Streisand SignsWith CBS -TV;$300,000 PerColumbia's Barbra Streisand
has just signed an exclusiveTV appearance contract withCBS that will last at least 10years and will guarantee herno less than $300,000 for eachof her video performances.
The contract was inked onlyafter heavy bidding, it's re-ported, between CBS and NBC.With the signing, the "FunnyGirl" star will now appear onlyon CBS radio or television. Tobegin with, her TV outings willmost likely mean one speciala year for the first few yearsand then a possible series.
Michael Dann, CBS -TV pro-gramming Vice -President, whoannounced the signing, hintedthat the first Streisand specialmight very well be a solo stint.Whatever the final decision,Columbia Records officials willprobably be thinking in termsof a tie-in album of some sort.
CBS is ThrilledExpressing CBS sentiment,
Dann said, "The thing thatmakes it so thrilling for CBSis not just that she is the mostexciting new personality tocome along since Carol Burnett, but her range of performanceis so broad. She is a distin-guished actress, a great come-dienne and certainly she is ina class by herself as a singer. This gives her enough stringthat if she wanted to carry ashow by herself, she could. Ouronly regret is that we don'thave a 50 -year contract withher."
The $300,000 fee, it should benoted, would only pertain tothe singers' specials and would

be subject to scaling in the in-stance of a weekly series.
Thrush's "People" single is9 this week and the Capitol"Funny" caster is 3. Streisandalso has her first, second andthird albums on the charts at90, 40 and 6, respectively.
The signing of Streisand fol-lows the CBS pattern of pact-ing top name entertainers toexclusive contracts in order tobuild audiences. Other recentsignees have been Decca's CarolBurnett, currently heard chirp-ing on ABC's "Fade Out-FadeIn" caster. Carol will be seenon CBS' fall "Entertainer"series as one of the headliners.
Another potent record artistdue for a CBS build-up is Col'sRobert Goulet. His first specialwill be aired Nov. 19. A serieswill follow eventually.

The diskery went to real estater Glen G. Costin and his associateFrederick Schumacher for an undisclosed sum. Costin, also in-volved in the '63 -formed theatrical production company, DallasProperties, Inc., said last week that it is too early just yet to gointo any definite policy changes. The present personnel includesJackie Mills, A&R VP; Tommy Wolf, Secretary -Treasurer; andTerri Frison, Production Coordinator. Costin assumes the presi-dent's duties until someone is found to top the operation.
Costin felt that a major flaw in the operation of late has beenlack of promotion, and plans to rectify that are due, along withadded emphasis on foreign sales. MGM Records, Ava's distributor, stays that way, at least until August when its contractual com-mitment expires.
Costin predicts that the current Ava LP release, Elmer Bern -stein's music from "The Carpetbaggers" film, will be the label'sbiggest selling album yet. It reportedly sold 19,000 in its first twoweeks of release. Said Costin: "With the tie-in we have withEmbassy Pictures and Joe Levine, together with our promotionalplans, it can't help but become Ava's biggest selling record yet."
tion of Tom Morgan, BusinessAffairs Manager for Capitol'sA&R Dept. Morgan also willcontinue in his present capa-city.
Jack L. Levy, who has beenVice President and GeneralManager of Ardmore andBeechwood for the past severalyears, is leaving to accept asimilar position with anotherpublishing firm.
Dave Clark IllDave Clark, leader of Epic's
Dave Clark Five, is hospital-ized in England, suffering froman ulcer attack.
Clark is the second Britishgroup member to be out of cir-culation due to illness recently. Two weeks ago the Capitol'sRingo Starr of the Beatles wasout of action because of tonsi-litis.

12 GREAT HITS
JIMMIE RODGERS-Dot 3579.Jimmie and his guitar give straight-
forward readings of a dozen melodicstandards. The repertoire allows himto create a sentimental, bittersweetatmosphere that distinguishes the al-bum. "I'm Always Chasing Rainbows"and "Crying in the Chapel" are in-cluded.
ON THE COUNTRYSIDE
BROOK BENTON-Mercury SR 60918.
Bros!, goes out to the country forthis album. His distinctive voice andvocal nuances give these old tunes anew and slightly rock frame. It's alikeable disk that includes "I'd TradeAll My Tomorrows" and "I Don't HurtAnymore."

THE KIM SISTERS THEIR FIRST ALBUM
Monument MLP 8022.
The Kim elpee bow is an assortmentof tunes that could hardly be more di-verse. English ballads ("Danny Boy"),off Broadway tunes ("Try to Remem-ber") and rock and rock ditties"Charlie Brown") provide the samplerof their talents. The gals are wild andenthralling on all.

IN MY SOLITUDE
ANTHONY NEWLEY-RCA Victor 2925.Anthony offers an album of impec-
cable tunes. They are all arranged (byRay Ellis) to put the accent on senti-ment and emotion. Each of them issung with sincerity and conviction. "ISee Your Face Before Me" and "GuessI'll Hang My Tears Out to Dry" setthe mood.
THE YOUNG LOVERS
SOUNDTRACK-Coln mbia OL 7010.
The music here backs a new film thatpenetrates into modern campus livingand is bound to have great appeal withlarge crowds. The music is intelligentand wistful. It's by Sol Kaplan (of"The Victors" fame) who evokes adefinite contemporary aura.
FOLKSY NINA
VINA SIMONE-Colpix 465.
Nina is heard on a disk of countrifiedsongs. The mood is moody more oftenthan not and always extremely sensi-tive. Rather than singing a song, sherecreates it to her feeling of the mo-ment. A few of the slices are "SilverCity Bound" and "The Twelfth ofNever."
HANK MARR QUARTETTE LIVE AT THE CLUB 502
King 899.
Hank, Rusty Bryant, Wilbert Long -mire and Taylor Orr make some stimu-lating jazz waves on the organ, sax, guitar and drums. Some of the tunesare tried and true and others are origi-nal Marr compositions. All get groovyworkouts and add up to an above parjazz disk.
LITTLE BIG HORN
NAT ADDERLEY-Riverside 474.
Nat plays a mellow cornet that pro-duces some mournful and movingsounds. He is assisted by faultlesssidemen on this one. Junior Mance,Kenny Burrell, Jim Hall and othersprovide this complementary backing.

