{Plus Three }Essential classics for your jewelry box

By Judy Finman

S uppose you were asked to choose five indispensable pieces ofjewelry? Not many women can narrow down their favoritesto only five baubles.

Gail Kanemoto Hogsett of Walters & Hogsett Fine Jewelers inBoulder (2425 Canyon Blvd., Boulder, 303.449.2626,www.waltersandhogsett.com) offers her nominations for the Big Fivejewelry classics: diamond stud earrings, pearl strand, hoop earrings, classic watch, and right-hand ring.

“Fine jewelry can make you feel feminine, confident andsuccessful,” she says. “Generation after generation, thesejewelry pieces have been must-haves for a woman’sjewelry wardrobe. Each generation may have had avariation on the theme, but the classics havebasically remained the same. Within eachcategory, choose pieces to show off a touch ofyour personality.”

Diamond stud earrings range from prong-set to full-bezel. “The sparkle of a diamondis perfect from blue jeans to elegant formalwear,” Hogsett says. Earring jackets addversatility by changing earring styles.

“Pearl strands vary from irregular shapesto classic rounds in white South Sea, Chinesefreshwater or black Tahitian. Pearls can be wornshort, long, knotted or layered. The diverse

variety of pearls allows you to express yourpersonality and style.”

Hoop earrings take many forms, from hingedearrings that hug the lobe to hoops in every

diameter. “Hoop earrings are flirtatious and sofashionable; there are hoops that sizzle with diamondsor basic hoops in gold or silver. There are hoops atevery price range.”

Hogsett describes a classic watch: “A finetimepiece is more than something that just tells time– it’s a beautiful piece of jewelry.”

The right-hand ring may be “a simple precious-metal ring with no stones, to glittery diamonds or

beautiful colored gemstones. The right hand hastremendous potential to express your style.”

But what about bracelets, gold-chain necklaces, and otherpopular classics or near-classics? Hogsett gives them their due:

“Long chain necklaces, in gold, in sterling, or overlay metals, areanother must-have in today’s fashions. Choose a 36-inch to 40-inchchain, and layer with pearls, beads or other chains, or simply double itfor great versatility.

“A diamond or gemstone bracelet, a charm bracelet, an entirestack of bangles or a single bracelet to snug up to your watch – they’reall fabulous accessories for your wrists.

“Left-hand rings aren’t limited only to brides. Rings with lusciouscolored gemstones, pearls or even diamonds are worn not only on thering finger, but the middle or index finger.”

So five plus three makes a lucky number – and a lucky woman.

W hen Mary Davistells people sheowns Boulder

Jazzercise Fitness Center (5290Arapahoe Ave., Boulder, 303.530.9154,www.boulderjazzfitnesscenter.com),they often quip, Oh, isJazzercise still around?

“I’m trying to get rid of thatold Jazzercise image, whenpeople were wearing leotardsand dance tights,” Davis says.Today, Jazzercise has a catalogueof workout clothes, calledJazzertogs; and Cheryl Burke,two-time champion of Dancingwith the Stars, is the officialJazzercise spokesperson. “Someof her studios do Jazzercise,”Davis says.

It’s true that the Jazzercisedance fitness program was bornin a bygone era, 40 years ago.Since 1969, people of all agesand fitness levels have reaped itsbenefits. It combines elements ofjazz dance, resistance training,Pilates, yoga, kickboxing andmore to create programs forpeople of every age and fitnesslevel. It increases muscle tone, flexibility, balance, strength andendurance, using easy-to-followmovements.

Each 60-minute class followsan exertion curve. Following awarm-up segment is the cardioportion, dancing through high-energy aerobic routines thatstrengthen the heart and lungs, increase endurance, decreasestress, and burn calories.

Next comes musclestrengthening and toning, emphasizing specific muscles byusing hand-held weights orresistance wraps. At the end ofeach class, the cool-down stretchsegment helps elongate musclesto increase flexibility, and returnthe heart rate to normal.

“People love Jazzercise,”Davis says. “In these 40 yearstrendy things have come along. They haven’t lasted, but wehave. Jazzercise has 8,500franchises worldwide. Our

choreography is fantastic, andwe use music that’s on the radionow, sung by popular singers.Every 10 weeks we receivearound 30 new songs. We havea slower version for seniors, another for youth. We havedifferent formats for bodysculpting. We may use handweights or tubes. We get newroutines all the time. I thinkwomen like to dance – andmost of our members arewomen. Our founder was aprofessional dancer.”

