rom time to time as VP, I fill in for our President Jim Falgout when needed, so this month I have the opportunity to welcome you to our latest issue of Slipstream.

With summer behind us and the days getting cooler, you will notice that the Maverick Region calendar is heating up. There is a Time Trial on the 18th and a Driver’s Education on the 24th and 25th. A Sunday Drive on the 25th will include a fun route that arrives during the Drivers’ Education at MotorSport Ranch, where you will be able to observe and learn all about the DE program and even take a few laps around the track at a comfortable speed that will certainly get you hooked!

Each month we have two lunch meetups where we have a casual get together in different spots around the DFW area to mingle and talk about -- what else? Our Porsches! If you haven’t attended one of these lunch-es yet you should really try to make it to one or all. They are typically held in Lewisville, Richardson and Southlake. I always meet someone new and the food is always great!

To see all of the Maverick Region events in detail, our club calendar at mavpca.org is always up to date, in fact the best thing to do is to click on the “subscribe” button on the calendar page and you will always have the most up-to-date events right on your mobile device or computer.

This is also the time of year when we take nomina-tions for our upcoming officer elections. Every year we elect a President, Vice President, Treasurer, and Sec-retary. If you are interested in any of these positions, please send an email to [email protected]. A ballot will be available in next month’s Slipstream, and voting will take place at this year’s Annual Celebration in November.

Speaking of the Annual Celebration, you may not be familiar with this new event. The Annual Celebra-tion is actually not a new event at all -- in fact, it is a new version of one of the oldest events in the Maverick Region: Founder’s Day. This year’s Annual Celebration will be an event not to be missed, located in the hip NYLO Hotel in Las Colinas. This is a celebration of our club’s history and a big party to reflect on the year. There is also a silent auction that is always chock full of fantastic items that you will decide you must have. Also celebrated is the newest tradition in our club which is the annual photo contest. This is truly an event that is not to be missed.

As you may have noticed by now with all the activities that we put on around here, there are many great volun-

teers that make our club so special. We always need one more, and a great way for you to get involved is to reach out to our Volunteer coordinator Jim Gallegos at [email protected]. I promise that Jim will find a great spot for you.

MAV OF THE MONTHJoe McGlohen has been a member of PCA for 31

years. Over the years he has helped in many ways, in-cluding most notably rallyemaster and safety chair. He had retired from his regular volunteer duties a few years ago, but when Bob Benson passed away suddenly last year, he quickly stepped up to fill in until a new chair could be found. Since then he has improved safety at our events and has begun training other members of his committee in hopes a new chair will result. He wants new, younger blood involved. For all that you have done and contin-ue doing, we thank you, Joe!

2016 Maverick Region Board - Officers and Chairs President Jim Falgout [email protected]

Jim joined Maverick Region in August,

2008. He drives a 2003 996, which is

the third Porsche he has owned. Jim

enjoys attending Maverick Region

social and driving events.

Vice President David Robertson C 617-797-0516 [email protected]

David fell in love with the Porsche 911 when, as a child, he would have his parents stop by the old Forest Lane Porsche in Dallas so he could dream of someday owning one. He bought his first Porsche 911 in 2011. He and his wife Tracy enjoy being active members in the Maverick Region.

Secretary Wendy Shoffit C 972-977-9821 [email protected]

Wendy and husband James joined Maverick Region in 1997, when their daughter was only 9 months old. Jasmine is now 18. They own 3 Porsches including a 1978 911SC as a dedicated racecar, which she enjoys autocrossing. Her daily driver is a 2016 Cayman GT4.

Treasurer Richard Solomon C 903-530-8281 [email protected]

Richard joined Maverick Region in 2012 when he fulfilled a 30+ year dream to own his first (of many) 911, a 2009 Silver Carrera! Although fairly new to the club, he is excited about being more involved and meeting more Porsche fanatics!

he meeting began at 7:04 pm, with Vice President David Robertson stand-ing in for President Jim Falgout. David thanked

Social Chair Tracy Robertson for adjusting to an emergency location change. Presenting for Treasurer Richard Solomon, the region has about $126K in the bank. We will begin invoicing Slipstream advertis-ers as well as sponsors of the fall DE events. Richard would like to have a Boot Campaign fundraiser at one of the Drivers’ Education events.

