Summertime has descended upon us in all of its glory! This is my

favorite time of year in BC wine country. The grapevines are lush, the farms are bursting with incredible fruits and vegetables, the sun is shining and, well, and it just feels like one big, never-ending party. Our July/August edition is all about having #FUN as you can see by our cheeky and colourful cover. Does that typeface look familiar? (Page 52 tells the story). Wine country has tons of amazing events to attend over the next two months and I recommend attending as many of them has possible. We love that you are drinking lots of BC wine, but we would love it even more if you made time to visit the beautiful wineries to meet the incredible people behind the labels. And don’t forget popping into gorgeous Legend Distilling for a stiff drink-we are not just about wine at Food & Wine Trails Magazine! Now that we have made the introductions through the stories within, it’s up to you

to go and visit them. We have also offered touring ideas so that you can plan by region so get out there and have a ball. Oh, and please tell them I said hello and that Food & Wine Trails Magazine sent you. Remember to shop local and support your local Farmers Markets. Have a delicious summer!

Monte Creek Ranch Winery became the latest addition to the growing Thompson

Valley wine scene with the opening in June of a spectacular building on the TransCanada Highway, near the junction with Highway 97 on Miner’s Bluff Road. Constructed on a promontory that looks northward over the TransCanada to one of the winery’s two vineyards, if offers jaw-dropping panoramic views. There was no need for general manager Erik Fisher and his wife Danett, wine shop manager, to create stories for the new enterprise. Monte Creek Ranch already has a cattle and honeybee operation, and the Thompson Valley is steeped in history. What other winery can boast that Billy Miner, the famous “Gentleman Bandit”, robbed a train on their property? He escaped with the princely sum of $15.50!

Now a 1,200-acre property on what was long known as Ducks Ranch, the Sidhu family, nursery owners and blueberry farmers in Mission, BC, purchased Monte Creek Ranch in 2009. The land looked promising for grapes, and the first vintage in 2014 has confirmed the potential. The unique and lesser-known cool climate grapes are already producing well, as are better known vinifera varieties like Riesling and Chardonnay.Visitors should not expect an intimidating wine experience. Monte Creek Ranch strives to be sincere, down to earth yet proud of its state of the art winery, and devoid of ego. After all, a snooty winery experience in the midst of country where cowboys still saddle up for cattle drives just wouldn’t fit, and that’s just fine with Erik.“Our goal is to produce approachable, easy drinking wine that over delivers on quality for the price,” he says. And if Hands Up Red and Hands Up White, named for the Billy Miner escapade, are any indication, Monte Creek Ranch is well on its way. The white blend is perfectly balanced, with enough acid to pair with food but light and smooth enough to enjoy on its own out on the patio. Melon, honey, citrus and orange blossom aromas are enough to make the toughest hombre swoon. Hands Up Red is a blend of four grape varieties. Balance is lovely on this one as well, with its medium acidity and red and black fruit aromas and flavours. It will nicely complement a barbecue or anything cooked over an open fire. Cowboys take note.Visitors are welcome to bring picnic fixings to enjoy with wine on the patio, and some food is available for purchase.

kamloops

If you have spent some time in British Columbia’s wine country you are no doubt familiar with

the most of the wine regions, but have you explored BC’s newest wine experience, the Kamloops Wine Trail? Consisting of four unique wineries, there is a wine and a winery on this trail for all wine lovers. Where the pioneers once settled in the Wild West, these new wine pioneers are now fully settled along the same trail nestled along the banks of the South and North Thompson. There are more than 2,000 hours of sunshine a year in the Kamloops’s Thompson Valley and a variety of diverse microclimates exist, allowing winemakers to craft various wine styles from a variety of grapes. The scenery is mind blowing and as you journey among the wineries you are likely to run into all sorts of wildlife; creatures such as mountain sheep and birds of prey call this place home. Choose to drive the route alone or hire a guide--both TasteFull Excursions and DiVine Tours operate in the region. In the region’s Westsyde district along the North Thompson River you’ll find Privato Vineyard &

Winery. Privato grows Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Riesling, Ortega and Marechal Foch. The picnic area is gorgeous and they sell meat and cheese plates. Grab a bottle and stay a while. On the south side of the South Thompson River, Monte Creek Winery has just opened its doors to a spectacular mission-style building where it offers wines from grapes as diverse as Marquette and Frontenac. The signature bottles are named after the infamous train robber, Billy Miner.Cross the highway to Harper’s Trail and you’ll find another excellent patio for longing as well

as some great Riesling, Cabernet Franc, Pinot Gris and even a late harvest wine. The rosé is a great sipper and these folks are super welcoming. Just along from Harper’s Trail is an intimate little tasting room at Sagewood Winery where you will meet Doug and Shelley Wood and hear the story of their 100% estate wines and their relationship with the land and vines. The entire trail is doable in a day and with the newly found Kamloops Flavour Trail, you can also now throw some breweries, farms and markets into the mix.

If you consider yourself a foodie you probably do quite a bit of research when planning a night

out or a visit to another city and know exactly what and where you will eat each day. However, with the increasing trend of organized food tours, you can now leave the planning to the tour company and you can relax and let your guide orchestrate the night.Vancouver Food Tour, Vancouver’s original food tour, operates craft beer tours through Gastown as well as food excursions through both Chinatown and Gastown, and customized tours too. Guests, even those who know the city well, are constantly remarking that the tours have uncovered Vancouver’s hidden gems, both in terms of where they actually dine that night and as a result of chatting with the guides. The tour guides are

all professional chefs, food writers or craft beer experts, and can give tips on newly opened venues or restaurants off the beaten track. The newest tour, Modern Chinatown, includes a brief history of Chinatown and then a tasting through the newer restaurants that now call the area home. There’s no dim sum or chow mein on this tour-- instead it’s all about German sausages, Southern cuisine and perhaps some Jamaican food, as the area is now home to very diverse cuisine. Tour spots vary and can be customized for your group.  If you’ve got a corporate event, big or small, Vancouver Food Tour can work with

you and your budget to plan an unforgettable evening for your group. Many stags and stagettes book their night out with Vancouver Food Tour, as the variety of stops on the trip offer something for everyone.

To stay true to the unique terroir of this Comox Valley vineyard, 40 Knots Estate Vineyard and

Estate Wines is taking further steps to sync its wine production with nature. The winery is going beyond organic with the addition this

year of farm animals as opposed to chemicals to keep the vineyard in order. A visit to the winery will reveal that sheep are being employed to keep the vineyards trim, ducks are eating weeds and chickens are fighting those pesky bugs. Recently the vineyard guardian, a Whippet dog named Ziggy (named after the victory grape Siegerrebe), was featured as March’s poster girl in the SPCA 2015 Winery Dogs of BC Calendar and she also adorns the 2014 Ziggy Siegerrebe varietal wine.40 Knots winemaker, Matt Dumayne,

with 29 vintages under his belt from New Zealand, Washington, Oregon and now at Okanagan Crush Pad is making wines for Haywire and 40 Knots.  Matt is well known for distinct balanced wines that showcase the terroir and the grape in its best form.  Under the label 40 Knots, only estate-grown and -made wines are used from the varietals Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, Gamay Noir, Schoenberger, Siegerrebe and Auxerrois. To realize how special this vineyard is, try the 2014 Whitecaps which is a blend showcasing all the white grapes in the vineyard. To complete the portfolio of offerings a new label, Stall Speed, is introduced to distinguish origin of the Meritage and Merlot Icewine. If you are a fan of brut, you’ll want to try  Spindrift Brut, prepared in the traditional champagne method. The blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir is perfect for any occasion; try with Island oysters, greeting guests, celebrating, lunches or even popcorn and a movie. On the other end of the wine spectrum Safe Haven is an al porto wine with  rich flavours of dried fruit and a warm finish. This one calls for a cheese plate, pumpkin pie or cheesecake.  The 2013 vintage soon to be released will support the Comox Valley Project Watershed.  Check out the label with a commissioned painting by Shirley Dickie.

Craft beer and food lights up Carlos Gomes’s life.

“If I could, I would cook fine dining meals and serve craft beer to my guests every day,” said the youthful father of two who owns and operates the Vancouver Food tour company.

So the next best thing for the food-ie entrepreneur is the Gastown Beer ’n Bites tour.

For the last four years, Gomes has been guiding vacationers and locals on a tour of Vancouver’s historical locale where the legendary Gassy Jack, a sailor turned bar-keep, opened Vancouver’s first saloon 147 years ago.

The tour winds through the cobbled streets of Vancouver’s oldest neighbour-hood and is an unforgettable experience of where “history meets the contempo-rary.”

“History is in the four pure ingredients of the beer; water, malted barley, hops and yeast. While the contemporary influ-ences are found in the ingredients the chefs and brewmasters use to infuse the small batches of craft beer,” said Gomes.

This tour runs from Monday to Sunday

throughout the year — 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. — and is $75 per person. For that, you get an evening or afternoon of three locales, taste three beer flights and nibble on delectable bites of chef creations.

But the best part comes when Gomes opens up on the secrets of what you are drinking and eating — the perfect pair-ings for every craft beer.

“Just imagine, with four simple ingre-dients combined with the creativity of chefs and Brewmasters, magic in a glass happens,” he said.

Another not-to-be-missed epicurean adventure is Gomes’s Vancouver Urban Beer Tour.

“Here we take the adventurous on a tour of the bigger breweries and get behind the scenes of some of the better-known brands. Of course, there is plenty of catered food to go with it.”

Whether it’s corporate events, birth-days, stagettes, stags, reunions or retire-ments, vacation or staycations, conven-tions or interventions, Carlos and his team can create moments that are nev-er to be forgotten in Vancouver. “I hope my guests leave with beautiful memo-ries, gain knowledge, new friends, and have as much pleasure in the experience as I do.”

