Magic at our Last Meeting

December’s meeting is generally all about Christmas or Holiday magic and this year was no exception. We had a lot of guests in attendance and a great showing of talent by our members.

Brent Adams performing Cups and Balls

Leading off the evening’s performances was Brent Adams, who delighted everyone with his whimsical singing of Silver Bells as he performed the classic ‘Cups and Balls’ with steel cups and with one of the more difficult loads I have ever seen used: genuine metal Christmas jingle bells. After causing the bells to penetrate the metal cups, when he ended the routine, the small bells had changed to jumbo, metal jingle bells. To conclude, he placed them all in an empty cloth sack and when he reached in, he pulled out a stuffed Christmas doll.

Next up, Tony Cortest did a funny performance as ‘The Great Cheapini’ Tony’s magician cousin from Italy. He performed a card trick with the help of Laura. After losing her card in the deck, he took an indifferent

card, punched a hole in it, then tied a Christmas present tag to it. After losing it in the deck, he asked Laura to pull the indifferent card out of the deck by the tag and lo and behold, it was now Laura’s signed card attached to the tag.

Next, a young man named Aiden allowed Tony to pluck coins out of the air and mysterious from behind his ear, knees and armpits as Tony, I mean Cheapini, did a great Miser’s Dream routine.

Rick Pugh, re-christened as Ricardo Pughini by Cheapini, assisted with his next trick: a do-as-I-do card miracle where the red and black cards separated for Rick just by following the Great Cheapini’s instructions.

Lastly, young Laura hopped up on stage with her crutches to assist Cheapini with his final illusion, the close-up table that Cheapini used throughout the performance. He covered it with a cloth and with the aid of Laura’s concentration, got the table to levitate and float around the stage.

Curtis Waltermire correctly predicts a thought of number

Mentalist, Curtis Waltermire, was up

next to mystify us with his mind. He tossed a paper ball into the audience and had someone select black or red. Black was selected. They in turn, tossed it to another person and they selected a suit. Clubs was chosen. Finally, they tossed to a third person and they selected the Three, so Three of Clubs. For those not paying close attention, Curtis had a card sticking up out of his jacket pocket since he arrived on stage and it was

revealed that that card was indeed, the chosen card: the Three of Clubs.

Curtis (r) duplicates the spectator’s drawing

Curtis then invited a volunteer up on stage to assist with his next miracle. He gave the young man a pad of paper and asked him to draw anything he liked on it, preferably something that has significance to him around this time of year. He did so and placed his drawing in a padded envelope which he held tightly to his chest. Curtis then stood back to back to the young man and successfully duplicated his drawing of a Christmas tree. Great Job, Curtis.

Mike(l) and Glenda(r) and their trained dove

Mike (l) and Glenda (r) introduce Stardust (c)

Mike (r) turns Steve (l) into a dummy

Tony (l) performs the linking rings as Mike (r) and Glenda (c) sing ‘Silver Bells’

Next up, Glenda & Mike Mann. Glenda first did some wonderful silk and feather productions and then placed her feather boa into a small empty crate and upon opening it, the white boa had turned into a live white rabbit.

Obliging our requests, Mike and Glenda sang their beautiful rendition of Silver Bells as Tony (this time as himself) did a beautiful Linking Ring routine to their music and singing.

Rick produces miles of silk ribbons

Rick concludes his routine with not one, but two silk fountains

Rick Pugh takes his bow after turning three colored rings into one large, multi-colored ring

Rick Pugh was next with his beautiful stage and manipulation routine. He produced red silk and then changed it to a metal cane. Then, he did a great routine changing pure white rings to color as he passed colored silk hanky’s through them, then finally, made them all change to a single, large, tri-colored hoop.

Next, he grabbed a large silk, tied a knot in it and then pulled the knot off. He repeated this twice more and when he was done, he showed the silk had 3 large holes in it that were ‘knot’ there before. All of this was placed in a casket and when he reached in to remove it, out came a black piece of cloth which he passed through his hand and it turned rainbow colored. He pulled several large and long rainbow streams of cloth out of the previously empty casket, when then blossomed into long color-changing cascade of silk ending in a humongous, blanket sized silk with a dragon on it.

Then he pulled out a small grocery sack which he showed empty, then he reached in and pulled out a colored silk followed by a small box of flowers. Twice more he repeated the production ending in a large pile of silks and flower boxes too large to even have fit in the bag. Great routine, Rick!

Rick, then invited a young lady named Lily up on stage to help with his final effect. He asked if she had gotten to eat any of the Christmas goodies, which she had. So Rick showed a black & white Christmas poster which he turned around and had Lily sign her name on it. He then asked her to blow with her ‘Christmas Breath’ onto the drawing. When he removed it, the black & white drawing was now filled with brilliant color.

Kyle (l) assisted by Gage (r) with a book test Next up was the newest Wizard, Kyle

Brueggeman, who asked to volunteers, Aiden & Gage, up on stage to help him. He gave

Aiden a small book and asked Gage, the mathematician to come up with a random number. Once the random number was generated, they used the first part of the number as a page number and latter part as a line number. Kyle then asked Aiden to turn to the correct page and line in the book and it indeed matched the prediction that Kyle had written in his envelope.

Ron Margolis always has magic ‘well in hand’

Ron turns paper in cold, hard cash

In addition to providing entertainment in between each act by producing small items from his bare hands, Ron came out for performance in his Santa hat. He showed us how Santa fits all that stuff in his sleigh. He showed an empty urn which he covered and after casting his magic spell, opened to reveal it was full of Christmas Candy Canes which he gave out to the audience.

Ending our Christmas show was three time state champion in storytelling, Sam Seymore. Sam started out by playing original arrangements of Christmas music on the piano. After a great ovation, he told us a wonderful story of how a small, blank envelope contained the greatest gift a family could give to others and how each year, the kids couldn’t wait to find out what their mom and dad had done that year to help or serve others. It was a great ending to a great Christmas show and a great ending to the year.

Sam tells a captivating story about one very special, small, white envelope under the
