WINE GLASS WRITER – THE WINE PARTY ESSENTIALRemember how cool wine charms

where when they came out? What an amazing invention—a way to remember which wine glass is yours. As a hostess, there is nothing worse than seeing three times the number of empty wine glasses, many with wine in them, at the end of an event all because your guests forgot which glass was theirs and grabbed a new one. Alas, the charms had the same effect…a couple of glasses of wine later and one tends to forget which charm was theirs. However, forgetting your name is another story. The Wine Glass Writer is the genius invention of Californian Jeannine Fradelizio. These wonderful pens write on glass (as well as glazed ceramics, mirrors etc) and then can be easily washed off in the dishwasher! Not only super serviceable, they are also so much fun and provide entertainment allowing guests to get creative with their wine glass designs. So great, the WALL STREET JOURNAL listed them in the TOP 5 Wine Accessories of the year. Wine Glass Writers are certified ASTM - D4236 non-toxic the ink dries in 1-2 minutes and is virtually odorless so it does not interfere with a wine’s bouquet.Jeannine’s daughter Renée Stewart, operations & sales manager, now lives in Penticton after meeting and falling in love with a Canadian while abroad.

Renée is here spreading the word about her family company’s fabulous writers, and we agree that every household needs a package or two on hand. Personally, I give the writers as hostess gifts and they make the perfect present for friends who entertain. We also use the Wine Glass Writers at our Wine Party Festivals—people absolutely LOVE them and it helps us with the same issue of controlling the number of glassware used. The writers are currently available at select wine shops and retailers in the Okanagan and will be for sale at our upcoming wine festivals! They also come in different colours, including metallics.

Spring blasted into the Okanagan full force last month pushing us happily into another early growing season. Who knows what Mother Nature has in store for us this year, but no matter what, there is no place better to be than wine country. Here is where we eat, drink and celebrate local and Spring heralds the releases of the first highly anticipated 2015 vintages. Wine buzz is that the crazy weather last year has resulted in some damn good wine! There are plenty of amazing food and drink events to enjoy throughout our glorious province ahead, so plan your calendars carefully and try to partake in as many parties as possible. As well, we remind you to plan wine/drink tours to have the chance to meet the incredible characters behind the labels. We are truly a unique wine country, because in many tasting rooms, you can still have the experience of meeting and chatting with the winemakers and owners.

Enjoy every moment of the colourful Spring season, shop direct from your local farmers and artisans and support the future of our amazing agriculture industry.

PS We have also changed our layout and paper stock to reflect the feeling of our beautiful, earthy wine country! Hope you love it!

SIP AND SAVOUR LANGLEY’SLATEST OFFERINGS

Whether you are coming and going through the Fraser Valley, or you smartly take a couple days to stay and explore, Langley’s wineries, breweries and restaurants are worthy of your attention.

You may have noticed the winery signs as you drive along Highway 1; there are now seven. Each winery is unique, and there’s everything from estate wines and lunch at Chaberton Estate Winery & Bacchus Bistro, fruit preserves, walnut wine along with grape-based wines at Vista d’Oro Farms & Winery, and a full selection fruit wines of the Fort Wine Company.  Many wineries offer cheese and meat plates and the vineyards make a wonderful setting for a picnic. The ever-evolving craft beer scene hasn’t left Langley untouched, and beer lovers are bound to have visited, or at least sampled, the brews of Dead Frog Brewery. In fact it’s no surprise that the scene is thriving here given that the local University, Kwantlen Polytechnic, offers one of only three brew courses in Canada, attracting students from around the world.Trading Post Brewing is the newest addition to Langley’s craft brew scene. Each Thursday the brewery taps a unique cask, the latest was a tropical wheat ale with kaffir lime, and there’s a collaboration

brew in the works with Cartems donuts; Homer Simpson would definitely approve. The team is also opening a location this spring in Fort Langley where they will serve locally grown fare along with their eclectic brews.Rounding out the sipping scene is a cidery, scheduled to open at the end of May. Fraser Valley Cider Company has their own orchard and is focusing on crafting cider with heritage apples that are indigenous to the region in their first releases. Plans are to incorporate other local fruits and berries into future batches. The Langley food scene continues to flourish with a full array of both locally owned restaurants with passionate chefs creating fare with locally grown products to the popular chains that have positioned Langley as the test kitchen for new, creative concepts. Langley has been home to the beginning of many popular

restaurants, for example, the Tidball Family of The Keg restaurant fame came from the city. The latest to open their doors, London Bull, from the Brown’s Restaurant group, as well as S. & L. and the Oak & Thorne, both Joseph Ricard Group products.  You won’t find many menus in downtown Vancouver’s diverse and eclectic food scene where a product, wine or brew is not from Langley. Langley also offers many quaint bed and breakfasts complimented by full service hotels, so why not spend a night or two and discover the sip trail yourself.

Beginning with the first issues of British Columbia Wine Trails in 1991, founding editor David Gamble originally sought out as much information from local wineries as he could get. “We provided and opportunity for the wineries to talk to their potential customers,” explains Gamble looking back in 2016. “It was always meant to be a consumer publication. What would the consumers want to know?”

by Luke Whittall

fe atu r e

The early issues were fi lled with stories about the Okanagan Valley, the people who made wine, sneak previews of new wineries that were just starting production, and speculations on the quality of the vintage. The growing readership of wine lovers became excited to read about new wines and new wineries on the horizon. Wineries were extremely enthusiastic for an outlet to tell their story through this new wine-oriented publication and were more than happy to provide anything Gamble needed to know. “There was always more information than we could use,” recalls Gamble.Within the fi rst few years, a clear layout style emerged that grouped articles and advertisements together by geographical region. Each region had its own original map to help readers locate the wineries and other producers as well as local resorts, restaurants, and attractions to help people plan their excursions. That regionally-focused style has largely been maintained to the present, although with mobile technology today the maps are less needed today than they were in the 1990’s.The articles were all about wine: wine making, wine tasting, wine and food culture, and the progress of the wine industry. Early articles featured the youthful stories of a growing new wine industry and culture. “To what heights can Okanagan Valley wines aspire?” reads the inquisitive fi rst line from an early article in 1991. Another early article featured views from pioneering vineyard owner Joe Busnardo of Divino Winery who suggested that the Okanagan was at least 20 years away from developing its own wine style. Busnardo said not to “expect carbon copies of California Cabernet” but rather, “appreciate the different characteristics” from Okanagan-grown grapes. The spring 1992 issue proudly announced forthcoming wineries to BC’s newest wine-growing region, Vancouver Island, and featured profi les

of the people who would soon create Blue Grouse, Vignetti Zanatta, and Venturi-Schulze among others. Part wine exploration and part Wim Wenders-style soul-searching, BC Wine Trails provided a critically important new forum for education and discovery about the new industry in BC. The educational element was an important part of the magazine. Nearly coinciding with the birth of BC Wine Trails, the British Columbia Wine Institute (BCWI) was created in 1990. Founding BCWI Executive Director Nick Clark recognized the importance of a publication dedicated to BC wine and was a huge supporter from its inception. The new Vintner’s Quality Alliance (VQA) quality standards program had just been launched and BC Wine Trails was the perfect place to help wine consumers learn about what it was. VQA was the fi rst attempt at quality standards in BC ’s wine history and became a symbol of a new generation of quality wine producers. It distinguished the new, quality-driven wines from the “block and tackle” jug wines that had previously dominated BC’s wine industry. Clark’s successor Christine Coletta, continued to use BC Wine Trails as an educational outlet by contributing regular feature columns and large BCWI promotion campaigns. The BC wine industry fundamentally changed more in the 1990’s than at any other time in its history. By the end of the millennium, BC’s wine industry was clearly breaking away from its jug wine past. More than any other publication, British Columbia Wine Trails documented much of those changes but, over the next ten years, would start going through changes of its own.

Part two of a four part story – stay tuned for the July/August edition of BC Food & Wine Trails Magazine to continue the story.

40 KNOTS VINEYARD & ESTATE WINERY BY THE SEAThis 24-acre property boasts a

20-acre vineyard, winery with tasting lounge and vineyard terrace located in Comox above the Powell River Ferry dock. First vines were planted in 2005 with majority being rootstock brought in from France. Varieties are Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, Gamay Noir, Chardonnay, Pinot Auxerrois, Siegerrebe, and Schonberger.   Layne and Brenda farm traditionally with the aid of bees, chickens, ducks, geese and sheep

to produce clean natural grapes for traditional wine making. Winemaker Matt Dumayne of Okanagan Crush Pad, originally from New Zealand, now into his 30th vintage, has racked up many awards and accolades for 40 Knots wine portfolio.  And although 40 Knots appreciates the confi rmation this brings, owners Brenda Hetman-Craig and Layne Robert Craig, say the true confi rmation that excellent wines have been produced comes from their ability

to sell out of all vintages to very loyal customers and growing fan base.Fans are encouraged to join the wine club. A full membership includes: Delivery of a special selection of 12 bottles every 3 months AND 15% off AND free shipping. The selection will include special new wines and vintages before release to the public. Selection

Jack & Hazel Manser 110 Timms Road, Salmon Arm, BC 250-832-0155

At picturesque Larch Hills Winery near Salmon Arm, they’re heralding the start of summer with the release of several of the newest offerings. The 2015 Lemburger is a medium-to-full bodied wine, described by Proprietor Hazel Manser as “full raspberry fl avour.”“Lots of people love it. You can chill it and serve it on its own, and it goes great with Italian food,” she says.April releases included the Grandview Bench, a blend of varietals featuring Shiraz grapes for the fi rst time this year. Try it as a stand-alone wine or pair it with steak or any barbecue. New whites include the unique cool-climate Seigerrebe, which Hazel describes as “sunshine in a bottle.” Also look for their Pinot Gris, at under $15 a bottle, and the Ortega, which promises

a delightful citrusy fi nish. And don’t miss out on the new Rosé, a true rosé with lots of bubbles. Hazel recommends it as a great lunch wine. “We make good wine, offer it at reasonable prices and create a long-lasting bond with our clients,” says Hazel. “We have a lot of faithful followers!”Hazel and her husband Jack have owned Larch Hills for 12 years, and they’re hands-on with every aspect of this special winery.

