1 General
Computer support for the organization and management of warehouses has become
imperative for timely, effective processing of logistic requirements within a company.
The SAP Warehouse Management (WM) application provides flexible, automated
support to assist you in processing all goods movements and in maintaining current
stock inventories in your warehousing complex.
WM supports warehousing processes by making it possible for you to
Define and manage complex warehousing structures
Optimize material flow using advanced putaway and picking techniques
Process goods receipts, goods issues and stock transfers quickly and easily
Selection Criteria
Although it is possible for you to manage warehouse inventories using the Inventory
Management (IM) application component, the primary difference between managing
stock in WM and in IM is that in IM, the system can only display the total stock of a
material for a storage location. If a warehouse is small and easily manageable, then the
use of IM may be sufficient to fulfill your needs.
WM, on the other hand, offers the capability to manage stock quantities in each
individual storage bin in highly complex storage facilities. This means that, with WM,
you can optimize the use of all storage bins, mix pallets belonging to several owners in
randomly slotted warehouses and know exactly where a particular material is located in
the warehousing complex at all times.
Purpose
The Warehouse Management system is used to determine the precise location at which
a material is stored.
Because of the variety of active ingredients, such as narcotics, the pharmaceutical
industry in particular requires a warehouse structure that allows the materials to be
clearly separated.

The WM system enables you to determine a precise location and the associated
attributes for storing materials.
The attributes of storage types such as depots or high rack storage areas allow them to
perform a controlling function. Picking and putaway strategies are defined at storage
type level.
Storage types are further subdivided into storage sections, in which the various
characteristics of the material are taken into account when it is stored.

Integration
The Warehouse Management application is fully integrated into the SAP R/3 system.
Transactions that are initiated in other SAP components result in corresponding tasks in
WM which activate the actual physical transfers within the warehouse.
A few of these activities include:
Material movements and changes in material status, such as releasing goods
from inspection
Material staging to production supply areas
Picking and shipping goods for sales orders
Most activities that take place within WM are initiated in Inventory Management. For
example, most goods receipts, goods issues and posting changes are initiated in IM and
subsequently processed in WM.
WM is also interfaced to Sales and Distribution (SD) through the Shipping module to
process delivery documents for both the integrated WM application and the
decentralized WM system.
The WM interface to Quality Management (QM) allows warehouse administrators to
track and manage inspection lots that are stored in the warehouse.
WM is also interfaced to the Production Planning (PP) system to assist in providing
materials to supply areas in production.

3 Sales and Distribution
You use this picking technique when the picking is carried out from a randomly
organized warehouse using transfer orders.
This technique has the following characteristics:
The document used to remove the material from the warehouse is a transfer
order (TO), which is created in the WMS.
When material is transferred from the warehouse, it can be transferred from
reserve storage as well as a picking area.
The source storage bins for the material are determined by the stock removal
strategy defined for the corresponding storage type.
You can use this picking technique if you require verification of the picked materials.
Unlike the situation with fixed bin picking, the printed transfer order serves as a pick list
for picking the materials required. The confirmation of the physical goods removal
depends upon the confirmation of the transfer order. If you confirm the transfer order,
the picked quantity is deducted from the storage bin and posted to the stock quantity in
the interim storage type.
The stock pick can take place from various storage types (for example, from the main
storage area for replenishment stock and from the fixed-bin storage area). The WMS
selects the storage types and individual storage bins from which to pick the stock in
accordance with the pick strategies defined for these.

3.1 Warehouse Management: Transfer Order for Delivery
Use
A transfer order is generated in Warehouse Management to pick the delivery. The
transfer order is then confirmed before the goods issue can be posted.
3.1.1 Transfer Order for Delivery with the same Quantity
Prerequisites
The Delivery was created and saved. The Condition WMTA (for Items) is automatically
created. The stock have to bee the same quantity like the TO),

Use
These scenario is needed if a reverse goods movement for a Delivery is done, and the
material is need to place in warehouse.
Prerequisites
The reverse goods movement for the Delivery is done. The Material stock is at the
interim storage bin 916 (LS24)