The summer so far for Recline Ridge in the Shuswap has been “great” according to Graydon

Ratzlaff, who owns the vineyards and winery in the Shuswap with his wife Maureen. “We’ve had lots of traffic in our wine shop from all over the world,” he says.

Big hits for Recline Ridge this summer have been 2013 Bacchus and 2011 Just Being Frank. In July, new releases will include 2012 Marechal Foch, 2012 Just Being Frank and the new 2014 Make Me Blush, a rose´.The Shuswap winery now has a new winemaker—Jaime Flemke, who started with Recline Ridge in February of this year. “She comes to us with a solid background in viticulture and winemaking and is finding exciting potential with our cool climate varietals,” says Graydon.Recline Ridge is known for its award-winning, fruit forward whites including Ortega, Siegerrebe, Bacchus, Kerner, and Shuswap Serenade (from Madeline Sylvaner and Madeline Angevine) and reds including locally-grown Marechal Foch, Hawk’s Haven (Zweigelt and Blaufrankisch), and Just Being Frank (Blaufrankisch).  Although north of the 50th parallel, its vineyards enjoy sun-drenched days and cool evenings which maximize varietal character and set the stage for the production of wines noted for their clean sound structure, intense flavours, and perfect balance.

Enjoy the ambience of the tasting room and uniquely designed wine shop. The comfortable patio and picnic areas are available to enjoy

a glass of Recline Ridge wine, and drink in the scenery of the region, overlooking the vineyard and site.

many reasons thousands of visitors flock to the Shuswap

area each year, and it holds a well-deserved spot near the top of the list. Shuswap Lake and its surrounding area beckons with its lush farmlands, sparkling waters, pristine forests, idyllic orchards and more recently, its cool climate vineyards.

Larch Hills Winery produces premium cool climate wines in an area where the summer sun and cool winters allow for distinctly different and delicious wines. Hazel and Jack Manser, proprietors of Larch Hills, are currently producing their 11th vintage and over the years they’ve amassed a solid following of loyal

customers and a steady stream of new wine enthusiasts. These wines are ideal for summer sipping, easy to drink and equally at home on their own or paired with the area’s fresh foods. Hazel recommends the Sparkling Ortega, Rose and Lemberger.“Everybody loves Ortega,” Hazel says. “Serve it chilled...it is light

and easy to drink, refreshing and festive. Lemberger is a great chilled summer sipper and the rose a perfect lunch wine. It pairs well with salmon or poultry.”This year, visit the Salmon Arm area yourself to discover the allure of Larch Hills Winery.

WINERY PATIO IN THE OKANAGAN

AT ADEGA ON 45TH

FLAVOUR WITH FUN

The summer is here and the patio at Adega on 45th, one of the warmest and sunniest

in the Okanagan, is ready to supply the necessities of wine touring: shade, food, and wine. The shade comes from the vine-covered pergola and the food comes from the handy deli fridge near the tasting bar. Of course, the wine is generally in plentiful supply but you might have to act quickly for some of them. The rosé in particular has developed an intensely loyal following. “It sells out every summer,” explains tasting room manager Racyne Farinha. “Our 2013 sold out in a month last year.” The Adega team has had a great year racking up awards for their wine portfolio. They entered five wines in the Best of BC Wine Awards and all five brought home medals. The ‘13 Pinot Gris took a Gold, the ‘13 Viognier, ‘12 Cabernet Franc and ‘12 Merlot won

Silvers, and the ‘12 Syrah took a Bronze Medal. An impressive five for five tally is a rare accomplishment for any winery to achieve in a single competition. In addition the ‘12 Alexandrino Syrah and the ‘12 Malbec won Silver and Bronze respectively at the Finger Lakes International Wine Competition in New York. The whites have been winning too—the ‘13 Pinot Gris received a Wine Align Bronze. With the release of the new reserve wines—Alexandrino Syrah and Alfredo Merlot—late in June, all of the 2012 vintage reds have now been officially released. Malbec, Syrah, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and the Manuel and Quarteto Tinto blends are all available throughout the summer until they are sold out.

As a grape grower, Fairview Cellars owner Bill Eggert is acutely aware of the variations between seasons. Temperature averages and rainfall levels

over the spring have an effect on how the vines will progress through the rest of the season. “2015 is one of the earliest years I’ve ever seen in the Okanagan,” says Bill. “We are at least 2 full weeks ahead.” He notes that in 2014 his vineyard was in full bloom by June 15th while this year it was June 1st. There was good bud break in the spring followed by tremendous growth because of regular spring rains, which allowed the shoots to reach the top trellis wire by the beginning of June. The first 2013 red to be released will be the Bucket O’ Blood. A preview tasting of this vintage had aromas that said, “Please drink me!” while the palate said, “I will get better with age.” Look for this wine near August 1st and consume or cellar on your own terms. Also due for release mid-summer is the 2014 Sauvignon Blanc. Showing an intensely fruity nose and a palate of ripe apples, the acidity is less bracing than previous vintages, perfectly reflecting the hotter growing season.

Looking for a great red blend at a great price? Look no further than River Stone Estate Winery,

where co-owner and winemaker Ted Kane continues to win accolades. The popular Stones Throw blend of Merlot, Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon was recently named Canada’s best Bordeaux blend under $25, winning a Double Gold Medal at the 2015 All Canadian Wine Championships. With only 383 cases produced of Stones Throw, the best advice is to stock up now!Fans of Ted’s Cabernet Franc—and there are many—won’t be surprised to learn the 2013 vintage has been awarded an ACWC Gold Medal. New releases also have him excited,

too. 2014 Splash, with a basketful of tropical notes, is a surefi re summer pleaser.Because production is increasing in the River Stone vineyard, this will be winery’s last year as a participant in the Garagiste North: Small Guys Wine Festival events in Vancouver and Kelowna (only under 2000 case producers allowed). But as the winery’s reputation grows, so does interest from tour companies, which are bringing more visitors to the stunning location just outside of Oliver on Tuc-el-Nuit Road. With 7 vintages under his belt, Ted has kept aside small quantities of red library wines—2009 Corner Stone and Cabernet Franc and 2010 Corner Stone, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon—which he will be offering on selected Saturdays this summer. For more details on the library releases, which will be in short supply, visit the River Stone web site and sign up for the email list. And, while you are there, check out their wine club, where members specify types of wine, amounts and delivery dates. It’s a great way to get the wines you want.

CC. Jentsch Cellars has taken food and wine pairing toa whole new level. It has

teamed up with the folks at Doug’s Homestead, the famous sausage makers on Route 3 near Hedley, to offer sausages on the BBQ for sale throughout the summer. Visitors can now enjoy wine by the glass and a gourmet sausage with an exciting selection of condiments. The BBQ will be going all summer, making this the perfect lunch or snack stop on your wine tour this year. How about a little Syrah to go with

that sausage? The 2013 vintage is a full-throttle Syrah with no Viognier co-fermentation this vintage, making it extremely focused. The Syrah is grown mostly on the upper and lower benches of their vineyard and gets the full heat of the summer along with early evening shade that maintains the acidity. As well, the 2013 “The Chase” will also fit the bill quite nicely. A blend of 5 Bordeaux grape varieties— Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Malbec, and Petit Verdot— which are all grown in the vineyards on the Golden Mile. An excellent value at $20 for a bottle, this is a great wine to start a cellar collection. In addition to the current cozy wine shop experience, Chris Jentsch has constructed a new larger tasting bar that is perfect for accommodating larger groups. From a small group of 6 to an entourage of 25, CC Jentsch will be able to handle it easily with a beautiful long tasting bar and ample room to roam. Advanced notice is required to use this room so groups are required to book well in advance. Please contact the winery for more information.

To the surprise of no one, things are rockin’ out at Oliver Twist Estate Winery. Gina Mitchell,

winemaker and co-owner of the winery with her husband, Trevor, is a firm believer in the adage that people should take their work seriously and themselves lightly. She leaves in her wake a trail of vibrant colours, beautifully made wines and happy customers. The serious work of writing wine labels doesn’t prevent her from having a bit of fun, either, as proved by the back label of her 2013 Rockabilly Red: There’s nothing quite as seductive as nostalgia. That indescribable feeling that overtakes you when a scent, a taste, a note played just right takes you back exactly where you want to be.  Ruby Sue certainly couldn’t resist the pull. This good girl gone wild from the Black Sage Bench is a rapturous beauty turned rockabilly temptress who knows what she wants and just how to get it. After all, how could she

be expected to play by the rules when she lives to spread that Rockabilly rumble? Like Ruby Sue, this vibrant red blend isn’t afraid to do what feels good. Rockabilly Red is a big time riot, luscious and bursting with dark, juicy black cherries, butterscotch, cocoa, and toasty coconut flavour. Rockabilly Red is sure to be your next favourite song. Okay, I’m no psychiatrist. If you think Ruby Sue just might be Gina Mitchell, you will have ask her yourself. Me, I plan to play it safe and live another day.The real message here is that Oliver Twist Winery is a must-must visit for people who like wine and fun.

When Deborah W i l d e purchased the

site of Oliver’s Hidden Chapel Winery its previous owner said to her that “God told her Deborah was supposed to have this property”. Today, this vision has been vindicated as Deborah, guided by the spirit of Bacchus, has turned her property into a winery of such quality that it should be regarded as a mandatory pilgrimage for every wine lover.Hidden in the hills off Highway 97 along Oliver’s northern fringe, the winery takes its name from a small chapel that’s veiled from sight when on the highway by a garden worthy of Saint Francis. Composed of luscious flora, the gardens line a dried creek bed and give shelter to just about every species of songbird found in the Okanagan. However, the real spiritual experience is in the tasting room where ‘the faithful’ come to restock their cellars. It’s here that the truly devout can sample all 13 wines. Everything from off-dry whites to ruby-coloured rosés and enough reds to stock your own cellar through the winter.