Social Chairs Tracy Robertson and Phyllis Gallegos announced that the event formerly known as Founders’ Day will be called “Mav-erick Region Annual Celebration” and will be at the NYLO Hotel in Las Colinas. It will be more casual than in the past, hoping to increase attendance. There will be food sta-tions instead of a formal sit-down meal. We will still have a silent auc-tion with quality items. We will try to have a photo contest. Teri Davis suggested arranging for a photo keepsake.

Volunteer Chair Jimmy Gallegos said that initially the volunteer re-sponse was strong, but has dropped off. After soliciting input from mem-bers, he will be more detailed about future volunteer responsibilities.

Advertising Chair Cindy Bliss has to step down because of work conflicts. We thanked her for her service. Bill Kruder will continue in her place.

Nominating Committee Chair John Hamilton reported that two out of four existing officers are will-ing to continue their roles and will check on the others. As Membership Chair, he stated that membership continues to grow. We’re now at an all-time high of 2582 total members. As an employee of a local dealer-ship, he mentioned that displaying our new marketing digital photo frames has resulted in our region brochures being picked up.

Editor Jim Hirsch says we are printing 1900 copies per month. Issues remain at 40 pages and 55% is advertising, which can increase if

desired and still stay within our post office limit. There was a misprint in the July issue, but Ussery Printing fixed it and printed a limited supply of corrected copies for collectors. The revised PDF was emailed to all members. He will get pricing on moving to full color. He discontin-ued the photos of the month, citing the themes limited photographers. He will work with Bill Orr to contin-ue a photo feature in the future. Bill Kruder will begin a new featured article entitled “Kruder’s Cars and Conversation.”

Bill Kruder has been a member for 20 years, but is now stepping up to help out with advertising. He has been using the Google doc that was created for advertisers and has con-tacted most by phone. He has the time and ability to do it and enjoys it. His goal is to reach out four times per year. Ad rates might need adjust-ing after he researches comparable publications.

Rally Chair Don Sebert has nixed a summer event, but reported that the next one will be near Hallow-een, complete with costume contest. He hopes for a fun event and a big turnout. He is looking for input on good start or finish locations. On behalf of Monthly Dinner Social Chair Stephanie Ho, he reported that there were about 120 people at the Hard Eight BBQ and everyone had a great time. She will continue working on future locations and great deals on drinks.

Guest Mark Pitaressi is a new member who looks forward to get-ting involved. This is his second board meeting, but has attended several events already.

Historian Charlie Davis reported that the photo workshop unfortu-nately died because of a lack of suit-able location and declining interest. He wants someone else to take the reins for the photo contest. Several in attendance offered to help, but we need an overall contest chair.

Hope Shelter Advocate Bill Mid-dleton continues planning activities to support and celebrate them on the tenth anniversary of their new facility. He will ask for donations at

our September DE (during parade laps) with the focus on linens, espe-cially for the upcoming winter. He is also hoping to have a good turnout at the Hope Christmas Party in De-cember.

PCA Tours Chair Tom Martin has a drive planned from Duncanville to the September DE. He is also look-ing to support Hope and is asking participants to bring a $25 Walmart gift card. The October drive will be to Rancho Sereno where we will again have good use of the space for catering.

Wendy Shoffit (for Carey Spreen) requested we proceed with the ap-proved Slipstream archival project. All present were in favor. The mo-tion had been passed prior, so no vote was needed. She also reported that Parade in Jay Peak was a great success, particularly for Carey who trophied in three out of the four primary competitive events! The 2017 Parade will be in Spokane, Washington and 2018 will be closer, in Lake of the Ozarks, Missouri. We have two DE events coming up (Sept and Oct) and a Club Race (with solo-only DE) in Nov. Based on feedback from the national web-site competition, a team of people are now making significant improve-ments to the region website. Stay tuned. Lastly, presenting for Auto-cross Chair Mark Schnoerr, the July 24 event was well attended, with 15 Porsche participants and a few more spectators. See article and results elsewhere.

