Selecting Your Final Poem for Your Wikipedia Article

In the final stage of this project, you will select a final poem from an established author for which you willcomplete the final research and analysis necessary to publish a new article on Wikipedia.

Your Wikipedia Article WILL INCLUDE the following:  An opening section giving background and general information about the poem, including the

name of the poem, the author, the date published, the book it was published in, some backgroundabout the poem and author, and a one-sentence overview of the poem and its general topic. (3-6

sentences, overall)

A section titled “Meaning” which will give a more detailed synopsis of the poem as well asprovide interpretation of the poem as a whole as well as particular lines or sections. (at least 5

pages, overall)

A section titled “References” which will list at least 2 published, reliable sources you used tosupport your synopsis and interpretation of the poem. (You will mostly be using books and online

databases to find these sources; random Websites and Wikipedia, itself will not do!)

A section titled “External Links” which will provide at least 2 links to other websites providingmore information or media related to the poet or poem.

One picture at the beginning of the article. (Found on a Creative Commons Website so that you

know you have rights to publish it for free)

Links throughout your article to other Wikipedia pages on your poet, places mentioned, poeticelements, and any other relevant people, places, things, or ideas.

Before deciding with which poem you will complete your study, be sure you have established the following:

There is NOT ALREADY A WIKIPEDIA ARTICLE FOR THE POEM.

o  Visit www.wikipedia.org and search for your poem title to see if an article already exists.

The Poem and/or its Poet is WELL KNOWN enough to have some previous research and analysis

published about it.

o  Since Wikipedia will not keep an article without reliable sources, make sure your poem was published in

a physical book (not just online) by a poet who has published a lot.

The Poem and/or its Poet is OLD ENOUGH to have been discussed or described in other research.

o  Since the older the poem, the easier it will be to find relevant, reliable resources, check that the poemwas published at least 5 years ago.

AS A GENERAL RULE . . . The poems from the books provided in class are BY FAR the most likely to

be appropriate for creating a new article on Wikipedia. Be VERY CAUTIOUS about trying to write your

article on a poem from any other source (especially one you just found online).

In the spaces below, Write your FIRST and SECOND choices for poems that MEET THE

REQUIREMENTS LISTED ABOVE:
