History • One of the few grapes with no origin • Found predominately in France, has spread from other parts of the Mediterranean • Wine was brought by the Romans in the 3rd century AD • The name ʻViognierʼ comes from the town named ʻVienneʼ in France, a Roman
outpost • Viognier is only produced on only 700 acres in France. • The varietal has a lot of problems currently growing in France due to mildew and
insect problems
Grape Characteristics • When ripen, deep yellow color • Aromas of perfume, floral • Their peak is around 15-20 years • The flavors are more dry • Low acidity • “garden meets orchard” was used to describe this varietal • High alcohol content Preferred Climate and Growing Conditions • Difficult to grow as it attracts mildew, which kills the grape • The varietal has an unpredictable yield annually due to its particular-ness to when
picked • They should only be picked when fully ripe • Grown best in the Mediterranean climate due to it moist and windy climate • Started being grown in California and Australia Typical Winemaking Practices • The varietal has become predominate in blending with other whites • Sometimes blended with reds to stabilize the coloring in a red • They should only be picked when fully ripe • When picked, it should be harvested in the early morning • The time of year is around late fall