Savour the flavours of our unique, award-winning vintages, and experience the harmony of our wines and this peaceful setting in the beautiful Shuswap.

At Recline Ridge Winery near Salmon Arm, you’ll fi nd one of the most charming and unique wine shops in the region. A beautiful log structure nestled in the heart of the Shuswap, this picturesque setting is home to some delicious cool climate wines.“We focus on cool climate varietals we can grow in the Shuswap,” says Proprietor

Graydon Ratzlaff. “We produce 12 different wines, including 5 whites, a dry rose, 4 reds, and 2 desserts. Our wine shop and tasting bar offer tastings with our friendly and knowledgeable staff.``Spring is the ideal time to sample some of Recline Ridge’s new releases and all-time favorites. Graydon recommends you try their 2013 Marechal Foch; the quirkily-named 2013 Just Being Frank and the 2012 Too Many. The new Marechal Foch is full-bodied with lots of plum, cherry and dark fruit tastes and a very smooth, smoky fi nish which is characteristic of the grape. Try it with red meat or cheese. Recline Ridge has released their third vintage of Just Being Frank, made from Blaufrankisch grapes, an Austrian varietal that is light, fruity and aromatic. It is rich – but not heavy - in tannins. Their 2012 Too Many, aptly named for the proliferation of cats onsite, is made from 100 per cent Zweigelt grapes. Light and wonderfully aromatic, this fruity beauty is best served with red meats or a lighter fare such as roast duck. Recline Ridge is a charming addition to your 2016 wine tour itinerary!

ELEGANT EAU VIVRE WINERY

A TASTE OF FORBIDDEN FRUIT AND SENSUOUS WINES

Eau Vivre WInery is all about focus in 2016. The new streamlined portfolio for this boutique Similkameen Valley winery is focusing on the elegant style of wines that have made them famous. The portfolio is featuring two white wines, Viognier and Riesling, and three reds,

Pinot Noir, Malbec, and Cabernet Franc. Owner Dale Wright is excited about focusing on these wines and building on their strengths.Clearly, one of those strengths is Pinot Noir. Their Pinot has garnered quite a reputation over the past few years. Eau

Vivre has won the Lieutenant Governor’s Award for Excellence in BC Wine twice for two different vintages and they are still currently the only Similkameen Valley winery to have ever won that award at all. As well, late last year the 2013 Pinot Noir took a Double-Gold medal at the International Pinot Challenge, adding another feather in the cap for this elegant wine. The new Pinot Noir 2014 was released earlier in the winter and is exceeding expectations so far. “People are loving it,” says Dale. “2014 is going to be just

as good, if not better. I like it better personally.” Dale credits the slightly higher acidity in the 2014 which gives the wine a much brighter flavour and style. As one of the most consistent Pinot Noirs in the province, it also provides one of the best values at $22 per bottle. Eau Vivre will be featuring their new wines at the Devour Food Film Fest in Osoyoos in early May and the wine shop is open 10:30 to 5pm throughout the summer. Follow them at EauVivreWinery.ca or on Facebook and Twitter.

The vines and fruit trees grow wildly under their care, and the care is apparent in the wine.Forbidden Fruit has won over 200 medals for their wines over the years, including top medals in grape and fruit wine categories both nationally and internationally. The tasting room is intimate and friendly; visitors should not miss the opportunity to taste Impearfection, the only wine of its kind made from a late harvest Asian pear, or the Apricot Mistelle, described by judges as dangerously delicious.

The wine is a reflection of the land, and in the gallery Kim’s artwork is an artistic expression of nature’s bounty; inspired no doubt by the 147-acre certified organic vineyard and nature reserve, where bears wander by the river and bald eagles fly past the patio. And with great hospitality, Steve and Kim provide a guesthouse where visitors can stay awhile and enjoy a little piece of paradise.

SLOW DOWN AND SIP WINE IN THESUNSHINE AT CLOS DU SOLEIL

FAIRVIEW CELLARS – SPECTACULAR SAUVIGNON BLANC

Visitors to the Similkameen Valley will enjoy getting off the well-travelled wine trail into this quiet corner of B.C.’s wine country where life slows down, and sipping fine wine in the sunshine is the only item on the agenda. And where better to sip in the sunshine than at Clos Du Soleil organic vineyard and winery on the Similkameen Valley’s Upper Bench.Clos du Soleil produces elegant age-worthy wines from European varietals that reflect the unique terroir of the Similkameen Valley. Serious oenophiles will enjoy a menu of elegant blends from quality varietals, and adventurous oenophiles will enjoy exploring this little known region of BC wine country. Biodynamic methods have been integrated into the vineyard where a focus on soil nourishment provides a rich terroir, and following the rhythms of nature guides the growth of quality varietals.

Only the most committed vintners follow Biodynamics, the time and dedication demanded is intense, but the reward is in the wine, and it’s making the international wine community pay respect to Biodynamic wines. Wine lovers can taste the difference at the new tasting room; open seven days a week from April 30th. A tasting room experience awaits visitors, where a window to the winery offers a view of the winemaking process, concepts of Biodynamics can be explored in conversation, and an exciting selection of new releases including Signature 2016, the flagship award-winning Bordeaux blend, will excite the palate. Visit closdusoleil.com, to access to the wine club, Soleil 160, where member benefits include preferential pricing and notification of special events.

Like many winery owners and winemakers, Fairview Cellars owner Bill Eggert loves bottling day. It’s an exciting time with lots of activity around the winery. It’s also when all of the hard work from the vineyard can finally be shared with everyone. Bill’s assembled troops were busy bottling the 2015 Sauvignon Blanc while hopping along to a classic rock soundtrack on the stereo.Fairview’s Sauvignon Blanc has become the darling of the portfolio, slowly developing its own cult-like following

among those who enjoy this vibrant variety. A supremely-crafted wine, it is a perfect match for seafood but is also equally at home as a sipping wine. This will be the function for the 2015 vintage in particular as the long and hot growing season has made for a beautifully ripe and full-flavoured version of this wine. It is still the crisp and refreshing wine that it was in previous vintages, but with a newly profound depth of flavour.Variations over the vintages are what keeps wine interesting and Bill is not afraid to experiment with tradition.

2014 Gusto BiancoSauvignon Blanc was fermented using a different kind of yeast to arrive at another different style of wine. Complex aromas of ripe ambrosia apples, lemon meringue, dried flowers, and wet minerals mark this wine currently and it finishes off-dry which gives it a unique sense of smoothness. In the 10 months since I first tasted this wine, it has evolved slowly from overtly fruity to take on more mineral and floral notes. No doubt it will continue to evolve beautifully over time.

AMAZING WINES TO DISCOVER ATC.C. JENTSCH CELLARS IN OLIVER

TERRAFINA: TUSCAN ROOTS BLOSSOMING INTO EXPANDED EUROPEAN SPECIALS

C.C. Jentsch Cellars wants you to know where they are. It’s not hard to find them but somehow their winery on Highway 97 south of Oliver gets missed. With a large parking lot, two entrances, a neon sign, and a large oak barrel sitting on the side of the road, there is no longer any reason to drive by this winery. You will be missing more than a winery; you will be missing out on some amazing wines. With a cascade of awards in 2015, the wines of C.C. Jentsch (rhymes with “bench”) received a lot of attention last year. Winemaker Amber Pratt’s astute handling of grapes grown on the Golden Mile Bench since 2013 have brought out a consistency of style that will be the focus of the Small Lots series of wines. The Small Lots to be released this season include the 2014 Malbec, 2015 Viognier, and 2015 Chardonnay along with two highly anticipated newcomers to the portfolio: the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon and 2014 Cabernet Franc. All Small Lots wines are extremely limited so don’t miss the opportunity to get yours.

Of course not all of the wines will be single varieties. Fans of their flagship wines The Chase and The Quest will be able to sample those throughout the summer. The Dance, the popular rosé will not be available for the 2015 vintage however there are still 2014’s available to meet all of your rosé needs. All wine will be available mainly in the wine shop, which is open daily 10-6 throughout the summer. C.C. Jentsch has even installed convenient Tesla and EV-60 chargers for your EV while you relish in tasting their small lots. Don’t miss it!