Complete your experience here by trying the holy trilogy, better known as the “wedding Trio”:

2014 White WeddingA citrus-rich and fruitful white blend, whose highly detailed recipe is closely guarded in the subterranean cellar. Drink happily ever after!2014 Blushing BrideA magenta coloured rosé with prominent hints of strawberries and raspberries, capable of quenching even the hottest of Okanagan days.2012 Shotgun WeddingA marriage of Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot that greets the palate with chocolate and espresso notes. Like most marriages, it only gets better with age.

If you’ve travelled through southern British Columbia you may have run into Canada’s smallest bird, a tiny

hummingbird.

To pay homage to this lovely little creature, the Wyse Family, founders of Burrowing Owl Estate Winery, introduced a line up of wines under the label Calliope, a word from Greek origin meaning ‘beautiful voice’. The Wyse family is known for their efforts in wildlife preservation, in particular wild birds.Grapes for Calliope wines are carefully sourced from local vineyards in the South Okanagan and Similkameen Valleys. The wines are crafted to showcase bright, fresh, fruit fl avours

and crisp acidity. Bottled under screw cap, these varieties and blends are meant for early consumption, and oak is used conservatively if at all. These are perfect summer sippers, the perfect patio wines. The Calliope 2014 Figure 8 White is a blend of predominantly Pinot Gris, Chardonnay and Gerwürztraminer, with a splash of Viognier and Sauvignon Blanc, and is full of fresh pink grapefruit, mango, apricot, melon and fresh herbaceous aromas. You’ll fi nd lots of juicy fruit fl avours of apple, peach, mango and apricot on the palate with a touch of honey and some nice acidity and minerality. Don’t be afraid to pair this with some spicy foods, sushi, or oysters with a bit of chili mignonette.Calliope wines are available in retail stores in B.C. and Alberta, in the Sonora Room Restaurant at Burrowing Owl in Oliver and in select restaurants.  This summer the 2013 Figure 8 Red (Merlot and Cabernet Franc blend) is available in BC Government Liquor Stores.

There is a secret separating great winemaking from the mediocre. It’s having the perfect blend

of terroir and viticulture, coupled with great passion, art and science. Desert Hills Estate Winery in Oliver understands this. When brothers Randy, Jessie and Dave Toor started Desert Hills, they knew they could produce phenomenal grapes. They’d been doing so for years. They sought out one of BC’s most experienced winemakers, Elias Phiniotis, PhD, to help manifest their vision of a world-class boutique winery. From day one, plans were put in motion to have his protegé, son George, take over the reigns when the time was right. From 2007-2008 on, the blends are all George’s. He has garnered some of Desert Hills’ most prestigious accolades, including two Lieutenant Governor General Awards. “Ambassador,” Desert Hill’s sinfully delicious port-style wine is 100% George’s baby.

“George’s passion and the Phiniotis family’s expertise in winemaking combined with our tradition of growing quality grapes has given us great success,” says Randy.George describes himself as an “obsessive perfectionist,” because “in the wine world, you’re only as

good as your last wine.”Desert Hills is known for their f u l l - b o d i e d reds, and George follows his father’s red winemaking methodology. But for the a r o m a t i c whites, Gamay and dessert

wines, George has fi ne-tuned his own program. His big Double Gold win for ‘Best White Wine’ (Gewürztraminer) proves his craftsmanship. When asked why they’re willing to go through the back breaking work involved in running a winery, Dave smiled, saying, “Yes, it’s lots of hard work. But this is what you get.” With unassuming reverence, he held up a glass of 2014 Gamay. “That is why we do it.”

oliver | similkameenGehrinGer Brothers Winery– Wine history on the Golden Mile

Gehringer Brothers Winery on the Golden Mile in Oliver has played a big

part in the evolution of the BC wine industry. Their wines have been consistently recognized in competitions from year to year and they have a loyal following of customers who appreciate both their quality wines and their reasonable prices. The 2014 “Old Vines” Auxerrois was awarded a Best of Class and a Gold Medal at the 2015 Los Angeles International Wine Awards as well as a Bronze Medal at the 2015 Great Northwest Wine Competition. These 30-year-old vines have produced a wine that is a mellow gold in the glass with a nose filled with honey, grapefruit and mineral notes. The firm, mineral notes follow through on the palate with soft, ripe

Gala apple characteristics to round it out. The finish is silky, presenting notes of white grapefruit zest, candied lemon, soft apple and more minerals. The Auxerrois grape is named for its origins in the town of Auxerre, France. There are now between 800 to 1000 acres planted in Germany, although it is still primarily used for blending. It is beginning to achieve recognition as a fabulous wine in its own right. The 2014 Dry Rock Unoaked Chardonnay has also been a consistent performer on the competition front, bringing home a Bronze Medal from the 2015 Los Angeles International Wine Awards and another Bronze Medal from the 2015 Great Northwest Wine Competition. The wine is light gold in the glass with a bright nose that is loaded with ripe apples and just a little bit peachy. The palate is fresh and bright as well, with more ripe apple, as well as notes of pineapple, butter and cream. The finish is creamy with soft lemon notes.

Caroline and Tim Cottrill opened the doors to Robin Ridge Winery just outside

of Keremeos in 2008 when the Similkameen Valley was just starting to get noticed for its quality grape growing. Fast-forward to 2015 and not only is the Similkameen on the radar of BC wine lovers but a distinctive style has emerged from wineries in the Valley. The portfolio of wines at Robin Ridge has its own distinct and consistent style that fits well within the Similkameen and, like all fine wine; it reflects how the grapes are grown.

Growing top quality grapes is paramount for Tim. “I want the wines to express what I do in the vineyard,” says Tim who clearly loves working in the vineyard. Tim has trained most of his vines using the

Geneva Double-Curtain trellising system in which the grape vines grow tall, straight trunks with the shoots pointing down. The fruit is higher than is typical and the result is fruit with deeper colour and more tannins. Nowhere is this more consistently evident than in their Gamay, Pinot Noir, and Merlot, which deliver both qualities consistently each vintage. Similkameen summers are hot and Kim English, the official wine shop hostess Extraordinaire, will have two refreshing rosé wines available to help beat the heat. The 2013 Flicker, a Chardonnay and Pinot Noir blend, delivers the best of both worlds - cherries, cantaloupes, and bright floral notes. The 2014 Pink Flamingo, made with organic Sovereign Coronation grapes, is a tangy sipper with beautiful aromas of orange blossoms and peach skins.  Look for Robin Ridge at the BBQ King and at farmer’s markets throughout the summer or stop into the wine shop on your next visit to the Similkameen Valley.

CLOS DUE SOLEIL—A BRAND NEW WINERY IN THE SIMILKAMEEN

EAU VIVRE: ELEGANT, AWARD-WINNING WINES GROWN AND MADE IN THE SIMILKAMEEN VALLEY

Eau Vivre Winery in Cawston has a good-sized portfolio of wines with lots of different styles to

choose from but it is Pinot Noir that has really put them on the map. Two back-to-back Lieutenant Governor’s Awards for Excellence in BC Wine will do that. The newly released 2013 vintage of Pinot Noir is looking to grab some of that action as well. It has already won a Gold Medal at the All Canadian Wine Championships and was also voted Best Pinot Noir by the BC Wine Appreciation Society in a double blind tasting that also included international Pinot Noirs. But there’s more than beautiful Pinot Noir at Eau Vivre. Winemaker Anthony Buchanan’s refi ned approach to Pinot also works well with other varieties including Viognier, Malbec, and Cabernet Franc. Full-fl avoured as they are, these wines retain the French-style elegance that marks Eau Vivre’s genuine house style. Even the highly aromatic varieties Gewürztraminer, Riesling, and the full throttle white and red blends Cinq Blanc and

Buddhafull all maintain this style beautifully.

The Eau Vivre tasting room in Cawston is a fi ne stopping point close to Highway 3 but removed enough to be tranquil. It is small and cozy but the picnic area is large, open, and surrounded by greenery so all you can see are the vines and the mountains. It has shade and is an oasis to enjoy on a wine tour where relaxing spots to stop are not always easy to fi nd.Check out Eau Vivre’s new website eauvivrewinery.ca for more information about their wines and upcoming special events.

C los du Soleil in the Similkameen Valley has always tried to be a unique

destination and now with a new winery and tasting room, it is proud to contribute something new to the Similkameen’s wine scene. “The community of wineries in the Similkameen has been working hard at building the reputation of the valley,” says managing director and winemaker Michael Clark. “With the growing tourism industry here, we’re glad to offer an important new destination.”That destination is now a brand new winery with a beautifully bright

tasting room to welcome visitors. Decorated with lots of wood (supplied from the old honey barn that was formerly their wine shop), the new tasting room features a large L-shaped bar and many windows to see the vineyard as well as the production area inside the winery. Even though the tasting room is easily three times as big as theold one, none of the rustic charm or atmosphere is lost. “We’ve expanded, but it’s still intimate,” says Michael. “It’s just a lot more comfortable for tasting wines.” Larger retail space also means that they can offer more special items

for sale including back vintages and large format bottles. Tasting wine is only part of the experience. Guests are welcome to experience the organic vineyard up close on their own. A large picnic area nestled among the vines is also available. Vineyard tours are

available and groups may tour the winery facility if booked in advance. Follow Clos du Soleil on social media, or check out www.closdusoleil.ca, for special events and promotions this summer!