ARMADA:BY DOUG McCLELLANDThe sixth annual ARMADA
Convention is here-at MiamiBeach's Eden Roc Hotelthrough July 1-and the timeis ripe for a look at recent, current and future events re-lating to the independent rec-ord distributors and, indeed, the entire recording industry.
In recent months there havebeen a number of new labelsbrought into the market-aproliferation, veritably-andpost -convention days seem cer-tain to find the alignments ofdistributorships undergoingdrastic changes. The meetingsbetween the new labels andparties now entering the dis-ributing field are bringingforth these new moves and
Yesterday, Today 6i. Tomorrowthey will be reflected via greatchanges in Florida and WestCoast cities, particularly, ac-cording to one ARMADAknowledgeable.
"Some manufacturers feelthat some distributors havenot been doing their job," hewent on. "Most of the indiemanufacturers don't have suffi-cient releases, however. A dis-tributor can't stay in businesswith only a small amount ofproduct from indie manufac-turers; and the problem hasbeen that many distributorshave absorbed almost too manylines, with the attention goingto the hits, or those manufac-turers that make the mostnoise the soonest. The labelsthat don't have the hits want
their share, too.""Some labels will be dropped
as the industry settles down toa more conservative pattern. There'll be greater emphasison inventory control from thedistributors; and a more ma-ture, less emotional state be-tween label and distrib is al-ready in sight."
Distributors, too, have beensinging the blues about a salesslump. It's seasonal, of course, but a lot feel that when agroup like The Beatles comesalong and sweeps the country, they also sweep all otherproduct out the back door. Dis-tributors maintain that indus-try figures indicating an over-all sales boom are not trulyreflective of industry health

when it's only a couple oflabels and select distributorsthat are reaping the rewards.
Conventioneers are optimis-tic about improvements in theretail area, mainly because re-ports indicate that book clubshave nose-dived in sales which,it would appear, means that thepublic is not anxious for thistype of merchandising anylonger. The public is gettingout more, no longer wants tobe inundated with mail nordoes it want to have to monitordeliveries. The rate of mem-bership in book clubs is fall-ing off, too, signifying furtherthat if the public is in thiskind of a buying mood, it's notlikely to be overly liberal torecord club offerings, either.
Consumer Patterns ChangingThe retail end of the trade
has long been beefing aboutabout record clubs, and theseclubs are now approachingdark days if current experi-ences with book clubs meananything. However . . . booksat the retail level are holdingup pretty well-all of whichsubstantiates the theory ofmany that consumer patternsare changing.
"People are going back tothe specialized record market,"a retailing expert told RecordWorld last week.
The new picture for distribu-tors following the ARMADAConvention?
"Diversification throughmergers or purchases or othertypes of affiliations with racksand one -stops," opined anothersource close to the situation."The major members of AR-MADA have heavily investedin racks. It's already fairlynormal to consider the racksapart from the distributors."
It was also stated by an AR-MADA official that, whether ornot FTC Corn. John Reillymade known the record indus-try rules, at this time, "It's aforegone conclusion that AR-MADA as an association willmake sure that the FTC rulesare not meaningless."
There has been considerabletalk lately of a resurgence ofrecord pirating or counterfeit-ing, but an ARMADA spokes-man said there are no com-plaints lodged with the asso-ciation "at present. We are, however, observing a case in thejurisdiction of New York."
The same contact continued:"The record industry in itspresent form is a little less than20 years old, and it's been goingthrough a lot of growing pains. The men in the business who

Kapp's Lipman on Little LPMIAMI BEACH-Macey Lipman, Kapp Records sales execu-
tive, in a speech Saturday, June 27, at the Eden Roc Hotel beforeROSA, told members that the little LP is a very important prod-uct and that through their own lack of awareness, they have sofar not made the effort to capitalize on this "profit -making item."
He stated that because one stops are the most important linkin distribution between manufacturers and operators, the onestops have a responsibility to see that this product is promotedand merchandised properly. Lipman outlined the Seeburg methodof distribution and showed the members at the meeting howSeeburg had monopolized this area of the coin -machine business.
Lipman stated adamantly, "Either you recognize the value ofthe little LPs or you will forego business and slight the jukebox operators, who helped make you flourish."
He announced that Kapp, after researching the market, hasdecided to launch a full-scale program for promoting, merchandis-ing and distributing these little LPs with an initial August releaseof 10 records, including Jack Jones' "Wives And Lovers," RogerWilliams' "Solid Gold Steinway," Louis Armstrong's "HelloDolly!" and Jane Morgan's "Greatest Hits."
Lipman concluded by referring to Columbia's and Kapp's movesinto this area as an indication of the confidence both companieshave in the future of the little LPs, and said further, "If themembers of ROSA were to adopt a positive attitude towards sup-porting and promoting the little LPs, there is every reason tobelieve this could be a most successful, original and profitableventure."

Complete SpectrumColumbia's 45 Aim
BY DAVE FINKLENEW YORK -A glance at
the Top 100 singles chart thisweek shows three Columbiasingles of wide divergence. They're Barbra Streisand's"People" at 10, the NewChristy's "Today" at 34 and"Angelito" by Rene and Reneat 53. The varying back-grounds of these two disksis indicative of the broadColumbia singles operation, which was described to RecordWorld last week by Bob Thomp-son, Columbia's National Pro-motion Manager.
(The Rip Chords' "ThreeWindow Coupe" at 70, SteveLawrence's "Everybody Knows"at 79 and Andy Williams'"Wrong for Each Other" at 94are other Col single chartentries this week.)
The disks in question,Thompson said, indicate thatthe company has "continued aprogram started almost threeyears ago to build a strong andrepresentative showing in thesingle record picture."
"These singles," he con-tinued, "generally speakingfollow the same philosophy asthe company as a whole-acomplete musical spectrum thatincludes everything from`Three Window Coupe' by TheRip Chords to Johnny Cash."
The mention of Cash prompt-ed Thompson to detail theCol single -into -album strate-gies. "When we speak of Cash,"he noted, "we have to stressthe story of how a hot singlesline creates vitality and excite-ment throughout a company. The 'Ring of Fire' LP is stillselling well because of thesingle's success."
Thompson agreed that theintent of the singles operationswas to find the right material
Bob Thompson
for its expanding roster ofartists so that hit singles couldbe turned into albums. "Thesingle record is 95% of theexcitement in the business," heopined, "so we're dedicated toit."
Thompson feels that hits (orwhat the company senses willbe hits) must be "exposed toboth eye and ear."
For that reason the companypays special attention to theneeds of radio stations, espe-cially Top 40 programmers. Asa result, Col was named by theradio stations last year as No.I in radio servicing and No. Iin improvement in radio servic-ing. What with 225 to 250singles releases a year the com-pany has to sense which willhit the biggest and then sendradio stations the air playcopies they need.
Thompson pointed out thatnowadays the Top 10 or sosongs are the most playedwhereas in the past the newreleases got the most play. Tomake certain that stationsare not stuck with worn copies

