fIrst readInG Acts of the Apostles 2:14, 22-33

Then Peter stood up with the Eleven,raised his voice, and proclaimed:“You who are Jews, indeed all of you staying in Jerusalem.Let this be known to you, and listen to my words.You who are Israelites, hear these words.Jesus the Nazarene was a man commended to you by Godwith mighty deeds, wonders, and signs,which God worked through him in your midst, as you yourselves know.This man, delivered up by the set plan and foreknowledge of God,you killed, using lawless men to crucify him.But God raised him up, releasing him from the throes of death,because it was impossible for him to be held by it.For David says of him:‘I saw the Lord ever before me,with him at my right hand I shall not be disturbed.Therefore my heart has been glad and my tongue has exulted;my flesh, too, will dwell in hope,because you will not abandon my soul to the netherworld,nor will you suffer your holy one to see corruption.You have made known to me the paths of life;you will fill me with joy in your presence.’“My brothers, one can confidently say to youabout the patriarch David that he died and was buried,and his tomb is in our midst to this day.But since he was a prophet and knew that God had sworn an oath to himthat he would set one of his descendants upon his throne,he foresaw and spoke of the resurrection of the Christ,that neither was he abandoned to the netherworldnor did his flesh see corruption.

It was impossible for Jesus to be held by death.

God raised this Jesus;of this we are all witnesses.Exalted at the right hand of God,he received the promise of the Holy Spirit from the Fatherand poured him forth, as you see and hear.”

Preserve me, O God, for in you I take refuge. I say to the LORD, “You are my Lord.”O LORD, it is you who are my portion and cup; you yourself who secure my lot.

And so, my heart rejoices, my soul is glad;

even my flesh shall rest in hope.For you will not abandon my soul to hell, nor let your holy one see corruption.

You will show me the path of life, the fullness of joy in your presence, at your right hand, bliss forever.

Lord Jesus, open the Scriptures to us;make our hearts burn while you speak to us. - Luke 24:32

Paul M. French

GosPel John 20:1-9

That very day, the first day of the week,two of Jesus’ disciples were goingto a village seven miles from Jerusalem called Emmaus,and they were conversing about all the things that had occurred.And it happened that while they were conversing and debating,Jesus himself drew near and walked with them,but their eyes were prevented from recognizing him.He asked them,“What are you discussing as you walk along?”They stopped, looking downcast.One of them, named Cleopas, said to him in reply,“Are you the only visitor to Jerusalemwho does not know of the thingsthat have taken place there in these days?”And he replied to them, “What sort of things?”They said to him,“The things that happened to Jesus the Nazarene,

but with the precious blood of Christas of a spotless unblemished lamb.He was known before the foundation of the worldbut revealed in the final time for you,who through him believe in Godwho raised him from the dead and gave him glory,so that your faith and hope are in God.

Page 7: Who Are You Who Walk in Sorrow I r · RESPONSORIAL PSALM Psalm 16:1–2a and 5, 7–8, 9–10, 11 Preserve me, O God, for in you I take refuge. I say to the LORD, “You are my Lord.”

who was a prophet mighty in deed and wordbefore God and all the people,how our chief priests and rulers both handed him overto a sentence of death and crucified him.But we were hoping that he would be the one to redeem Israel;and besides all this,it is now the third day since this took place.Some women from our group, however, have astounded us:they were at the tomb early in the morningand did not find his body;they came back and reportedthat they had indeed seen a vision of angelswho announced that he was alive.Then some of those with us went to the tomband found things just as the women had described,but him they did not see.”And he said to them, “Oh, how foolish you are!How slow of heart to believe all that the prophets spoke!Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these thingsand enter into his glory?”Then beginning with Moses and all the prophets,he interpreted to them what referred to himin all the Scriptures.As they approached the village to which they were going,he gave the impression that he was going on farther.But they urged him, “Stay with us,for it is nearly evening and the day is almost over.”So he went in to stay with them.And it happened that, while he was with them at table,he took bread, said the blessing,broke it, and gave it to them.With that their eyes were opened and they recognized him,but he vanished from their sight.Then they said to each other,“Were not our hearts burning within uswhile he spoke to us on the way and opened the Scriptures to us?”

Page 8: Who Are You Who Walk in Sorrow I r · RESPONSORIAL PSALM Psalm 16:1–2a and 5, 7–8, 9–10, 11 Preserve me, O God, for in you I take refuge. I say to the LORD, “You are my Lord.”

So they set out at once and returned to Jerusalemwhere they found gathered togetherthe eleven and those with them who were saying,“The Lord has truly been raised and has appeared to Simon!”Then the two recountedwhat had taken place on the wayand how he was made known to them in the breaking of bread.

aPostles’ creed

The Church particularly recommends the use of the Apostles’ Creed during Easter Time. This ancient Creed, dating back to the early centuries of the Church, is the basis of our

baptismal promises.

I believe in God,the Father almighty,Creator of heaven and earth,and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,

Making a profound bow...who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,born of the Virgin Mary,

suffered under Pontius Pilate,was crucified, died and was buried;he descended into hell;

on the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven,and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty;from there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,the holy catholic Church,the communion of saints,the forgiveness of sins,the resurrection of the body,and life everlasting. Amen.

We pray for our Holy Father, our bishops and priests: that a new outpouring of the Holy Spirit may give them power to announce the dying and rising of Jesus with St. Peter’s bold conviction.

We pray for Bishop-Elect Michael McGovern: that God may grant him a fruitful min-istry and fi ll the minds and hearts of the fl ock he will shepherd with the truth of the Gospel, the power of the sacraments, and the desire to build up God’s holy Church.

We pray for an end to the plague of locusts in east Africa: that God will curtail the spread of the locust, preserve the crops, and protect the people from famine.

We pray for the poor, the sick, and those in isolation: that the Christian community will fi nd new ways to minister to their brothers and sisters in need.

We pray for all who are awaiting the sacraments of initiation: that God will sustain them, help them to deepen their commitment, and grow in their desire to serve him each day.

As we begin our building project, we pray in thanksgiving for those whose contribu-tions have led our parish to this point of growth; and for the safety of the construction workers during this project.

We pray for the intentions of those watching this broadcast. At this time, we will pause for a moment as you voice your intentions in your home, or type them in the comments fi eld to share with your community.

We pray for our faithful departed ones: that God may show them the path to life, and give them abounding joy in His presence, especially Andrew Ketterman, son-in-law of Kim and Dave Pierson.

This stained glass window is in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel of our Diocese’s Cathedral of St. Peter. The window depicts the scene of today’s gospel reading when Jesus broke bread with the

disciples after encountering them on the road to Emmaus.

Stay with us, Lord Jesus, stay with us. Stay with us, it soon is evening.Stay with us, Lord Jesus, stay with us, it soon is evening and night is falling.

Jesus Christ, the world’s true light! Shine so the darkness cannot overcome it!Stay with us, Lord Jesus, it soon is evening. Stay with us, Lord Jesus, for night is falling.

Let your light pierce the darkness and fill your church with its glory.