When kickboxing came in, alittle of it was added to theroutines. “Pilates and yoga werealways integral to our routines.Ours is really choreographed –we do jazz, rock, country, Latinand more. Ours has morevariety of movement. Thechoreography is consistent inall Jazzercise studios; we havestrict quality control.”

Besides its fitnessaspects, Jazzercise is lifeenhancing. “There’s alot of support, camaraderie andfriendships. It’s notintimidating; youdon’t need to bea size 2.People arecomfortablethere intheirbodies.”Most of themembers arewomen ages35 to 65 and afew youngercollegestudents.

FriendsintroducedDavis toJazzercisewhen shewas in

college. The instructor recruitedher to become an instructor andowner. She bought a franchise 22years ago.

Today Davis trains andcertifies instructors for Colorado,Wyoming and Montana.Instructors take, among otherclasses, a physiology examcertified by the Aerobics andFitness Association of America. All instructors and franchiseowners are certified in theJazzercise method. “It’s all verystructured, according to theAmerican College of SportsMedicine.” Because of Jazzercise,Davis earned a doctorate inphysical therapy; she wasinterested in helping people withthe dancing, modifying it wherenecessary. “There’s a lot of work

behind the scenes to learnto do the choreography;

it is modified fordifferent levels ofstudents for safety.”

What themembers say

The studiohas about 150

active members.“We don’t ask for a

big commitment.We offer a month-to-

month with a monthlyprice of $38. Or youcan do eight weeks for$92. Or you can dropin for $12. If you area first-timer, it’s free.We like to give backto the community. We just did afundraiser for Backin the Swing –women recoveringfrom breastcancer.”

JerryEnright of

Boulder has been doingJazzercise since 1988. “I enjoythe program for the aerobic, dance and strength componentsas well as the variety of changingelements. I have used not onlyweights, but also the step, slideand bands as well as the ball aspart of the program. The classesare fun and interesting with newsongs and routines that changeregularly. The instructors aretrained well and all have theirown style and personality thatlends a unique element to eachclass. I have been to other aerobicclasses in Denver and Boulderand none come close to whatJazzercise offers in terms ofquality of the instructors andclasses. Jazzercise can be doneyear round, rain, sun or snow. Itis a good complement to othersports and activities.”

His wife Isabel has attendedclasses since 1995 and enjoys theclasses, instructors andenvironment.

“People are greeted by theirname in a comfortable andpersonal manner,” Enright says.“I have never felt uncomfortableattending as the only male in theclass. It is a great and fun wayto start a day. It has my full andunqualified endorsement.”

Suzy Williamson ofLongmont is a new Jazzercisemember. “I love Jazzercisebecause it reminds me to dance.I think we forget to dance as weget older. Work, kids, life gets inthe way. I’m always running, cycling, swimming, hiking anddoing yoga, but Jazzercise isdifferent, it’s joyful. It is a great, fast workout incorporatingaerobic activity, weights andfloor exercises. It’s so much funto work out with the music, andI think learning new routinesadds an extra mental dimensionto my workout. It may seemcrazy to drive to Boulder fromLongmont for an hour workout, but it’s just that good and thatmuch fun.”

But matching up theright wine to your entrée canseem a little daunting. Whatgoes with spicy ribs, or Asianglazed chicken, or even just abasic hamburger?

“Grilled meats are cookedusing a dry heat, whichproduces more intense andsmoky flavors,” says PhilMorich, wine manager atLiquor Mart (1750 15th St.,Boulder, 303.449.3374,www.liquormart.com). “Justremember, all food and winepairing is very personal. Theeasiest trick is to match thedensity and texture of thefood you are enjoying withthe wines you like to drink.”

“You can also match theregion and country whereyour recipe originated fromwith the wines that havesuccessfully grown there,”Morich says. “In Europe wehave over 1,000 years of foodand wine pairing history toguide us. We can steal a fewsecrets from the experts whoalready know.”

Tips on pairingbeer with food:

Beer goes well with justabout any grilled entrée. Forsuccessful pairings, match“strong with strong”(“strength” in beer can meanhigh alcohol, high hopbitterness, heavy sweetness,or big roastiness) especiallyfor spicier, smokier dishes.Lighten up on the beerwhen you’re serving moredelicate fare.

Consider complementing(i.e., a spicy-hoppy beer witha spicy dish, a smoked beerwith barbecue, or a maltyamber ale with a caramelizeddish) or contrasting (i.e., amalty-sweet barleywine withstrong blue cheese).