Bill Orr presented a report on the success of the use of the digi-tal picture frames. He wants three more to continue the program. Af-ter some discussion, a motion was made to spend up to $660 for that purpose. Don Sebert seconded and the motion passed. Bill also showed a presentation about the possible logo change and presented other options. After a bit of discussion, we decided to have a survey on Face-book or SurveyMonkey to solicit a public vote on the favorite.

Lastly, the Mav of the Month is Joe McGlohen for his efforts as Safety Chair.

orsches are fast. Currently, Porsche en-gines, residing in either the front or back of the vehicle, typically supply anywhere from 250 hp to 560 hp to the rear wheels at any

given time. This of course, depends on year, make, and model. The 2016 911 Turbo, for example, boasts an impressively powerful 520 hp, while the 2016 Boxster range “only” tops out at around 375 hp for the Boxster Spyder. Miraculously, each year these imposing horse-power ranges increase. Take a sneak peek at the 2017 roster, and you will see that the 2017 911 Turbo claims up to 580 horses, an increase of nearly 60 hp! One can only imagine what the ranges will be in the 2020s.

For most classic Porsches however, those produced before 1989 that is, power numbers are more humbly limited to the 100-300 hp range. My tiny little 1974 914 2.0 would be lucky to break 100 hp, and my 1987 944 only comes up to just shy of 150 hp. Classic Porsche owners know that it is not totally about the horsepower; instead we focus on the handling of the car—for which Porsche has remained second to none!

Many of my friends do not own Porsches. Most of them drive Korean and Japanese daily beaters, and can only dream about making a sports car purchase. When these friends do discuss what vehicles they would love to have in the garage, the majority of the time only American Muscle cars are suggested. “It’s all about the power,” they say. As a response, I just smile and nod because I know that a sprightly little 911 SC can out-track any Mustang, Ca-maro, or Vette!

It is the combination of both the raw horsepower of the engine and the nimble-ness of the suspension which truly make our cars great ve-hicles to own and drive. This being said, I still get asked all the time about what one can do to increase the power of a Porsche. To be completely honest, this is not an easy feat to accomplish, as there are many different options available, and many differ-ent routes one can take to increase the power supplied

to his or her wheels. There are DME chips, MFI boost-ers, and countless build sheets for carburetors which can all be purchased online, albeit at lofty prices. Exhaust system upgrades, custom heat exchangers, and over-the-counter ignition units likewise increase a car’s power output. But I find that the best way to squeeze a few more horses out of your car is to keep it clean, light, and run-ning at optimal per-formance.

This begins with regular maintenance. Changing the oil, replacing the air filter, replacing the distributor, replacing worn out spark plugs, and using the right fuel all contribute to the health and vitality of the powertrain. Additionally, one can increase a car’s acceleration and improve shift-ing by replacing/upgrading the vehicle’s clutch, adjust-ing the clutch cable, and replacing worn out bushings

in the clutch cable system. More invasive measures, like fine-tuning the cam timing, re-adjusting the engine’s valves, and completely tearing down the engine will similarly in-crease horsepower yields.

No matter what one has de-cided to do, if anything has been done at all, it is impor-tant to note that all of this power and additional speed need two additional things: a strong suspension and ade-quate stopping power. No sense in having a 500 hp car if you cannot keep it on the road! Stay tuned for the next couple of installments which will look at these other areas and show how we can continue to improve the performance of our vehicles without break-ing the bank . . . . Wrench on Mavs!

TPMS Trivia: Let Your Porsche Tell You Its Tire PressuresBy John Hamilton, Region Past President and Membership Chair

s you already know, tire pressures are im-portant. But you may not already know that if you own a recent-model Porsche, those pressures are accurately adjustable without

the use of a tire pressure gauge. The tool to use is the tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) that you paid for when you bought your Porsche. Not only will it warn you when one or more of your tires are under-inflated; it will also help you set your tire pressures to the correct amount, including compensation for temperatures.