The UlTimaTe Similkameen Winery experience aT Seven SToneS Winery

Forbidden FrUiT’S delicioUS dead end

The ‘Seven Stones Experience’ is very likely to be the

ultimate Similkameen winery experience this season. The special 45-minute tour begins where all wines begin—in the vineyard! Guests are shown the unique features that make the Seven Stones property a truly exceptional place to grow the highest quality grapes. Following the grapes’ journey to becoming wine, the tour heads inside to see the processing areas before going underground into the spectacular Wine Caves. A tour of caves, a barrel tasting, a new chocolate and wine experience, and a special audio experience using the newly installed cave sound system completes the experience. The audio experience, a new element in the wine-cellaring program, now ensures that all of the senses are a part of this great experience. Call to book your spot for a ‘Seven Stones Experience’ in advance.  Return visitors to Seven Stones will also be thrilled with the expanded

wine shop. The new wine shop is brighter and more spacious without losing any of the cozy charm that made the old shop so memorable. Colin Wilson, who also designed the Wine Caves, using an innovative torching technique, has masterfully textured the vaulted ceiling that duplicates the same curve as the ceiling in the Wine Caves. The bold centerpiece is the wraparound tasting bar made out of a huge maple tree from the Similkameen Valley that was cut down 30 years ago. The new wine shop also allows direct access to a picnic area on the deck that offers a stunning panorama of the lower Similkameen Valley. It is the perfect place for a wine and view pairing!

Even after 10 years, there’s still a first time for everything. Forbidden Fruit’s 2013 Caught

Apricot Mistelle and the 2011 Earth Series Merlot both won Double-Platinum awards at Winepress

Northwest Platinum Judging making this the first time ever that a Northwest winery has won Double-Platinum in both grape and fruit wine categories in the same competition. “The Caught was the

fourth highest ranking wine in the competition,” says Steve.A special new label for the grape wines riffs on the farm’s location at the end of Sumac Road. The new label is called “Dead End” but it also reflects the no-turning-back creativity that has permeated everything that Steve Venables and Kim Brind’Amour have done in their decade of making wine. Dead End will feature four wines - one white and three red - as wine shop exclusives. “Skrewed” (Pinot Gris, Riesling, and Sauvignon Blanc), “Catch 22” (Cabernet Franc), “No

Return” (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc), and “Game Over” (Tannat and Malbec) will be the lineup of bold wines created by winemaker Nathan Venables. Of course, all wines are made with certified organic grapes.Art has always been important to the experience at Forbidden Fruit which features paintings, barrel stave art, jewelry and glass vases. Forbidden Fruit will be one of four sites hosting “Art in the Garden” exhibits with wine tastings and food pairings outside in the orchard near the river. A drop-in event, the exhibit will be all day July 25th and 26th.If a day trip isn’t enough, you can always plan to stay longer. The Harvest Moon Guesthouse will be reopening again for the first time since 2006. Check the website forbiddenfruitwines.com for more details.

MEYER FAMILY VINEYARD GOES GLOBAL

A traveler in London might be surprised to fi nd a healthy stock of Canadian wine in the

historic district of Covent Garden. While thoroughly enjoyed at home, it is still something of a rare occurrence for our wines to cross our borders, and even rarer still that they ever ‘cross the pond’ to fi ll European wine racks. Fortunately, this has never deterred Jak Meyer and Janice Stevens of Meyer Family Vineyards from crafting wines that are increasingly fi nding a place in the fi ercely competitive world of internationally acclaimed wine. As their property in Okanagan Falls is particularly accommodating to Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, the Meyer Family has built their reputation upon these prestigious varietals. Winemaker Chris Carson (an international himself, having trained with wineries in France and New Zealand) has worked with the family to produce four different labels of Pinot Noir and fi ve different labels of Chardonnay. Their boutique size (they harvest only 35 acres) keeps

their production at a modest 6000 cases a year, which allows them to be meticulous during the harvest and production. This incredible attention to detail has allowed Meyer Family Vineyards to establish themselves not only in America, but also in the selective markets of Asia (in Japan, the Philippines, Hong Kong, and mainland China) and Europe (in Switzerland and England) where they are currently the only Canadian wine available at every Mark and Spencer in the country. It’s a prominent list that’s likely to grow, with distributers in Germany, Australia, and South America showing interest in this little winery with a big reputation. For those who want to take their pick of these esteemed wines before they pass customs, joining the newly established Meyer Family Wine Club is essential. Each member is guaranteed 12 bottles a year and because the production of some of these wines is so limited, membership is the only way to get a hold of specifi c labels and new varietals such as the Riesling.

2014 MFV RieslingThis off-dry white maintains a balance of earthy and fruitful notes encased in an aroma of citrus. It tugs at the heartstrings of its new English

market by pairing phenomenally with seafood or, should you fi nd yourself in Asia, grab a bottle and enjoy with the local fare.

When you’ve succeeded as long as Stag’s Hollow Winery, established in

1995 when BC had just over 30 wineries, you have the luxury of building on your strengths. From day one, owners Larry Gerelus and Linda Pruegger balanced Old and New World sensibilities to create a unique style. When Winemaker Dwight Sick arrived in 2008, he mirrored their passion in every aspect of the vineyard and winemaking, and shared their commitment to continuous learning and wise approach to the idiom, “Don’t put all your eggs in one basket.” As Dwight says,

“Breathe in. Breathe out.” With the fl exibility of the Okanagan’s diverse microclimates, Stag’s Hollow experiments with a wide range of grape varieties. The Riesling was a one-off in 2011 as a single vineyard trial, so successful that the search was on and plantswas sourced from the Amalia Vineyard, Osoyoos. With lots of stonefruit on the palate, Riesling 2014 ishighly textural with layers of McIntosh apple on the nose and thanks to Muscat, honey and fl oral notes – a prime example of how the Okanagan terroir can offer a distinct yet elegant rendition. Pinot Noir is “taken very seriously

as something to embrace as a focal point of the region”. Larry and Dwight attendthe intensive Steamboat Pinot Noir Conference annually to dig deep into every aspect of growing it, study styles and techniques of winemaking

and tasting and comparing Pinots from around the world. Taste what they’ve learned in the delicious 2012 Pinot Noir, complex and textured with red berries andspice.

| THE ART OF FOOD AND WINE LIVES AT LIQUIDITY

PINOT BLANC X2 AT KRAZE LEGZ WINERY

When discussion turns to the grape that produces the best wine in British

Columbia, Pinot Blanc is usually amongst one of the fi rst to be mentioned. Based on the success

that Kraze Legz Winery owners Sue and Gerry Thygesen have had with the varietal, it would be hard to argue differently. Inevitably, each vintage is beautifully balanced, crisp and clean, with well-delineated fruit fl avours and the brilliant acidity makes for a perfect match with many dishes, notably oysters, or deliciously all on its own.Whether it is released under the SKAHA Vineyard label or as The

Bee’s Knees, this is undeniably a 100% Pinot Blanc to be reckoned with. Each vintage has been a success since it was fi rst produced in 2009. At major Canadian and International competitions their Pinot Blancs have

harvested Platinum, three Gold and six Silver Medals. The trend continues into 2015 with a Best in Category at the Canadian Oyster Wine Competition (winner two of the last three years) “What we’re seeing is all our wines are getting even better with each vintage—the roots of our aging vines travel deeper into the fossilized

sandstone and shale, specifi c to this site, and with each vintage those attributes are becoming more and more pronounced,” said Gerry. Each one of the Kraze Legz and SKAHA Vineyard wines has its own impressive portfolio of medals, and each one brilliantly expressing the best of this unique site.Open 10 am to 6 pm May 1st to October 15th.

hosts Naramata tailgate Party

The African proverb “Where the rooster crows there is a village” was never more true

than it will be Saturday, September 12th, when Red Rooster Winery hosts the Naramata Tailgate Party, 6:30 to 9:30 pm. Red Rooster welcomes on-site its Naramata Bench Wineries Association colleagues, a collaborative group of 24 distinguished wineries nestled along the lakeview route between Penticton and Naramata. Distinctive wines will be poured by each of the 24 wineries to be

savoured along with delectable cuisine from local chefs. As if that isn’t enough to crow about, there’ll be live music to enjoy along with Red Rooster’s eclectic art exhibits and the stunning vineyard and lake view. This annual event is perennially sold out so get your tickets soon (naramatabench.com), or the “yolk’s on you”.Of course, the unusual is usual at Red Rooster and you can anticipate a unique and fun winery experience. Art permeates the winery and much of it is not what you’d typically expect. There’s local celebrity, Frank the Baggage Handler, a large statue of a naked guy greeting you. Or Caroline, the generously endowed mermaid, ready to pose for all your photo memories. The highly knowledgeable (and clothed) staff will lead you through an informative tasting of the luscious wines of Winemaker Karen Gillis. Consider hands-on and lip-smacking experiences such as “Melt-in-your-mouth Chocolate & Wine Pairing”; lessons in “Tasting Room Lingo”; or a “Food Pairing at its Finest” seminar. See details on www.redroosterwinery.com

and sign up for the email list to receive the latest news on events and new releases of wine. If you’re feeling peckish, you’ll want to explore Red Rooster’s Pecking Room Patio and Grill. Open daily, noon to 5 pm to October 12th, it showcases international flair and love of diversity on the menu crafted by Chef Darin Paterson, proprietor of Bogner’s in Penticton. The delectable farm-to-table menu offers “small peckings” such as fresh baked flat bread with accompaniments

such as tapenade, crushed eggplant and flavoured yogurts or quinoa salad; a charcuterie plate; selections of hand-pulled pizza; salads; soups; summer plates such as empanadas, tostadas, smoked trout, and vegan bean curry; as well as desserts and non-alcoholic beverages or Red Rooster wines. of-this-world ‘Slowpoke’ vodkas (infused with local ingredients in three fl avours: Sour Cherry, Rhubarb and Apricot) AND a local coffee infused liqueur (Blasted Brew) - you are going to go gaga for this place. There is such

a profound difference in taste when you compare artifi cially fl avoured spirits with the likes of these. And this style refl ects their personal brand too—owners Dawn and Doug Lennie are all about protecting their good earth and community. Dawn explains, “we share our spent wheat mash with local farmers--currently Jay and Wendy (at Bella Wines) as well as 3 or 4 other local Naramata small home based farms and Andy’s Animal Acres.” These farmers recycle the mash for use as fertilizer and to feed their animals. The patio has a killer view on to Okanagan Lake, where visitors can order a cocktail and linger. Dawn also said, “We are also going to be offering distillery tours/tastings. Currently we have one time slot scheduled for Friday and one on Saturday that people can pre-book. The cost is $8.00 per person and includes a tasting of our full line-up of products.”Doug, who happens to also have a construction business, built the

beautiful tasting room, offering large windowed views to sparkling Okanagan Lake just below. And, you can book this gorgeous place for your own private event or wedding!Make sure to prepare yourself for some shopping as well, the in-store cocktail accessories and local art and goodies is fantastic. Cheers!