CAPERSThe Value Of A Hype
BY TED RANDAL
HOLLYWOOD-It's hard to believe, but there are still asurprisingly large number of record companies and promotionmen who are convinced the only way to get a record played isto tell a disk jockey or music director it has sold an astronomicalnumber of copies in a major market.
It makes no difference to them whether they have sold halfthat number anywhere; they are so used to hyping, it is almostimpossible to tell the truth. Most of us on this end of the busi-ness used to look at them and say, "Shame." Now we turn awayand chuckle, for we know they are only telling funny littlestories. Incidentally, we rarely play their records, for no onewants to support a cause that is built on a lie.
Fortunately, there is a new breed of promotion men that isdeveloping very rapidly and successfully. It is composed of hard-working, astute and knowledgeable men who have found theycan offer the dj a valuable service-Jtipping him off to futurehits that will help build his audience. This new type of pro-motion man works in a strange way. He works at his job fromeight to 15 hours per day, and his main concern is building anhonest and friendly relationship with station personnel. Does hehype records? You bet he does! And when he hypes a disk jockeyon a record, chances are he'll be believed, for this new breedalways tells the truth. Admittedly, it is not always easy to tellan inquisitive deejay that a "plug" record is not selling, butmost jocks are professional enough to want to help break arecord that has a good sound. The new breed has also found thatradio men have long memories; they don't forget the man whosaid, "Get off the record; it's not selling," and they remember theguy who first tipped them off to the #1 record they happened tomiss.
Unfortunately, the old breed is dying slowly, but bit by bit itis lessening in numbers. When it is finally extinct, both theradio and record industries will breathe a sigh of relief.

Guyden records has pur-chased one of the hottest records on the West Coast, "DanceFranny Dance" by The Floyd Dakil Combo. Command ClickingWith First Single
Label Topper Light Has SecondReady, Is Planning More
BY DAVE FINKLE
NEW YORK-It's quite a rarity when a diskery can come upwith a Top 10 single on the first try, so it's understandable thatEnoch Light, Command Records topper, is proud of his previouslyall -album company's 45 bow, "Love Me With All Your Heart,"which rose on the nation's charts to the No. 2 spot. (Disk is No. 10on Record World's list this week.)
Light's pride swells evenmore when he mentions that hedecided to release the "LoveMe" single from the RayCharles Singers' "SomethingSpecial for Lovers" LP despitethe advice of doubters who saidthe tune had already been of-fered on the singles market inother versions and hadn't got-ten off the ground.
But, Light explained to Rec-ord World last week, "The rec-ord was so strong, we had tobring it out. And now we haveeven a better one ready to fol-low it up with-`Al-Di-La."(This one is from the RayCharles Singers' new albumwhich will be released three tofour weeks after the singlepreems.)
The new single is onlyone of a number the companyplans to release, Light said, since it wants to make a last-ing mark in the field. In a shorttime there will be two more 45sby other Command artists, butthe label head didn't want tomention names just yet. Thenthere will be more when thewaxery is ready.
"We are very excited aboutCommand in the singles field. We expect that having singleson our line will tremendouslyincrease our selling power inthe foreign market. In someforeign markets singles aremore important than albumsand our singles will give thatmany more people familiaritywith our product."
On the frequency and quan-tity of releases, Light has defi-nite opinions. "We probablywon't release more than onesingle a month," he stated,"and then we'll work on it, be-cause we feel that if it's worthreleasing, it's worth workingon. That's the way we've alwaysworked our album releases. And although we only releaseabout 18 or 19 albums a year,we've managed to maintain ourposition as one of the top 10companies in sales."
Light reported that singleswill be released from albums
Enoch Light
when the company feels thereis a strong enough slice to goit on its own, but if they get agood idea for a single, theywon't hesitate to produce itwith or without album.
"We're a quality line, and al-though we know the teen wantsa definite beat to his records,at the same time he wants alittle better music."
"There's too much on themarket these days." he com-plained. "Everybody seems to bewildly trying, hoping for a mir-acle to happen. It's time we tooka second look at what we're do-ing. You have to work to get amiracle. Buyers want selectedentertainment. It's up to the in-dustry to do the pre-screening tokeep people enthusiastic."
"And," he pointed out, "withso much being released, thedealer gets skeptical too."
But dealers won't be too skep-tical about Command albums-and certainly not singles, either, after the present success. Lightis determined to keep it thatway.
Audition 'Echo'ROCHESTER, N.Y. - Audi-
tion Records, handled by CircaDistributing, Calif., is releasingone of its most important sin-gles since the start of the disk-ery last October. It's "Echo," byThe Vaqueros.