Committed to building on Terrafina’s fine reputation for its Tuscan take on local, seasonal cuisine, new owners Erwin Huber and Cindy Evans are excited to enrich the selection for guests. Erwin’s heritage is half Italian; he was born in Switzerland and is fluent in Italian and several other languages, truly bringing an international perspective. Drawing upon the extensive talents of Chef Jenna Pillon and her culinary passion, Terrafina will include European dishes that blossom beyond its tried and true Tuscan menu. With Erwin’s training in hotel management and fine cuisine in Lucerne and experience as proprietor of a boutique inn at Whistler, Cindy’s extensive business acumen as a realtor, and their enthusiasm to embrace the South Okanagan community as their permanent home, it’ll be fun to experience the enhancements. The day I visited, Erwin and Cindy were elbows deep in sprucing up the patio for spring and the perennially stunning Terrafina was aglow with fresh eyes on its every detail. They were delighted

to have welcomed many guests since opening three days prior and looking forward to Easter and the fourth annual Bubbles and Pizza Grazing event hosted in April for the Osoyoos Oyster Festival. Plans were firmly in place for the Mother’s Day Brunch in May and a Father’s Day event in June. Go to terrafinarestaurant.com for updates and details on events.Terrafina’s team will continue to work closely with Hester Creek Estate Winery and offer settings at the restaurant or in one of the private rooms at Hester Creek for private functions and catering. EAT LOCAL ATBURROWING OWL WINERY’SSONORA ROOM

DESERT HILLS – A DESTINATION WINERY IN OLIVER

Founded in 1997 on vines that were planted in the ‘80s, Burrowing Owl Winery has long been an industry leader in sustainability and environmental awareness. It’s a foundational commitment that’s at the core of the iconic winery’s philosophy yet you may not be aware that it is also reflected in the onsite restaurant – the Sonora Room.Named for the desert that the winery is situated in, the Sonora Room sources virtually all of its ingredients from the local Oliver-area, more specifically at the Petit Clos Farm which is only a quick stroll from the winery. Even the Arctic Char is raised at an ethical-practices fish farm that’s visible from the patio.

This commitment to local food means that the menu is never static but rather changes with the season and the harvest, making now an optimal time to visit for a meal. Spring in the Okanagan brings with it an array of crops, including a rich diversity of vegetables, resulting in a menu of eclectic choices. Of course, should you be reading this article in a different season an updated menu is always available online. However, a meal at the Sonora Room wouldn’t be complete without a bottle of Burrowing Owl wine to pair with it. Take advantage the wine library on hand at the restaurant and have dinner with a bottle of 1997 Burrowing Owl Merlot or the winery’s 1999 Pinot Noir. The Sonora Room prides itself on the fact that this amazing collection of wines has never left the site but rather was grown, produced, cellared, and enjoyed all on the same property. After all, does it really get any more local then that?

~ Blake Allen

The winery has been around for years but Desert Hills south of Oliver on the Black Sage Bench is slowly becoming a proper destination, a place to stop and enjoy what wine country is all about. The beautiful patio next to the tasting room will soon be featuring an Indian-style tapas menu from a new kitchen facility. Concerts, barrel cellar long-table dinners, and other big events are also in the works for the near future.More than that, a new label called Ursa Major will be making its debut at a special event in June. The name is a tribute to an annoying, but persistent bear that frequently leads her cubs to the bottom rows of the Desert Hills vineyard to eat grapes. Perhaps the honor of inspiring a wine’s name will outweigh her taste for grapes and she will find other food sources. Started by Desert Hill’s owner Randy Toor’s son Rajen, the wines are ultra-premium quality and will soon be featured in a new winery located further north on Black Sage Road.

2011 Desert Hills MirageTheir flagship wine, it offers aromas of plums, licorice, dark chocolate, and tobacco leaf. The palate is full, rich, and ripe with big black fruits, dark chocolate, vanilla, and baking spice flavours. One of the Okanagan’s best Bordeaux-style blends.

2012 Ursa Major SyrahHuge aromas plums, smoke, nutmeg, pepper, cloves, allspice, dried herbs, and cinnamon. The palate is equally full with plums, smoke, blackberries, plum jam, herbs, and orange rind. For power and complexity, Ursa Major Syrah is quite simply, a wonderful beast.

GEHRINGER BROTHERS – SUPERSTAR 2015 VINTAGE RAISES THE BAR

SMILE-INDUCING WINES AT OLIVER TWIST WINERY

Sauvignon Blanc will start off the 2015 vintage releases at Gehringer Brothers Estate Winery this season. The vintage was another long, hot growing season that has made for an intensely flavoured, rich style of wine that is sure to be popular in the tasting room. When it was bottled, owner Walter Gehringer knew that something was a little different. “This is the most intense I’ve seen it in a while,” he explained. “The whole bottling room was filled with its aroma.”  The difference comes down to the vintage. “We’re finding that the flavours, weights, and textures are richer and fuller in 2015 compared to 2014.” Because 2014 was also an amazing year, the expectation for 2015 was a larger crop of grapes since there was no cold winter to damage the vines in between. What happened at harvest was unexpectedly lower volumes of juice than predicted. “The yield per ton from the berries was smaller,” explains Gehringer. “The result is more intense flavours.” It seems the bar that was set very high in 2014 has now been raised even higher. The big question with 2015 was how August’s wildfire on Mt. Kobau affected

the grapes. “The fire had no influence at all,” says Gehringer. The smoke at their level was cold and the most of the valley-filling smoke was from the U.S. and not Mt. Kobau. Analyses on the grapes yielded no critical differences and tastings of the wines have confirmed it.

2015 Sauvignon BlancIntense aromas of ripe apples, gooseberries, flinty minerals, and small flowers. The palate is fuller than any previous Sauvignon Blanc with more ripe apples, citrus peel, and fresh herbs.

Nostalgia: “A sentimental longing or wistful affection for the past, typically for a period or place with happy personal associations.” Now, also, a series of wines with smile-inducing labels (and contents!) at Oliver Twist Estate Winery.“Here at Oliver Twist Estate Winery we are all about vintages. Whether it’s in the vineyard, the vintage of wine, vintage cars, music and art. We love it so much that we created a new artist wine series called “NOSTALGIA.” Come by during Spring Wine Festival (through May 8th) for a complimentary tasting,” says owner-winemaker Gina Mitchell. “And keep an eye out—we will be releasing more NOSTALGIA wines in the near future!”Fun-loving Gina and her team (Judy and Cheryle-“aka The Twisted Sisters, and Marilyn and Brittney) love events and 2016 will be no exception. A third annual Show, Shine…and Wine? event is being planned for June, featuring hot rods and classic cars on site, pinup girl contests, prizes, oldies music, a barbecue and (hint, hint) more NOSTALGIA! And the route for the May 28th Half Corked Marathon might have changed a bit, but participants will be pleased to know it still includes a stop at Oliver Twist.

Inside the winery, winemakers Gina and Denice are finishing the 2014 red wines before they are bottled. Expect the usual—Merlot and Syrah—and the not so usual, in the form of small lot surprises made especially for Twist Club members. What are you waiting for? Go to the website and sign up now!Gina says a special treat is in store for customers in Alberta. She just shipped her first wines to BC’s neighbor to the east this spring.

An early bud break this spring has River Stone Estate Winery’s Ted Kane thinking that the 2016 growing season might once again be earlier than usual. But if the harvest is anything like the 2015 vintage for quality he will be a happy winemaker.Ted, who owns River Stone with his wife, Lorraine, says production in the winery is up to 2,350 cases now, thanks to excellent crops in his immaculate vineyard. With bottling fi nished in March and a new vintage on the horizon, Ted’s conversation is sprinkled with gratitude, not least because of an addition to the River Stone team last year.“Julie Planiden has been doing great things for us,” he says of the winery’s assistant general manager. “She has a great passion for our industry and her knowledge of wine is very thorough.” Experience is the great teacher in the wine business, and Julie has an impressive resume. She began her career in Winnipeg, working at one of the city’s top wine shops, where she did event planning, inventory management and created restaurant wine lists.

Since moving to British Columbia, Julie has worked at Red Rooster Winery, Poplar Grove Winery and Blue Mountain Vineyard and Cellars, gaining friends and experience along the way. “When we were looking for someone to manage our wine shop, we wanted a passionate and knowledgeable team player. Julie has exceeded our expectations,” Ted says. With more time for the vineyards and wineries, Ted is now planning a small production run of sparkling wine, and he is excited to see how the response is to the May release of Malbec, a River Stone fi rst. “I like to keep things fresh and interesting,” he says.

MEYER FAMILY PINOT NOIR RECEIVES

INTERNATIONAL RECOGNITION

If you have already picked up the latest issue of Decanter Magazine, or have perused the Calgary Herald lately, you already know that in a recent blind tasting conducted by a committee of renowned sommeliers Meyer Family Vineyard’s 2013 Mclean Creek Pinot Noir was the sole Canadian vintage to be shortlisted as one of the Top Twenty Pinot Noir’s in the world outside of the Burgundy region of France. Of course, those already familiar with the quality wines that Meyer Family is renowned for

producing won’t be too surprised to learn this. The modest boutique winery, at only 20 acres in size, has dedicated itself to growing some of the finest quality Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in the Okanagan since Jak and Janice purchased their first vineyard in 2006. And this recent recognition is certainly not the first time that the family’s efforts have been met with international accolades.More information and a link to the Decanter article can be found on the Meyer Family website. But those who are truly fond of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay should venture out beyond the rocky bluffs and rolling farmlands that line McLean Creek road in Okanagan Falls to visit this little vineyard with a big reputation. While not limited to just these two varietals alone, guests will nevertheless be pleased to explore the five different variations the winery does of the Pinot Noir and the five variations of the Chardonnay – based on both location and growing conditions.

2013 McLean Creek Pinot NoirLightly toasted with smoky notes and a dark, brick-red colour. This wine displays a prominent burst of cherry that pleasantly lingers on the palate.

HAPPY 20TH ANNIVERSARY TO STAG’S HOLLOW WINERY!

