Carol For A Cause

By Stephanie Van Kampen

The ELIMINATE Project is a campaign, created by Kiwanis International and UNICEF, that strives to eliminate Maternal Neonatal Tetanus (a completely preventable disease, cured by an inexpensive vaccine) by 2015. Circle K’ers worldwide have been supporting this initiative since 2010, and on Tuesday, December 9th, our UW-Madison Circle K Club set out to raise funds for the ELIMINATE Project by singing Christmas carols to the homes of one lucky Madison neighborhood. Our club joined forces with the Edgewood College Circle K, giving us a big, enthusiastic group of carolers full of holiday spirit. The group went from door to door, surprising families with a number of Christmas carols, from “We Wish You a Merry Christmas” to “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.” After singing a song or two, we explained our cause, the ELIMINATE project, to each resident, asking for a donation. Lucky for us, the residents we visited were very generous, and our club raised about $120.00 to contribute to the ELIMINATE project. Not only were we happy to raise these funds, but it was great to raise awareness for this cause and educate the community on this important campaign. A great time was had by all, and we’re glad we were able to make a contribution to one of the club’s major causes. Thanks to all who attended, and we hope to see you at next year’s Caroling for a Cause event!

On December 5th, many K Family members from around the area gathered in Madison for the annual K Family Hockey Night to watch the Wisconsin Badgers hockey team take on the Penn State Nitty Lions. Even though the Badgers weren’t able to pull out the victory (they lost 5-2), a good time was still had by everyone who attended. We even had our Key Club pals from the Wisconsin-Upper Michigan District and a sprinkle of other Kiwanis members visit. The event provided an opportunity for members to spend time with friends in the Kiwani family, and for Madison students, the perfect study break before the beginning of the dreaded finals week. UW-Madison Circle K had a marvelous showing at the social, with a whopping total of 19 members in attendance. ON WISCONSIN!!!

Shelter From The Storm is an all breed dog and cat rescue located on the East Side of Madison. Our UW-Madison Circle K club has been volunteering with this amazing organization for almost four years now and we have seen many of the animals we’ve worked so closely with be adopted out. There are two main ways you can volunteer with Shelter From The Storm through our club: dog walking and adoption days at PetSmart.

Dog Walking

On Sundays for around 1-2 hours, we

go to the shelter and walk several of

the dogs around in the surrounding

neighborhood. This is a fun way for

you to get to know the dogs and to

give the dogs some much needed

exercise.

PetSmart Every Saturday, the shelter brings their dogs and cats to PetSmart to allow potential adopters to see them. They need us to come in the afternoon to help take the dogs out every hour for a bathroom break outside and to help pack up the crates afterwards.

Meet some of the dogs! These super cute pooches are just a few of the many you could volunteer with through dog walking and PetSmart.

Dmetri This very smart, one year old Pit Bull

Terrier mix pup is a quick learner and

is eager to please. He just graduated

from doggie training class and has a

ton of energy.

Mickey Mickey the Chihuahua is around 3 đ years old and loves to be a snuggly lap dog. He especially enjoys burrowing into blankets and taking over dog beds.

The Social Segment

Hey UW-Madison Circle K!

With the beginning of the new semester, remember; Good grades,

enough sleep, a social life...You can only pick two. As Circle K Badgers, we

all know that the answer is 1. Good Grades…and 2. A Social Life. More

specifically, a social life that exists within our Social K events.

Remember, many people look forward to the New Year or a new

semester for a new start on old habits. Let’s improve from past wrongs and

put new creative ideas into practice, together as a club. Whether it be for

social events, service, or fundraising. I’m looking forward to seeing you all at

our first meeting to kick off the new spring 2015 semester.

On Wisconsin!

District & International News

Greetings, Members!

What a wonderful semester it has been for the UW-Madison club and the Capital Division! I would like to thank all of you for your hard work and dedication to serving the Madison community. UW-Madison’s contribution of service, leadership, and fellowship to the Capital Division makes our division one of the finest in the district.

As second semester quickly approaches us I would like to remind all of you about District Convention, also referred to as DCON. It will be held in Eau Claire, WI on the weekend of February 27 to March 1. DCON is a time to meet other members from the district and celebrate a wonderful year of service. Rachael will be bringing it up at future meetings. Please stay tuned for more details.

Going along with District Convention, another topic I would like to bring up is the district board elections. If you are interested in running for a district board position, or want to learn more about the different positions before making a decision, feel free to talk to me, a member of the current district board, or one of our district administrators.

If you have any questions, comments, or suggestions about the district, please do not hesitate to ask me. I look forward to another great semester of Circle K with everyone!

Live to serve, love to serve!

DAYNA’S DIYLooking for an easy way to spice up your room on a budget? Fun and festive bunting is perfect! I’ve loved the look of bunting for a while after seeing it on Pinterest and Etsy, but never saw a good tutorial on how to make it and it cost way too much on Etsy. So I figured out how to make it myself and I’m here to teach you how to make this easy bunting that will be a perfect way to decorate your room, and it won’t damage the walls either!

WHAT YOU NEED:

Felt, Twine, Scissors, Sharpie, Ruler, Hot glue gun

1. To get started you’ll need your felt, ruler and Sharpie. Start by measuring 10 cm strips, using the Sharpie to draw it on one side of the felt.

Page 11: Winter Bulletin UW-Madison Circle K

2. After drawing the 10 cm strips, continue by making them into 10x10 squares adding them using the Sharpie and ruler.

3. Once you have your felt covered in squares, you’ll need to make your triangles. To do this you will mark every 5 cm so you know where the halfway point is in your square. Then start drawing your triangles, from the corner to the halfway point.

4. Now that you’ve drawn all your triangles, cut them out

***Optional Step: if you want any sort of writing or decoration on your bunting, now would be the time to add it using puff paint, Sharpies, or whatever you want to use.

Page 12: Winter Bulletin UW-Madison Circle K

5. With your triangles all cut out, you’ll get the length of twine necessary, you’ll want an extra 6 in at least on each side you have something to hang up your bunting with. Begin gluing your triangles to the twine. (I like the look of the twine showing, so I glue the twine to the front of the felt; but, you can do whatever you prefer!)

Once everything has dried, your project is complete, now it’s time to find

somewhere to hang your adorable bunting!
