Helpful Hints New Products

New Product Code SystemWe now have three codes for our Super Potted Liners. The code ending in PL01 signifies it is a first-year potted plant, and the code ending in PL02 is a plant that has been carried over for a second year. The second-year plants will be a bit more robust.

The code ending in PL03 signifies it is potted in a 3-gallon size plastic pot. These plants are generally taller and have a bigger root system. They are best for pick up only as they are heavy and therefore shipping will be expensive.

New Products

Korean x Balsam FirAbies koreana x Abies balsamea

This cross seeks to retain the best qualities from the Korean fir, including a silvery-white flash on the bottom of the needles, a light, pleasant citrus scent, and excellent needle retention. This cross also utilizes the balsam heritage to correct one of the most frustrating aspects of the Korean fir, the crooked growing trunk. Now available as Jiffy® plugs.

Now available as Jiffy® plugs.

Rocky Mountain Juniper Juniperus scopulorum

A juniper native to the Rocky Mountains and Northwestern Great Planes. Similar to Juniperus virginiana (Eastern Red Cedar) with several important distinctions:

• Grows to a smaller nature height (~20-30 ft.) and spread (~8-12 ft.)• Grows at a slower rate (approximately 1 ft. per year)• Retains its color throughout the year• Much less tolerant of shade and more susceptible to disease related

to humidity• Features more upright branching designed to shed snow

more efficiently, allowing for less snow breakage

Colorado Blue Spruce ‘Majestic’Picea pungens var. glauca ‘Majestic’

With exceptional growth patterns similar to our existing Kaibab offerings, the Majestic seed source is the best selection available for coloration. It boasts a more vibrant and intense blue, exhibited over a greater portion of the tree.

Trojan FirAbies nordmanniana subsp. equi-trojani

A subspecies of the Nordmann fir studied extensively along with Turkish fir through the CoFirGE project. The project findings indicate Trojan fir is resistant to disease. Of most significant interest is the Phytophthora root rot that plagues Fraser fir.

A slower growth initially increases as the tree matures. This species of fir makes a beautiful Christmas tree. One of the most popular selections in Europe, this tree features strong branching with soft needles.

Bare root and containers available Spring 2021.

Helpful Hints New Products“ I have been extremely pleased with the product I’ve received from Vans Pines. I’ve ordered bare root, Jiffy® Plugs, peat quarts, and gallons. All sizes have been very impressive, and we have had a high success rate. The customer service has been excellent! The pricing is a bit higher than what I am used to paying, but with such good survival rates, I have saved money overall.”

~Ken Prince from KP Tree and Nursery

Product Selection Guide

Plug Selection GuideField Transplant Beds With Weed Control and Irrigation: 1-year, 36mm and 50mm A/G® Jiffy® Plugs

Field Transplant Beds Without Weed Control And/Or Irrigation: 2-year, 50mm A/G® Jiffy® Plugs, Husky and Jumbo Husky transplants, and Plantable Peat Pots quart

Container Production: 1-year, 36mm, 50mm A/G® Jiffy® Plugs, Super Potted Liners®, and Plantable Peat Pots for up potting

General Field Lining Out: More difficult situations such as Christmas trees and B&B production: 2-year, 36mm, 50mm A/G® Jiffy® Plugs, Super Potted Liners®, and Plantable Peat Pots

Field Lining Out: For poor sites, extreme drought conditions, or fill-in plantings without weed control, we recommend Super Potted Liners® and Plantable Peat Pots.

We DO NOT recommend transplanting 1-year evergreen Jiffy® Plugs directly into the field as they are not strong enough to compete with native vegetation or withstand a drought. Therefore, we will not entertain any claims for losses when transplanted in this manner. 1-year plugs are well suited for transplant beds where vegetation control and irrigation are provided or when transplanted into containers. We offer 2-year plugs for this very reason as they are specifically grown for one more year so they can successfully be transplanted for open field production such as Christmas trees or B&B, etc.

Product Descriptions Vans Husky® transplants (plug+1) are grown in field beds using A/G® Jiffy® plugs. These plugs quickly develop an extensive lateral root system that pushes top growth to double their original top size. These transplants have such massive roots that most selections can be root pruned (Up to the bottom 1/3 of roots) to make transplanting by machine or by hand easier.

Vans Jumbo Husky® transplants (plug+2) are the same trees as our Husky transplants only grown on for one more year. This second growing season produces larger tops, heavier caliper, and increased root mass. These transplants are typically 1' – 3' tall, depending on species. They require some root pruning (Up to the 1/3 bottom of the root) as the roots are as long as the tops are tall. While these transplants typically go thru transplant shock like all bare root stock, modest top growth of 4" – 10" can be expected under normal transplant conditions.