20 years and two vineyards later, Stag’s Hollow is maturing well. This season, the 20th vintage of the winery’s famous Vidal is released and available for tasting in the wine shop. Grown in the Stag’s Hollow Vineyard, Vidal benefited from 2015’s long growing season. Usually left on the vine until the first frost, the prolonged growing season meant that the first frost was later than normal. The thick skins retain the aromatics, which is why winemaker Dwight Sick waits for the first frost to gently break down the skins. “This is our ripest Vidal ever,” says Dwight.Their Shuttleworth Creek Vineyard, only a short distance from the winery, came into production in 2014. It is  planted largely with Pinot Noir but also has all kinds of new grape varieties like Tempranillo, Dolcetto, Teroldego, and Albariño. The 2015 Albariño was harvested in two batches three weeks apart and vinified very differently. The final blend of the two batches shows the Albariño beautifully in the rich 2015 vintage. What makes the new vineyard

fascinating is how physically different it is from the Stag’s Hollow Vineyard, allowing Dwight a whole new terroir palette from which to work.Something new this year for fans of the fizz, Stag’s Hollow has a new Muscat Frizzante. Made with Muscat Ottonel and Riesling, it is a fresh wine for your summer parties. Ask for it in the wine shop this season.

ok anag an fall sWILD GOOSE WINERY ANNOUNCES NEW CHEF AT SMOKE & OAK BISTRO

The folks at Wild Goose are spreading their wings this season, as the revamped and restyled Smoke & Oak Bistro has just made its debut. The all-weather, open-air seating area and fantastic new outdoor

kitchen take full advantage of the enviable views over lush, mature vines. Gorgeous, relaxing, family-friendly and affordable, the new-and-improved Bistro enhances Wild Goose’s already high-flying reputation.

Joining the flock is the creative and talented Chef Richard Desnoyers. His long and laudable career and expertise with Canadian cuisine make him a great match for Wild Goose. Under Chef Richard’s skilled direction, the menu at Smoke & Oak has been significantly expanded. Beautifully complementing the celebrated Wild Goose wines, the Bistro’s fare still highlights the best of southern barbeque, but now with the influences of South America and the American Southwest. Using local ingredients, the result is a uniquely Canadian twist on these solid flavours. Chef Richard’s kitchen, anchored by a coveted Tennessee competition smoker, promises consistently delicious fare and exciting specials. Have a sneak peek at the new menu online, but have a napkin handy, as it’s a mouth-watering read. That’s not the only thing at Wild Goose that will have you licking your lips. This season is the perfect time to take advantage of Wild Goose’s new release whites. Winemaker Hagen Kruger is excited about how these flavours have come together; the rich, fruity and crisp Double Gold-winning 2015 Pinot

Gris, and the orchard freshness of the 2015 Autumn Gold fit right into Wild Goose’s ample and impressive portfolio. Both are available at the tasting room and in stores now.Satisfy your other senses at Wild Goose, too. The highly-anticipated 2016 Vineyard Stage series has just begun! Relax overlooking the vines with a glass of Wild Goose and a plate from Chef Richard’s delectable accompanying buffet. The inaugural concert on May 1st (12-3) features Johnny Cash Tribute artist, David James and Big River. On June 18th (5-9), catch JUNO Award-nominated blues artist David Gogo. Other concerts this year include harmonica master Sherman “Tank” Doucette, and the exciting 3rd annual Beale Street Festival. Take a gander at the Wild Goose website for Tasting Room and Bistro hours, as well as Vineyard Stage concert series tickets and information. The Okanagan may be a Canadian paradise, but with so much excitement on offer, it’s clear that this Wild Goose is bringing the South up here for the summer.

PATIO TIME AT THE BENCH MARKET

PERFECT PAIRINGS ATUPPER BENCH WINERY & CREAMERY

With warm weather upon us, a favourite activity for Penticton locals and visitors alike has returned—sitting on the patio at The Bench Market and enjoying a coffee, food made fresh from local ingredients, and soaking in the sun. And, with the growing season underway, owners Heather and Stewart Glynes are pleased to reconnect with their favourite

suppliers—“8 to 10 local farmers whom we work directly with”—who arrive at the side door with fresh produce. One, who also supplies The Bench Market through the cold months, even takes back the compost to spread on his fields!“We are looking forward to fresh kale, arugula, spring peas and strawberries in May, with early cherries and apricots

later in June,” Heather smiles. “Stewart loves to incorporate fresh local produce in our daily specials and selection of salads. He is even happier now that we have renovated the kitchen!”Customers will appreciate the fresh look to The Bench Market web site, which includes menus and a gallery chock full of to-die-for menu items. Wine tourists—

in vehicles or on bicycles—love to make The Bench a stop for breakfast on the way to wineries, and to pick up artisan grocery items to enjoy with their wine purchases on the way back. The Bench Market is open 7 days a week to 5 p.m. Stop and enjoy!

Often, great things come in pairs. Wine & Cheese. Springtime & Patio. Gavin & Shana Miller. Located at the gateway to the Naramata Bench, Upper Bench Winery & Creamery offers up all of those and more. Open year round from 10-6, Upper Bench creates delights both ambrosial & refreshing. The sunny, vineyard-view patio is open 11-5. Unwind & indulge as you savour a glass of one of Gavin’s splendid new releases (perhaps the 91 point 2014 Chardonnay or the first-vintage 2013 Cab Franc?), impeccably paired to Shana’s luscious artisanal cheeses. Amplify your visit with a tutored tasting on the patio (or in the tasting room). For discerning foodies on the go, the folks in the shop are happy to box up

a picnic spread (just the right size for a bike basket. It’s worth mentioning that bike panniers fit many, many bottles…).A not-to-be-missed combo making an appearance this June, Upper Bench & One Big Table couple their immeasurable talents to create a Father’s Day pop-up brunch café. The result: inspired pairings & Chef Giulio’s tantalizing locally-sourced cuisine! Can’t make it to the beautiful Okanagan? Never fear! Upper Bench is bringing their dairy delectables to Victoria for another great match-up, the Cheese and Meat Festival (May 21st). This season, double your delight and add Upper Bench Winery & Creamery to your Okanagan & Pleasure list.

D’ANGELO ESTATE WINERY– THE WINE

REPERTOIRE GROWSThe word about Sal D’Angelo’s wines

continues to spread. D’Angelo Estate Winery’s Pinot Noir is now the house red wine at the Fairmont Lake Louise and Dolce Vita Rosso is offered on the dessert wine list. The latter is so popular that Sal will be bottling some of the 2013 vintage (“It’s just wonderful,” he says, a sentiment I can confirm after a barrel sampling last year) in larger 750ml bottles.D’Angelo red wines from the 2011 vintage are all now released, and wines from the 2012 vintage have all received their VQA approval and are resting quietly in the bottle, awaiting Sal’s own seal of approval before their release.Already proving to be popular is a first for Sal, a 100% Merlot varietal that sells for only $20. With only 200 cases made, customers should snap them up quickly. The 2011 Tempranillo, a rare BC treat, and the only one produced on Naramata Bench, includes 5 % Cab/Merlot and is priced at $25.Sal says he is pleased with the results of his first ever white dessert wine, the 2015 Late Harvest Viognier, which was harvested at 29 brix on November 15th.

With only 9 % alcohol, this German-style wine will be released in May or June. The veteran winemaker describes the 2015 vintage as “beautiful”, adding that he is especially pleased that the grapes on his vineyard maintained their acid levels surprisingly well despite the long hot growing season. As for 2016? “Bring it on!” he grins.

A unique winemaking project is underway in the Okanagan, as Mireille Sauvé, a member of the BC chapter of Les Dames d’Escoffier, oversees the creation of the “dames wine”.Dame Mireille has been visiting the Okanagan from her home base in Vancouver to shepherd this fundraising project, supporting scholarships for BC women pursuing their education in wine and food. Les Dames d’Escoffier is an international organization and the only Canadian chapter is in British Columbia. The red and white dame wines which will be bottled this spring, and a limited number will be available. All of the profits will go back to Les Dames d’Escoffier. The wines are unique, and Mireille, who became Canada’s youngest sommelier with funds from a Les Dames scholarship, says they are already showing great flavours and sophistication. The white is a light straw colour with aromas of apricot, apple, pineapple and a hint of lime zest and mineral undertones. On the palate– light-bodied with lively acidity, racy lemon and lime. Pear, apricot and lychee fruit flavours finish with a cleansing dryness that prepares a mouth-watering palate for its next juicy sip. As for the red? This will be a “fireplace” wine, enjoyed on its own or with friends with charcuterie, cheeses, burgers or stews. It has a deep crimson colour and a rich, vanilla-infused mulled berry aroma with bright red cherry juice and notes of star anise. Medium bodied, velvety tannins, and an abundance of dark fruit flavours, as it finishes with a spicy, toasted finish. Guaranteed to be your next winter wine.Visit dameswine.com for details on how you can buy these bottles.