The pressures listed on your Porsche’s door sill and in the owner’s manual are only correct at an outside air temperature of 68 degrees F. If it is hotter than that outside, and/or if you have driven your Porsche, those numbers are no longer appropriate.

Also, most recent-model Porsches have different pressure choices for “Comfort” and/or “Full Load.” These selections can be found in the instrument clus-ter on the screen that shows the tire pressures for each of your four tires. Find that screen, press the select le-ver or button, scroll down, and either select (checked box) or de-select (un-checked box) the “Comfort” and/or “Full Load” options according to your needs. If

you change the “Comfort” or “Full Load” settings, most Porsches then need to be driven for a couple of miles at speeds greater than 15 mph for the system to “learn” the new settings.

Once you are satisfied with your settings, it is now time to adjust the air pressures to match (or slightly exceed) the Fill Info numbers displayed on your instru-ment cluster. Once again, find the screen that shows the tire pressures for your four tires. Select that screen then select “Fill Info.” On this screen you will see + or - numbers by each of your four tires. You should fill each of your tires to 0, +1, or +3 (there is no 2). This is regardless of the outside or tire temperatures, as the system takes that into consideration. Personally, I always set mine to either +1 or +3 since all tires lose air over time.

That’s it! An overdue explanation of TPMS, how it works, and how you can avoid spending the $10 or $20 on a tire pressure gauge. As a bonus, you’ll find that you have fewer warning indicators coming on for LOW TIRE PRESSURE since you have now set them correctly based upon their actual temperatures.

Now get back to driving your Porsches!

Kruder’s Cars & Conversations By Bill Kruder, Region Advertising Chair Images Courtesy of the Author

ot many of you know me, but I have been a 20-year member of the PCA. I refer to myself

as the newest 20-year member. Not until recently did I get involved and find out that there are some pretty interesting people in this club. And with nearly 1900 members, there must be some good stories out there. So here it is the first of a se-ries of “interviews” that I would like to share with you. Bob Hagestad, 1964 356C owner,

PCA member since 1960

WK: Bob, you have been a member of PCA longer than almost anyone in Maverick Region. What year did you join PCA and why?

BH: Well, really I kind of joined by accident. My dad had a VW deal-ership in Cheyenne, Wyoming and he wanted to open another. How-ever, VW said that they would let him have another but it had to be in Denver. Then as an extra incen-tive they said, “We will give you a Porsche dealership also.” Needless to say, we moved. Once we opened, our mechanic said, “We need to race one of these.” And we did! We took one off the showroom floor and took the SCCA driving school, which I guess at the same time signed us up with PCA.

WK: So this was 1960 then?BH: Yes, I think in the fall. Fun-

ny thing was once we had taken the car off the showroom floor we sim-ply returned it when we were fin-

ished, like nothing had happened. Not sure I could get away with that today.

WK: Wow! And to think PCA was only around for five years at that point, and Maverick Region wouldn’t even be founded until 1962.

BH: Well like I said, we joined because we had just acquired the dealership and thought it might be fun to do a little racing. Of course I had no idea back then I would have moved here years later.

WK: So you come from a car-guy family then?

BH: I do. I didn’t mention that before my dad started selling VWs, he had a Lincoln-Mercury dealer-ship. I actually worked as a salesman for him. I think that was 1957, but I was terrible. Think he told me I needed to find another profession.

WK: Well how did that work out for you?

BH: Funny how things work out, but about 1968-69, VW and Porsche came back and said “We want you to separate VW from Porsche.” And to do that they would add in Audi so we could have a Porsche+Audi store. Apparently my dad hadn’t given up on me yet, so he worked out a deal in which he would sell VWs if I would take the other “slower selling” cars. So that’s what we did. We opened up a new deal-ership.

WK: So how did you end up in Dal-las?

