Program Goals for Watkins Mill Preschool Laboratory

In the Early Child Development program, the children learn the school rules and procedures as

well as the proper behavior for school. By following a daily routine, the preschoolers know what

to expect and what is expected of them.

The children spend time interacting with their classmates as well as with the student teachers.

Activities and lessons include hands-on learning in various centers. These centers include: table

toys, blocks, dramatic play, art, math, science, social studies, language arts, outdoors, cooking

and music/movement.

Each day of Preschool there is a theme to explore and discuss. The children complete activities

in various centers relating to the theme. Thus, each child becomes an "expert" on the theme of

the day. There is a wide variety of themes for the school year, some of which include the letters

of the alphabet, school tools, friendship & family, seasons, animals, etc.

The Early Child Development course teacher and the student teachers understand that each child

is very special and unique. Each child needs the time to be an individual and self-sufficient.

To provide each preschooler with one on one attention, a second year student teacher will be

paired with a child. The student teacher will work with the child on activities that are

specifically designed for that preschooler. Some activities include reading books that interest the

child or working on language arts and math lessons.

The student teachers are dedicated and devoted to the well-being and education of each child.

Their goal is to make Early Child Development as enjoyable, and educational as possible.

By the time of their preschool graduation, the preschool children will be prepared to face the

challenges that lie ahead in the upcoming school year for another year of preschool or their first

year of kindergarten. Through the Early Child Development program, the preschoolers will grow

and mature to become future kindergarteners.
