    Deacons

When I tell people that I am learning to be a deacon, I often getasked, What does a deacon do? and What made you pursue that?

I will attempt to answer those two questions in this brief piece.

In the Episcopal tradition, the vocational deacon (as opposed to thetransitional deacon, who is someone on the way to becoming a

priest) , is an ordained person who is called to serve the Church andthe community. Deacons differ than priests in which priests are paid

and assigned to care for a parish. Deacons do not get paid, andprimarily serve the diocese and bishop, with a special interest in

caring for the poor, sick and needy. They are to be the bridgebetween the Church and the outside world- to be a roving reporterof sorts. They are to inform the Church where there are needs to bemet. This is to make sure the Church is in touch with the community

rather than be cloistered behind cathedral and church walls .Deacons have a special role in the liturgy. They are permitted toread the Gospel, assist with communion and set the table, read

Prayers of the People , preach, and give the dismissal. They can alsoassist the priest in weddings, baptisms and funerals. At first glance, priests and deacons look the same: both wear clerical shirts and

collars, both use the tile The Reverend , both wear albs (the lightcolored gown-like garment) and cassocks (the black gown-like

garment) . The deacon is distinct in that he or she wears a stoleacross the body like a sash.

Large churches and small churches alike can have deacons. Whenresearching St. Lukes history, I did not see any evidence that St.

Lukes ever had a deacon, but I dont know for sure. Largecathedrals can often have a deacon or two.

So how does one become a deacon? The process of becoming adeacon varies from diocese to diocese, but generally one must

commit to a period of a few years of a rigorous program oftheological study, service to the community, service in a clinical

setting such as a hospital and service in a parish. Guidance comesfrom the director of the program, the bishop, a spiritual director and

usually a mentor as well. The end result is ordination. Deacons areordained by the bishop as laid out in the Book of Common Prayer. Before one is accepted into a diaconate program, one must go

through a discernment process. This starts when you make it knownto your parish priest that you have a calling to become a deacon.

You are given guidance and support, and given direction as to whatthe next steps are to take.

Please let us know who you are by signingour guest book (by the door) or filling out a cardfound in the pews. You can hand your card to anusher, or put it in the collection plate when it comeslater.

    P.2

The discernment process involves your priest, your vestry, your bishop and a committee in the diocesethat is charged with selecting people for Holy Orders. There are interviews with the bishop and thecommittee. Unlike a job interview in the secular world, in this situation you are asked to disclose muchinformation on your personal life and spiritual growth so they get a clear picture of who you are. Thisprocess can take months as you take time to reflect on your calling, complete the required paperwork, and

your file gets assembled in the diocese. A final interview takes place and you are informed if you areaccepted into the program and become a postulant, and take on the role of learning to carry the Gospel outinto the world.

The diaconate was a calling to me because I have a passionate love for serving in the liturgy and servingthe poor and the hungry. The Church needs more deacons. Becoming a deacon and being a deacon issomething one can do while continuing to work in their career. In my opinion, the role of the deacon isnot talked about nearly enough in the Church, but I think this is starting to change.

St. Lukes has been enormously supportive of me during this process. As I celebrated my 5th anniversaryof my baptism this week, I stand in awe of how this cute little church gave me my spiritual foundation, and has granted me rich experience, growth, knowledge and friendships that are beyond measure. Iwouldnt be where Im at without you.

    God Bless and Happy Easter!

    Church School / ursery

    Church School will be

    meeting on May 1st

    and May

    15th at 10:20 a.m. in the

    church hall. The children

    will be celebrating the

    Easter season with stories,

    activity booklets, music and

    crafts. All children 3 years

    and older are welcome to

join. The good news is that

    our church school has been

    gradually growing. Vestry

    has requested that we

    extend the number of

    meetings to include every

    Sunday. In discussing this

    change with the teachers, it

    was decided that we need

    more volunteers. Miah has

agreed to be an assistant, as

needed. Ashley, Cindysdaughter, has agreed to help

as a teacher in the fall. We

    are very grateful for their

    willingness to help. Please

    let Barbara know if you

would be able to help either

as a teacher or assistant for

    the fall season, starting in

    September. The teachers will

    be scheduled on a rotating

    basis, which would amount

    to once a month.

    P.S. Thanks to all who

    donated candy and baskets

    to make our annual Easter

    Egg Hunt a success!

    150th Anniversary

The Vestry has approved two important things for

our anniversary celebration on October 15, 2011.

We have selected a caterer from the area, as

requested at a previous meeting. Kellys Restaurantwill be supplying the food. Bryan Kelly was very

gracious and gave us the best deal for the meal. We

will not be adding the additional cost of the servers

since Laura, Brittany, Sara N., and Miah have agreed

to fill those positions. The menu and reservation

form will appear in the September Ox. Jackie has

generously offered to supply a sheet cake for the

    dinner.

We have also decided to order a two-sided banner

to advertise the event; John Litzke will be makingthe arrangements for the banner to be made. It will

be attached atop our sign on Welsh Road and will

remain up even after the celebration to advertise

St. Lukes longstanding presence and service in the

    community.