BH: About 1987, VW asked if I would help establish a dealership here. I didn’t want to move, so for about three to four years I would go back and forth. Then about 1991-92, I took over Metro VW in Irving and was an active partner ‘til I re-tired in 2011.

WK: Now tell me what was your first Porsche?

BH: Really don’t have just one “first” because we would drive which ever we felt like off the show-room floor; kind of brings a smile to my face to think about that.

WK: What do you own now?BH: I have a 1964 Dolphin Gray

356C.WK: Is this one off the showroom

floor?BH: Oh no, I bought this one in

1984 from a couple in Denver who had gone to Europe, bought the car in Paris, and drove it on vaca-tion over there. They then brought it back and enjoyed it for another 19 years. They put 80,000 miles on it.

WK: How many miles does it have on it now?

BH: I’ve only put another 9,000 miles on it since 1984.

WK: What an incredible journey you have been on, with some of the best cars in the world.

BH: Not bad I guess. But you don’t want to hear about my racing?

WK: So you continued to race? Not just club races?

BH: Oh, that was only the beginning. We bought the 904; I think only two were here in the States. We raced it in ‘64 at the 250-mile Daytona Continental, in which we finished

fifth. This was really the start of my professional racing, actually getting paid.

WK: We’ve talked about an RSR – how did that come about?

BH: In ‘71 several of us went to Monte Carlo and stopped at the Porsche factory to look at a new car they were trying to sell; they had to sell fifty before they could race them. As it turned out it was the ‘72 RSR. I think I managed to get them to sell it to me for about $18K.

WK: And how did that work out?BH: I brought it home and

wrecked it in a practice run. So Peter Gregg had another car as a spare but it was painted in his livery so he sold it to me.

WK: Peter Gregg like in Brumos?BH: That would be the guy

alright. Trouble was, we couldn’t race in his livery, so we bought what is like floral kitchen contact paper and covered up his scheme. That was at Elkhart Lake.

WK: How long did you race the RSR?

BH: We raced the RSRs from about ‘73-‘77. I had some pretty good drivers driving for me and with me.

WK: Anyone we would know?

BH: Let’s see: Skip Barber, Jerry Jolly, John Paul, and Hur-ley Haywood. I might

be forgetting someone, but these guys were good.

WK: Something tells me there is more to the story . . .

BH: Yep! Then about ‘76-‘77 (I can’t remember for sure), we bought our 934 turbo. Think we paid about $50K back then for it, which was a lot, trust me. Hurley Haywood drove for me in all the one-hour races and I co-drove with him in the endurance races; we had some pretty good success in it.

WK: And there’s the 935 too?BH: Well it was really a 934 that

was converted to a 935, which they referred to as a 934.5 in those years. That was in ‘78 when we started at the 24 Hours of Daytona but DNF’ed. But then we came back at Sebring and led the race until we lost our brakes, but managed to come in second.

Wow, and to think that I was only coming over to talk about some guy’s “tub” car!

fter a welcome summer break, the Maverick Region Sunday Drive program resumes its

schedule with a drive to Motor Sport Ranch later this month. As icing on the cake, drivers will be al-lowed onto the track for a series of parade laps.

The drive is scheduled for Sunday, September 25, at 9:00 am. It will start in the parking lot of Costco, 250 E Hwy 67, in Dun-canville, and end at MotorSport Ranch in Cresson. Drivers wishing to take to the track for parade laps will be required to present a $25.00 Walmart gift card to the Gridmas-ter as a charitable contribution to the Huffaker-Hughes Hope House. You can learn more about this very worthy club charity that our club supports on the next page.

If you’ve never been to Motor Sport Ranch (MSR), it is one of the many “country club” tracks that have sprouted up all over the coun-try that cater specifically to per-formance automobile owners. It’s primarily a track for club members to have fun and go as fast as their comfort level allows. The Maverick Region holds most of its Drivers’ Education events there. In fact, a Maverick DE will be taking place the same day that we’ll be there. We’ll take to the track during the DE lunch break.

Speaking of which: lunch will also be available, provided by Del Norte Tacos for $10. Just indicate in your RSVP if you plan to have lunch at the track.