Experts recommend beerswith higher amounts ofcarbonation for fried or spicyfoods because thecarbonation “cuts” throughthe fat and “resets” yourpalate after each bite.

Beer also goes great withdessert. Try a strong stoutwith chocolate truffles orchocolate cake. Or pair aBelgian framboise (raspberry)lambic with cheesecake.

And don’t overlook thelocal products! BoulderCounty offers the fullspectrum of craft beers foryour discovery.

W ith temperaturesnearing thecentury mark,

we’re eager for a bit of relief.A quiet, serene bedroom canoffer the perfect retreat froma hot summer’s day. Gone arewinter’s heavy quilts andflannel bedding, and in theirplace pale colors, cool cottonlinens and fresh-cut flowerscreate a restful ambiance.

And while you might notthink of it, summer is also a

great time to considerreplacing that old mattress,as well. “A good mattress isimportant year-round, ofcourse, but people are muchmore active in thesummertime,” says RhondaHermsen of BoulderComforts (3003 Walnut St.,Boulder, 303.444.4411,www.foamsource.com), “andthey really appreciate a goodnight’s rest even more.”

The company offers bothmemory foam and naturallatex mattresses. Hermsen

explains the difference:“There’s nothing else out

there like memory foam,” shesays. “It uniquely conformsto your body’s contours, which relieves the pressurepoints that can interfere withyour sleep. Some peoplereally like it, but it’s not foreverybody.

“Our latex mattresses arehypoallergenic and madefrom natural rubber. Peoplereally like the purity of latex. There’s pure wool in themattress as well, and the

cover is made of organiccotton. There are nopetrochemicals used in themanufacturing. Parents buythese for their children forthe health aspect. We alsomake crib mattresses, cushions, pillows and beanbag chairs.”

If your current mattress isstill serving you well,Hermsen suggests simplyadding a latex or woolmattress topper; you’ll get alot of the benefits at afraction of the price.

S ummer’s long daysand warmtemperatures is our

cue to get out on the hikingtrails, play some softball, hang out at the swimmingpool, or maybe even catch upon some yard work. Butwhile we’re trying to squeezethe most living we can intoeach day, remembering just afew simple habits can help usstay healthy and ready toenjoy all the fun.

Boulder CommunityHospital’s family practitionerJill Siegfried, M.D. offersthese tips for keeping yourfamily healthy this summer.

OneGet adequate sleep.

“People are more active, which means that they also

need more downtime,” Dr.Siegried cautions. While theactual amount of sleep weneed varies from individualto individual, the NationalSleep Foundationrecommends that school-agechildren get 10 to 11 hourseach night; teenagers needeight to nine hours andadults should get seven tonine hours.

TwoStay hydrated.

Remember to drinkplenty of water, and drinkbefore you get thirsty. Ourbodies are over 60 percentwater, and we need to stayhydrated to stay healthy.Start and end your day withan eight-ounce glass of water. How much water do youneed? The standard has beeneight, 8-ounce glasses each

day, but your needs will varybased on body weight andlevel of activity.

ThreeConnect, and reconnect.

Dr. Siegfried advises us to“enjoy spending time andreconnecting with friendsand family. Get outside, goto a park. Boulder has greatoutside places to visit.” Finda special moment to relax, contemplate and slow downthe pace a bit.

FourProtect yourself from the sun.

Wear protective gear, including hats with broadbrims and sunglasses (lookfor “UV 400” or “100-percent UV protection” onthe label to ensure the

protection you need). Applysunscreen on exposed skin.“At our high altitudes, youneed to remember to apply, then reapply the sunscreen asneeded to be sure it’sproviding adequateprotection,” Dr. Siegfriedsays. “This applies towaterproof sports screensas well.”

FiveEat four to five servingsof healthy fruits andvegetables every day.

“Summer is the best timeto enjoy fruit and vegetables, when you have the biggestassortment and it’s all fresh. Then make it a year-roundhabit for your family.”

Jiggly arms, thick thighs, adroopingderriere – weall have ourless-than-favoritebody parts, thestubborn onesthat don’trespond toeven our mostearnest diet andexercise efforts.

For me, it’s the belly I wasleft with after two C-sections.I wouldn’t trade my kids foranything in the world. Butthe little smile of saggy skinabove the scar on myabdomen? I would be onlytoo happy to say goodbye tothat particular badge ofmotherhood.

So it was with someinterest that I looked intoSmartLipo, also known aslaser lipolysis, a bodysculpting procedure that hasshown consistent results incases like mine.