The next planning meeting will be held in the

church office on Monday, May 23rd

    at 7p.m. This

will be the last meeting before the summer. Anyone

    interested is welcome to attend.

    Easter Concert

The Greater Philadelphia Chorale, of which Barbara

Kaufold and George Rutter are members, will be

presenting an Easter concert at Holy Family

University in the gymnasium on Saturday, May 7th

    at 7p.m.

The music includes beautiful religious, secular and

patriotic selections. There will be a free will

    offering.

    A short history of medicine

2000 AD - "That antibiotic is artificial. Here, eat this root!"

    A cats view of creation

On the first day of creation, God created the cat.On the second day, God created man to servethe cat.On the third, God created all the animals of theearth to serve as potential food for the cat.On the fourth day, God created honest toil sothat man could labor for the good of the cat.

On the fifth day, God created the sparkle ball sothat the cat might or might not play with it.On the sixth day, God created veterinaryscience to keep the cat healthy and the man

broke. On the seventh day, God tried to rest, but hehad to scoop the litterbox.

    The package

There was this gracious lady mailing an old

family Bible to her brother in another part ofthe country."Is there anything breakable in here?"asked the postal clerk. "Only the TenCommandments," answered the lady.

    Does God exist?

A college student was inPhilosophy class, where a classdiscussion about whether or notGod exists was in progress. The professor had the following

logic: "Has anyone in this classseen God?" Nobody spoke."Has anyone in this class touchedGod?" Again, nobody spoke."Has anyone in this class everheard God?"When nobody spoke for the thirdtime, he simply stated, "Thenthere is no God!"One of the students did not likethe sound of this, and asked for

permission to speak. Theprofessor granted it, and thestudent stood up."Has anyone in this class seen ourprofessor's brain?" he asked.

5 Things You ever Knew Your Cell Phone Could Do

For all the folks with cell phones. (This should be printed and kept in your car, purse, and wallet.

Good information to have with you.) There are a few things that can be done intimes of grave emergencies.

Your mobile phone can actually be a life saver or an emergency tool for survival.Check out the things that you can do with it:

    FIRST (Emergency)

The Emergency Number worldwide for Mobile is 112. If you find yourselfout of the coverage area of your mobile network and there is an Emergency, dial 112and the mobile will search any existing network to establish the emergency number for you, and interthis number 112 can be dialed even if the keypad is locked. Try it out.

    SECOD (Locked Keys in Car)

Have you locked your keys in the car? Does your car have remote keyless entry? This may come in handy someday. Goodreason to own a cell phone:

If you lock your keys In the car and the spare keys are at home, call someone at home on their cell phone from your cellphone. Hold your cell phone about a foot from your car door and have the person at your home press the unlock button, holding it near the mobile phone on their end. Your car will unlock. Saves someone from having to drive your keys toyou. Distance is no object. You could be hundreds of miles away, and if you can reach someone who has the other'remote' for your car, you can unlock the doors (or the trunk).

    THIRD (Hidden Battery Power)

Imagine your cell battery is very low. To activate, press the keys *3370#. Your cell phone will restart with this reserveand the instrument will show a 50% increase in battery. This reserve will get charged when you charge your cell phonenext time.

FOURTH (How to disable a STOLE mobile phone?)

To check your Mobile phone's serial number, key in the following Digits on your phone:

*#06#. A 15-digit code will appear on the screen. This number is unique to your handset. Write it down and keep it

    somewhere safe.

If your phone is stolen, you can phone your service provider and give them this code. They will then be able to block yourhandset so even if the thief changes the SIM card, your phone will be totally useless. You probably won't get your phone

back, but at least you know that whoever stole it can't use/sell it either. If everybody does this, there would be no point inpeople stealing mobile phones.

    And Finally....

FIFTH (Free Directory Service for Cells)

Cell phone companies are charging us $1.00 to $1.75 or more for 411 information calls when they don't have to. Most ofus do not carry a telephone directory in our vehicle, which makes this situation even more of a problem. When you needto use the 411 information option, simply dial:

    (800) FREE411 or(800) 373-3411 without incurring any charge at all. Program this into your cell phone now.

    Archbishop of Canterbury

Details ofAugustine'slife arescarce.Believed tohave been apupil ofFelix, bishop ofMessana, he

became a monk and later Prior of StAndrew's in Rome. He was sent byPope Gregory to lead a party of around30 monks to bring England (such as itwas) under the influence of the Romanworld. The journey was halted at onepoint, the monks losing their nerve andreturning to Rome, before successfullylanding at Ebbsfleet in 597. Receivedcautiously by the King of Kent,Ethelbert, Augustine managed toestbalish a community of monks basedfirst at St Martin's church, later

transferring to the site of the presentCathedral.

Augustine struggled to establish hisauthority within the British Isles and didnot bring to completion Gregory's planto form an English church based on twoprovinces and twelve bishops.

He died on May 26th, now rememberedas his feast day, but the year of his deathis uncertain, between 604 and 609. Hewas buried at what is now called StAugustine's Abbey.