3.4 Warehouse Management: Processing the Putaway of Returns
Use
These scenario need to transfer the material from interim storage to warehouse, after a
Return of Goods. The Stock category is changed to Available Stock (Movement type IM
453).
Prerequisites
The Return-Delivery was created, saved and then the goods receipt posted.
Please save the delivery before posted. (If you post the delivery before the save the
system can not move the Delivery Number information into the dynamic storage bin.)
In the background the system generates a transfer requirement from the interims
storage type 904 to the storage type 001 finished goods, but change the stock category
to available stock in IM (Movement type 453) first.
The posting is automatically created in the background. If the transfer posting could not
be created automatically, because the user has to choose the stock, the system will send
an Express Mail.
The Mail is on the Screen.
Procedure
Express Mail handling
1. Press the button Execute, the systems shows the Message in the Business
Workplace.
2. In the Screen Display Document press the Button Execute.
3. The Systems jumps in the Transaction LB12.

Use
When you post a goods issue in IM, the system generates transfer requirements that are
used as a basis for creating transfer orders.
Purpose
With the assignment of plant/storage locations in Inventory Management (IM) to the
warehouse number in the Warehouse Management System (WM), the total stock
balance between IM and WM remains the same when you post goods receipts and goods
issues that result in stock quantity changes in the system. For these goods movements,
two postings are normally required to complete the process – one in IM and one in WM.
It is possible, however, to almost completely automate this process.
Several activities and key documents are included in the movement of goods in the
warehouse. The most important of these activities and system documents are listed
below. They are described in detail in other sections of this guide. They include:
Goods receipt
Goods receipts are inbound movements of stock that has been received as the result of
a purchase order, production order and for other reasons. All goods receipts result in an
increase in the total stock in IM and WM. The IM posting increases the total stock in IM
and WM at the same time. In this case, WM has a "distribution" function to move the
stock that was posted in IM from the goods receipt area to storage bins in the
warehouse. For this purpose, a transfer order is created to determine the most
appropriate storage bins. After the stock has been moved, the transfer order is
confirmed.
Goods issue
For goods issues, the IM posting decreases the total stock in IM and WM. For example,
the picking of goods for delivery to a customer is a goods issue in WM. In this case, WM
has the function of finding the needed stock quantities in the individual storage bins in
the warehouse and moving them to the goods issue area.

Prerequisites
The Material Master, the control cycle and the assignment supply area until recourses
is correct adjusted
Use
The Warehouse Management (WM) application component is interfaced to the
Production Planning Shop Floor Control (PP-SFC) application component to assist in
providing materials to supply areas in production. The significant advantage for
customers using this WM-PP interface is that it provides pinpoint accuracy in timing the
supply of materials to production storage bins in production supply areas.
The basic concept is for workers in production to be able to order needed materials
themselves, which, in turn initiates the creation of transfer requirements in WM.
Warehouse Management component, then, is responsible for supplying needed
materials to the storage bins in production. It does so by creating a transfer order for
each respective transfer requirement. This is part of the standard WM procedure.
The subsequent goods issue posting reduces the stock quantity of materials that have
been removed from "production" storage bins and no additional activities are required
in WM.
Material Staging
For each material and production supply area in a plant, you must clearly define the
storage bins to which the necessary materials will be supplied and the type of material
staging that will be implemented. This is known as a control cycle.
Advantages
You can request material staging in advance so that the required materials are supplied
using WM (transfer requirement / transfer order) at the correct time. Also, no further
activity is required for the consumption posting.

Prerequisites
When you use the WM component the assignment of plant and storage location to a
warehouse number and from plant and warehouse number to storage location must be
clearly established.
Using WM for material staging requires care and strict discipline in
system handling. Materials may only be used for production by removing
them from production storage bins that were defined for that purpose. If
the needed stock is located in another location, it must be moved from
that location to the production storage bin, because it is from that bin
that the consumption posting will take place. If this practice is not
consistently adhered to, the efficient use of the system will be
significantly hindered by the increase in unnecessary stock differences.
5.1 Stage Remaining Material Quantities for Process Order (release order parts)
Use
To stage Material for Production Process Orders. If no automatically Transfer
Requirement created (as configured in the Production Scheduling Profil) Only use the
Transaction LP10 otherwise proceed with LB10.

