LLLAAABBBOOORRR DDDAAAYYY: GOODBYE TO SUMMER

In  1898  Samuel  Gompers,  head  of  the  American  Federation  of  Labor,  called  Labor  Day  “the  day…that  the workers of our day may…lay down their tools of labor for a holiday…” 

Over a century later, Labor Day is seen as the last long weekend of summer.    Friends and families take vacations or gather at picnic grounds, and in their own backyards…to bid farewell to summer.      

                       

ANNUAL DISTRICT CONVENTION  

It was a busy weekend  for  those who attended the convention at  the Town & Country Hotel.   We met old  and  new  friends,  attended  educational  seminars, celebrated  victories  and  received  awards.    The Hospitality  Suites  provided  good munchies  and  grog, along with  lively music  that had many people dancing.  As  always with Kiwanians,  there were  no  “strangers”. We  came  back with  renewed  commitment  to Kiwanis’ goals along with new ideas for improvement.  While this publication  didn’t  win  first  place  in  the  newsletter competition,  second  place  provides  the  incentive  to make  the  corrections necessary  to be on  top next year.  The  first  of  those  changes  is  evident  in  the  new masthead you see above.

LOBSTER FEST 2006

  Under  Elaine  Hintlian’s  superb  management and with  the  able  assistance of  all her  committees,  the 12th Annual Lobster Fest was a great success.  The funds raised  will  be  a  healthy  contribution  to  our  $20,000 commitment  to  the  Dept.  of  Recreation  and  Parks toward the purchase of their van.   There  were  so  many  Kiwanians  involved  it’s impossible  to  name  and  give  credit  individually.   We had potato  crews,  corn  shucking  crews,  cooks,  servers, decorators,  ticket  takers,  raffle  and  silent  auction coordinators,  kiddie  area  supervisors,  vendor organizers, beer garden operators, security officers, and “floaters”  that  assisted  wherever  they  were  needed.  There were Key Clubbers, Rotary members, Boy Scouts, and ARC members, all happy to participate.   There were  arts &  crafts  booths,  climbing wall and other kids’ bounce and climb apparatus.  There was live  music!    “Jenny’s  Web”  filled  in  for  originally scheduled Cruise Control and had everyone dancing all afternoon.  In addition, one of our favorite local singing groups, “Terry & The Murmaids”, did a one hour show featuring our favorite songs of the 50’s and 60’s.   As we followed up the next day, washing all the utensils  that  were  loaned,  we  couldn’t  help  being amazed  at  the  dedication  and willingness  of  everyone involved  in making this event such a great success.   As our Gary Matloff said, “I just love this club!”  

 

KIWANIS INTERCLUBS

The  Lobster  Fest  provided  a  perfect  venue  for clubs  to  gather  and  hold  an  Interclub Meeting.    Simi Valley  President  Jim  Lightfoot  called  the  meeting  to order  at  5:30  P.M.  and  welcomed  members  from Division 25 and 42.   

Represented  were  Moorpark,  Thousand  Oaks, Calabasas,  Northridge,  Woodland  Hills,  and  Santa Susana,  Ventura  Suburban,  Santa  Barbara  Suburban, and Carpinteria.   Also present were Past Lt. Governor Alvinn Wallace,  Lt.  Governor  Paul  Campbell  and  Lt. Governor‐Elect Mike Wesener,  who  led  the  Pledge  of Allegiance.    America,  the  Beautiful  was  led  by  Nick Esser.   

The  meeting  was  then  concluded  with  the singing  of  Hail,  Kiwanis  and  everyone  adjourned  to feast on lobster dinners along with the rest of the event’s activities.

AKTION CLUB Simi Valley Kiwanis’ Aktion Club is not yet a reality, but contacts are being made and plans formulated. We enlisted the help of these ARC members at Lobster Fest to give them an opportunity to get  involved and they were a great help  in keeping the tables cleared and clean.

Good  luck  to Randy  Sundeen  on  his  run  for  a seat on the Simi Valley Unified School District Board of Education.  Residents will vote on November 7 to fill the seat.  Members of the Board, serving four year terms, are responsible  for  developing  policies  for  30  Ventura County campuses.

KIWANIS HISTORY LESSON  Kiwanis  was  created  by  a  professional organizer n med Alle  Simps  Browne.  The  first  club was  organized  in Detroit, Michigan  in  1914,  receiving  a  charter from the state of Michigan on January 21, 1915.   That day  is  regarded as  the birth date of Kiwanis.

 Browne’s  concept  for  the  new organization  included  the  exchange  of business among the members.  However, the Detroit  club  quickly  became  involved  in  their  first service project.   During  the next  five years, Kiwanians would  debate  the  basic  purpose  of  the  organization: mutual business exchange or community service. 

GETTING THE WORD OUT

Our  club  is  made  up  of  volunteers  who,  in committee environments, make our projects happen.  No one  person  is  responsible  for  everything we  do.    This includes  your  Bulletin  Editor.   My  responsibility  is  to gather  the  information  from  the  committees  and  then report  it  to  the membership.    I can’t do  this completely and  accurately  without  input  from  those  committees, and  if  I  don’t  have  the  information  there won’t  be  an article. 

The  bane  of  every  newsletter  editor  is  getting people  to  submit  information.    But  I’m  asking  again.  You  don’t  have  to  write  an  article,  just  send  me  the information in an e‐mail.  I’ll do the writing, unless you prefer to do so.

GREAT RUBBER DUCK RACE

There was no winner of the $1 Million at the Duck Race in San Diego, but prizes were awarded corresponding to the order of ducks as they entered the duck trap.  Some of the items won were: 

  1st Prize: Four (4) Rose Bowl Tickets, 2nd Prize: Four (4) VIP Tickets to the 2007 Rose Parade, 3rd Prize: Coleman Camping Package,  4th Prize: Disney Package  (3 days,2 nights)  and Collectable  Football,  5th  Prize:  Remington Bronze  sculpture  (named  and  numbered),  6th  Prize: Autographed MVP Photo of LA Dodger Steve Garvey, 7th Prize: Golf Weekend at Carlton Oaks CC, 8th Prize: Wicker  Picnic  Basket  (fully  loaded with  picnic  treats), 9th  Prize:  Heisman  Trophy  Winner  Billy  Simms Autographed  Football,  10th  Prize:  Digital  MP3 Player/Recorder.  Host  club  for  the  event,  The  Kiwanis  Club  of  Lake Murray,  thanked  everyone  who  adopted  a  duck  or ducks.  Your  generosity  helped  the  Cal‐Nev‐Ha Foundation   raise  a  sizeable  amount  of  funds  for Pediatric  Trauma  Prevention  and  Hope  For  Kids  and local charities.
