glory, I have formed him; yea, I have made him. . . This people have I formed for myself; they shall show forth my praise.” However, we know that the loyal angels and the inhabitants of the other worlds also give praise and glory to God continually. So there must be a deeper reason why we were created. We get another clue from ST April 22/03. “We were brought into existence because we were needed. How sad the thought that if we stand on the wrong side, in the ranks of the enemy, we are lost to the design of our creation.” This statement suggests that we were created and designed to fill a special need. But what was that need which necessitated the creation of another order of beings? We get another clue from the timing when this world was created. The creation of mankind was connected to what had happened in heaven. It tells us that as soon as Lucifer and his angels were cast out of heaven, “The Father consulted His Son in regard to at once carrying out their purpose to make man to inhabit the earth. He would place man upon probation to test his loyalty before he could be rendered eternally secure. If he endured the test wherewith God saw fit to prove him, he should eventually be equal with the angels,” SR p. 19. [email protected] Lucifer, who had occupied the highest position in heaven next to Christ, carried a lot of influence in the whole universe. To disprove his falsehoods was a very difficult matter. Yet God had a plan that would forever settle the doubts raised regarding the goodness of His law. He created a new order of beings through whom He would show that obedience to His law was not restrictive, that it doesn’t prevent intelligent beings from attaining to a higher sphere of existence. “After God had made every provision for the happiness of man, and had supplied his every want, he tested Adam’s loyalty. If the holy pair should be obedient, the race would after a time be made equal to the angels,” RH, Feb.24, 1874. We are told that man was created a little lower than the angels. Yet we are also told that he was created with such a built-in capacity that through obedience, he would become elevated to the sphere of an angel. We are told that “It was God’s purpose to repopulate heaven with the human family, if they would show themselves obedient to His every word,” GAG p. 344. The capacity to become elevated to a higher sphere was unique to the human race. We do not read of angels who have been loyal and true, becoming elevated to a higher sphere than an angel. Nor do we read of the unfallen beings of other worlds becoming elevated to the sphere of an angel. Why did God create man that way? If mankind would cooperate with their Creator in executing His plans, their experience would prove the falsity of Lucifer’s allegations that obedience to the law brings slavery and restricts the possibility of elevation of existence. Had things worked out as God had planned, the great controversy would have ended long ago. The allegations against God’s law would have been nullified by a whole order of intelligent beings who would demonstrate in their elevated existence that God’s law is not restrictive. Lucifer would have been so completely exposed in his diabolical schemes that the last link of sympathy between him and the loyal universe would be forever broken. And in mercy to the rebels, God would end their existence, the continuance of which would only bring them increasing misery. Who are we and why are we here? But we know the sad history of what happened on planet earth. Because of man’s terrible failure, the great controversy has had to go on for much longer than God intended. Yet God has promised the universe that “Affliction shall not rise up the second time,” Nahum 1:9. And He is still depending on the human race to cooperate with Him in executing His plan to secure the universe against another defection. God’s original purpose involving the human race has not changed. But it has become infinitely more difficult to do that with fallen, sinful beings than with unfallen beings. However, the final demonstration will be even more convincing. The glorious achievement which God purposed to accomplish through His loyal followers has not yet been accomplished. But it will be accomplished when the 7th trumpet begins to sound and the mystery of God is finished. See Revelation 10:7. The most holy place of the heavenly temple was then opened (Rev.11:15-19) where Christ has gone since 1844 to accomplish His final work to finish the mystery of God in the lives of His remnant people. But how will all these things be accomplished? And how will all the questions and doubts raised by Lucifer be fully answered? This is a crucial question that faces us, both as individuals and as a church. Why did God create another world of intelligent beings

after having created the angels and the other worlds?

Lucifer, who had occupied the highest position in heaven next to Christ, carried a lot of influence in the whole universe.

Lucifer would have been so completely exposed in his diabolical schemes that the last link of sympathy between him

and the loyal universe would be forever broken. And in mercy to the rebels, God would end their existence,

the continuance of which would only bring them increasing misery.

Who are we and why are

we here?

But it will be accomplished when the 7th trumpet begins to sound and the

mystery of God is finished.

You are invited to email your request for a 140 page booklet entitled “THE SANCTUARY, THE ATONEMENT AND THE FIT MAN.” This will give the answers as to how Christ will fulfill His ultimate purpose to make the universe secure from another defection. However, did Lucifer know before his expulsion about God’s purpose in the creation of another order

of intelligent beings who would be “a counterpart of God” and capable

of “cooperating with his Creator and executing His plans?” SD p. 8, MH p. 415. Did he know that human beings, if obedient, would eventually be “made equal to the angels” and take his place and the place of his angels that fell? See PK p. 589. Lucifer probably had some premonition of what God intended to accomplish through human beings that would impact his plans to become the highest ruler in the universe.

