The Winslow Concert Band in 2007Last year proved to be a good one for the Winslow Concert Band. We continued our drive to actively promote the band’s presence in the area and this bore fruit both in attracting new players and in securing bookings.
We now have a membership of over 40 musicians playing a variety of brass, woodwind, percussion and bass guitar. In addition we also have our valuable crew of non-playing supporters who do everything from admin jobs to selling raffle tickets, from shaking collection buckets to the most important job of all - making tea at rehearsals!
Band bookings also increased in 2007 - a total of 15 engagements in and around the area made it one of the busiest years in the band’s history. These included Winslow Show, various church and village fetes, several events organised by the Buckingham Town Council, some private parties and playing at Christmas in the MK Centre.
One of the highlights of 2007 was our participation in the BBC’s Play It Again campaign. This was designed to encourage people at all ages and stages either to take up music for the first time or to dig a long-unplayed instrument out of the loft and start blowing or bowing it again. We decided to bring our now annual open evening under the umbrella of Play It Again and went along to the BBC’s Watford event to promote it. Those of us who went so enjoyed playing alongside the BBC Concert Orchestra that we organised a band outing to the Birmingham event this time with the BBC Big Band playing a version of “Sing, Sing, Sing” (watch out for a taste of this in tonight’s performance!). What is more, we welcomed ten new players to our open evening and many of these are now regular members.
We wish all of you a very happy and prosperous 2008 and hope to see you at our annual winter concert in 2009.

And with over 23 years’experience working with some of the biggest business-to-business brands in Europeand North America, we know how to put a good line-up together – one that will keepyour customers coming back time after time.
If you’d like to strike a chord with your target market we’re confident we can help. Call it our competitive nature but when it comes to business we like to keep score.

Welcome... to our annual winter concert. We hope you enjoy yourselves - please make use of the bar facilities at the rear of the hall and be sure to enjoy the refreshments on offer during the interval.
To give you a flavour of our history, the Winslow Concert band was formed in 1994 by Peter Moore. In its’ early days the music played was mostly classi-cal, but over time my predecessors and I have introduced a variety of musical genres including big band, jazz, musicals, film themes and compilation hits of popular singers such as Frank Sinatra and Tom Jones.
Tonight’s programme is largely new repertoire for the band and the wide variety of music has been chosen partly to suit the mix of talent of our players, but more importantly to provide what we hope will be an entertaining evening for the audience.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the many members and supporters who have given us their time and facilities without which this evening would not be possible. And our big thanks to you the audience for giving up your Saturday evening to come along and listen.
Should you play a brass or woodwind instrument and be interested in joining us, we generally rehearse here at the Winslow Public Hall on Thursday evenings between 7.30 and 9.30pm. We don’t bite so why not come along and give us a try?