“It’s not meant for weightreduction, for those who are50 or more poundsoverweight,” advises SteveZakany, M.D., of AestheticSolutions (2770 Dagny Way,#109, Lafayette,303.666.1199,www.aestheticsolutionsinc.com).

“SmartLipo is ideal forhealthy individuals withtrouble areas. A lot of peoplehave that type of problem, where they are happy withtheir body except for one ortwo specific areas.”

Plenty of people in ourcommunity must have thattype of problem; Zakanyestimates that he performsone or two SmartLipoprocedures every week.

The procedureSmartLipo works by using

a calibrated laser to liquefyfat deposits through the toplayers of a patient’s skin. Atiny laser fiber in a metalsheath is inserted to destroythe fat cells and turn theminto liquid, which is thenremoved through a suctiondevice inserted through smallincisions in the skin. Thelaser can also seal off bloodvessels – resulting in lessswelling, bleeding andbruising than with traditionalliposuction – and tighten

skin through collagenremodeling.

Zakany says a typicalSmartLipo procedure in hisoffice requires two to fiveincisions, each less than aquarter inch long. The laserhas two differentwavelengths: one for skintightening and one forliquefying fat.

“We concentrate firstunder the skin to tighten it,”he explains. “Then we godeeper and melt the fat. Andthen we go in with aspirationequipment.”

The advantagesover traditionalliposuction

No general anesthesia.Only an oral sedative andlocal anesthetic are used forSmartLipo, meaning fewerpostoperative complicationsand faster recovery times.

Minimally invasive. TheSmartLipo laser is minuscule,as are the incisions made

during the procedure.Skin tightening.

Traditional liposuctionpatients often end up withflaps of loose skin where fathas been removed. Manythen require subsequent skinlifts, which costs moremoney and results in greatercomplications. TheSmartLipo fat meltingprocess also causes tissuecoagulation to help tightenand tone around thetreatment area.

“Over the past couple ofyears, [laser manufacturershave] been upgrading thepower and wavelengths to getskin tightening,” saysZakany. “It’s the biggestadvantage of SmartLipo overregular liposuction.”

Safeguard technology. The SmartLipo laser featuresThermaGuide, atemperature-gaugingapparatus inside the metalsheath. Laser energy isdelivered until the targettemperature is reached for asafer and more uniformtreatment.

“It senses the temperatureunder the skin to make surewe don’t heat the tissue toomuch, which can causescarring,” asserts Zakany, who cites safety as the No. 1reason he uses theSmartLipo laser.

Permanent results.Everyone is born with a setnumber of fat cells. Once thelaser destroys these cells, theyare gone forevermore. So long, love handles.

The disadvantagesComplication risk.

SmartLipo is a minimally

invasive, FDA-approvedprocedure, but no surgery iswithout risks.

Fat redistribution. Asmentioned above, SmartLipopermanently destroys fat cellsin the treatment area. If apatient gains weight after theprocedure, however, fat cellsstored in other parts of thebody will get larger.

“So the weight won’t goback to your thighs, forexample, but you might havesaggy arms instead,” explainsZakany. “I always warnpeople about that.”

The recoverySmartLipo incisions are

left open to drain the fluidused during the procedure.Patients can expect drainagefor the first day or two, after

which the small incisions willheal and then virtuallydisappear after three months. The body will absorb the restof the fluid within a month.

Over-the-counter painmedication and compressiongarments are recommendedfor up to 10 dayspostoperatively. And thoughsome hardy souls head backto work immediatelyfollowing their SmartLiposession, a little rest isstrongly suggested.

“I usually tell people toplan to just mope around thehouse for the next couple ofdays,” says Zakany with asmile. “It’s going to limitwhat you do a little bit, butit just feels like you’ve done areally hard workout ... asopposed to traditionalliposuction, which makesyou feel like you’ve been hitby a truck. Most people areback to full activity within acouple of weeks.

“The results are very

good. Most people are veryhappy,” he adds. “These arepeople who have struggledwith these areas for yearsand years.”

The first stepStep one in any surgical

procedure, cosmetic orotherwise, is to do theresearch and review the costs, risks and benefits. The nextstep is to schedule aconsultation with anexperienced, certified surgeonto discuss the procedure andyour expectations.

As for my post-babybelly, I’ve decided to give mykickboxing instructoranother shot at sculpting myabs before I visit thesurgeon. It’s nice to haveoptions though.

“SmartLipo is ideal for healthyindividuals with trouble areas. A lotof people have that type of problem, where they are happy with their bodyexcept for one or two specific areas.”

