WPC Populations of Focus

WPC seeks to support Los Angeles County Medi-Cal beneficiaries with particular health challenges in six highly marginalized populations:

1. People experiencing homelessness2. People recently released from incarceration3. People with mental health issues4. People experiencing substance use disorder5. People with multiple medical conditions6. Women experiencing barriers to a healthy pregnancy

Definition of CHWs(Farquhar, Michael and Wiggins, 2005)

• CHWs are carefully chosen community members who participate in capacitation (empowering training) so that they can promote health in their own communities.

• Communities can be defined by race/ethnicity, geography, age, sexual orientation, disability status, other factors, or a combination of factors.

Steps in the CHW hiring process

Prepare to apply for CHW LA county job.

Apply for CHW LA county job.

If qualified and “reachable,” candidate will be invited to a panel interview.

If selected, candidate receives a conditional CHW LA county job offer that is dependent on reference check

and passing a background check

If candidate meets conditional job offer requirements, CHW participates in initial training and starts job.


Steps in the Process of Applying for an LA County Job

Step 1: Visit Los Angeles County Department of Human Resources website and create profile.https://www.governmentjobs.com/careers/lacounty

Step 2: Look for the job you wish to apply for.Step 3: Apply to job by completing the application and answering the supplemental questionsStep 4: Exam analyst will review application, and if candidate qualifies, will send a link to the applicant’s email to complete a personality inventory in the convenience of their home (if applicable). The inventory is not timed.Step 5: Test will be scored and candidate will be placed in a band from V (vet)-5. If not enough variation in scores, there are no bands (called “alternative banding.”)Step 6: Potential employer will reach out to “reachable” candidates.

Defining LA County human resources terms

• Personality inventory is an assessment of work-relevant personality traits.

• Banding is done when there is enough variation in the candidate scores. The scores are organized in bands (band v [veteran], band 1, band 2, band 3, band 4, and band 5). Hiring managers must start their process by reaching out to candidates in the highest band(s).

• Alternative banding occurs when there is not enough variation within the scores. With alternative banding, any candidate is “reachable.”

• An opportunity to express your lived experience and the communities which you are a part of.

• Writing more will not necessarily improve your score, but not writing enough can decrease your score.

• Your answers will not be scored based on your writing ability.• Your answers will be scored based on what you say and how

much detail you provide.