counts heavily on a strong pro-motion staff. They stress pointof sales campaigns and ex-posure of album covers else-where. Col has been increasingits promo staff, which Thomp-son deems "the eyes and earsof the A&R department."
These men in the field are ex-pected to report any signs ofregional trends or action on asingle disk that could havenational sales potential. Hencethe acquisition of a master like"Angelito" which started in theTexas area. Hence the releaseof the Ray Conniff singers on"Invisible Tears," the countrytune that the company felt"was just begging to go pop."
At the basis of all successfulsingles, Thompson stated, isthe blend of the right artistwith the right material. "Wewant to sign talented peoplethat can develop any way. That's why we signed BarbraStreisand and Robert Goulet, who were in Broadway showsat the time we signed them. And neither of them were instarring parts," he stressed.
Col is looking to build a newgroup of artists right now, itmust be mentioned, with therelease of recent rock -slantedsingles by new contracteesKenny Rankin, Linda Hall, TheOrchids, Linda Lloyd and TheQuinto Sisters.
Label takes special care in de-ciding the release dates of fol-low-up singles, Thompson
om page 16)noted. "It's always good totake advantage of the excite-ment generated by a hit singleand release the follow-up ontop of it," he said, "but not ifyou don't have the right ma-terial." This accounts, hestated, for the fact that anartist like Dion DiMuci, whohas not had a single release ina while, has a lay-off betweendisks. "The public won't forgetan artist who's a star," he wenton. "Continuity of product iswhat we strive for."
When a single is due out,Thompson said, the companytakes the standard proceduresof alerting the promo men tothe single, the artist and thesong title with an intent towork up advance enthusiasm.
New Jazz SliceRight now the waxery is wax-
ing gleeful over an upcomingjazz slice from Dave Brubeck.Thompson said the companytakes pride in feeling that itpaved the way for recent jazzsingle successes by convincingstations to play Brubeck's"Take Five" a few years back. Now they have another one onthe way and hope to meet withbig welcomes. The song iscalled "Toki's Theme" andshould be out this week.
"Last year," Thompsonclosed, "we had our biggestsingle year. And so far in 1964we have more than kept pacewith market conditions. At onepoint in February we had sevensingles by different artists onTop 40 stations at the sametime. We hope to continue fol-lowing an artist's hit withstrong new releases plus thejoy and excitement of makingsuch a hit as `Angelito'."

The Stones Hit Carnegie& Shake Up 'Pebbles'
NEW YORK - The RollingStones from Britain used bodyEnglish to score a success at ajammed Carnegie Hall June20.
Early unrest among the pre-dominantly 12 -15 -year -oldfemme crowd turned to pande-monium when the boys-dressedin their dirty laundry-ap-peared. From there on in it wasanybody's guess as to whenthe crowd would break awayfrom its seats and storm thestage to grab at the gyratingLondon Records musicians.
Policemen stalked the aislescontinuously, however, andrelative peace was keptthroughout the short (seven oreight number) evening stint.(There was an afternoon con-cert, too.)
Considering the conditions,it's impossible to judge the re-
sultant music making. Andfrom the way the girls reacted,it seemed that music was thelast thing they had come for, anyway. All a reviewer cansay is that there were definitemusical vibrations-sometimesfast and sometimes slow.
Too bad, since the Stoneshave evidenced a talent for acompelling and insinuatinghard rack beat on their recordsand it might have been niceto hear it in the concert hall-presented as a valid form.
On the b ill with thegroup was Bobby Goldsboro,an adept and, under the cir-cumstances, courageous per-former and Jay and The Amer-ican's, who were kempt andamiable.
One last thought: What everhappened to English reserve?

New York reviewers gaveBurton the edge in the poetryreading -comprehension depart-ment, but were practicallyunanimous in their praise forMiss Taylor's comic flair andgood looks.
Burton is continuing his roleas "Hamlet" at that sametheater. The Columbia albumof the production is now onRecord World's top album chartat 92, a notable sales feat fora spoken word LP, and a classi-cal one at that. Miss Taylorwas heard reciting poetry onlast year's Colpix TV sound-track album, "Elizabeth Tay-lor In London," but the saleswere not in the same class withher husband's "Hamlet" pack-age. Nor were her readings, according to the critics, al-though again she was thoughtto be funny and beautiful.

Film Review
Connie's 'Love'Likeable Vehicle
Connie Francis' new MGMfilm, "Looking for Love," willprobably prove just the thingto satisfy summer vacationerson the look -out for light, youth-ful diversion. It's a totally un-real color entertainment withmany laughs (with and at thestory), many songs and manyyoung performers.
The involved but uninvolvingplot follows the plight of ayoung singer (Connie, whoelse?) who can't get started onher own, but gets catapulted tofame when she invents a "ladyvalet"-a weird device for ca-reer girls to hang their clotheson overnight in preparation forthe next day's wearing. (Thecontraption looks extremelypractical, girls.)
The story line may be witless, but it's amiable and relaxing asConnie rises to the big time-all the while searching for aman to love. Her odyssey givesher the chance to sing in a vari-ety of moods, thereby showcas-ing her versatility as a songs-tress. Her lip -syncing, however,is noticeably off -kilter at timesand things should have beencorrected. Connie also has somecomedic moments, which shebrings off winningly.
The rest of the cast, addingspice to the goings-on, includeJim Hutton, Susan Oliver, JobyBaker, Jesse White and briefappearances (in some instancesextremely brief) by Johnny Car-son, Danny Thomas, GeorgeHamilton, Yvette Mimieux andPaula Prentiss.
Dealers will find that the bestpart of the film are the credits. They show the MGM sound-track LP in action and serveto impress upon prospective al-bum buyers just what label tolook for when looking for "Look-ing for Love."