R eal FitnessCoaching inBoulder is the

brainchild of Sarah Eley, personal trainer and nutritionexpert extraordinaire. “If yourgoal is to lose weight and stayhealthy and fit, we offer you areal solution,” Eley says. “Youwill get results with us.”

Real Fitness Coachingfocuses on its members’ long-term goals. Eley and her staff oftrainers work individually withclients as part of a small groupto create a healthy lifestyle. Theprogram includes life coaching, fitness and nutrition.

Eley received a nutritiondegree from University ofVermont in Burlington andbecame a certified personaltrainer. She moved to Boulderin 2005. “I picked Boulderbecause it was like Burlington –a college town with outdooractivities. They’re similar, butBoulder has better weather andmore going on.”

Her Real Fitness Coachingmembers train in a studiolocated inside HealthStylesExercise Equipment Store,2434 Arapahoe Ave., betweenJoann Crafts and the BoulderBikeSmith, in the ArapahoeVillage Center. Both men andwomen train out of this semi-private studio, which isequipped with a shower andchanging rooms. Eley islooking for her own space andhopes to move in by latesummer.

A few years ago, Eley gainedsome strategic advice at aconference in California: traintwo or three people at a time. The benefits were enticing: eachclient would be on his or herown customized program, andthey would get to work outwith one another and not haveto do it alone. “I was able tobring the price down for peoplein these hard times,” says Eley.

“And it’s better, because withother people there, each studentgets better results.”

So this approach becameher business model. “It’s moreof a community feel,” saysEley. And that is her specialtrademark and one way shediffers from other personaltrainers. “The reason I’m inthis business is that sense ofcommunity and giving peoplesupport and encouragement. Inone-on-one training, clientsjust deal with the trainer; it’s asmall world. The way I do it isto connect them with othermembers. People interact andmotivate one another. A lotgets shared.”

Real Fitness Coaching alsooffers its members free groupclasses, a circuit workout for45 minutes.

Nutrition andBusiness Expertise

Eley gives free nutritiontalks for her members. Three orfour times a year she runs aneight-week nutrition class everyTuesday morning, starting againin September. It’s about eatingright, taking care of oneself, andemotional readiness for change– important factors in long-term success.

She also offers free talks in thecommunity on various topics –like a recent one to WomenEntrepreneurs on how to get yourbusiness and body in summershape. “I love talking aboutbusiness and goal setting; it helpsyou to stay the course. Anothertopic is ‘The Power of Why.’Why are we in the business we’rein? If you communicate thereasons why to your customers,

you are more effective.”She notes: “I’ve made

community a big thing in mybusiness. I see that many peopleare working in isolation. So Iestablished a community forpeople who want to be healthy, fit, and in shape.”

Eley doesn’t do “trainingsessions,” as most trainers do,but rather offers memberships ofthree months or one year inlength; 98 percent of her clientschoose the one-year. “It’soptimal to be supported for ayear at least. We’re focused onlasting change.”

The “action goal” is amethod Eley employs to helpmotivate her members. “Wecreate an action goal along witha reward. For example, themember commits to exercisingfor at least 30 minutes two timesper week for four weeks, for atotal of eight workouts. Rewardyourself with something like anew book, a cd, a new item ofclothing, or whatever you like;it’s best not to use food as areward. Make a simple chart, track your progress, and whenyou reach your goal, giveyourself the reward! It’s a simpletool, yet it helps all my membersstay motivated and on track.”

A 30-Day TrialMembership

Everyone who is consideringjoining the Real FitnessCoaching club is given theoption of a 30-Days-for-$89trial membership, whichincludes an individualizedprogram design, a FunctionalMovement Screening andevaluation, four semi-privatetraining sessions, and unlimitedgroup classes. It’s a great way totry it out.

“I don’t knowwhat I’d dowithout my

women friends.,” says WendyKerr of Longmont, a member ofBoulder County Powerful You!

Many women feel as Kerrdoes, and that’s the principleguiding Powerful You!, anational organization of womenhelping and empowering womenin all aspects of their businessand personal lives.

The Boulder Countychapter began in August 2007,with Rose Chamberlain ofLongmont as the catalyst. Afriend had introduced her to thenational Powerful You!organization. “When I looked atthe kind of women’s supportand networking it offered, withgratitude a part of it, it matchedwhat I felt other groups lacked,”Chamberlain says. “It’s forbuilding relationships, ratherthan just passing leads. And it’sinclusive rather than exclusive;that is, there can be threeRealtors, for example, ratherthan being limited to just one.”