LOCK & WORTH AT POPLAR GROVE CHEESE

FOREST GREEN MAN LAVENDER FARM–THE SYMBOL OF BEAUTY

LIVE LIKE A NARAMATIAN– SANDY BEACH LODGE

The team of Matthew SherLOCK and Ross HackWORTH are Lock & Worth Winery in Naramata. The two also work together at Ross’ other winery Nichol Vineyards but for this venture, the goal is to make ‘honest, single vineyard wines of time and place - priced for everyday consumption’. Sourcing some of their grapes from Gitta’s vineyard, their repertoire includes: a Sauvignon Blanc/Semillon blend, Semillon, Cabernet Franc Rosé, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Gitta Pedersen is also a farmer and proudly tends the vines in her vineyard coaxing them into perfectionThe wines are all single vineyard production and winemaking style is natural, ‘hands-off’-- whole cluster pressed, unfined and

unfiltered and using natural ferments with no added yeasts. As Matthew says regarding the possibility of sediment in the bottle –“it’s OK!” The quality of winemaking matches that of their partner, Gitta Pedersen and her cheese-making ethic. World-class cheeses created by this innovative artisan and her team, ‘the cheese gals’, are paired perfectly with Lock & Worth wines available in the cheese & wine shop at Poplar Grove Cheese. Gitta says, “We are looking forward to reopening the shop for the Okanagan Spring Wine Festival, when we will release our first of the year, long awaited batch of “Harvest Moon” Cheese for the Festival. Our visitors will

be able to enjoy a picnic overlooking Okanagan Lake savouring Lock & Worth wines with PG Cheeses and delicious sourdough bread from Barefoot Breads.”Also, we are offering cheese making classes on site, please contact the Louise Pearson, PG Cheesery for details and dates. ([email protected])

X-Files fans have long been convinced, like Mulder and Scully, that “The truth is out there.” But a visit to the lavender farm owned by Doug Mathias and Karolina Born-Tschüemperlin might just convince that that the truth can be found in the Forest Green Man, the Celtic spirit of nature. The Green Man, usually represented as a stylized face made of leaves and branches, is the Celtic spirit of nature symbolizing growth, fertility and

renewal. He is an appropriate symbol for this beautiful property, which features an orchard, outbuildings, gorgeous guesthouse, a spectacular lavender garden and two of Naramata’s loveliest and most creative people. Musicians and artists, Karolina and Doug translate their passion for the land into a unique and wonderful variety of natural products. Herb mixes, flavoured salts, peppers and sugars, teas, soaps, essential oils, lotions and lip balms, sachets—the selection is as stunning as it is aromatic. In the farm’s shop, the lavender products abound, spread among other items that Karolina sources, like linens from Provence and pashminas from Kashmir. Her own art pieces, along with those of other artists, provide a burst of colour at every turn. Visit Forest Green Man Lavender Farm and it’s easy to see why it has become a popular site for small weddings. The truth really is out here—and it smells as good as it looks!

SERENDIPITY WINERY–PLEASANT SURPRISES AHEAD

EVERYONE NEEDS THERAPY

May is an exciting time at Serendipity Winery as owner Judy Kingston looks forward to another year of growth and change. Truth be told, she also awaits the return of ‘second in command’, Katie O’Kell, her daughter. Katie, with her winemaking degree now complete, is getting valuable experience at a New Zealand winery and will return home later in the month.Meanwhile, construction is getting underway. A small building beside the winery will house washrooms for visitors. The winery building itself is being renovated to create a new wine shop featuring large windows to highlight the vineyard views on the beautiful Naramata Bench. The entrance to the property is being redone—“to make it more visible and elegant”, Judy says, and the parking lot will also get some attention. With 2015 white wines now available, visitors will get a firsthand appreciation for the way Judy’s vision translates through her vineyard and into the bottle. She works closely with Katie and winemaker Bradley Cooper to ensure Serendipity wines are of high quality and

food friendly. A note to the wise—small wine batches in particular tend to sell out quickly, so joining the Wine Club on line is the best way to avoid disappointment.Serendipity has been winning awards since its first wines were released, and the accolades continue to roll in. 2011 Merlot and 2014 vintages of Rosé and Sauvignon Blanc all won medals at the 2016 Savor NW Wine Awards and the Globe & Mail’s Beppi Crosariol gave the 2012 Pinot Noir 90 points earlier this year. Drop in between 9 and 6 daily to see what all the fuss is about!

~ Lorne Eckersley

New season, new accolades, new releases! Therapy Vineyards may be well established, but they know all about keeping things fresh.Therapy recently returned home from the Alberta Winefests loaded down with medals. Thank goodness their bottles have strong necks! The Therapists have much to be proud of, having won 1st Place in the People’s Choice Awards (three times over, so “triple-first place”, is that a thing? It should be), with their 2014 Fizzio Therapy Blanc and 2014 Freudian Sip white blend. These two champions also each garnered Silver at the 2015 BC Wine Awards. And the prize ribbons keep coming! Among their many other recent honours, Therapy took home the Gold for the 2013 Fizzio

Therapy at the Great Northwest Wine Competition, Silver for the 2014 Pink Freud at the Intervin Wine Awards, and the People’s Choice Award for the NV Freudified at the 14th Annual East Kootenay Wine Festival, all this past Fall. With such commendations, they’re beaming with pride, but there’s no resting on laurels for this crew. Therapy, of course, is an ongoing process, so winemaker Steven Latchford has been hard at work on the new releases. Five new 2015 wines have come to market: the latest vintage of that award-wining Freudian Sip is now available, and as delicious as ever. The popular Pink Freud Rosé is a perfect match for this gorgeous spring weather. The small-lot, single-vineyard white varietals are ready, too: Sauvignon Blanc, Gewürztraminer and Pinot Gris, each one brilliantly showcasing its particular Naramata Bench vineyard terroir.Their ever-filling trophy case and triumphant lineup of the latest releases confirm that Therapy Vineyards offers up much to cheer about this spring.

MORAINE ESTATE WINERYMoraine Estate Winery at only

four years old has garnered enough international and local awards and accolades that would make any winery proud for a lifetime. But they are just getting started. Winemaker Jacq Kemp has excelled and continues to excel in creating award winners, and this will only increase as her knowledge and comfort level working with the vines grown on the estate has become intimate. In early April at the 2016 Finger Lakes International Wine Competition, Moraine won big again beating out many different varietals from around the world-- 3,824 to be precise! Winners: Riesling 2015 – Gold, Cliffhanger Red 2014 – Silver, and Gewürztraminer 2015 – Bronze. The high quality of wines being produced at Moraine are a combination of the unique terroir achieved in their glorious sloping vineyards facing Okanagan Lake on the Naramata Bench. The soil conditions work in concert with the

sunshine hours and reflection off the lake, and Jacq’s gentle yet firm touch, especially needed to craft the persnickety Pinot Noir grape, is indeed a gift. Proprietors Oleg and Svetlana Aristarkhov moved to wine country from Alberta. The winery is a family business with the Naramata estate vineyards, named for their two daughters Anastasia and Sophia, producing a range of varietals, two very popular and affordable blends (Cliffhanger White and Cliffhanger Red) as well as an icewine.

2015 RieslingWhole bunch pressed and fermented at cool temperatures, this multi awardwinning Riesling is exclusively available on-line, at tasting room and for wine club members.  Find hints of dried apricots and orchids. The natural acidity of this wine is balanced well by the natural residual sugars.

With a nod to J.R. Tolkien’s The Old Walking Song aka The Road Goes Ever On by hobbit Bilbo Baggins, each time I travel the 15-km route along Naramata Road, I marvel at the epic adventure that unfolds. Here you’ll find the Naramata Bench Wineries Association and its 27 member wineries including Bella Wines, Bench 1775 Winery, Black Widow Winery, D’Angelo Estate Winery, Daydreamer Wines, Deep Roots Winery, Elephant Island Orchard Wines, Hillside Estate Winery & Bistro, Howling Bluff Estate Winery, Kettle Valley Winery, La Frenz Winery, Lake Breeze Vineyards, Lang Vineyards, Misconduct Wine Co., Monster Vineyards, Moraine Estate Winery, Nichol Vineyard, Perseus Winery, Poplar Grove Winery, Quidni Estate Winery, Red Rooster Winery, Serendipity Winery, Terravista Vineyards, Therapy Vineyards, Tightrope Winery, Upper Bench Winery & Creamery, and Van Westen Vineyards. The drive in itself is epic as you wind along the captivating country road through orchards and

vineyards, set between Okanagan Lake and craggy hillside, from the City of Penticton to the Village of Naramata. Yet, the real adventure begins as you are welcomed into the wineries that keep evolving as eclectic treasures. Each trip you’ll discover more deliciousness whether it’s in new vintages at known favourites or at new wineries, in the epicurean options, or at winery events. Debuting this season is Sig’s Grille at Therapy, for fresh grilled comfort food; an outdoor lounge at Quidni; and a Bistro at Bench 1775. Mark your calendar for the 13th Annual Naramata Tailgate Party, Saturday, September 10th, to be hosted at Red Rooster Winery. It sells out earlier each year so watch for ticket sales in early June and buy yours soon. THE WILD WEST MEETS WINE COUNTRY AT LEGEND DISTILLERY

DO YOU HEAR THAT HUM? IT’S COMING FROM THE HILL. THERE’S SO MUCH

HAPPENING AT HILLSIDE THIS SEASON!

Inspired by the folk and folklore of the Okanagan, The Legend Distillery brings a sense of the Wild West to wine country. Handcrafted spirits imbued with local herbs and long tales provide the foundation for unique cocktails and conversation. Imagine an intoxicating Doctor’s Gin created from locally foraged juniper berries, coriander and citrus combined and infused with an exceptional blend Okanagan botanicals of lavender and elderberry. Or how about a Shadow on the Lake vodka, inspired by legends of the lake monster, hand-crafted from BC’s best wheat with smooth notes of vanilla and caramel.