Now, I know what you’re think-ing: “What exactly is a parade lap?” A parade lap is not so slow as to emulate a vehicle towing a parade float, nor is it an open invitation to go flat out around the course. Con-sider a parade lap as a “safety car” lap. Not too slow, not too fast.

As a final note, you may have no-ticed the title of this article is “PCA Tours”, rather than “Sunday Drive.” That’s because we’ve decided to change the name of the program. Dispensing with the Sunday Drive moniker in lieu of PCA Tours aligns us with similar programs of other PCA Regions. Plus, several of our drives are held on a Saturday rather than a Sunday.

So in the future, look for notices of PCA Tours in this format:FORMAT

PCA Tours“Tour Title” – Tour Description

EXAMPLEPCA Tours“Everyone Loves a Parade” – Off

to MotorSport Ranch

Also, Bill Orr is now Co-Chair of the Maverick PCA Tours program. Bill is actively involved in several club activities, and has demonstrat-ed proficiency in all of them.

As always, attendees are not re-quired to participate in the parade laps, so if you desire, you could head straight home after the Tour on your own route.

If you plan on attending the Tour, it is imperative that you RSVP us before the Tour. Just shoot an e-mail to [email protected] with a simple “I will be attending (by myself, with my wife, with a friend, etc.)” and you’re in. When you RSVP, it gives us an accurate count to supply to the proprietor of the destination. Plus, three days in ad-vance, you will receive an e-mail with the following attachments: a Garmin .gdb file of the route, a route overview, and turn-by-turn instructions.

Hope to see you and your Porsche at the Tour and on the track!

You get to drive the track, not walk!

s has been mentioned in an earlier Slipstream article, 2016 marks ten years since the new

Hope Shelter was completed and dedicated. To mark this occasion, the Maverick Charity Committee has been working on some special activities to benefit the Shelter, and help newer Mavericks, who may not be aware of the charitable work the Region does, become familiar, and hopefully, involved!

One group of items the Shel-ter regularly needs is bedding and bath items: consumables like shampoo, soap, toothpaste; and more durable goods, like bedding (sheets, pillows, blankets, etc.) and bath items like towels, washcloths, and so forth.

At one time, we were looking into getting such items from a

hotelier supply company – those items tend to be more durable, and less expensive, when bought in bulk. The issue is – as one would expect – they’re pretty plain.

The clients of the Shelter are typically women fleeing an abusive situation, and often with children. We felt that it would be a good idea – and provide less of an “institutional” setting – if they had bedding and bath goods that were more lively and colorful. In the case of the kids, it’s hard enough having to leave home on very short notice to get away from an abusive situation, much less to go live in an unknown place. Being able to pick out bedding with your favorite movie or superhero character gives them something they can call their own in an otherwise unfamiliar setting.

To that end, the charity com-mittee is teaming up with both the Drivers’ Education group and the Touring group to collect Walmart gift cards so that the shelter can buy these necessities for their clients. The DE and Tour events are both the same weekend – Sept. 24-25 – and all you have to do to help is get to your local Walmart, and pick up a $25 gift card. It’s that simple, and your generosity will go a long way to helping the Shelter with these needs!

Cards from DE participants will be collected during the midday break on Saturday, and cards from the Tour participants will be col-lected before the charity laps are run, so get to your local Walmart, grab a card, and help Hope con-tinue its mission of helping others in need!

ifty-four years ago our Maverick Region was founded. We had only 13 charter members, and the 911 was still another year away from being introduced. Wow, we’ve come a long

way! Today we have nearly 1900 primary members. Every fall since the 1960s we have gathered and

celebrated what those original members started for us. While we are quickly approaching fall in DFW, I know the heat index was 109 F today; it’s time to start plan-ning for this historic and special event during which we celebrate the past and present!

This year our Annual Celebration will be held Sat-urday, November 5, 2016. Most of you remember this event as our Founders’ Day Banquet, but this year we have not only a name change but some other changes too. We think you’ll find it to be the best of the past combined with the best of who we’ve become.