IThe Beach Boys
Beach Boys #1;Made Surf SoundWhat It Is Today
The Beach Boys' "I GetAround" (Capitol) moves intothe #1 spot of Record World'ssingles chart this week anddoes so as sales for the record, according to a label spokesman, head for the one million mark.(Over 910,000 have been soldto date.)
This latest "coupe" coup isjust one of a list of Beach Boysingles (usually two-sided hits)that have accounted for six toeight million singles sales. Andthese sales have accrued inlarge part during the fabled"soft" summer months.
Thrill of SurfingIt would seem that this re-
versal in sales trends was dueto the BB's creation and ex-ploitation of music that glori-fies the thrill of surfing-pri-marily a summer sport-thatbegan to gain devotees threeyears ago, just prior to theboys' merger.
Beach Boy Brian Wilson, along with Beach Boy MikeLove, has been responsible toa great extent for the surfingsound (which in time was alsoused as the hot rod sound inorder to accommodate out -of -surf -season trends). A musi-cian admittedly influenced bythe Four Freshmen, Brianseems to have used for histunes and arrangements FourFreshmen harmonies coupledwith a melodic line of easy flowthat at once suggests speed, smoothness and cool exhilara-tion-the attributes of surfingitself. (The boys also writetunes now for other artists.)
Brian and Mike are joinedin the group by Brian's broth-ers, Dennis (who is creditedwith the idea of starting a surf
sing team) and Carl and AlJardine-all of them musicians.
Too Little ExposureFor a group of such resound-
ing influence on the trade(Capitol says they're the big-gest domestic recordinggroup), The Beach Boys havehad relatively little exposure.Their dedication to surfing andtheir bookings on the Coasthave kept them from travelingout of the Pacific region verymuch at all.
But with the current hit gain-ing them even more attention, there are plans for an Ed Sul-livan outing that might be partof an Eastern tour. Also, aCapitol speaker reports con-sumer mag interest in the boysthat could result in some im-portant spreads.
A new BB album, "All Sum-mer Long," is out this week. Itfeatures "I Get Around." Sales -wise and song wise that couldn'tbe truer.

A Loss to Majors"There's been a grudging ad-
mission from the majors that it'dbe a loss to them if all of theseemerging indies were to die out. They're counting on the indiesto do all the real prospecting fornew types of music, to forgeahead with new concepts. Themajors can't afford to invest toomuch because of the ultra -con-servative policies of their par-ent companies. The indie manu-facturer is bringing in the newcreative ideas and throwingthem to the public. If they be-come successful, then the majorsgamble on them."
ARMADA has come up witha lot of new faces for thisyear's convention, many fromthe West Coast, probablybrought out by the lure of thenew trade practice rules. Mostof the ARMADA membershipthat's been with it through theyears is still present, along witha healthy sprinkling of newlabels. Manufacturer member-ship this year is considerablylarger than last year, reportsindicate.

than any other window displayshe can remember.
At Lowe's StoreThis example of unusually ef-
fective use of the displays wasseen at Lowe's Michigan Avenuestore in Chicago. The windowwas composed of some 35 Merc-ury album covers, seven ofwhich were in frames displayedon tiers. Backing the albumswas corrugated paper printed ina summery floral motif.
The window display was su-pervised by Lee Lewin, managerof the Lowe's store for twoyears. "We've had really excel-lent reaction to the window,"Miss Lewin said. "The framesreally set off the albums, andadd a lot of class to the wholearrangement."
Miss Lewin pointed out thatthe frames, because of their sim-plicity, can be adapted to anyspecial holiday or seasonal dis-play in the window.
Because of the excellent deal-er response, Mercury is makingthe displays available again inits new June "Hit Wave" pro-gram. This is the first time inhistory that Mercury has car-ried a display offer over into anew program. Along with thedisplays, Mercury is offeringlaminated C & W album coversto be used for its special "Coun-try Fair" promotion. A special"Country Fair" header, designedin the shape of a western hat,has also been added.

CHIT ATKINS, MAKE ME A STAR (Parody, BMI)I NEVER DID FINISH THAT SONG (Parody, BMI)
DON BOWMAN-RCA Victor 47-8384.Don has an "in" song here that kinda takes off Chet Atkins.
Don Bowman does the singing and playing and it's all for laughs.A chorus takes the main part of the singing, but it's Don whogets all the yoks. A cute c/w side.
THERE'S A BIG WHEEL (Acuff -Rose, BMI)FISHERMAN'S LUCK (Acuff -Rose, BMI)
LONNIE DONEGAJ%-Hickory 1267.Lonnie has a preachment to make and clues on a hippity c/w
ditty that rolls along. A 12 -string guitar has a lot of action, too.The idea is that there's a fate larger than all of us that keeps usin line.
IF ANYONE CAN SHOW CAUSE (Starday, BMI)STRONGER THAN DIRT (Starday, BMI)
GLENN BARBER-Starday 676.Glenn sings this one at the wedding of his ex -girl. This is a pure
country side that will bring a tear to many an eye. Like a gentle-man Glenn doesn't speak up to stop the wedding. Sales won't bestopped, either.
WELCOME TO THE CLUB (Be -Are. BMI)ANOTHER MAN (Be -Are, BMI)
GREEN GRAY-Daralioa 1051.Green and a gal chorus are members of a lonely club and they
welcome others. The song has a swing to it that will entrancethe country listeners. Should gather a load of fans.
WILL THERE EVER BE ANOTHER (Glad, BMI)PLEASE BE MY LOVE (Glad, BMI)
GEORGE JONES AND MELBA MONTGOMERY-United Artists 732.
These two strong -voiced country stars team up for a potent singleentry. They sing in an ingratiating harmony and tell the story oftwo lovers who have had a parting of the ways. Will go far.
LOVE WAS RIGHT HERE ALL THE TIME (Window, BMI)MR. AND MRS. USED TO BE (Sure -Fire, BMI)
L'RAES1' TUBB AAD LORETTA LEN A-Decca 31643.Loretta and Ernest passed each other up and realized it too late.
They sound mighty fine together, and fans will feel the same way. This teaming should pay off nicely for all concerned. The tune is sad.
THE WRECK OF THE OLD '97 (Johnny Cash, BMI)HAMMERS AND NAILS (Moss Rose, BMI)
THE STATLER BROTHERS-Columbia 443069.The Brothers have a Johnny Cash ballad to sing. It's a tale with
a moral about a fast -driving train. The ditty has a strength thatwill engage the country buyer. The flip is good, too.
THE LUCKIEST HEARTACHE IN TOWN (Brazos Valley, BMI)WHATEVER HAPPENED TO MARY? (Texoma, ASCAP)
HANK THOMPSON-Capitol 5217.Hank has an off -beat country ditty here. The beat has a distinct
Dixie sound and there are a few other jazzy elements in it. Hanksings it with enjoyment, and the whole caboodle should makefriends.