6.1 Warehouse Activity Monitor
Use
The functions of the warehouse activity monitor are intended to assist warehouse
administrators to oversee, plan and optimize work processes in the warehouse. It
provides a means to notify responsible personnel in case there are delays or errors in
the overall system. The warehouse activity monitor helps you to identify and correct
warehousing errors or critical processes soon after they occur, thus enabling you to
carry out warehousing transactions in a timely manner.
The warehouse activity monitor provides
Automatic monitoring of warehousing processes
Automatic recognition and display of errors in the warehouse
Support in the analysis of processes in which errors have occurred
Support to error correction
Why do I need the warehouse activity monitor?
The warehouse monitor is useful for several reasons:
Not all warehousing processes are carried out in the system without errors.
Errors are often not recognized until sometime after they have occurred.
The search for the cause of an error and correcting it can be time consuming.
Orders to move stock in the warehouse should always be processed within a reasonable
time period. One of the key features of the warehouse monitoring task is the checking of
timely processing of transfer orders in WM.
Status Indicators
Traffic light icons are used for each of the warehouse activity monitor objects to indicate
their status. The colour of the traffic light indicates the status as follows:

Definition
When you display the critical processes for this object, the system lists all open transfer
orders that were created but have not been confirmed within the time parameters
defined in the system.
Use
The display of unconfirmed transfer orders is used to inform you in a timely manner
whether transfer orders have not been confirmed or processed correctly. If desirable,
you can then check these transfer orders. Since materials are not available in the system
(or for shipment to customers) until the transfer order has been confirmed, it is
important to identify unconfirmed transfer orders quickly.
Procedure
1. Open the folder ‚Unconfirmed transfer orders’ by clicking on it

which have not been fully processed within the time parameters defined in the system. A
posting change is not considered to be fully processed until the status of the posting
change notice has been set to "U" (processed).
Use
The warehouse activity monitor informs warehouse administrators of posting change
notices that were initiated in IM or WM that have not been processed in a timely
manner.

The time requirements for staging were not met.
The time deadline for loading the delivery was not met.
The time period for the goods issue for the delivery was exceeded.
Use
This task is used to inform warehouse administrators in a timely manner whether
deliveries have been processed on schedule. This makes it possible for you to take
necessary measures to ensure on-time deliveries. This task also displays deliveries that
may have been overlooked.
Procedure
1. Open the folder ‚ Critical Deliveries by clicking on it

The existence of negative stock also indicates incomplete processes that can be
displayed by the warehouse activity monitor. For example, these can include:
posting change notices that are not completely processed
goods receipts processed in WM that were not yet posted in IM

6.1.6 Interim storage stock, without movement
Definition
With this task, the warehouse activity monitor can display
stock in an interim storage area
The warehouse activity monitor displays stock in interim storage areas that has not
moved within the time parameters defined in the system.
Stock that exists in interim storage areas always indicates incomplete processes.
Therefore, any stock that remains in interim storage areas for a lengthy period of time is
considered to be critical.
For stock in interim storage areas, the warehouse activity monitor can display the
following open processes:
Critical stock in the interim shipping area for deliveries
This can mean that there are open goods issues for materials that have not yet
been delivered.
Stock in the interim storage area for differences
This can indicate discrepancies (from taking inventory or when confirming
transfer orders) that have not yet been cleared.
Stock in the interim storage area for posting changes
This means that there may be posting change notices that have not been fully
processed.
Stock in the interim area for goods receipts
This indicates that there may be goods that have not yet been stored in the
warehouse.

6.1.7 Critical TRs for Production Supply
Definition
For this object, the warehouse activity monitor displays inconsistencies in stock
quantities that are used for material staging to production.
These critical processes can appear during the staging of materials for production
orders for which fixed production bins have been defined in a control cycle.
Inconsistencies can occur between the transfer requirements and the transfer
requirement quantities that are updated in a reservation when
Transfer requirements are created manually to supply materials to production
storage bins
Reservations are deleted without making necessary corrections to open transfer
requirements in WM
For PP/PP-PI production orders, when components are deleted or
changed, the system modifies the transfer requirements automatically.
For repetitive manufacturing, this automatic process is not available. As
soon as this connection (and therewith, the reservation) is deleted for
which transfer requirements have already been created, the transfer
requirements are not modified.
Use
The determination of such inconsistencies is important because they can lead to
problems when creating transfer orders for the supply of necessary materials to
production.
The warehouse activity monitor is able to determine for which materials and storage
bins inconsistencies exist, therefore, making it possible for you to take necessary
measures to correct potential bottlenecks in production.