Alarge new sign greets visitors to D’Angelo Estate Winery, where from the parking lot,

wine shop and bocce courts they can enjoy manicured vineyards and an open fi eld that slopes right down to the east shore of Okanagan Lake. Welcome to Naramata Bench, where owner and winemaker Sal D’Angelo spends countless hours out among the vines, ensuring they produce grapes in a quantity and quality that allow fl avours to shine through when he applies his magical touch in the winery.Care in the winery, which includes pumping wine from barrels with nitrogen, and aging them until Sal deems them ready, results in wines that are drinkable now, but which tend to age beautifully. The best-selling D’Angelo wine continues to be Dolce Vita Rosso. Made from late harvest Tempranillo grapes from a 1.5-acre block in the vineyard, Dolce Vita Rosso includes Icewine and is fortifi ed with brandy made from Sal’s grapes.Visitors to the area will enjoy the opportunity to stay in the Vineyard View Guest House, where 5 units can accommodate small or larger groups. Located in the 27-acre

property’s 8-acres of vineyard, each unit has access to a deck for guests to enjoy the view and outdoor living.

2011 Merlot-Cabernet Franc Newly released, this wine has been winning raves from customers and it’s no wonder. The blend results in

an appealing sweet berry fl avour in a ripe, generous wine. Aromas and fl avours of black currant, vanilla, chocolate and coffee burst from a fi ne example of what the terroir can produce.

M ore awards for Moraine Estate Winery! Their beautiful 2012 Moraine

Pinot Noir has received the award for the Best Pinot Noir in the Best of Varietals Competition in British Columbia. With just under 500 entries to the competition, this was no minor feat. Not just glory for the reds either--the 2013 Riesling was awarded a Gold Medal at the recent 2015 Okanagan Life Magazine Awards. Winemaker Jacq Kemp continues to make magic with the fruit grown on the fantastic terroir of their Naramata Bench vineyards. The soil conditions work in concert with the sunshine hours and reflection off the lake. The rest of the kudos goes to Jacq and her winemaking skill. This is a family business. Proprietors Oleg and Svetlana Aristarkhov produce a beautiful range of varietals as well as the very popular and affordable Cliffhanger White and Cliffhanger Red blends, and an icewine too.

Just to get your taste buds going, here are descriptions of the two recent award winners. Both will make perfect summer barbecue pairings. Do make time to visit this beautiful winery. The summer views from the tasting room are stunning and the wine shop staff is super friendly-a visit will make you fall in love with Moraine wine even more.

2014 RieslingFind hints of lemon, lime, and tangy ginger— the aromas will linger long after the glass is complete. The natural acidity of this wine is balanced well by the natural residual sugars.

2012 Pinot NoirThis wine exhibits aromas of violets, licorice, cranberries, lingonberries and exotic tamarillo.  Its supple palate is nicely balanced with natural acidity and lingering juicy tannins.

EXCELLENCE IN WINEMAKING

“Beyond the Freuds, let’s get serious” - Judi Skinner

Page 29: Wine Trails, July 30, 2015

As Hillside Winery & Bistro takes a bow for its latest awards, President Duncan

McCowan refl ects, “We’re proud of our outstanding team who share a drive to produce the fi nest wines possible while creating an exceptional experience for visitors.” Most recently, Hillside gave thanks to the readers of the Penticton Western News for selecting it as Platinum winner for Best Winery & Bistro in the South Okanagan. The landmark timber frame building, designed by renowned architect Robert Mackenzie, emulates a traditional gristmill. Along with its impeccable

gardens maintained by long-time groundskeeper Karin Parkin, it provides a stunning setting for al fresco dining. What keeps guests racing back are the award-winning wines and mouth-watering menu to match. Known for locally-inspired dishes, the Bistro launched its summer lunch and dinner menu with daily features that add to the delight. Whether you opt for a full meal or something lighter to nibble on, a paired wine or tasting fl ight of three wines, the awe-invoking

views are a feast for your soul. By the upper patio, a distinctive venue accommodates about 65 people for special occasions such as a beautiful wedding. Along with those lovely gardens, top of the tower, vineyards and lakeview as backdrop, it’s picture-perfect to encapsulate that memorable day. For group bookings and events, contact the Bistro Manager Lisa Henderson or make dining reservations (recommended) at hillsidewinery.ca. The Bistro is open daily, 11:30 am to 9 pm. The unique, small-lot and terroir-driven wines made by winemaker Kathy Malone with “gentle touch and minimal intervention” continue to capture recognition in reviews and award competitions. The 2011 Cabernet Franc and 2014 Rosé received Gold Medals at the 2015 All Canadian Wine Awards. The 2014 Rosé also took Silver at the 2015 Great Northwest Wine Competition. These awards as well as a fi stful of Silver and Bronze Medals at a variety of competitions are highly affi rming for Hillside Winery and its winemakingdecisions. Taste Hillside wines in the air-conditioned wine shop, open daily from 10 am to 7 pm. In addition, you can browse the wine shop for select gift and gourmet food items, sourced from local artisans. You can roam the grounds on a self-guided tour and learn about the winemaking process through detailed poster boards. Or through the summer, guided tours are available by appointment booked in advance.

This is a wine to age,” Judy Kingston tells a visitor as they sit on a sun-washed patio at

Serendipity Winery. The reference is to the 2011 Merlot they, along with Judy’s daughter and winemaker-in-training Katie O’Kell, are savouring. “I call it my Ode to Merlot.” Judy wanted to produce a Merlot that goes beyond the lighter table wine styles that have become common. “I wanted to produce a bigger, full-bodied wine that would pair well with food, which is our top priority at Serendipity.”

Two events in August will return by popular demand. On August 1st the legendary ‘Naughty or Nice’ free event will offer two food pairings to go with their rosé, Devil’s Advocate and White Lie. And an outdoor

movie night on August 15th will feature Good Will Hunting. $25 price includes wine, pizza and popcorn. It is free for Tier 2 and 3 Wine Club members. Check the web site for more information.2011 MerlotCropping to very low levels and taking longer in every way to produce, including 4-5 years aging in the cellar pays big dividends. The smooth, velvety mouthfeel is complemented by aromas of vanilla and cassis, with fl avours of cinnamon, mocha and cherry. Red meats pair beautifully.2013 Viognier“Hand planted, hand everything” from the Serendipity is a tropical delight, boasting notes of orange blossom and tangerine, with hints of blood orange and apricot. Not surprisingly, it won Gold at the 2014 All Canadian Wine Championships. A touch of coconut teases. Judy, a French-trained chef, likes to serve it with goat cheese fritters drizzled with a dressing made with a grapefruit juice reduction, oil and vinegar.

Inspired by the success of last year’s participation in Penticton’s Saturday community

market, the Bench Artisan Food Market will participate again until mid-September. “We’ll be in same great location on Front Street just off Main,” says co-owner Heather Glynes. “Since it’s a challenge with the Saturday downtown road

closures for our fans to get to our location, we bring the Bench to the market. We’re delighted to support such a wonderful Penticton attraction and it gives us another opportunity to welcome visitors to our community.” You’ll find Bench-made fruit muffins and scones, granola, almonds, cookies, date squares, and granola bars along

with its fresh-squeezed lemonade and other cold drinks. The Bench’s old fashioned popcorn machine also returns to make truffle popcorn on site with non-GMO, organic popcorn kernels, popped with organic coconut oil and topped with real butter and Amola truffle salt. Yes, please! While you’re there, capture your visit with a fun picture using the Bench’s own quirky photo board, custom painted by talented local artist Larry Hunter. Now there’s an artsy memento for you! After you’ve completed your tour of the downtown

markets, just follow Front Street up Vancouver Avenue to the Bench for a sit-down brunch on its picturesque garden patio or inside its art-bedecked café. If you prefer, grab a homemade takeaway meal, or pick up artisan grocery items.

Open daily, Monday to Friday from 7 am to 5 pm; and Saturday, Sunday and holidays, 8 am to 5 pm, the Bench Market offers comfort food with a stylish local twist.

W ine and food, like art, are very

personal. What a person eats and drinks is often an expression of who they are. But what about the creators of the food and drink? And what about the space around them. What’s in the glass or on the plate is often an equally strong reflection of the person who made it.For Gavin and Shana Miller, whostarted Upper Bench Winery & Creamery as an opportunity to showcase their skills and ultimately themselves through award winning

wines and cheeses, developing a space that also reflects who they are has been critical. Upper Bench Winery & Creamery is a place that is a truly authentic reflection of its people. It’s warm and welcoming in the way the owners are. It is often full of laughter and great stories. There is something

traditional about its simplicity. “There’s an easy feeling, sipping our locally produced dry wines and cheeses among the vines,” says Shana. “The experience we’ve created here is something people can take home as a member of our

Curds & Corks Club (an exclusive wine and cheese club that shippeds across Canada).” The inviting covered patio and welcoming wine shop are spaces where the pretention that permeates much of the wine industry simply doesn’t exist. And in what feels like the perfect contrast to the simplicity of the place are the complex and bright wine and cheeses that are produced here.

