In Local News…

Kean University is looking to purchase some of the Merck property across from main campus.

However, Union Township Mayor Clifton People Jr. is concerned about how it would add to

residents’ property tax. If Kean buys a portion of Merck, it would be exempt from taxes. Union

Township is against the schools expansion since it will take away a little over $1 million in

potential property taxes. Kean officials have yet to meet with the towns officials to discuss the

land. Kean University spokeswoman Marsha McCarthy says this is the next step for the school to

“continually enhance Kean University’s world-class educational experience”.

It’s been over a year ago since Hurricane Sandy hit New Jersey and many residents have yet to

see a dime from the government. The federal government gave more than $1.8 billion to New

Jersey for relief aid. Since the money was given, less than 25 percent has been distributed to

residents who are forced to rebuild. New Jersey state officials are positive that there is progress

with the delivery of aid money, recovery programs, and other concerns caused by Hurricane

Sandy. According to a new state report, as of March 31 of the $1.8 billion only $416 million has

been distributed. Other programs have been having issues getting money out to residents, but

nothing like this. Many residents are wondering when they’ll see their share of the money.

Additional fees of almost $1.5 billion are on its way to New Jersey, the state is now deciding a

plan on how to spend the extra money.

Oklahoma wildfire destroys several homes…

Crews battled the fire in Logan County well into the night trying to save the flames from

claiming anymore homes. CBS affiliate KWTV from Oklahoma City reports that the fire

threatened many more homes. Authorities say the fire was the result of a controlled burn that

eventually got out of hand. High winds and the dry conditions are what helped spread the fire in

Logan County and several others in Oklahoma Sunday. The Guthrie Fire Department Chief, Eric

Harlow told reporters the fire broke out around 5p.m. local time and had burned about 4 to 6

square miles by 9p.m.. A confirmed six occupied structures have been burnt by the fire, however

Chief Harlow believes many more have been destroyed. The body of a 56 year old homeowner

was found after he refused to evacuate his home. Thankfully no other injuries have been

reported.

Investigations are underway after a circus performance sends many to the hospital…

While at the Ringling Bros. and Barnum and Bailey Circus in Providence, Rhode Island around

11:45 am, a support frame holding eight acrobats doing an aerial performance collapsed. The

circus crowd of 3,900 was only left to watch as the eight acrobats fell around an estimated 35

feet to the ground with no net to catch them, on top of dancers on the floor. The acrobats are

known as hairialists, while being suspended in the air they put on an aerial performance while

only being held by their hair. Providence Public Safety Commissioner Steven Pare says

inspectors and officials are trying to figure out what caused the metal frame to collapse only

minutes into the performance. All injured were taken to the local hospital where spokesperson

Jill Reuter commented of the 11 admitted, one critical, that all were doing well. This wouldn’t be

the first time a Ringling Bros. aerial performer fell during a performance. One was killed back in

2004 after the chiffon scarf she was twirling on gave way sending the acrobat 30 feet to her

death.

In International News…

On April 14, 276 girls were kidnapped by militants from their school in Chibok, Nigeria. At least

53 of the kidnapped girls were able to escape, bring the total of the missing down to 223.

Protesters all over the world, like London and Los Angeles, have taken to the streets to demand

the captors release the innocent girls. One point the protesters in London have demonstrated is

that the Nigerian government isn’t doing as much as it should. The lack of response from

Nigerian President, Goodluck Jonathan, even had U.S Secretary of State John Kerry ask the

government to step up their rescue efforts. The Nigerian President spoke Sunday that even

though officials do not know the location of the girls, they will find them. President Jonathan is

begging for the cooperation of the parents and guardians of the missing girls in order to learn the

identities of all the victims. Once all identities of the missing girls have been learned, it may

come out to be a larger number of those kidnapped.

Brief summary of how you changed the source material into your own original news story…

When writing my stories the first thing I wanted to avoid was plagiarism. I started by rereading every article. I followed up by rewriting the articles in a narrative form. I wanted to keep my stories interesting and stay focused on keeping my audience, college students.