In the past it’s been cocktails and socializing with other club mem-bers, and included a silent auction and, more recently, a photo con-test. Then, we enjoyed a sit-down dinner, while dressed in our finest “duds.” Many of us who have attended have had a great time, but we be-gan thinking, maybe it’s time to make this a more casual affair, including softening up the venue. Thus, the name change and NO mention of the phrase “Formal or Black Tie Optional”.

Let’s get back to why this event is even called a Cel-ebration. After fifty-four years we have a lot to celebrate in the Maverick Region:

• Friendships built around a shared passion for our cars.

• A full calendar of varied events that allow oppor-tunities for everyone to participate.

• The contribution of many volunteers, making sure our events are well organized, safe, and fun!

• A generous membership that eagerly supports our charity, the Huffaker-Hughes Hope House.

So what can you look forward to at this year’s An-nual Celebration?

• An upbeat venue, the casual and chic NYLO Ho-tel, centrally located in Las Colinas.

• Time to mix and mingle, catch up with old friends, and make new ones.

• Our third annual Photo Contest - more details to come soon.

• Election of our offi-cers for the calendar year 2017.

• Presentation of the Richard F. Selcer Me-morial Award, given to one member each year for outstanding contributions to the region and inspiration to others to do like-wise.

• The Silent Auction, where you can get great deals on Porsche accessories and apparel, club driving events, jew-elry, dining, car repair/maintenance, and more! And don’t forget, all proceeds go to Huffaker-Hughes Hope House in Mineral Wells, a home for victims of domestic violence.

So save the date, November 5, and be on the lookout for more details.

Note to Photographers: New Photo Submission Process By Bill Orr Images Courtesy of the Author

tarting next month we are going to intro-duce the Porsche of the Month contest. Each month we will highlight a Maverick Region member’s Porsche in Slipstream and

on our social media sites. All photos submitted will be included in online albums on our various sites so you will still be able to share your photos with your fellow members even if you do not win.

The best way to submit your photos is through the Maverick Region Flickr Group. You can access it here: https://www.flickr.com/groups/maverickpca/

It does require a Flickr account, but that is free and only takes a few minutes to set up. We chose Flickr be-cause it allows us to streamline the production process and to download the highest quality version for print-ing and online use. It also has a phone app for both iOS and Android phones that allows you to take new photos or upload existing ones. In order to use the phone apps with the group you must first have a Flickr account and join the Maverick Region Flickr group.

Flickr Phone Steps:1. Sign up.2. Log in.3. Select the Groups Tab.4. Select the Maverick Region Group.5. Join if you have not already done so.6. Click the Photo icon at the bottom in the middle.

have been autocross-ing for a few years now

. . . . since 1998. I started out not knowing ANY-

thing and DNF’ed (went off course) three out of my first four runs at my first event. I’ve improved since then. I’ve got a couple of region wins, some national Parade tro-phies and a few Parade Ladies’ Top Times of Day. I’ve had some prac-tice. But nearly all of those were in a 1978 911 SC and NONE of them have made me money. Now race prepared, “Ebony” is a little more challenging to get out to local events (race trailer, sticky tires, yad-da yadda yadda). We’ve WANTED to compete, but just haven’t done so in the past few years. Now that we have the Cayman GT4, we have REALLY been wanting to go play. However, timing and unfortunate circumstances have kept us away until this past July 24, when I came back early from a trip and thought, “Hey, why not?” So, James gracious-ly spent his Saturday cleaning the car, swapping tires, and getting it ready for Sunday’s event at Lone Star Park.

We’d never driven with Equipe Rapide (ER) before and weren’t sure what to expect. When we got there, we found our way to where we were supposed to park and im-mediately saw people we knew (Ed Mayo, Julia Underwood, Carey Spreen, Matthew Cords, and the

Schnoerrs). We also saw “other car” autocrossers who have driven with us and who we remembered from our time “way back when.” We found the timing trailer, checked in, and got our work assignments. We got the car emptied out, tech’ed, and ready for action. After the brief drivers’ meeting, we (run group B) worked our corner, while run group A drove and run group C rested. We were so very glad to be the first out to work, because the day just got hotter! This reminded us why Maverick Region stopped autocrossing in July and August!

