    ` A wind turbine is a rotary device that extracts energy

    horizontal or a vertical axis, the former being both older

    and more common.

    ` Horizontal-axis windturbines (HAWT) have themain rotor shaft (2) andelectrical generator (7) atthe top of a tower (15), andmust be pointed into thewind.

    Small turbines are pointed bya simplewind vane (10),while large turbines generallyuse a wind sensor coupledwith a servo motor.

    Most have a gearbox (6),

    which turns the slowrotation of the blades (1)into a quicker rotation thatis more suitable to drive anelectrical generator.