HarmonicaHappeningIt looks as if 1964 will be
the year of the harmonica. Pop,blues, country and folk musi-cians are all taking up thelittle instrument. In Englandits popularity with the phenom-enal rock groups has the sup-pliers working overtime.
The Beatles' hit, "Love MeDo," opens with a powerfulharmonica solo, and it hasmade spectacular headway onthe charts. Manfred Mann's"5-4-3-2-1" relies on rhythmicharmonica work. Other Englishgroups, such as The Dave ClarkFive, The Rolling Stones, TheMerseybeats and The Batche-lors use the harmonica as well.Sonny Terry plays his bluesharmonica on his new release,"First Meetin'," on World Pa-cific.
Buddy Lucas provides soul-ful harmonica background onArethra Franklin's "Unforget-table." The harmonica of TootsThielemans (Composer of"Blues-ette") is featured on Mercury's"Quincy Jones Explores theMusic of Henry Mancini."
On the folk scene, the comingNewport Festival will havemore harmonica players thanever before. The harmonica inits around -the -neck holder hasbecome the trademark of BobDylan, whose latest release is"The Times They Are A'-Changin' " for Columbia. JohnHammond, too, has scored withhis harmonica on his recordsfor Vanguard. To the jugbands, the harmonica is as vi-tal as the jug -Mel Lyman isharmonicist for Jim Kweskin'sJug Band, while Mike Seegerleads and plays harmonica forthe New Lost City Ramblers.
The country music field isrepresented by Jimmy Riddle'sCumberland album, "CountryHarmonica."
And the ever -popular RichardHayman has just released agroup of hits he helped to be-come standards on "The Best
HARMONICA HITMAKERS -Teenage harmonica sensationStevie Wonder (left) andrhythm and blues star MarvinGaye compare their instru-ments at a recording session.Stevie's record of "Hey Har-monica Man" is climbing rapid-ly, and Marvin is representedby a number of hits. Marvinalso plays the Rohner Melo-dica. Both record for Tamla-Motown.
of Richard Hayman," on theAscot label.
The number and success ofrecords featuring the harmon-ica indicates that the instru-ment will have profound effecton the music industry.

Decca's Vicki Carroll is a busy little girl nowadays. She closesat The Domino in Atlanta July 4, then opens July 6 with Victor'sChet Atkins and Floyd Cramer in Houston, and July 13 she be-gins a two-week engagement in Windsor, Ontario. She's a verypopular gal around here where she appears in The Rainbow Roomfrequently. Her current Decca slicing, "This Can't Be You," isstirring up quite a bit of air action around the country.
United Artists' Georgie Riddle is back after a swing throughthe Midwest hitting Chicago, Kansas City, Milwaukee, and is nowreadying for a tour that will carry him to Texas, Arizona andNew Mexico. Georgie is enjoying good air -play on his latestUA release, "They Bought The House Next Door." KPCN Radio,Grand Prairie, Texas, recently featured Riddle records one after-noon, with Georgie an "in -person surprise guest."
Bob Sticht is back in radio at 50,000 watt WLAC in Nashville. He was formerly with the Storz stations and WINN, Louisville,Ky., under the name of Bob Robbin. At WALC, Bob is hostingthe 6 to 9 A.M. segment of "Wonderful WLAC Music."
Decca's Loretta Lynn was the surprised recipient of a babyshower this past week. Party was thrown at the home of Victor'sDottie West's with a large number of Music City members fromthe distaff side present. This will be Loretta's fifth!
ARTIST OF THE WEEK: GRANDPA JONESThe nod for Artist Of The Week goes to Monument's Grandpa
Jones. Gramps has never been what could be called a real chart -buster, but he's always been a consistent record seller and ashowman of the first order.
Monument, this week released its third album on Grandpasince he joined the label, "Grandpa Jones Sings Real Folk Songs."This in itself is somewhat of a moral victory for "Old Leather."He'll quickly tell you that if there's anything he can't stand, it'smodern day folk singers doing phony folk songs. I'll guaranteeyou that what you hear in this new album is the real thing, orGramps wouldn't be doing them.
The better half of Grandpa, lovely Ramona, is heard on severalof the cuts in the album. Gramps' real professionalism goes backto the early King Records days of The Brown's Ferry Four, com-posed of Alton & Raeburn Delmore, Merle Travis and Grandpa. When Merle couldn't be around they used Red Foley to do thebass singing. Some of the greatest picking and singing ever donein the country field is on those old recordings.
Then there's his classic "Mountain Dew" and "Old Rattler,"two great sides that continue to sell. But the thing that reallyputs him among the best when it comes to being a real artistoccurs when he hits a stage. He's a showman from the momenthe walks on till it's all over. He works hard because he loves it.Ask 'em at Carnegie Hall in New York! He's been there twice, and right now they're trying to set him again. He's wowed 'emin Madison Square Garden and the Hollywood Bowl. He's encoredin places that would frighten others. And whether he's on thestage at Carnegie facing a packed house, or in a one -room school-house in Slow Gourd, Ala., he works just as hard, somethingmany of our modern stars could learn from Gramps. Ask anyonein the trade. They'll tell you, "Gramps is great!" He's been onKing, Decca, RCA Victor and now Monument, and that's wherehe's gonna stay. "Fred's (Foster) a jewel. If I can't make it withhim, I'll just quit," he says.
As far as most of us are concerned, he's always "made it" andalways will. Gramps' Ramona's got talent, too. Fred just recordedher, and the first single should be out this week.

