wishes are a team effort

paul Kruegerpresident and CeO

wishes start with a referral from a medical professional, parent or family member or the kids themselves. the child’s primary doctor helps determine if the child qualifies based on make-a-wish’s criteria. if the child does qualify, a team of volunteers is put into place and goes out to visit with the child to help determine their wish. from there the make-a-wish staff and volunteers work with the child and parents to do everything they can to make the wish, whatever it may be, a magical experience for everyone involved.

the point is, wishes do not happen on their own. it takes a team of individuals along the way to fulfill each child’s wish.

to everyone who commits their time, talents and treasure to make-a-wish® south Dakota, thank you. we would not be able to grant each child’s wish without the commitment of our volunteers or the generosity of our donors. whether it’s one of the kids and schools who participated in our Kids for wish Kids® program, an adopt-a-wish® or Driving for Dreams® partner or the business who provided in-kind support to make a wish possible, we are grateful. with the summer months upon us, several key events will be taking place. Combined, these events raise a significant amount of support to help make wishes come true throughout the year. to the event organizers and all who participate as volunteers and donors, thank you!

finally, to the medical community across the state and in bordering states, thank you for helping make parents aware of make-a-wish, for being key referral sources and educating others about our mission.

together, we will continue toward our vision of making every eligible child’s wish come true.

Brian graDyChair, Board of Directors

Wish Perspective

1

make-a-wish has given our family a memory that will last not only one lifetime, but five. Natallie is the youngest of ryan, my husband, and my three little girls. with Natallie i had a normal pregnancy and delivery, and we went home after a couple days in the hospital like anyone else. although i wasn’t sure what was going on i knew in my heart something was wrong with Natallie after a week or two, of being home. at five weeks old Natallie had her first grand mal seizure. i was sitting with Natallie and noticed her doing some weird movements with her legs and arms and then she started to turn blue.

i rushed Natallie to the hospital where they started Ct scans, mri, blood work and her first of many eeGs. it took less than two hours of walking in those hospital doors until Natallie was put into her first induced coma to stop the seizures.

at this time we were told everything was going to get better, what we all hoped for. instead Natallie became too complicated for the local physicians and she was flown to mayo. Natallie spent much of her first year of life within the walls of the pediatric intensive care unit (PiCU) at mayo. when we did get to sneak home, it never lasted more than a week before we were right back where we started.

after too many hours of eeGs to keep track of, multiple mri’s, over 30 tried and failed seizure medicines, we came home with a new plan. Natallie will have seizures but we will live at home together as a family. at home as a family we will live every day to its fullest and never take another moment for granted.

Natallie suffers from a seizure disorder called malignant migrating seizure disorder with a sCN2a gene mutation. she is the first person to ever have her specific diagnosis. what this means for Natallie is she has seizures daily. in the worst of times she averaged 125 seizures a day. on better days she only has around five seizures a day. my biggest fear in those early days of her illness was that her big sisters wouldn’t remember Natallie if we lost her like the doctors had been preparing us for. this is when i first started to hear about make-a-wish. other kids around

Natallie were qualifying for wishes, as they were fighting along with Natallie for their life. only thing that was different from Natallie to those kids is that she was only seven months old. the doctors were unsure how long Natallie’s little body and brain would be able to handle all the seizures. at one point we were told not to expect to ever get to take Natallie out of the hospital and it was likely she would only live for a couple months longer.

what the doctors didn’t know then is that Natallie is a tough little fighter. she has defied many odds that were stacked against her. she is now 3 ½ years old and lives at home with her daddy, big sister mackenzie, big sister Brooklynn and me, her mommy. although she isn’t able to run around and yell and scream like most three year olds, she does however share smiles when she is happy and excited about what is going on. i can tell you that never in Natallie’s three years of life have i seen her smile as much as she did on her make-a-wish trip. this is how i know she loved every minute of it!

i am 100% sure that Natallie’s animal adventure to san Diego, California, created memories that will never be forgotten!!! Not only because we got to do amazing things like feed giraffes, elephants, swim with otters, pet kangaroos and hang out with a sloth and a porcupine just to name a few. But also because make-a-wish gave us one thing that no one has ever been able to give us. a moment in time to step away from the medical side of our lives that we have with Natallie. we got to focus on making memories as a family. enjoying each other and our amazing surroundings every moment of every day. and boy oh boy did we do all of that! the girls still ask on a weekly basis when we get to go back!

thank you make-a-wish and also adopt-a-wish® partners like ours, the sioux falls Downtown Lions Club, for making wishes like Natallie’s come true!

sincerely,

Jess Baker and familysioux falls

Hometown: Bruce – omaha, NeKelly – ogden, ia. But we have been in Vermillion since the late 80’s!

About You:Bruce – Director of sports medicine at the University of south Dakota.Kelly – elementary Pe teacher in Vermillion, coaches high school cross country and track. also coaches wheelchair basketball.

we are both involved with the National wheelchair Basketball association (NwBa), Kelly coaching and Bruce is on the Board of Directors. we have passion for all sports.

Your connection to Make-A-Wish? our connection to make-a-wish south Dakota began when our youngest son Dylan was diagnosed with rhabdomyosarcoma at the age of 10 months and make-a-wish began talking with us. Dylan received his wish less than two years later (walt Disney world) in the summer of 1997.

What made you want to start volunteering for Make-A-Wish? smiles…the way make-a-wish brought smiles back into our families’ lives. we wanted to give back to an organization that could produce those kind of results!

Why do you volunteer for Make-A-Wish? it started as a family project where we wanted to teach our children to give back to our community. it has grown into a passion for helping people that are like us, those facing tremendous odds and needing a ‘lift’. helping provide a reason to smile.

How long have you been volunteers? in 1998 our family shot a video for make-a-wish and shortly after that began training as volunteers.

What is the best part of being involved with Make-A-Wish? there can be no greater gift than helping a child and by extension the family.

we know firsthand what it’s like to face horrible medical odds and in the midst of that receive the gift of a wish! have we mentioned smiles?

Tell us about a memorable wish experience: the most memorable wish would be Dylan’s trip. it is magical what make-a-wish is able to accomplish. when it comes to our wish granting, how do you pick one? that’s like asking which of your children do you love the most? an impossible task…

If you could encourage someone who is thinking about volunteering for Make-A-Wish, what would you tell them? other organizations want your money or your time. make-a-wish will give you back more than you can ever give to them. as you help make-a-wish children and their families you are given back your heart and your smile, you receive way more than you give!

What would your one true wish be? in our video of 1998 i was asked this same question: ‘what would your wish be?’ my response then was that i hoped to see our wish child Dylan someday be able to grant a wish. Dylan was almost four at that time. shortly after his 20th birthday he was our featured speaker at the Vermillion/Yankton Dinner Dance and auction where we have raised funds for make-a-wish. the standing ovation he received after his talk took my breath away and i realized my wish had been granted.
