Whole Life Costs - May 2017Introduction

Cost of ownership is a key factor when purchasing a new van. Front end price is important, but how much will you

get back in retained value , how much will it cost to service and repair, how economical is it? Vehicle depreciation,

servicing and repair costs (including parts and tyres) and fuel costs gives the true picture of Affordability.

The following pages demonstrate Mercedes-Benz leadership in low cost of ownership. Don’t forget this

leadership is in addition to the product advantages in other areas:

Free MobiloVan UK cover for up to 30 years•

3-year unlimited mileage vehicle warranty•

12-year anti-corrosion warranty•

The safest vans in the world•

Premium van build quality and reliability•

Specialist van dealership network•

How the Whole Life costs are calculated

The tables on the next pages detail the costs associated with ownership of the Citan, Vito and Sprinter, and

their competition.

The sources of this information are:

An independent  monitor for forecast retained values after 3 years operation.•

For Service, Maintenance and Repair costs we are using an independent survey which is updated monthly and

covers all van models produced by every manufacturer. Included in the analysis are regular servicing costs and

replacement of tyres, brake pads and discs, batteries, exhaust and clutches according to mileages – 45,000 miles

for the Citan sector, 60,000 miles for the Vito sector and 90,000 miles for the Sprinter sector

For the fuel costs we use the published claimed combined fuel consumption figures for each van and, this

month, a diesel price of 99 pence per litre excluding VAT, up one penny compared to last month.

CITAN sector Whole Life Costs/mile - May 2017 (detail on next chart)

Very small increases in SMR and diesel costs have pushed up whole life costs but by only 1%.•

Citan 109CDI Compact tops the table.•

Strong retained values reduce whole life costs for the Ford Transit Connect and VW Caddy.•

Citan models continue to score well with the lowest fuel and SMR costs.•

All the Citan 109CDI models look particularly good value.•

Higher powered Citans, Fords and VWs tend to fall towards the bottom of the table.•

Vito strengths in retained values and SMR keep it at the top of this table with the VW Transporter.•

Vito 109 and 111 (and 114 Long) have lower costs than market leader Transit Customs and the rest of the

competition. From the table over page we can see that it costs an extra £3,830 to run the Transit Custom 290

105hp compared to Vito 109CDI Compact or an extra £2,696 compared to the Vito 111CDi Long.

Taking into account engine power and load cube the Vito 109CDI Compact, 111CDI Long and 114CDI look

specially competitive.