Our Super Potted Liners® and Plantable Peat Pots are planted using our one year A/G® Jiffy® Plugs. Most selections finish out the first season, but the slower growing types (Nordmann & Turkish Fir, etc.) take two growing seasons before they have a saleable top size. Faster crop rotation and the near 100% survival rates are the two main reasons for using Vans Super Potted Liners® and Plantable Peat Pots. Many growers claim they average two and sometimes three years less growing time to market size. Another feature is no transplant shock, so the trees quickly root out into the surrounding soils and push fast top growth even in the first growing season. Also, there is no rush to get them into the ground like bare root. You can take your time, weeks if necessary, to out plant. Our Super Potted Liners® and Plantable Peat Pots are produced to grow either in the field or another container. They are not intended for retail sales. We do not shear or shape them but let them grow naturally.

New Product Code SystemLast year by request, we split our Super Potted Liner® codes into 1- and 2-year SKUs. This change was incredibly well received and accompanied by requests to update our container SKUs to be consistent with the rest of our catalog offerings. We listened! Containers will now be graded and inventoried by both size and age.

Clay Planting TipIf you are planting in heavy clay soil with poor drainage, we do not recommend digging a hole and filling with higher drainage soil. This essentially creates a bowl that fills with water, drowning the plant’s roots. We recommend mounding well-draining soil roughly 1-2 ft above your soil to plant into, allowing water to drain out of the soil onto the clay surface.

Tips for Working With A/G® Jiffy® PlugsWe like fresh air! Upon arrival, please open your boxes and inspect for damage during shipping. If not planting immediately, trees can be stored in their open boxes in a cool, shady location for up to 5 days. Do not store in closed containers, this will encourage mold growth on the tops if not stored between 28 - 32 degrees.

Do not ‘mess’ with the netting. The mesh netting is designed to be planted and will not hinder root growth. Keep our socks on!

Pull the blanket up just right! Plant plugs so that the netting is covered with 1/4 to 1/2 inch of soil (no more)! If you plant deeper in heavy soils, you will slowly kill the trees over time as the crown line rots, thus girdling the tree.

Helpful Hints

Jiffy® PlugsWhat is an ‘accelerated growth’ plant? Our climate-controlled greenhouses, home to over 3 million plugs a year, is a special world. Regulated heat, water, air, supplemental light, and nutrients optimize growing conditions 24/7. Vans Pines’ A/G® trees attain the size typical of two- or three-year-old field-grown seedlings in just six months.

• What are the advantages of A/G® Jiffy® Plugs over Bareroot Seedlings?

• Superior 360° lateral root systems that rapidly expand to anchor plants.

• Amazing first season growth, often double to triple top height.

• No transplant shock...superior survival... usually near 99%!

Vigorous growth quickly establishes plants to survive late-season dry periods and tough sites.

• Soft-walled, plantable plug containers deliver root protection during shipping, handling, and planting.

Vans ‘Cape’ American Beach Grass

Stolon/Culms 8-18 in. MI 3-8 GCG SS 08 1.49 1.13 0.76 0.34 0.28

Established on the shores of the lakes throughout the Great Lakes Basin from Duluth,MN to Buffalo, NY, this beach grass is widely spread out over many states. Thisbeach grass has a yellow-green blade color. Overall, nursery produced beach grass ismore vigorous than those collected from old strands. Vans American Beach Grasscan be planted on the northern one half of the Atlantic coast and has been plantedsuccessfully on the pacific NW coast.

This type of grass was selected from natural stands on Cape Cod, MA. Through its plant materials center, the USDA, managed by the NRCS at Cap May NJ, spent many years developing the ‘Cape’ selection using the comparative observation evaluation process. After testing and evaluation, the selected grass was released to the public through commercial nurseries under the name of ‘Cape’ selection in 1973. We got our starter ‘Cape’ plants from the Cape May plant material center. This dune grass has more of blue-green blade color and a slightly wider blade. While the ‘Cape’ selection was specifically developed for the Atlantic coast from Maine to North Carolina, it also grows vigorously in the Great Lakes Basin.

Van’s Water GelThis water retention aid has gelatinized, nontoxic starch that increases moisture retention of plants and soil. The small, dry flakes, when mixed with water, absorb and retain 200 times their weight, releasing and reabsorbing water for several months. It can be used to coat seed or plant roots before planting.

Q: Do you have to have a business or nursery license to order? A: No, you do not. Anyone can purchase from Vans Pines Nursery!

Q: Do we have to pick up, or can it be shipped? A: You may come to our location in West Olive, Michigan, to pick up your trees, or we can ship your order to your farm using FedEx ground and freight services.

Q: Why do we need a 25% deposit? A: Because inventory is in such high demand, we require a strong commitment to the order in the form of a 25% deposit.

Q: When do we need to pay the balance? A: Balances are required to be paid six weeks prior to shipping to guarantee their ship week, or 30 days after receipt for Net 30 customers. Orders paid after their due dates based on terms may be rescheduled to the next available shipping week.

Q: Why do we have to substitute what we have already reserved? A: Remember, we are dealing with live goods. Our product goes through two grading processes to ensure you receive the best quality plants. Depending on our growing season weather-wise, sometimes our projected heights don’t reach what we anticipated. We try to let you know as soon as possible if there will be any substitutions.

Q: Can I change my order? A: Yes, we do accept order adjustments before shipping. Changes to orders within two weeks of their scheduled ship date may be rescheduled for the next available ship week to accommodate the request.
