Tyndall’s ‘Class Act’ grew from love of dogs

Ruth Tyndall’s “aha” moment, that moment when she saw her future as a business owner, occurred about 15 years ago when a former Coastsider named
Barbara Allen asked for her help.“I was working at Kibbles, and Barbara asked if I want-
ed to help her show her Pekinese,” Tyndall remembers. One thing led to another and the next thing she knew, Tyn-dall was preparing to take over Class Act Grooming from a woman who became her mentor.
Tyndall says she apprenticed with Allen for about a year, learning the ins and outs of the business and, perhaps more importantly, how to groom dogs that vary in size, shape and temperament.
“It’s not that hard of a business to run,” she said.Tyndall has always loved dogs and currently has five of
her own. She says her favorite breed to work is bichon fries.Tyndall knows her business is more than washing the
family dog and combing out some matted fur. She can be the first to detect real health problems in an important member of the family.
“If they get great mats in their fur, it can pinch. And I see ear infections and skin problems first,” she said.

Main Street Scholars was built on passion for learning

For Jamie Weintraub, a business opportunity emerged when her passion for teaching and community met ne-cessity.
Weintraub had been teaching for 20 years, the last few at a toney school in San Francisco, when her husband came down with a serious illness that landed him in the hospital. She was concerned about him, obviously, but also worried about get-ting to her job in the city. Weintraub is legally blind and count-ed on her husband to drive her to and from work.
“I started tutoring my grandson and some of his friends,” she said. A little teaching on the side snowballed, and soon Main Street Scholars was born. A year and a half later, she had to move into bigger offices and now employs five tutors to help her. She teaches homeschooled kids during the day and helps others with homework and learning concepts in the afternoon.
She’s rightfully proud of the business and that she’s help-ing her adopted hometown as well. She noted that her tutors aren’t teachers, per se, but members of the community with an aptitude for the subject at hand. They include college stu-dents and a real estate professional who excels in math.

Unique Clothing owner had unique path to business

Margo Christiansen has a world of experience in re-tail sales. Literally.
As a teenager of Danish and German decent, she worked in a European boutique with a French design-er. She hitched a ride from Hamburg to the United States with her father, who captained an ocean steamer, and start-ed out selling European furniture up and down the Califor-nia coast before transitioning to her own clothing stores.
Today, the owner of Unique Clothing on Half Moon Bay’s Main Street looks back on 17 years of retail sales on the coast. She found her home on Main Street after run-ning boutiques in Burlingame and Carmel. She says she prefers operating in Half Moon Bay because it’s not as tightly regulated as some other downtown areas.
“Here, I can hang my merchandise outside so people can see it,” she said.
She has both tongue-in-cheek tips and real advice for women who might want to follow in her footsteps.
“Start out with more money than I had,” she says with a laugh. When she turns serious, Christiansen says any new
business owner will have to persevere through good times and tough times and that she should try a realm in which she has knowledge and passion.