While he was still in heaven, and before his defection had come out openly, we are told that in the heavenly counsels, Lucifer opposed the creation of man. From Ms 38, 1890 we read, “He (Lucifer) hates mankind because they are the workmanship of God. He opposed the creation of man.” And later, after his objections were overruled, he “prepared his request that he should be made prince to govern the world then in prospect. This was not accorded to him,” Ms 43b, 1891.

Lucifer must have known something about the reason for the creation of this new order of intelligent beings, that it had to do with the vindication of God and His government. Any government which experiences the defection of its highest minister of state along with one third of its citizens will suffer a credibility problem.

The allegations which Lucifer and his angels raised against the government of heaven have reverberated throughout out the entire universe and have raised

many serious questions and doubts in the minds of unfallen worlds. And that was according to Lucifer’s well thought out plans. “God’s government included not

only the inhabitants of heaven, but of all the worlds that He had created; and Satan thought that if he could carry the angels of heaven with him in rebellion, he could carry also the other

worlds,” GC p. 497.

In order to understand why God needed a new order of beings we need to understand how Lucifer operated in heaven in His attempt to unseat Christ from His throne and take His place. At the beginning of the great controversy in heaven, Lucifer began his campaign against God by raising some doubts and questions regarding the laws that governed heavenly beings. Patriarchs and Prophets p. 37 tells us that “He began to insinuate doubts concerning the laws that governed heavenly beings, intimating that though laws might be necessary for the inhabitants of the worlds, angels, being more exalted, needed no such restraint, for their own wisdom was a sufficient guide. They were not beings that could bring dishonor to God; all their thoughts were holy; it was no more possible for them than for God Himself to err.”

“He denounced the divine statutes as a restriction of their liberty and declared that it was his purpose to secure the abolition of law; that, freed from this restraint, the hosts of heaven might enter upon a more exalted, more glorious state of existence,” GC p. 499.

Lucifer didn’t want to be just the highest of the angels; he wanted to “be like the most high,” Isaiah 14:14. And he claimed that it was the laws that governed heaven which were preventing him and the angels to rise to a higher, more exalted state of existence. Therefore he felt that there needed to be some changes in the laws that governed heavenly beings. “He worked with mysterious secrecy, and for a time concealed his real purpose under an appearance of reverence for God. He began to insinuate doubts concerning the laws that governed heavenly beings,—laws that he declared were arbitrary, detrimental to the interests of the heavenly universe, and in need of change,” ST July 23, 1902.

Thus a major crisis developed among the angels and also among the inhabitants of the other worlds. “Vital interests were at stake. Would Lucifer succeed in undermining confidence in God’s law? Would he make so apparent these supposed defects in the law, that the inhabitants of the heavenly universe would be justified in claiming that the law could be improved?” ST July 23, 1902.

We can see how Lucifer’s defection created a gigantic problem for God and His benevolent government. Lucifer stooped to uttering many lies to justify his rebellion. But lying was a new thing in the universe. No one knew what a lie was. They had always been told the truth by Lucifer when he was God’s highest minister of state, and they could not fathom him telling them anything but the truth. This created great perplexity and doubts in their minds.

God knew that these perplexities and doubts needed to be resolved to prevent the other worlds from succumbing to the apostasy. God’s overruling purpose in His dealing with the rebellion that had broken out was to so thoroughly answer and resolve all the doubts and questions that have been raised so that “Affliction shall not rise up the second time,” Nahum 1:9.

But how will God secure the universe against another apostasy without taking away the freedom of choice. Isaiah 51:16 presents a mind-boggling concept about the vital role that God’s people are to play to establish the heavenly world and this earth on an eternally secure foundation. God says, “And I have put my words in thy mouth, and I have covered thee in the shadow of mine hand, that I may plant the heavens, and lay the foundations of the earth, and say unto Zion, Thou art my people.”

As noted previously, human beings were a “new and distinct order.” With His own hands, God personally formed Adam’s physical frame from the dust of the ground and then formed “the spirit (mind) of man within him,” Zechariah 12:1. The mind which God formed within man is what makes him “new and distinct” from all the other intelligences of the universe. “It was a wonderful thing for God to create man, to make mind. The glory of God is to be revealed in the creation of man in God’s image and in his redemption. One soul is of more value than a world. God created man that every faculty might be the faculty of the divine mind,” 6BC p. 1105. It is the jewel of the mind that makes mankind of such value in God’s sight that Christ was willing to die the cruel death on Calvary to redeem it.