Kerr attended that firstmeeting of the local group.Certified as a Christian lifecoach, Kerr worked for sevenyears in substance abuseprograms, speaking in schools.Today she calls herself “afreelance volunteer.”

“My business coach suggestedPowerful You! was a great place tomeet other women in business, entrepreneurs. It’s been a learningexperience for me to talk withothers and build relationships, which networking is all about. Itwas my introduction tonetworking,” Kerr says.

“The mission, the vision ofPowerful You! struck a deepchord in me. It’s not just about

business; it’s more about theheart and soul of a person, supporting each other inbusiness and life, and the amazinggratitude that everyone shared. Iloved it just as a woman, meetingother women and makingfriends.” WhenChamberlainstepped down asfacilitator, Kerrbecame co-facilitator and hasjust left that post.

“We’re asmall group; weshare ourstruggles,” Kerrsays. “There are16 members now, usually 10 at ameeting. Some women are goingthrough personal problems orbusiness decisions – otherwomen have suggestions. It’s anopportunity for people to bevulnerable. Since I’ve beenfacilitating, I see a powerfulconnection between the women.Changes can be gradual; I seesmall changes along the way.”

Julie Bosworth has beenco-facilitator with Kerr andcontinues in that role. JudyPfeifer is her new co-facilitator.“I went to the first meeting, too,and joined then,” Bosworthsays. “It was different from anynetworking group. They call itnetworking with a heart.”

A University of Coloradoalumna, Bosworth moved backto Boulder in 1989. She is anindependent broker who helpspeople with long-term careinsurance. She has gotten oneclient and a few referrals fromPowerful You! acquaintances.

“It’s a great venue forbusiness, personal and spiritualgrowth. Some other networkinggroups just exchange businesscards. There are leads groups

that ask you to refer them, though you don’t really knowthem. Here people get to knowme, trust me, and refer me.”

Bosworth itemizes some ofthe benefits of joining: “It’smore than just a traditional

networkingmeeting.Relationships areformed. It’s not justbusiness, personal orindustry-specific,like many otherorganizations. It’s anational network, and you can getyour own profile, oran article, on thePowerful You!national Web site.

There are free telemarketingmeetings, one per month. Younetwork with women all overthe country.”

“I love it,” Bosworth says.“Our group is small. I’d like tobuild it but don’t want it to betoo large. It would be good tohave more women.”

How It WorksThe group meets at the

Boulder Cork once a month fortwo hours, including lunch. There are no requirements to beaccepted for membership. Thecost to join is $125 for anentrepreneur or corporatemember; $65 a year for anonprofit member.Nonmembers may come to alunch meeting and pay $35.

Every month the meetingcovers 30-second member“commercials,” a businessnetworking tip, announcementsof relevant community events, abusiness discussion topic – likedealing with other people, ormarketing. “It’s a problem-solving time, a growth and

success and gratitude share,”Kerr says. “One woman sharesthe great new things that arehappening in her business. It’san eclectic group, with all typesof businesses. We never haveenough time.”

Bosworth says, “Themembers speak in-depth abouttheir business for 20 minutes. Also, we have outside speakerstalk about business, the power ofsocial media, the power ofintention, wellness, etc. At theend of the meeting we eachshare what we’re grateful for.”

A brand-new tool is Mini-Mastermind. For 10 minutesyou can talk about where youneed advice or help in some areaof your life. People contributeideas – and get something fromit themselves.

“What I’ve gotten out ofPowerful You! is friendship andpersonal growth,” saysChamberlain. “I have started myown marketing and networkingbusiness. Powerful You! has a lotof materials to help you withyour business. It’s a greatorganization because itempowers women.”

Powerful You! is active in 14states. Cofounders Sue Urda andKathy Fyler are successfulentrepreneurs with more thanone venture to their credit. Theystarted Powerful You! in 2004 asa way to serve women inbusiness, to contribute to theprofessional, personal andspiritual growth of women, assisting entrepreneurs to realizetheir goals.

F or the 15th year, theBoulder Chamber ishonoring a few

remarkable Boulder Countywomen with its “Women WhoLight The Community” awards. This year a committee of theChamber’s Business Women’sLeadership Group selected fivewinners who have generouslycontributed their time, talent, expertise and leadership to makeBoulder County a better place.

The criteria were rigorous.Nominations addressed suchissues as the business orcommunity need (local, regionalor global), or innovation; howthe nominee addressed the needor problem and took aleadership role, or how aninnovation has improved thequality of life; and how thenominee models the behaviors

and actions “we want to seemore of in our community.”