All grinding, mashing, fermenting, distilling, drinking, dining, and dancing take place on-site at the distillery in an intimate atmosphere with an abundance of ambience.Legend has it that BC beat prohibition with a little wit and wisdom; the local physician prescribed a jolly pick-me-up for local lads a little under the weather. Now Legend Distillery carries on the tradition of looking after locals and adventurous visitors alike with a menu of artisanal liquor creatively blended into a new line of cocktails. Now all savvy travelers know that one cannot navigate the wine trails on a liquid lunch, no matter how fine or sublime the liquor, and so with this in mind, the good folk at Legend, Doug and Dawn Lennie, offer a menu of fine food in the Smugglers Smokehouse. The Smugglers Smokehouse provides an expanded menu, offering daily specials seven days a week, and is open for lunch, dinner and brunch from 11–12 on weekends.

~ Henrietta Poirier

The valley has been buzzing about acclaimed winemaker Kathy Malone’s limited-production, highly sought-after Muscat Ottonel. Floral, elegant, and a Hillside original, an early release to Wine Club members in March means that time is running out to procure your share of this delicacy. Another perk for those lucky Wine Club folks happens on May 5th at the new release Pickup Party. Club members can enjoy canapes, new release wines and music (and surely a selfie with the iconic Hillside pickup truck!).Even if you’re not yet a member (what are you waiting for?), you still have every reason to revel in the bustle and bounty at Hillside this spring. On May 7th, enjoy the Spring Wine Fest’s Roll Out the Barrels barrel tastings. Hillside’s unique offering this

year: sip their 2015 Gamay Noir as you linger among the magnificent old vines that produced it. You’ll find seductive red fruit and a long finish, but you might need to also sample the 2012 in the wineshop, you know, for comparison. The winery gleams at the Pinot and Pearls celebrations during Spring Wine Fest. The next of these afternoon patio events (3- 5, May 7th) pairs the winery’s delectable Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris with fresh-shucked BC oysters and live music from Uncorked! On May 8th, Chef Brent Pillon serves an extraordinary Mother’s Day brunch at the Bistro (10-1) –make reservations, as all of these events sell out quickly. This spring, follow that enticing rumble to Hillside Winery and see for yourself what the commotion is all about.

DIRTY LAUNDRY ADDS SECOND GUEST HOUSE

While the vines in the Okanagan are just showing promise of the wines to come, wineries are busy readying the past few years’ vintages for release as the many wines have only now had enough time in bottle to reach

the maturity required before they are deemed ready. At Dirty Laundry Winery the 2013 Double Gold medal award Winning Pinot Noir has been sold out for a while, but the winery has only now declared the 2014 Pinot Noir ready after 17 months in barrel; all French Oak, of which 30% was new. Barrel samples have been rave worthy, as the 2014 season was exceptionally good for Pinot Noir.   Dirty Laundry Winery’s patio currently seats 100, but they’ve found they need a little more room to accommodate visitors, especially during the busy summer weekends with live entertainment attracting crowds each day from  1-4 pm. The Friday Lobster Lunches starting July 1, are also a huge draw, so be sure to reserve, they are held from 12-2 pm for just $34.95. Build your own picnics are available daily. The tasting bar will also accommodate more wine samplers at one time and will now have a permanent roof for those days when it’s a little too bright or on the off chance there’s rain.If you’ve been to the winery you may have witnessed the passing of the Kettle Valley

Steam Train, and the interest of perhaps taking a ride has been mentioned by guests, so there is now a  program whereby any purchase made in the wine shop will entitle guests to a discount card for a ride on the train. Stop in for the complimentary winery tours from June 13th, which take approximately 30 minutes on any Monday through Friday at 11:30 and 2:30 pm daily, and follow that with a train ride. Stay a while at the winery as this season Dirty Laundry is adding a second rental  property  in the vineyard.  The house will be known as the “Parlour House” and they are planning for July 1st opening. Guests will enjoy stunning views of the lake, vineyards and trestles and have access to the outdoor pool and beautiful grounds.  Check out their website for more details.

2014 Pinot NoirDark cherry and plum aromas give way to a rich, smooth mouth feel; the wine is a perfect companion to roast duck or a summer salmon barbeque.

MOONLIGHT AND LOVE AT LUNESSENCE

Michal Mosny and his wife Martina are the stewards, vintners and winemakers at Lunessence, an elegant boutique winery and vineyard nestled between two wetlands and resting under the gaze of Giants Head. Visitors to the winery can relax on the patio, listen to classical music, and enjoy views of the lake and the wildlife of the wetlands. Michal and Martina passionately believe in working harmoniously with the natural balance of the vineyard. As Michal states, “we are establishing biodynamic principles, to understand the land, the vines and what is needed for the optimal health of the land and taste of the wine.”Biodynamics is not for the fainthearted farmer. It goes beyond organic and demands vast amounts of time and dedication. Biodynamic vintners spend more time in the vineyard, paying close attention to the vines, nourishing the soil, and working with the lunar cycle. This is not new, in the Farmers Almanacs

of bygone days, planting and harvesting were planned by the lunar calendar. Biodynamics is often disregarded by big agriculture where profi t dictates how much time and effort is put into the product. The wine industry however, takes biodynamic wines seriously, and the recognition is based purely on the quality of wine produced from biodynamic wineries. Michal brings a European sensibility to winemaking, with an understanding that a light hand and an intuitive approach lets the qualities of the grape shine through the wine. For Michal, winemaking is all about taking elements from nature and transforming them into a new product, so when the wine is opened the essence of the vineyards are expressed through the taste. The terroir, the grape, the seasons and surrounding energies are the symphony of ingredients, and he is the conductor who manages each element with grace.

The fi nal product is an alchemical fusion where all parts unite in harmony. Michal’s father and grandfather introduced him to the background of winemaking and the wine regions of France. Michal brought the knowledge of his forefathers to Slovakia where he fi rst started making wine, and now, after searching for a new terroir, he and Martina bring their experience of making fi ne wine to the unique microclimate of B.C. wine country. He understands that every region, every vineyard is different and as such, has different needs. It’s not a set formula for all vineyards, varietals, or harvest; experience, understanding, intuition and artistry are employed every step of the way to bring the best qualities to the fi nal product. With a background in classical music, Michal knows that music moves the hearts and minds of people, and with an understanding that sound vibrations also affect plants, his vines happily grow to classical music piped throughout the vineyards. And in the winery, the wines are not just bottled they are serenaded by Mozart, Mascagni, and many others, the energy of the music tuning the subtle notes of the wine.A visit to Lunessence is more than a wine tasting, it is an experience, an exploration that takes the mind along new paths of how life can be, if only we relax and listen to nature’s harmony. And of course, visitors also experience a wonderful selection of symphonically sublime wines. Sign up for the newsletter at lunessencewinery.com to stay informed of upcoming, full moon classical music events throughout the summer.

SAGE HILLS WINERY– BEYOND ORGANIC,SERENITY & SOPHISTICATION

THIS SEASON AT DELONG STUDIO: FRESH LOOK,NEW PIECES

Built into the hillside, just on the outskirts of Summerland, you will follow a road that will lead you to a gasp inducing view and Sage Hills Winery. Named for the desert-like sagebrush bushes surrounding the estate, the colour palate for the winery matches the sublime calming colours that nature has brush stroked here. There is a peaceful, Zen-like feel here, like being on the edge of the earth, that will lead you into the gorgeous tasting room that beckons you to stay, to actually sit and stay. Besides the panoramic lakeview provided by the expanse of windows surrounding the room, you will note something truly unique—stools. This is a gesture made by owner Rick Thrussell, and it was his vision in creating this space, an offer to come, relax and enjoy the experience and wines they have created for you.Rick built his home below and the winery. Toby Lodge added the stunning décor

touches, like the chandelier hanging above the lush, cushioned corner window seat.” And enjoying the experience includes of course, tasting their repertoire of rich, sophisticated wines crafted by award-winning winemaker Tom Di Bello. Pinot Noir is the star of this wine list, followed by Gewürztraminer and Pinot Gris in all of its many glorious manifestations. Rick said, “with our Upper Bench, and Howling Rooster vineyard full of excellent Pinot Gris vines”, instead of expanding varietals they thought, “What can we create with the Pinot Gris?” And from that vision came a brand new Brut Sauvage Sparkling wine (being released this spring) and the wine world’s newest love: an orange wine, theirs has been christened “Rhymes with Orange”. They have also crafted a superb single varietal fortifi ed wine called “AFT” made from Syrah. The tasting room opens May 19th. Go, enjoy, and wait for future news of a glorious expansion.

