UCD CHORAL SCHOLARSHIPSWHY YOU SHOULD AUDITION

viii.2017

If you are a solo singer or a keen choral singer, have the ability to read music or struggle with the dots, the UCD Choral Scholars want to hear from you!

The UCD Choral Scholars is Ireland’s leading collegiate chamber choir, made up of eighteen students from all different faculties and schools in UCD, including Law, Radiography, Architecture, Music, Arts, Medicine and Business. We are a dynamic choir and have travelled around Europe and the USA showcasing our talents on TV, radio, in concert and more recently by recording a disc for release with Signum Records (London). We sing at university events throughout the year, travel to festivals, and perform for capacity audiences at our Christmas and Spring concerts.

Keep an eye out on our Facebook page for more information on our annual programme.

How and why you should join:

We are excited about welcoming new singers into our ensemble. Auditions are held for UCD undergraduate and graduate students twice in each academic year. Please see the recruitment page on our website for details of application deadlines, or email [email protected] at any time to enquire about auditioning.

As a member of the UCD Choral Scholars, you will:

• Receive a scholarship financial reward (€750 - €1,250);• Develop your artistic talents and team-building skills;• Have the opportunity to work with professional directors and musicians;• Perform at high-profile events;• Tour with the ensemble;• Have one of the best college experiences on offer.

About the audition:

If your online application is successful you will receive a date and time for an audition. The audition takes about 10 minutes, and you will be asked to try a little sight-singing, prepare your voice line of a set choral piece (you will receive this music in advance) and sing a solo song of your choosing. It would be ideal for us to hear you sing one of the following types of songs:

• a song from a show (e.g. ‘Speak Low’ by Kurt Weill) • a folksong (e.g. ‘The Last Rose of Summer’ by Thomas Moore) • an art-song (e.g. ‘Fairest Isle’ by Henry Purcell) • an aria (e.g. ‘Lascia Ch’io Pianga’ by Handel)

The idea is to hear you singing a piece that displays a comfortable, open, relaxed sound. There will be a piano accompanist at the audition, so please remember to bring a few extra copies of your chosen sheet music to the audition. We also suggest you bring along a copy of your application. We look forward to hearing from you!