The 2010 honorees, selectedfrom about 50 nominations, areKathy Beeck and Robin Beeck,L. Hunter Lovins, VirginiaMcConnell, and MartaMoreno.

“Film has the powerto change the world.”

Sisters Kathy and RobinBeeck created the annualBoulder International FilmFestival (BIFF), which hasgrown in six years from anaudience of 5,000 to 16,400.With BIFF, the Beecksencourage and celebrate the artof film by creating a forum forartistic, social and culturalawareness; conduct educationaloutreach programs for studentsand seniors; and provideindependent filmmakers with a

venue to showcase their ideasand further their careers.

The Beecks also foundedThe Community ResourceProgram to provide no-costsupport, resources andmentorship to otherorganizations and individuals,This includes volunteerexchange, use of their facilities, marketing, promotional, programming, and operationalassistance.

Kathy Beeck explains thesisters’ motivation: “Robin is afilmmaker who has won 13awards. We traveled to filmfestivals around the world. Wehave lived in Boulder for 35years and thought it was aperfect place for a film festival.

“We took all the bestelements we saw and broughtthem to the Boulder Festival. The first festival was in February2005; 5,000 people showed up

that first year, so we saw therewas a lot of support for it. It’s areal community festival with somany volunteers, in-kind donorsand individual donors – a lot ofsupporters. We have held itevery year since then overPresidents’ Day weekend. It’s somuch fun.

“Film has the power tochange the world. Robin and Ithink that the power of film toeducate and inspire, tocommunicate, can changepeople’s lives. Our films aren’t inthe Cineplex. We showdocumentaries about great socialissues or just entertaining films. We do a lot of educationaloutreach, too.”

The Beecks started a “call toaction” for people to getinvolved in social change issues. They showed a film on foodwaste – how food that wasthrown away in dumpsters could

be channeled instead to foodbanks. “So a local community-action organization came andspoke to the film audience abouthow to help, how people can getinvolved in the community. Weshowed 10 such films this yearthat brought in localorganizations.”

“Step up and make adifference.”

L. Hunter Lovins ispresident and founder ofNatural Capitalism Solutions, anonprofit that educatesbusinesses, governments andothers about the principles ofenvironmental sustainability.Lovins has consulted forbusinesses and organizationslocally and globally, includingUniversity of Colorado-Boulder,City of Boulder, Royal DutchShell, Walmart, the Pentagon,Environmental ProtectionAgency, and the governments ofJamaica, Australia andAfghanistan. She was co-founder of Rocky MountainInstitute in Snowmass. Co-author of 12 books andhundreds of papers, Lovins wasalso named Time Magazine2000 Hero for the Planet.

She is not only anenvironmentalist, but also asavvy businesswoman who seesthe connection betweensuccessful business outcomesand environmental sustainability.

What motivated her topursue this work? “My parents

believed you should leave theworld a better place. They wereactivists: My mother organizedin the coalfields of West Virginiawith John L. Lewis; my fatherhelped to mentor Martin Kingand Cesar Chavez. I grew upbeing taught to believe that Icould make a difference and thatI had a responsibility to do so. Iworked with Dave Brower, thefirst executive director of theSierra Club, and he was amentor of mine. I wassurrounded by people who said,Step up and make a difference.

“We have a very limitedtime to preserve life on thisplanet. We’re losing every major

ecosystem. Failure will confinemost people to a miserablefuture. There is a solid businesscase for solving ourenvironmental problems. If wedon’t fix the unsustainability,we’ll have financial collapse, too.The worst performingcompanies had no one in chargeof sustainability. The companiesthat take sustainability seriouslyare prospering.

“Quality of life is an issue, too. My friend, the folk singerKate Wolf, said: Find what youreally care about and live a lifethat shows it. People say, Butwhat can I do? One individualcan step up.”

“I see improvementin the world.”

Virginia McConnellfounded Boulder Friends ofUNICEF and has worked formany years with the U.S. Fundfor UNICEF. She raises funds toprovide food, access to cleanwater, safety from the effects ofwar, housing, healthcare, andeducation for the mostvulnerable children of the world.

“I’ve always been interestedin the development of children.I have an M.A. degree in EarlyChildhood Development,” saysthis mother of five children. “Iread about the condition of theworld’s children and do what Ican to help them.”

In her quest to raise moneyfor and awareness of the world’sneediest children, she hasstarted a number of otherprograms as well.