Find a comfortable spot on the patio with friends and enjoy Upper Bench’s perfectly paired wines and cheeses. Sit back and truly take in this place, the people and their wines. Then pick up a bottle or two, along with some cheese, to take home and relive the experience again and again.

Clean underthings aren’t the only items dancing from Dirty Laundry Vineyard’s clothing

lines in the summer breeze. A show stopping five Gold Medals and two Silver has been added to the Summerland winery’s display of both national and international awards.

At the 2015 All Canadian Wine Championships, Dirty Laundry took home four Gold Medals plus a Double Gold for the top Pinot Noir under $25 in Canada. Only 300 cases of the award-winning 2013 Pinot Noir were produced, so you’ll want to stock up on this hot ticket wine before the cellar is cleared out. Gold winners included the 2013 Not so Knotty Chardonnay, 2013 Naughty Chardonnay, 2013 Syrah, and the recently released 2014 Woo Woo Vines Gewürztraminer. With quintuple Gold, Dirty Laundry Vineyard placed as the top Summerland/Bottleneck Drive winery.

An ocean and 7400 kilometres away, the winery also shone brightly on stage at the 2015 International Wine & Spirit Competition in London, England. Both the 2013 Say Yes Pinot Gris and 2013 Threadbare Vines Gewürztraminer were awarded Silver Medals,

solidifying these wines as two of the world’s best vintages. “We’ve turned a corner in Canada and we’re getting good recognition throughout the world,” says Mason Spink, Dirty Laundry’s winemaker. “It’s nice to see we’re winning international awards as well as national. It’s really positive and exciting.“Awards are often reflected upon the winemaker but I would like to thank the team here because it’s a lot of hard work from a lot of different people,” adds Spink. “It’s made my job easier to have a great team behind me.” To taste these award winners, you’ll want to plan a trip to Dirty Laundry’s tasting room and gift shop. Voted the area’s top wine destination by TripAdvisor, a visit to this stunning winery is an experience you don’t want to miss. The shaded patio is surrounded by views of Okanagan Lake and, if you’re lucky, you might just get a chance to see the Kettle Valley Railway’s steam engine roll on by. On weekends throughout July and August, live entertainment will jazz up the winery’s fun atmosphere even more. Dirty Laundry Vineyards is open seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. all summer long.

Step out on to the land of Sage Hills and breathe deeply: the air is clean and vibrant with organic life.

Rick Thrussell and his family bought Sage Hills in 2006, with a vision of making premier wines from organic grapes. When choosing land the terroir was of the utmost importance, and Sage Hills proved to be the perfect balance of wind, sun and soil. Rick works with the environment by choosing varietals that will thrive on the land, in this case, Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and Gewürztraminer.Rick was introduced to the art of winemaking by his grandfather who made wine in the garage, and over the years he developed a discerning palate and love of fine wines. The dedication to provide quality wines without compromise drove Rick to invest in 100% pure varietals imported from France to ensure consistency in taste and quality. By adhering to high standards, the Sage Hills label needs no trendy names or marketing gimmicks;the wine speaks for itself with an understated elegance. With an additional two acres in Oliver, Sage Hills Winery is now

producing Syrah and will be the first winery in the Okanagan to produce a sparkling Pinot Gris in true Grand Cru fashion. Watch out for that in 2016.

Sage Hills proudly holds Salmon Safe certification. The requirements exceed those of certified organic, but Rick is dedicated to leaving a healthy environment for future generations. Indeed, his boutique winery is a sustainable business model for a wine industry that focuses on quality over quantity. For wine lovers looking for a taste of the unique boutique wineries in the Okanagan, the Sage Hills tasting room opens this June.

As DeLong Studio marks 25 years of dazzling the Okanagan with its hand-

crafted, original sterling silver jewelry and custom-cut semi-precious stones, owner John DeLong celebrates the staff and their commitment to customer service. Says John, “Sue May, store manager and her staff Judi, Kathy and Paula truly make your visit special. With their friendly approach, you can leisurely explore

our extensive collection or count on them to find that perfect piece for you.” Once you’ve visited, you’ll see that’s no easy feat. While the compilation is exquisitely displayed in a quaint cottage, don’t let the size fool you, it is chock-a-block with treasures such as rings, chains and necklaces, earrings, bracelets, pendants, cufflinks, gemstone knives and corkscrews, scarves, leather accessories, and watercolour art cards. Included is a large selection of fine mineral specimens and polished semi-precious stones. The lapidary work is mostly produced in-house and custom set into DeLong designs. What isn’t produced on site is created by an international team of fine artisans such as silversmiths and leather craftspeople and carefully procured by John. Many fine items will be featured in 25th Anniversary sales throughout the season. To experience this stunning studio, which is open daily April to Christmas from 10 am to 5 pm, just follow the DeLong Studio signs in the Trout Creek neighbourhood of Summerland to its garden setting in a residential yard. For those who can’t make it in person or want to add to their collection from home, DeLong (delongstudio.com) ships worldwide. You’ll also find an assortment of DeLong jewelry at

the Penticton VQA Wine Shop year round, and in wine-touring season at Thornhaven Estates Winery and 8th Generation Vineyard.

After ten-plus years of making award-winning Alsatian-style whites, Bordeaux-style reds,

sinful sparklings and decadent dessert wines, it’s apparent that Summerland’s Sonoran Estate Winery has what it takes to tempt any palate. Now that it has moved back to the original location at 21606 Bridgeman Road, things have come full-circle for the Smits family winery.

The easy-access location, great portfolio and gracious hostessing has made Sonoran a must-see destination along Summerland’s popular Bottleneck Drive route. A picnic licence and delicious pre-packaged deli-fare allows their loyal following to enjoy a glass on the patio at a visually-stunning location on the slopes of Lake Okanagan. Simple, beautiful, and absolutely perfect. The shop is

open daily 10-6 until mid-October.On Saturday, July 11th from 12-4, Sonoran invites loyal customers, friends and new guests to attend free festivities celebrating their Grand Re-Opening. Local act “Case of Blues,” featuring

Dave Thomas will perform, along with yours truly ;)From Sonoran’s history of beautiful blue bottles to the eye-catching blue roof of son Pieter Smits’ new winery (set to open this summer just

north of the Summerland tourism office), it is clear that the Smits family is poised for continuing the family winemaking tradition well into the next generation.

Kalala means miracle place, but the success of the winery is no miracle; it’s the

result of the thriving terroir and winemaking expertise.

Ask Tibby Erdelyi, Kalala’s winemaker, why organic and his answer is simple – why not? Tibby can taste the difference between organic and non-organic grapes, and if the poisonous

pesticides or herbicides on the vines interfere with the nuances of the varietals, why wouldn’t you choose a tastier grape to make wine with? Tibby has won numerous international and domestic awards for his wines, and Kalala’s awards reach far across their wine list, from the legendary Dostana’s to the inspired icewines.

Kalala Organic Winery was established in 2006 by Karnail Singh Sidhu, a third generation organic farmer and viticulture consultant. Karnail believes all life

forms have a purpose and work harmoniously when allowed to do so–and indeed the vines at Kalala are flourishing with flora and fauna co-existing peacefully. A combined 44 acres with organic vineyards in Westbank, Kelowna, Osoyoos, and Oliver supply Kalala Winery with abundant, healthy harvests of delicious varietals, and the award-winning wines reflect the harvest. Harmony White and Aspire are already sold out; catch the next batch later this summer. At Kalala the philosophy is simple: let the unique varietal notes and clean organic terroir shine through the wine with minimal handling during the winemaking process.Karnail’s commitment to organic goes far beyond the vines and wines; he holds a vision for the future: a prosperous wine industry in an Organic Okanagan.

CedarCreek estate Winery:Bit of Burgundy in BC

Allen Meadows (burghound.com) was sent 54 wines from 27 Okanagan Pinot Noir producers to review and all three wines sent from CedarCreek were ranked exceptionally well. The provincial leader was 2012 Block 4 Platinum Pinot Noir at 92 points while 2012 Platinum Block 2 Pinot Noir was rated 91 and 2012 Estate Pinot Noir 90. Visit soon because these wines won’t be available for long and the Platinum ones are only offered in their wine shop. Says CedarCreek winemaker Darryl Brooker, “Pinot Noir, known as the heartbreak grape, is emerging as a strength in the Okanagan, and we see this recognition as a direct result of our increased focus on single vineyard block-specific wines.” The wine shop, which is open year round, offers many other award-winning choices because – just as in France’s Burgundy

– wine is the main attraction. A bit of Burgundy is presented in a multitude of ways at CedarCreek as it celebrates a joyous lifestyle in a gorgeous setting. There’s a variety of fun activities and delicious farm-to-table cuisine by Executive Chef Jeremy Tucker to pair along with the wine in the lakeview Vineyard Terrace Restaurant. New this season, dinner is also available and you can reserve online with OpenTable.Join a tour daily at 11 am, 1 pm, or 3 pm, May to October. Or opt into the one-hour Food-and-Wine

In North America, we tend to let our hectic pace force us to ignore our body’s internal clock, while

Mediterranean and Latin American countries have respected these natural biorhythms with a traditional

afternoon business shutdown. You may be familiar with the term “siesta”, which is called “riposo” in Italy. Now Kelowna’s slice of Italy, The Italian Table, which from its beginning encouraged you to gather the whole

family to spend time together and relish in classic favourites from the ‘Nonna (Italian Grandmother) approved’ menu, brings you Riposo Hour. As explained on the “travel beyond vacations” website reidsitaly.com, “During riposo, most museums, churches, shops, businesses–just about everything except restaurants–lower the shutters and lock the doors so that proprietors can either go home (or head to a local trattoria) for a long lunch and perhaps a snooze during the day’s hottest hours.” The great patio at The Italian Table presents a perfect setting to take a page from Italian lifestyle and is home to Riposo Hour, daily from 2 to 5 pm and ALL day Sunday.