38 RECORD WORLD-July 4, 1964
Classical Corner
RCA, Columbia, Angel, London, Mercury,Vanguard Et Philips Make Summer HotterTime was when labels pre-
served their strongest productfor the fall. But that's a thingof the past.
Taking their cue from theconcert world which holds manyimportant long -hair festivalsthroughout summer months(The Boston Symphony at Tan-glewood; the New York Phil-harmonic at Lewisohn Stadium; The Chicago Symphony at Ra-vinia; The Aspen ColoradoMusic Festival; The Philadel-phia Orchestra at Robin HoodDell and many more, recordcompanies have come to realizethat the market for classicsdoes not fall off. That, in thepast, they have checked salesin the warmer months by hold-ing their big guns till the fall.In the last several years man-ufacturers have successfullybucked the old saw that noone wants to buy classics insummer.
This year consumers face anembarrassment of riches inJune and July. If he's a Baro-quenik, he'll find his heart'sdelight on Mercury, Philipsand Vanguard. If he likes popsconcerts, he'll love RCA's new"Great Moments from Fleder-maus" and the four recent Bos-ton Pops albums. On Colum-bia, he's got to go for Or-mandy's new "Reverie" and hisnew bargain album that com-bines all three Roman tonepoems of Respighi on one LP.Respighi's spectacularly scoredmusic is the forerunner ofscores like "Three Coins in theFountain" which was also in-spired by Rome. Angel offersthe serious collector threeWagnerian gems in recordingsby Klemperer and FriedrichSchorr, and delightful Mozartand Handel by Menuhin. Inthe standard concerto reper-toire Mercury offers new re-cordings of the Beethoven Vio-lin Concerto by Szigeti andChopin's First Piano Concertoby the brilliant Greek virtuosoGina Bachauer.
RCA has six Red Seal win-ners: a new English versionof the ever -popular Straussoperetta, "Fledermaus," whichhas been a big hit in Americaever since the Met's first Eng-lish production in the early'50s. Heading a brilliant castare Rise Stevens recreating arole she made famous at theMet - the decadent, young
Prince Orlofsky. By the way,Stevens was in the Met Pro-duction of 1950 that was re-corded by Columbia in its en-tirety. The present recordinghas all the hits from "Fleder-maus." Written by Vienna'sgreat Waltz King, JohannStrauss, Jr., you can bet thereare many lilting melodies justas infectious as the famous,or should we say, infamous,"Blue Danube."
Anyone who hears Scovotti'sfresh -voiced Adele in the"Laughing Song" has to buythe album. From its cham-pagne -filled overture to thefinale-this album's a delight. And why shouldn't it be, withvoices like Sergio Franchi (ifever a voice was made to singoperetta, his is, and he's bril-liantly cast as Alfred, one ofAdele's hot-blooded suitors) ?Anna Moffo makes a delightfulRosalinda. A 1 s o on hand :George London as the craftyDr. Falke and Richard Lewisas the foppish Eisenstein.
Paul Lavalle conducts theWorld's Fair Symphony Or-chestra in Grofe "World's FairSuite." It isn't up to his"Grand Canyon Suite," but ithas some dandy movementsthat are sure to appeal on firsthearing. It closes with a finemarch called "National," while"Fun at The Fair" portrayshurdy-gurdies and hot-dogstands, rollicking rides and agood-humored crowd. Sound ismagnificent, and given the factthat so much is going for theFair, plus the cover shot-aphoto of the Unisphere, theWorld's Fair symbol - albumshould do well.
From Fiedler and the BostonPops come four sure-fire sell-ers (re -recordings for stereo ofbest-selling Boston Pops monoalbums) : "Rhapsody" ("Rhap-sody in Blue," "Espana," etc.) ;"Music America Loves Best"("William Tell Overture,""Danse Macabre," etc.);"Slaughter on 10th Avenue"("Exodus," "Mack the Knife,""Peter Gunn" theme, etc.) ; and"Favorite Dances and March-es" ("Sabre Dance"; "Three -Cornered -Hat Dances," etc.).
All are played with the vim, vigor and verve that make thePops a household institutionthroughout America. These al-bums are musts for buyers get-ting interested in the classics.
Columbia
Columbia has four warm -weather winners. Ormandy'srecently released "Reverie"album features the clas-sics that inspired "My Reve-rie," "Stranger in Paradise,""And This Is My Beloved,""The Lamp Is Low" and "AStory of Three Loves" theme.Album has shown excellentmovement across the country, and Columbia reports over 10,-000 sales within first month ofrelease.
Ormandy is again featuredin the first LP to containall three sumptuous -soundingtone poems of Rome by Res-pighi. They're all fabulousstereo showpieces. Eileen Far-rell and Richard Tucker starin a hit parade of Puccini -Verdi favorites which includes"La donna e mobile," "Che ge-lida manina," "They Call MeMimi," "Musetta's Waltz" and"One Fine Day." Most news-worthy release is Bernstein'snew recording of his ThirdSymphony "Kaddish" in a per-formance of theatrical inten-sity under the composer's di-rection. "Kaddish" has receivedtremendous press acclaim inBoston and New York pre-mieres. In addition, Columbiahas a special ad campaign inJewish press to reach over 1,-000,000 readers. Album is topturnover now!
AngelFrom Angel comes two
single albums released fromKlemperer's two -pocket Wag-ner set issued over a year ago.Performances and recordingstill remain tops. Klemperer'sweight and ability to make theorchestra sing in long, drawn-out sighs as well as build cli-maxes of heroic proportionsmake him an ideal Wagner con-ductor.
For vocal collectors Angel'sGreat Recording of the Cen-tury offers one of the finestalbums in the entire series:magnificent transfers to LP ofFredrich Schoor's memorableportrayal of Hans Sachs inWagner's "Die Miestersinger."The transfer is so good it'shard to believe these record-ings were originally issued inthe early 1930s. Schorr's deep, rich, baritone, his ability toact with his voice made him agreat Sachs. This is surely one
of the "Great Recordings ofthe Century." Speaking of"The Great Recordings Series,"John Coveney of Angel reportsthe $1.00 sampler "GreatVoices of the Century" haspassed the 70,000 sales mark andis still going strong. Samplershould create peak demand for"Great Recordings" series thissummer.
Violinst Yehudi Menuhinand the Bath Festival Orches-tra contribute brilliant record-ings of Mozart's Sinfonia Con-certante for Violin and Viola(with violist Rudolf Barshai)and a bouncing performance ofHandel's Complete Water Mu-sic Suite in a more intimate -sounding disk than the recentKubelik on D.G.G. Menuhingets marvelous teamwork fromhis top-notch chamber orches-tra which he leads in the old-fashioned way of middle Euro-pean kappelmeisters: from hisfirst -chair violin position. Clas-sical fans should turn out indroves for these gems.
MercuryMercury has just issued two
recordings of standard warhorse concerti. The BeethovenViolin Concerto in a new re-cording by Joseph Szigeti withDorati conducting the LondonSymphony and Greek pianistGina Bachauer in a new re-cording of Chopin's FirstPiano Concerto (also with Do-rati and the London). Both willfind tough sledding againstcompetitive versions. Szigeti'sBeethoven is beautifullyphrased. Szigeti is one of thegreatest musicians to draw abow, but in matters of tone heleaves much to be desired. Still,if you can overlook Szgeti'sthin tone and a vibrato whichisn't always sure-he has a lotto say. Szigeti fans will haveto have this, and many review-ers (who appraised his Brahmsconcerto) will stimulate sales.
Gina Bachauer's Chopin isno match for Rubinstein's.Whose is? She plays very mu-sically. Her runs are brilliantlyexecuted-but it never quitegets off the ground. She seemsto be much more at home inthe familiar Chopin solos thatfill out the disk.
Mercury has a pair of win-ners in albums devoted toBaroque music. Presti and La-goya star in an album of Four

