William Hill Leavitt son of William Jenkins Leavitt and Elizabeth Hill Leavitt was born September 17, 1889 in Cardston, Alberta

and was raised on a farm in Leavitt, Alberta. In 1915, William enlisted in

the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force with several other men from

the Cardston area. They underwent basic training in Calgary, Alberta and

were granted several leaves to visit home. While on leave William married

Ms. Lynn Davis April 21, 1916. On June 22, 1916, still a newlywed, William

and all the men in his Battalion left Medicine Hat to join the 10th Battalion

in England. In early April, 1917, the Canadians attacked and captured Vimy

Ridge with the 10th Battalion being in the thick of the fight. William was

wounded April 9, 1917 and on his way to a dressing station when a shell blast

overtook him and he was killed instantly. Private Leavitt was 27 years old

when he was killed. He is remembered with Honour at La Targette British

Cemetery, Neuville-St. Vaast, Pas De Calais, France. At the going down of the

sun and in the morning we will remember them.