Bedecked in Eurostyle patio furniture and colourful garden accents, here you can lounge as you recharge your natural clock, snacking on charcuterie, cheese & antipasto boards for only $10. Sip on $5 Sangria or $5 Peroni–the best selling beer in Italy and a classic symbol of Italian way of life. Select any “specialty” cocktail from the menu for $2 off or tickle your taste buds with $7 Prosecco. Ah, settle in, relax, it truly is “La Dolce Vita”–the good life in the Okanagan! of summer. “Many of the Lake Country wineries like Gray Monk, 50th Parallel, Intrigue and Arrowleaf have wines like these that are staff favourites,” says Tracy. The artisan cheese line at Discover Wines has been expanded to include a selection from Terroir Cheese in Enderby. “There are so many excellent small artisan cheeses we sell that many times people come in for

Summerhill Pyramid Winery- honouring our PaSt, celebrating

the PreSent and reSPectfully Planning for the future

Change is nothing new at Summerhill Pyramid Winery. As a leader in organics and

biodynamics and a world class producer of sparkling wine the winery evolves continuously. On my visit in May some of the changes were dramatic. Others, no less important, were invisible to a visitor.

Across from the building that houses the winery, tasting room and Sunset Organic Bistro, a large excavation site was teeming with workers building forms for a concrete

foundation. Upon that foundation a 20,000-square-foot building will become Summerhill’s new storage warehouse, replacing an equivalent rental space in Kelowna. It will not only allow all wine to be stored on site in a temperature- and humidity-controlled environment and allow easy access, but it will reduce the winery’s carbon footprint as it cuts down on trucking needs. As an added bonus, it will accommodate car parking on the roof. An additional 53 parking spots will be added for the convenience of guests.Inside the main building, renovations to the tasting room and bistro have improved the traffic flow, opened up the available space, and created a quiet ambience in the dining area with the installation of cork flooring. As Canada’s most visited winery, the changes were made to improve customer experience within the facility.A new menu greets diners at Sunset Organic Bistro, reflecting the tastes of new chef Jonas Stadtlander and his team. Additional organic and biodynamic gardens have been created on site under the supervision of Gabe Cipes, one of founder and president Steve Cipes’ three sons who work at the winery. Gabe also has a new low-tech greenhouse that allows him to extend the growing season of plants used to supply the bistro. As a regular visitor to Summerhill, I have come to assume that I will see CEO Ezra Cipes, winemaker Eric von Krosigk and, often, Steve Cipes, when I am on site. I emailed Ezra and got a reply. “I am in England.” For the third time in five years a Canadian delegation of wine and cider makers was hosting a “Canada Calling” event on the eve of the annual London Wine Fair. Canadian producers were pouring samples and educating British wine tradespeople about the burgeoning Canadian wine scene. The event was hosted in Canada House, a familiar sight on Trafalgar Square to Canadians visiting London. Another message arrived from Ezra: “I got a bottle of Cipes Gabriel delivered to Prince Charles today.”

He also suggested I could talk to the winemaker for this story. When I asked Tarrah MacPherson, vice-president operations, about von Krosigk I got another surprise. He was in Portugal, scouting out sources for bottle corks in one of the world’s premier producers. Steve? He was in Texas!Tarrah came to the rescue. The renovated bistro and new menu are clearly a hit. On the Victoria Day weekend more than 200 diners enjoyed lunch each day, and one day a record was set for most lunches served. Evening diners arrived in droves. What about wine sales, I wondered? International sales are increasing dramatically and sales in the wine shop are setting records. With an increasing number of Summerhill organic wines—the Alive label has been embraced by the public—and biodynamic farming practices taking hold, customers are finding the wines to be more and more in line with their own values. The dream that has guided Steve Cipes for a quarter century, one that made him a visionary in the wine business, is now being embraced by the public, which increasingly wants a closer connection to where its food is grown and produced, and to the people involved. Summerhill Pyramid Winery is ready, willing and able to meet those expectations. But Summerhill has always been about more than the wine. Nearly hidden from view from the bistro, near Mallam House (perhaps the oldest existing structure in the area built by white settlers) is a Makwala Kekuli. The Kekuli is a replica of a sacred earth house used by indigenous peoples. Log construction is covered by earth, but logs rot eventually. The earth has been cleared off the structure and rotted logs are being replaced. Nothing to do with wine, but everything to do with what Summerhill Pyramid Winery is all about—honouring our past, celebrating the present and respectfully planning for the future.

More recently, her father Chris Turton had the foresight to replace some of the traditional fresh market varieties with a collection of cider apple varieties such as Bramley, Jersely Chisel, Bulmers Norman, Porters Perfection, Lord Lambourne, Belle de Boskoop and Cox’s Orange Pippin. Cider apples

are thick skinned and tart—perfect for making aromatic, fruity ciders with a nice crisp finish.A refreshing thirst quencher, Wards Hard Apple Cider is a great alternative for people on gluten free diets. Many beer drinkers are embracing hard ciders as their beverage of choice, with the crisp, spicy flavours providing a nice change from hops and malt. “Like biting into a crisp apple,” is the note I made when Jennifer poured a sample of Wards Picker’s Hut Premium Cider. A second sample, Wards Picker’s Hut Winter Spice, proved to be a surprise because it was not a typical winter cider spice bomb. Clean, subtle citrus flavours make it a terrific year-round treat (even if the label does have snowflakes on it). Does a cider a day keep the doctor away, I wonder?Wards Hard Apple Cider and Festive Cider (with just a touch of cherry juice to infuse colour and add more flavour) are sold in 355ml cans. The Picker’s Hut Ciders come in 650ml painted bottles. Ideal for picnics and just about any outdoor activity, Wards Ciders are a tribute to Jennifer’s five generations of Ward and Turton family history in Kelowna.

Small yet mighty from its beginning, micro bar.bites debuted in downtown

Kelowna as if it has always been there. The new patio radiates that same attention to detail and is a masterpiece of wood in which you’ll feel right at home. The spectacular tables were handcrafted by Wil Brundula of Heartland Millworks. He built that 65-foot centrepiece bar inside micro as well as the front door and beautiful trestle communal table at RauDZ. Completing the patio’s warm character is vintage fir flooring and cedar railing posts and trim. With seating for 11 to augment the inside’s 34-seat capacity, arrive early because it’s the perfect spot to enjoy a cold pint of beer or bottle from the revolving selection. The bottle list currently contains 18 beers from around the world and around the corner with Tree Brewing’s Grapefruit Radler and the ‘Best of the Fest’ winner from the Okanagan Beer Festival, Parallel 49 Brewing Company’s

Seedspitter WatermelonWit. Experience the IPA from C h i c a g o ’ s G o o s e Island Beer C o m p a n y , which won Gold at the Great A m e r i c a n Beer Festival and at the World Beer Cup Awards. Or for a thirst quencher in summer’s heat, how about Pacifico Mexican Pilsner, Red Stripe Jamaican Lager or Maui Brewing Coconut Porter? To sip on the patio, along with ‘spot on’ beers in bottles or from the eight rotating taps, micro has a new summer cocktail list and an ever-changing wine selection. Hungry? There’s also a great tapas menu that changes monthly and routinely offers a few surprises.

A Winery DestinAtion in DoWntoWn KeloWnA – sAnDhill Wines

Sandhill, in constructing a grand tasting room in their historic Richter Street winery last

year, has easily created the most comfortable winery destination in Kelowna. As the marquis brand for Calona Wines, Sandhill is producing top quality wines from six unique vineyards throughout the Okanagan and Similkameen Valleys. While they are proud of these vineyards they also recognize that the grapes don’t just grow themselves. They honour the grape growers, some of whom have spent their whole lives on their vineyards, with photos of both the people and their vineyards on the walls. Both are important to the Sandhill story for visitors.Once the grapes arrive at the winery, they are turned over to master winemaker Howard Soon. Sandhill’s wines are focused on single-vineyard, single-variety wines with a small number of blended wines. The Sandhill wines, with bright white labels, have all of the favourite varieties including

Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Syrah, and Merlot among others. The Sandhill Small Lots series offers more adventurous and exotic varieties not often found in the Okanagan like Sangiovese, Barbera, and Malbec and special single vineyard offerings of Viognier, Syrah, and Chardonnay among others. The Small Lots series also includes three unique blends called “One”, “Two”, and “Three”. There’s more than just a tasting bar in this wine shop. A lounge full of soft easy chairs and comfy sofas is located just around the corner near the Small Lots Barrel Cellar for the ultimate in comfortable wine tasting. While it’s a good place to rest on your wine tour, it’s the perfect place to spend a Friday evening during Sandhill’s Happy Hour from 5-7pm. Wines by the glass for $5 and food available onsite from Culinary Ink Food-Bike. For locals it’s a perfect way to end your week. For visitors, it’s a great kickoff to your weekend!

Saturdays at Sandhill mean it’s time for Flight Club. “It’s a guided tasting of six wines on a different theme each week,” explains David Mann, estate manager for Sandhill. Themes may include “The Art of Blending”, “Food & Wine Pairing”, and “Blind Tasting” and are guaranteed to be a fun way to test your tasting skills. Space is limited and must be booked in advance. Held every Saturday from 7-9pm Flight Club costs $25 per person. Not just a special summer event, it will be held year round. If you are looking to rent a convenient location for a special event, what better place than a winery? The lounge area and the Small Lots Barrel Room are both available for private bookings. The lounge can accommodate up to 210 people and the Small Lots Barrel Room up to 46. Contact the winery for more information.