Concertos (Vivaldi, Haydn,Marcello) for Two Guitars(with Kurt Redel conductingthe Pro Arte Orchestra of Mu-nich). Clean, crisp, buoyantperformances (featuring theastounding articulation andmusicianship of Presti and La-goya) make this a cherishabledisk to Baroqueniks.
With Kapp's tremendous suc-cess of the Music for Trumpet& Orchestra series still fresh,Mercury has issued an out-standing disk of Four Concer-tos for Trumpets. Among thegems on this are a StoelzelConcerto for Six Trumpets,Four Kettledrums, Two Harp-sichords and Double String Or-chestra. Stoelzel, a contempo-rary of Bach, has composed awork not unlike Bach's best-selling Brandenburg Concerti.Air play could really breakthis one. Telemann's Two Con-certos for Trumpet are also fine-but Leopold Mozart's Con-certo is not up to the otherfine works on this disk. Sharp, clear performances in the veinare played by the WurtemburgChamber Orchestra with JorgFaerber conducting and virtu-osi trumpeters from surround-ing cities.
PhilipsI Musici, that superb cham-
ber Orchestra of a dozen virtu-osi, is celebrating its 10th anni-versary, and Philips is helpingthem by offering their newestrelease (a brilliant collectionof Italian Baroque concerti byVivaldi, Corelli, Albinoni andManfredini) at $1.00 off theregular list price. Perform-ances are matchless. They pos-sess a unity of spirit, a smooth-ness of ensemble that is oneof the major performing mir-acles of the day. They are al-ways a delight to hear. Thealbum's a must for all Ba-roque music fans.
What looks like a dandy sel-ler (The Greig/Schumann Con-certi by Claudio Arrau and theConcertgebouw Orchestra, Doh-nanyi, conducting), is very dis-appointing. Every note is inplace but no one was inspiredthe day this recording wasmade. The recent MercurySchumann with Janis is muchfiner. Finer still is Deut-sche Grammophon's Richterand Columbia's mono -only Li-patti. And while we are at it,D.G.G.'s fairly recent Grieg/Schumann coupling with Geza
Anda is no winner, either. Theplaying is heavy-handed. TheSchumann is a very tough con-certo to bring off. You have tobe a born romantic with virtu-osity to spare-like a Richter,a Lipatti or a Rubinstein;otherwise the results can be-and often are-earthbound.
Vanguard"Hail Vanguard. Long may
you prosper." These must bethe sentiments of many musiclovers upon encountering Van-guard's new two -album record-ing of all six Bach Concertosfor two or more harpsichords, superbly recorded and magnifi-cently performed by the I So-listi di Zagreb under Janigro.
Janigro, a cellist, reallyknows how to get the stringsto articulate and to phrase. The secret of playing Bach isarticulation. If the little mo-tives with which Bach buildshis magnificent architecture insound are played correctly, then everything must be right. The spirit is great. The per-formances are swinging. Thesoloists are Anton and ErnaHeiller, Kurt Rapf and ChristaLandon. Stereo spread is par-
ticularly impressive here. It'sfun to follow the sound fromone speaker to the other asBach's tunes are tossed fromone harpsichordist to another.
At last we have the bargain -priced Woldike-directed record-ing of Haydn's oratorio "TheCreation" on Vanguard'sEveryman label.
At only $4.96, suggested listprice, it beats out all compe-tition pricewise. The perform-ance, conducted by Denmark'sMogens Wiildike is excellentlypaced, and he has the servicesof the excellent Chorus andOrchestra of the Vienna StateOpera and some superb solo-ists: Teresa Stich -Randall (theConnecticut -born soprano) andfrom Europe Anny Felber-mayer, Anton Dermota and
has a fine series of HaydnSymphony recordings by Wol-dike.

RCA Readies Burton 'Becket' LPRCA Victor has recorded an
album of the spoken word high-lights from the original filmsoundtrack of "Becket," star-ring Richard Burton and PeterO'Toole, with John Gielgud. Thealbum is scheduled for releasein August.
Peter Glenville, director of theParamount Pictures film ver-sion as well as the Broadway"Becket," is heard reciting hisown narration, written especial-ly for the RCA recording.
Glenville, remembered for hisBroadway direction of "Tchin-Tchin," "Tovarich" and "Dylan,"said: "It has been most stimulat-ing work. I have edited theoriginal soundtrack and nar-rated the story of "Becket" as a
frame work for the major scenesbetween the two stars (Burtonand O'Toole) of the film. Theoriginal tracks sound exception-ally well and the result, I think,is a most unusual and excitingentertainment."
Music SupplementMusic supplementing the
drama and narration was re-corded Live in RCA Victor'sstudios by Laurence Rosenthal, who adapted and re -orchestratedit from his original picture scoreof "Becket."
Joe Linhart, who produced the"Becket" album for RCA Victor, selected the album's contentsfrom the movie's 40,000 -footsoundtrack. The recording re-
tains the continuity of story aswell as the drama that distin-guished the Paramount produc-tion. Hal Wallis producer of thefilm, lent his enthusiastic sup-port to the RCA Victor projectfrom its inception and was in-strumental in having the origi-nal soundtrack flown to NewYork from England's Shepper-ton Studios.
Special packaging for the"Becket" album consists of adouble -flap record jacket thatcontains production stills fromthe film and a synopsis of theaction.