JOIN IN THE CELEBRATIONS THIS SUMMER AT THORNHAVEN ESTATES

It’s a cause for celebration in Summerland, as Thornhaven Estates Winery marks its 15th year anniversary this summer. The picturesque adobe styled winery was born as a retirement project by Jan and Jack Fraser, but has since become one of this modest town’s most well-known and beloved wineries, and also holds the distinction of being Summerland’s oldest family-run winery as well. This is evident in every aspect of the vineyard, with the whole family deeply involved in the day-to-day operations of the winery at every level. In addition to Jan and Jack, who also run the Jackson Height’s vineyard, son Jason is winemaker and cellarmaster for the estate and oversees three of Thornhaven’s Summerland vineyards. Meanwhile daughter Cortney heads sales and marketing for the winery with husband Nick while also overseeing the Elmo’s Vineyard, where the winery grows its coveted Orange Muscat. It’s a tight-knit operation that has allowed Thornhaven to maintain its unpretentious charm that so perfectly fits in to the atmosphere of Summerland itself. The anniversary celebrations kick off on the May 21st – 22nd weekend with Jeremy Head followed by the popular return of the annual Music on the Mountain concert. Campfire Junkies take the stage for the Bottleneck Drive’s

Heard it through the Grapevine festivities and come Canada Day Thornhaven marks the start of the summer season and the birth of the nation with music by Pam Ferens. All of this occurs on the beautiful southwest-style patio built into the slopes of Summerland’s iconic Little Giant’s Head Mountain which looks down over a rolling vista of vineyards, Lake Okanagan and the Trout Creek Canyon. Of course, no anniversary is complete without wine. Bubbly is the wine of choice for anniversaries and Thornhaven’s 2015 Infusion, a popular sparkling wine made from the classic Champagne varietals Pinot Meunier, Pinot Noir, and Chardonnay, will be released just in time for the start of the festivities. However, those who come by the wineshop will also have the opportunity to try the newly released XV red blend. Made especially for the 15th anniversary the XV is only available at Thornhaven Estates, but did you really need any more reason to come down the Bottleneck Drive and join the party?

XVSpecially crafted and released for the 15th anniversary of Thornhaven Estates, this 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon – Syrah blend is smooth to the pallet and finishes with hints of both black cherry and plum.

They say good news travels far, this might explain why Kalala wines can be found all over the world in the homes of traveling oenophiles who discovered Kalala and shipped a case or two back home. Today, this once little-known winery has helped raise the profile of BC’s wine industry by winning Gold at the Chardonnay du Monde, France with their 2013 Chardonnay ice wine. When asked what helped this Chardonnay take Gold, winemaker Tibor Erdelyi humbly attributes the success to the grape grown under the loving and knowledgeable care of owner and viticulturist Karnail, who follows organic principles to produce quality wines without the interference of pesticides and herbicides. Of course, the grape and the terroir are the foundation ingredients, essential, but not the end of the story. The Chardonnay is an affable grape that offers a variety of flavors and numerous paths for the winemaker.

This is where winemakers prove their expertise and intuition in bringing the grape to wine fruition. Under Tibor’s watch, the fermenting and maturation process is carefully monitored, the best qualities of the grape are cajoled into releasing flavor, great attention to detail, precise timing and that unknown quality that could be defined as energy, inspiration, or intention are combined with the grape, terroir, and weather to make a delicious new product. This is alchemy, and in all alchemical processes there is an unknown quality, a creative touch, perhaps it is simply dedication that separates the good from the great. Producing Chardonnay is every burgeoning wine region’s rite of passage, and now Kalala has proven to the world that BC does indeed belong to the international club of wine professionals.

For the last six years Volcanic Hills has established itself as one of the most renowned wineries of West Kelowna, producing varietals with unique notes that reflect the distinct growing region and blends that reflect the winery’s independent spirit. Founded in 2010 on the slopes of Mount Boucherie, an extinct volcano and iconic landmark, Volcanic Hills has staked its reputation on its commitment to locality. With the bulk of the wineries crop coming from both estate vineyards and those from the Smith Creek area, the wines of

Volcanic Hills are distinguishable from the rest of the Okanagan’s for their soft mineral notes, a reflection of the region’s volcanic past. Volcanic Hills looks forward to shall we say, erupt into the summer wine season, with the release of its ever popular Lava blend. A semi-sweet red composed of Zweigelt, Pinot Noir, Foch, and Merlot that can be served chilled and enjoyed on even the hottest of Okanagan summer days. To really ring in the summer season be sure to swing by the wineshop and pick up your tickets for the third-annual Kelowna Folk Club – Volcanic Hills concert, which will be held at the winery on May 28th.While there, enjoy the spacious patio which overlooks the estate vineyards and down onto Okanagan Lake. All of this of course, basks in the shadow of the monolithic Mount Boucherie, whose presence is still felt here in more ways than one.

2014 Lava Lightly oaked in French barrels with velvet-like tannins, this red blend greets you with an enticing aroma of black cherries and meets the pallet with a burst of blackberry, finishing with just a hint of spice.

Already distinguished for its broad range of experiences in wine touring, the Westside Wine Trail’s diversity deepens as more wineries join the fold. You’ll fi nd some of the oldest and most established vineyards and wineries in the Okanagan Valley such as Mission Hill Estate Winery and Quails’ Gate Estate Winery. Plus there are new arrivals such as The Hatch, Ciao Bella Winery and Off the Grid Organic Winery with Grizzli Winery and Indigenous World Winery opening this May. There are quaint wineries and architectural masterpieces perched on rolling hills of vineyards, some with sweeping lake views while

others have idyllic rural settings – all within a short drive from each other and Kelowna. Various wineries encourage you to pack a lunch and purchase a glass of wine onsite to enjoy in their picturesque picnic areas while others present fabulous restaurants for which you’ll want to reserve. The diversity goes beyond the age, size and amenities to the wine varietals offered and the nuances within those vintages based on where the grapes are grown. Many of the wineries also own vineyards, or have cultivated relationships with farmers, in the south Okanagan, Naramata, on both sides of Okanagan Lake and in the Similkameen region. Touring the Westside Wine Trail gives people without multiple days to travel, an advantage to get a sense of the scope of what the Valley has to offer. It helps grow the industry, too, because once visitors have a taste, they’ll want to return for more and to extend their trip to explore other regions. Celebrating the release of our NEW Traditional Method Blanc de Noir!

Kelowna- based Tantalus Vineyards may be a relatively small operation, but when it comes to brand recognition for excellence, this winery is colossal.Tantalus Vineyards has created award-winning wines from inception. Wines are crafted carefully by winemaker David Paterson who seems to have the Midas touch when it comes to winemaking genres. First achieving benchmark status through his Rieslings, he moved on to Pinot Noir where soon after the awards and accolades began rolling in. David explains, “I think that like our Riesling the reason our Pinot Noir stands out is because of our vineyard site and our unwavering commitment to always express vintage and site above all else. I am very hands-off with Pinot Noir, which often means

having the guts to wait out its quirks and not be to reactionary to its highs and lows through the elevage process.”Decanter Magazine agrees, nominating Tantalus Pinot Noir in their recent ‘World’s Best Pinot Noir’ feature story.2 ½ years ago David began his love affair with Blanc de Noir, and it is now ready for release! The sparkling wine program at Tantalus Vineyards has already achieved cult status with their Old Vines Riesling Natural Brut, and so the bar moves again….

2013 Tantalus Blanc de Noir $27.74A magnificent pale rose petal pink in colour, the wine pours with a wonderfully persistent bead and mouth-filling mousse. Aromas of sun-baked

red apple, fresh oysters, orchard blossom and cherry almond biscotti lift out of the glass. The palate has a voluptuous  mouthfeel with raspberry, refreshing gooseberry and lush mandarin topped off with a pink grapefruit flesh finish that carries on and on.

RauDZ Regional Table holds true to its philosophy from day one to “support local, buy local, eat and drink local.,” setting it apart from many restaurants that only include a few local wines along with international selections on their “By the Glass” and “By the Bottle” lists. Co-owner Audrey Surrao, who holds the level 3 WSET, an internationally recognized wine and spirits certification authority, personally curates the 100% local wine list. Audrey says, “I’m proud to present the best examples from appellations across the Okanagan Valley. By changing the wine list multiple times annually, at RauDZ we’re able to showcase a large sample of the over 200 wineries from the entire length of the valley.” Such procurement means you can go wine touring during the day sampling and later enjoy a dinner featuring the best local ingredients

along with more local wine. In addition to the wine list changing seasonally, you can also look forward to the cocktail list that showcases the best of the season in featured cocktails and signature fruit martinis. Plus, there’s six continuously rotating beer taps highlighting local breweries. Of course, you can count on the food menus to change seasonally and where else can you find such a talented team working in the kitchen? Included in the culinary line up are a Top Chef Canada and Chopped Canada contestant and a Chopped Canada winner. So sit back and enjoy the spiffy refreshed setting, just recently renovated, where the talented and professional service team can help pair your wine with your dinner or you can simply enjoy your own local favourite.

The fi rst thing a sharp-eyed visitor might notice on a visit to Summerhill Pyramid Winery’s estate vineyard is a great variety of colours among the vine leaves.“We don’t go for that Miracle Gro look here,” winemaker and general manager Eric von Krosigk says. The vineyards, managed with organic, biodynamic and permacultural practices, don’t get the continual cocktail of sprays throughout the season that other properties might. “I think we get an expression of terroir that is much more intense—the vine enters into a symbiotic relationship with the soil,” he says.In that soil are something in the order of 57,000 species of microfl ora that create a complex growing medium for the vines and, ultimately, the grapes they produce.“It’s like an ocean—an incredibly complex ecosystem that plants grow in. The  conventional  practice of constantly using salts, sulphurs and other components ultimately makes the soil toxic.”Not that less invasive farming practices are any less costly or labour intensive. Compost mixed right on the property can need adjustments, and biodynamics—which follow the teachings of Rudolph Steiner—require the making and use of  fi ve  natural preparations made from fermented manure, minerals and herbs that, during the course of the growing season, add to the soil’s structure and health. “It really takes an artist’s eye to read the plant and keep adjusting what we do through the season.”