PILGRIM & PEARL: PURVEYOR OF EPICUREAN GEMS

Once you’ve experienced Kelowna’s Pilgrim & Pearl, you may subscribe to the

sentiment expressed by author Nelson DeMille, who said, “We’re all pilgrims on the same journey – but some pilgrims have better road maps.” The team at The Revival Group – a collection of exemplary eating and drinking establishments in which Pilgrim & Pearl is a shiny facet – clearly has found the path to procure the finest epicurean gems. Launched as the Okanagan’s first oyster bar with a central shuck-and-steam station and extensive fresh seafood focus, it caters to the carnivore in your group with blackboard butcher-cuts features-of-the-day. To match the exceptional culinary program and stylish decor, Pilgrim & Pearl proudly presents BC’s first list comprised exclusively of “Grower Champagnes” and Sparkling wines, including Canadian bubbly from coast to coast. These wines are produced by the same estate that owns the vineyards from which the grapes originate. Whether it’s the official Champagnes, or sparkling wines from France, Italy, Canada and other countries, the respect for terroir

and artisanal approach is shared. This dynamic, world-class offering demonstrates just how special are the wines made in our own backyard and how they can stand next to anyone’s, including the European wines that inspired them. In addition, an impressive selection of red and white wines, beer, cider and cocktails

are available. Derek Morrison, professional sommelier, who was recently welcomed as General Manager/Wine Director, created this international list for Pilgrim & Pearl’s opening and continues to curate it as well as the beverage programs throughout The Revival Group’s restaurant and lounge portfolio. Morrison was previously at Hedonism Wines, Europe’s largest wine boutique and the Decanter London Wine Merchant of the Year, 2013.

PINOT

PEOPLE

PLACE

A lot of the thought that owners Curtis Krouzel and Sheri-Lee Turner-Krouzel put

into planning 50th Parallel Estate Winery revolved around Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris. So it’s little wonder that these wines receive much of the attention in the vineyard and in the cellar. The vineyards were oriented so as to provide shade to Pinot Noir clusters (which are particularly susceptible to sun

damage) at the hottest time of day in the summer. Winemaker Grant Stanley has been famously enamored with the variety and brings a considerable amount of knowledge to 50th Parallel’s top wine as well as the other wines in the portfolio. All of their wines have now won major awards at wine competitions but the Pinot Gris in particular has been getting a lot of the

buzz this year. It took the top prize, a Double Gold Medal, for that variety at the All Canadian Wine Championships. Three other Gold Medal winners in that same category came from three of 50th Parallel’s neighbours on The Scenic Sip wine route. Clearly Pinot Gris is becoming something special the Lake Country area. The complete portfolio of wines, along with their others white

wines made from Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer, and Riesling, is available to taste at the winery’s tasting bar. Located in the near end of their winery, guests are immersed in theambiance of a working wine cellar while tasting the current releases. Completed in 2014, it is a far cry from their original Quonset hut winery, which used to be located nearby. The past was not completely discarded however; the new tasting bar is made out of beams that were salvaged from the Quonset hut. From the “roots to the fruits”... Meet me at the 50th.

Loving Life in the vines

When Gitta Pederson moved to Naramata in 1993, she helped

establish the Poplar Grove winery hands on, from taking down the existing apple orchard with a chainsaw, to planting and tending the vines. Today, she’s still hands on with six acres of her own vineyard where two acres of Pinot Gris, two of Merlot and two of Cabernet Franc are sold to Lock & Worth and Laughing Stock Wineries. In those early days it was difficult to make a living, but a passion for the land and looking after the vines sustained the commitment through harder financial times. The vines grew and so did the winery and since the perfect accompaniment to wine is cheese, Gitta helped establish, and now owns, Poplar Grove Cheese. Gitta knows every step of her business, from planting and pruning in the vineyard and fixing the tractor and irrigation, to knowing how to make all varieties of cheese. “Cheese making has it’s challenges, and like raising children, each one has it’s own unique characteristics and each one is loved for their unique qualities,” she explains, from the subtle zing of the creamy Naramata Blue to the feistier bite of Tiger Blue. C Cheese, like teenagers, can be difficult to predict.

The success of Poplar Grove Cheese is testimony to Gitta’s acumen as a businesswoman and cheese maker, but she has no plans to expand her business ventures. To grow a business often means loss of control over quality, and Gitta’s commitment to providing her clients with the best possible product, in both the vineyard and the cheesery, ensures the focus is on quality, not quantity. During the busy spring and summer months, life can be hectic, but in the vineyard she finds peace and contentment.Gitta’s life has taken many turns, as a nurse, traveler, businesswoman and mother, but all paths have led to this point. Amongst the vines and weather you can find her tending the grapes on the southern slopes of the Naramata Bench. The landscape has changed over the years. When she arrived there were just 17 wineries in British Columbia; today there are over 200. While many mourn the loss of orchards, Gitta is glad to see the prosperity wine tourism has brought to the wineries and farmers. She sees a bright future for an Okanagan wine industry that holds a vision of quality production while maintaining a focus on local community and sustainable growth. Originally from Denmark, Gitta has made her home in Naramata,

where her connection to the land here has grown with the vines she planted. She is one of the many women in BC, from Cawston to the Kooteneys, who are the backbone of their homes, communities, and the boutique businesses that keep the economy strong.

But with maturing vineyards and a string of great vintages allowing the winery’s production to double to 20,000 cases came the desire to create two staple wines—“foundation wines”, as the winery’s marketing manager John Pullen describes them—that would over deliver for the price. “These wines would be exemplary of the style and quality you would expect from Church & State, introducing new people to winery and portfolio. These two wines would take everything we’ve learned from a decade of viticulture and winemaking and present it in a unique, South Valley style. We wanted these wines to show our style and focus on quality to a broader group of wine drinkers.” But how to sell them in a market that offers consumers thousands of choices?“The biggest difficulty with introducing a new line like this is that it has to be compelling enough for people to just want to pick it up and try it,” John says. “In essence it had to be so interesting just sitting on the shelf that it gets the first chance, and then having the wine in the

bottle be impressive enough that people would want to get it again, and again.”Enter design guru Bernie Hadley-Beauregard, whose Brandever firm has won countless awards for labels like Blasted Church and Dirty Laundry. Bernie has a simple belief that drives what he does. “The label gets the first date, the wine gets the second.”“I think we have a lot in common with Bernie and the way he looks at things,” John says. “With this new project we were envisioning he was a perfect fit. He brought his whole team and dropped by the tasting bar unannounced. It was a weekend in August, so our outdoor patio tasting bar was at full clip. I think we had a Queen concert playing, kids are running around on the lawn, their parents sitting at the bar on the edge of the bowl tasting wine or relaxing with a glass. The winery is a pretty wild spot, really upbeat. We play a lot of rock concerts and it’s generally just a really fun place to be. There are not many tasting bars with such a vibrant atmosphere--it’s really a unique experience.

“When we spoke with Bernie the next week, he said he couldn’t connect our labels to the staff and environment at the winery. We decided together on creating a new series that captured the vibe at the Coyote Bowl tasting bar--something that complimented the serious, traditional style of our Church & State labels.”“There is an incredible amount of cheap wine that is embellished with faux-chateau labels, the lipstick-on-a-pig scenario,” Bernie says. “People believe that it must be good if it has such a stately label. That, to me, is a disservice.” Consumers, he says, are overwhelmed by choice.Brandever and Church and State went to work, creating the Lost Inhibitions series of 100 labels, each containing a phrase that will trigger a memory from conversations past. “We worked with Bernie to create Lost Inhibitions,” says John. “His team put in countless hours crafting each letter, which were hand cut and stitched from felts and fabrics - in all Karen and Emily created over 1,200 letters and symbols.”

Nature has bestowed beauty and benefit to every wine growing

region in the Okanagan Valley, but few are as blessed as the Naramata Bench. Located on the southeast shore of Lake Okanagan, between the village of Naramata and the City of Penticton, this small 15-kilometre plateau is a marvel of agricultural elegance and dramatic vistas. But there is more to the Naramata Bench than pastoral beauty. The area is also renowned for its remarkable  terroir. Here a wide range of Vitis vinifera grape varieties thrive in diverse soils and near perfect growing conditions, which helps explain the concentration of so many renowned wineries in such a limited area. The Naramata Bench is a place notable also for the colourful collection of men and women who own and operate the region’s vineyards and wineries.

• 2 ¼ cups all-purpose flour• 1 teaspoon baking powder

• ½ teaspoon baking soda• ¼ teaspoon salt

• 2/3 cup granulated sugar• 3 large eggs

• 3 tablespoons honey• ½ teaspoon pure vanilla

extract• 2 tablespoons orange zest

• ½ cup coarsely chopped hazelnuts

• 1 tablespoon dried culinary lavender blossoms

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

Line a baking sheet with parchment paper

In one bowl for dry, sift flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt together.

In a second bowl, whisk sugar and eggs to a light lemon color; stir in honey, vanilla extract, orange zest, chopped hazelnuts and lavender blossoms.

Sprinkle dry ingredients over the egg mixture; fold in until the dough is just combined.

Use just enough flour on your hands to prevent sticking, you don’t want the logs to be covered with flour, shape the dough into two logs.

Place the log on the parchment lined baking sheet and with your hands, pat and shape each piece into a loaf approximately 3 inches wide, 7 inches long, and 3/4-inch high.

Bake 25 minutes or until dough pops back up when lightly pressed with a finger. You cannot judge the cooking by the color. The biscotti shouldn’t change color during the second baking, so poke them to tell if they’re done. They should feel dry and offer some resistance. Remove from oven and cool 10 minutes on a wire rack.

Reduce oven to 275 degrees F. Using a long serrated knife, cut logs diagonally into 1/2-inch thick slices. Turn the slices over, onto their sides; return slices, on baking sheets, to oven. Bake another 15 minutes. Do not crowd the biscotti slices on the baking sheet for their second baking as they need the hot air to circulate to enable them to crisp up evenly. Biscotti will continue to crisp up as they cool so do not over bake. Remove from oven and cool completely on wire racks.

Store biscotti in an airtight container.