Anyway, after working, James and I got our chance to put the GT4 through its paces. Wow wow wow! I am continually impressed by that car! Now, we just need to be better DRIVERS in that car to really show what it can do. There is a sig-nificant difference between auto-crossing a rear-engined car versus a mid-engined car. We got quite a few runs because of timing errors, but that just added to the fun. James was the winner this time between the two of us by just 0.3 seconds.

{Note the use of “just” instead of “a whopping” if I’d have beaten him.) One of the cool things that ER does is allow passengers during runs. PCA’s insurance doesn’t al-low it, but theirs does. Ask Ed about his ride with James on course. Fun stuff!

So after we ran, it was our “rest” time, so we headed to lunch with Carey Spreen. We could have just left for the day like others had done, but we wanted to see what their awards ceremony looked like. So, after lunch we came back to watch. It turned out that because of the PAX calculations (aka “black magic”), we ended up doing well enough to earn actual cash monies! James won our Porsche class and a PAX payout, totaling $15 (paid for lunch) AND a t-shirt. I won a total of $40 for doing well in the ladies

class and (I think) the Porsche class. I should pay more attention next time to WHY I won, but I was just excited to get money! My entry fee was $35, so I netted $5 COLD.HARD.CASH! That paid for our celebratory Frosties on the way home.

So, not only did we have fun au-tocrossing in our awesome car, love spending time with our amazing friends, but we also experienced the joy of the ER PAX payouts! We can’t wait to have fun again! Come join us!

Around the Bend...By Jim Hirsch, Managing Editor

ovelist C. S. Lewis wrote, “The future is something which everyone reaches at the rate of 60 minutes an hour, whatever he does, whoever he is”. I

know for our members it feels like the future is arriving even more quickly than that when they are driving their Porsche.

But, leaving the 0-60 time or MSR lap time out of the equation, our future as the Maverick Region of the PCA reminds us again and again that it is not the cars that are so important. The important thing is the people. So, try to slow down the arrival of the future a bit and look around you at the next Maverick event and realize that each and every member has a story. And then, make it a point to find out more about that story.

That is what I try to accomplish with each issue of Slipstream. How well that intention is fulfilled is entirely up to you, our Maverick members. Please make it a pri-ority to consider sharing your story via an article and photographs and sending your ideas to me at [email protected]. Or, if you hear of a good story from an-other club member, encourage them to send it to me.

Speaking of member stories, I was remiss in the August issue with the author attribution in the article summarizing the Autos in the Park event. Andy Kay, our Region Concours Chair, provided Bill Orr with all of the information and results from the event and should have been listed as a co-author. I apologize for that miss on my part.

Moving to the future (at 60 minutes an hour), this September issue of Slipstream introduces you to two on-going story features.

The initial installment of Kruder’s Cars & Conversa-tions is featured on page 12. Bill Kruder will interview one of our Maverick members each month and provide the resulting story for your reading enjoyment.

At the same time, you will get the opportu-nity to “meet” a member whom you may not know and learn a bit more about them and their Porsche and personal history. In this issue, as you read about Bob’s colorful history, you might also be interested in learning more about his racing exploits by visiting http://www.racingsportscars.

com/driver/results/Bob-Hagestad-USA.html.As promised in the August issue, Bill Orr is provid-

ing a detailed explanation of how to share photos via our club Flickr site with his article on page 28. With so many of our members taking photos at all of our events, this now promises to be a very effective way to capture those stories in images. Bill will use your sub-missions to select a Porsche of the Month photo that we will highlight in each issue.

Looking at our Maverick calendar, we have a busy fall ahead of us with a multitude of club events. Please participate in all that interest you and write a story about your experience! In particular, look for more information about our upcoming Halloween Rally in the next issue and save the date as noted below.
