Project

The W2 Wind-Wave Basin - a unique facility equipped with a high-performance

rotating wind machine over a wave basin. The machine simulates extreme wind wave conditions,

representing some of the worst storms possible anywhere on earth at 1:50 scale. A one of a kind facility.

Challenge The challenge was to bring this project in on time and on budget; that meant redesigning some of the

components without compromising quality. University of Maine targeted the rotating open-jet wind

tunnel as an opportunity to get creative, redesign, improve costs and maintain quality.

Solution In early discussions, University of Maine worked with AMD Fabrication brainstorming possibly scenarios

on a better design. University of Maine felt confident that AMD Fabrication demonstrated the expertise

and offered sound fabricating solutions and options to get the job in on time and on budget. Working

together University of Maine and AMD Fabrication engineers went through several designs scenarios to

get the wind tunnel fabrication they were looking for: on budget!

Results Now AMD Fabrication was on the clock. This was a high profile job that needed completion to meet

deadlines and ribbon cutting events already scheduled. University of Maine felt confident with AMD

Fabrication because they contributed to the design, resolved any potential production issues upfront

and knew what they could and couldn’t do. AMD Fabrication stepped up to meet that challenge,

fabricated as designed and delivered on time. The ribbon cutting ceremony went off without a hitch.