Biodynamic practices are intended to create diversity and balance in a farm ecosystem, generating health and fertility. Throughout the growing season, Eric says, “Everything matters—water, weather, nutrients, even the pH levels in the water. We are trying to achieve a certain harmony so the vine doesn’t overproduce, but also so it doesn’t underproduce.”It is this gentle, persistent level of care that helps develop minerality and other characteristics in the fruit that are treasured in wine. “80% of what’s in the bottle comes right from the grape.”Come harvest time, weather and temperature, and the condition of both plants and grapes are factors in determining when to pick. So too is what the grapes are intended for. Barely ripe, acidic fruit makes the best sparkling wine, which might only have a 10% alcohol level. For a table Chardonnay, slightly higher levels are sought, and those come from further ripening and sugar development.

On the day of harvest, whole Chardonnay clusters are given a gentle pressing and allowed to cold settle for about 12 hours. The murky juice is then quickly transferred to oak, often new, barrels. Fermentation might take two weeks, after which the juice is racked, or siphoned off the sediment, and then stirred regularly for up to 2½ months, encouraging body and structure development.  Malolactic fermentation takes place as well as the yeasts breaking down, the remaining proteins create a rich mid palate, which gives Chardonnay its treasured creaminess. When fermentation has created the desired results, a portion of the wine is again racked and stored in stainless steel vats to allow for a fi nal settling of the remaining lees. Tweaks in that period result in a clear, stable wine that is ready for bottling. A few months of rest in the bottle and it is ready for the shelf, and appreciative customers.“I love Chardonnay,” Eric smiles. “I’m not a fan of oversweet or over-oaked

versions but when grown and made right, it’s a great wine.”Throughout its time in the winery, the liquid’s exposure to oxygen is controlled by the introduction of nitrogen to the barrels and tanks. While wine needs oxygen along the way, too much can lead to unwelcome results. The tiny clusters of grapes that begin with fruit the size of a pinhead evolve into fruit bursting with complex fl avours, just what the winemaker is looking for as he gently guides it through the complex process of turning fruit into wine. Chardonnay grapes grown on the Summerhill Pyramid Winery produce wine that has won awards—“too many to remember”, Eric says—for both sparkling and table wine versions.

Linger over a glass of one our award winning wines and enjoy the view from our picnic area. Ask us about our Wine Club and about booking an event in our new reception area.”

Open daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner with brunch on weekends, the surf is always up at the West Coast Grill + Oyster Bar as the Okanagan’s premier seafood house. The extensive selection of fresh and sustainable coastal seafood including oysters, mussels, crabs, prawns and sushi will have you humming Beach Boys tunes and looking for west coast cuties. The Happy Hour, daily from 3 to 6 pm, with discounted wines by-the-glass, beer and cocktails, and ‘buck-a-shuck’ BC oysters and other appetizer items is sure to keep the “good vibrations” going. “Have fun, fun, fun” in the sun as oversized windows bring in the Okanagan sunshine to amplify the seaside colour accent wall and “fish scale” tile behind the long, marble-topped bar. This beautifully designed contemporary restaurant exudes the tone for a seafood-centric menu. If you

prefer something other than seafood, “everything will turn out alright” because you can select from a variety of salads, flatbreads, hamburgers and steaks. The Farm to Plate part of the menu features New York Strip Sirloin, Braised Lamb Shank and Slow Roasted Short Ribs. An extensive list of Okanagan wines, cocktails and beers complement the menu. Owned and operated by Valerie Lessard in partnership with Prestige Hotels + Resorts, Kelowna’s West Coast Grill + Oyster Bar is the fifth to open. You’ll find it at the downtown Prestige Inn at 1675 Abbott Street with its seasonal patio overlooking Kelowna’s signature City Park. If you’re looking for a place to park that “Little Deuce Coupe” or other vehicle, there’s convenient parking onsite. For more details, see westcoastgrill.ca/kelowna

On a sun-dappled Okanagan spring morning, I dropped by SpierHead Winery in Southeast Kelowna to sample some new releases with Proprietor Marina Knutson. It was one of those days when the sun and the blue sky bore the promise of warm weather and lush vines soon to come. SpierHead’s picnic and special event areas are ready to welcome guests for anything from a couples’ getaway to a corporate function. Inside the winery, stacks of boxes are hidden away, bearing over a 1700 cases of SpierHead’s 2015 vintage releases. “2015 was hot and great for wine,” says Marina. “Generally, we harvested three to four weeks earlier than normal and were nearly done by Thanksgiving.”

2015 Pinot GrisThe crisp new Pinot featured a citrusy aroma, hints of melon and papaya and a long, soft and warm finish.

2015 Riesling The Riesling offers crisp acidity and is well-balanced, with the aroma of Granny Smith apples and lime. A dry wine, it was also refreshingly light. This versatile white can be enjoyed now, or laid down for a few months.

2015 Chardonnay Marina says this bottling is more Burgundian in style than previous releases; it is soft, with a beautiful aroma– a smooth sipper.

And SpierHead has exciting future plans. A new half-acre vineyard will feature additional Riesling grapes, and a new two acre western slope block will be home to two new clones of Pinot Noir.

Your spring fling or summer soiree is the perfect time to bring out the Bling! The View Winery, one of Southeast Kelowna’s most sparkling gems, is ready for the warm weather with the release of their 2016 white, pink and first-ever red Bling sparkling wine in a can. White and pink Bling are already available, the red will follow in early summer. This is not your typical sparkling wine. Each can contains grapes ripened in the unique micro-climate found at The View. Sun-drenched vines receive a brief reprieve when the evening breeze from Okanagan Lake cools down the vineyards. The result is a crisp, slightly dry and fresh beverage that comes in a can. Those same conditions help create the magic in The View’s trifecta of popular rosé wines. The Voulez View Rosé has been described as “a carnival of aromas and flavours.” Crisp and fresh, one wine enthusiast suggested it would be ideal

with mid-day cucumber sandwiches with crusts removed. During a recent barrel tasting of The View’s delightful Silver Lining Rosé, it was obvious that this wine is a crowd-pleaser. A luscious Baco Noir Rosé, it is rounded out with a blend of aromatic whites. Finally, on the ‘must try’ list is the Distraction Frizzante, a delightful, dry sparkling wine comprised of Pinotage, Gewürztraminer and Ehrenfelser grapes grown on site. This year, The View is poised to make your summer sparklingly delicious!

As one leaves the downtown core of Kelowna, restaurant choices dwindle. Recently, much to the appreciation of the Southeast Kelowna neighbourhoods, Mission Creek Golf Course did a major renovation to the restaurant side and reopened Duffers with a bright new layout. Offering a welcome respite to those wanting to stay outside of the downtown area, and a treat for locals and golfers who can now relax in the neighbourhood after a game of 9 or 18 holes. Duffers has a great menu to choose from for all three meals of the day- and of course, delicious snacks as well. The brunches have been a huge hit with entrees ranging from beautiful Eggs Benedict to breakfast wraps for those on the go. For lunch or dinner, dive into a plate of Fish & chips or the Steak Sandwich, the traditional pub food menu aims to please the hungry golf crowd

and their local, casual clientele. There is also a kid’s menu to choose from.Patio season is upon us and guests will be able to linger under the Okanagan sun, sipping cocktails and enjoying a meal overlooking the green golf course. Check out their great BC wine list to enjoy too or cold beer on tap. Chef Damian will also be offering dinner specials and changes to the menu featuring what is in season.

The Kelowna writing community lost one of its’ most prolific and inspirational writers in March, when Dona Sturmanis passed away after a long illness. At one time or another, Dona wrote for, edited or published many of the successful publications that exist in the Okanagan today and was one of Food & Wine Trails Magazine’s favorite writers. She will be remembered for the pure joy she expressed when instructing writers during well over twenty years of teaching. From private home classes to Okanagan College students, Dona’s passion for writing touched everyone she taught and many of her students have gone on to become successful writers themselves. Dona led the charge in spreading the news about happiness in the last year of her life, and she was busy writing a book on that subject prior to her death. She became well known for her research and writing on the subject of happiness, and she lived exactly the way she wrote. Her greatest joy came from her son, Leif Nordholm, and her two granddaughters.

Of all of Dona’s gifts – and there were many – perhaps most important is her gift of friendship. From past students to colleagues to members of the arts community or old friends from the past, Dona knew how to be a good friend. Her naturally inquisitive nature and genuine interest, along with her well-developed sense of humor, made her friends feel blessed to have her in their lives. And blessed they were.

As spring settles in to Gray Monk Estate Winery, it is awash with colour. From emerald green hillsides to the sparkling waters of Okanagan Lake to the bursts of colour in Trudy Heiss’ renowned hanging baskets, the backdrop for Gray Monk’s new releases is an ideal compliment to the delicious new wines. This year is no exception; the new releases are coming on stream, and Gray Monk offers one of the most generous wine tasting programs in the Valley. Guests can sample four wines from each of their Estate and Latitude series at no cost. The Odyssey series is just $5 for four samples. There’s something for every palate in each of the three series. The 2015 Chardonnay has already been released. Aged in stainless steel tanks, this satisfying sipper is reminiscent of crisp apple and lemon rind. Their ever-popular Ehrenfelser is due on the shelves any time now and their 2015 Pinot Gris will be released this summer. The Pinot Gris is consistently one of Gray Monks’ top offerings, according to Proprietor Trudy Heiss. Gray Monk’s on-site restaurant, The Grapevine, will open for lunch and

dinner at the beginning of May. Their eclectic and varied new menu promises to be a crowd pleaser. The Heiss family and the team at Gray Monk look forward to welcoming you to the winery this summer!
