GEORGIA O'KEEFFE

Though she painted mostly in oils, O’Keeffe experimented with multiple

media throughout her career, including charcoal, watercolors and pastels.

But, pastels would be the only medium other than oil that she turned to

regularly over the years. Pastels offered her almost pure pigment and the

ability to blur or harden edges. Her fingerprints are often visible in her

pastels, indicating that she often pressed the pigment into the paper.

MIXED MEDIA

In visual art, ‘mixed media’ is an artwork in which more than one type of

medium has been used. “Medium” means paint, crayons, clay, or anything

from which art can be made. Mixed Media is a term for combining two or

more of these materials to create something new. For example, you can

add sculpture to your painting, or use paint, crayon, and marker in the

same piece.