McConnell founded theBoulder County CROP Walk in1986. Over the past 23 yearsthis event has raised $500,000to feed the hungry people of theworld, most of them children.“We keep 1 percent of the fundto use for advocacy. Or you canearmark your contribution toUNICEF all for feeding.”

When Halloween rolledaround, “Trick or Treat wasalready under way; a dentist wasdoing it. We got the collectionboxes out.”

She got the minefieldsprogram to be associated withUNICEF. “We combined forces.I got the Denver groupinvolved. We did a lot to raisefunds: a karate marathon, dinnerparties where guests had toexperience a simulatedminefield.” She was on the UNboard, representing UNICEF.“We could make a difference.”

McConnell raised funds forthe School-in-a-Box program, kits that can be used forteaching young children evenwhere there are no schoolbuildings. “They can gatherchildren under a tree to learn.”

What does she see asimportant about the work she isdoing? “Have people aware andinterested in the world’s childrenand help them.”

She is optimistic. “I seeimprovement in the world.”

In 1995 the Boulder Chamber’s Business Women’sLeadership Group (BWLG) noticed that all of the local awardsceremonies were honoring only men. It then occurred to themthat there was a very distinctive void when it came torecognizing the women of Boulder County for contributions theyhave made to the community. In the time-honored tradition ofwomen, the BWLG decided that if they wanted something theywould have to do it themselves – thus the Women Who Lightthe Community awards luncheon was created.

Recommendations were sought as to whom they shouldhonor; a group of four very deserving women was settledupon; and the event was launched.

Over the last 15 years, the process has changed onlyslightly with the ebb and flow of time. Somewhere along theway a nomination form was created with specific criteria thatthe nominators must address.

Most nominations are submitted electronically these days, although hand-written notes on lovely stationary are stillsubmitted thanks to the Daily Camera’s publication of thenomination form.

A committee of 12 reviews the nominations, discusses thematerial, and selects four to five incredible women torecognize. There is no elaborate grading system, no hard andfast rules that dictate why one and not the other. For the mostpart, the committee gets together and combs the pile ofsubmissions. Each member gets the opportunity to vote forfour nominees and state why she made these selections. After some time is spent justifying one choice over another, thefinal honorees are settled upon. If there is a fifth candidate thatsimply cannot be eliminated, then five women are honored.

The choice is never easy and the pool from which thesehonorees are chosen is always filled with amazing women whodo incredible things with seemingly endless energy. Youcannot help but to be inspired and to revel in the goodwill andthe joy of being in the presence of greatness.

The Business Women’s Leadership Group is a council of the BoulderChamber that provides the community of businesswomen witheducation, leadership, recognition and business opportunities throughinformative and professional programs. For 2010, the BLWG focus is onabundance – creating it, maintaining it, and enjoying it.

Mirrors aren’t just forchecking your hair as

you run out of the house inthe morning. Whenthoughtfully added to yourroom design, framed mirrorshave the ability to change theoverall look and feel of aroom in ways that other walldécor cannot.

Here are some tips tohelp you take full advantageof the special touch acustom-famed mirror canbring to any room inyour house:

1Be creative. Put aframed mirror in the

kitchen, family room, ormaybe a narrow stairwell toopen it up.

2 Lighten up. Mirrorsbring some light into

dark rooms. Make sure youhang it to reflect inside light– or better yet, maybe alovely view of the trees orgarden outside.

3 Expand your space.Mirrors give a room a

feeling of depth.

4 Group up. Try groupingseveral small mirrors.

Think eclectic here. It’s notimportant to match thesurroundings or the frameswith each other.

5 What’s showing? Hanga framed mirror to reflect

something on the oppositewall. A piece of framed art,

for example, can enhance aliving space and make the artwork twice as hard.

6 Mix and match. Trymixing framed mirrors

on the wall with other décor, such as framed art, tapestries, etc.

7 Or just match. Framinga mirror to match your

furniture gives the room acustom look that can’t befound anywhere else.

8 Hang or not. Set themon easels or lean a large

mirror on the floor againstthe wall or on a mantel. This gives the room a morecasual look.

9 Weight. Mirrors can getvery heavy. Make sure

you discuss with your customframer the correct methodsand products to hang themsafely in your home.(FastFrame offers hangingservices.)

10 Height. If you areusing a mirror for

grooming, make sure it’spositioned on the wall at acomfortable height.

By Lulu Tupper

W e hear plentyaboutrelationships on

the edge. First dates andblushing brides are all the rage.Rage is also quite popular;breaking up may be hard todo, but it’s apparentlyfascinating to watch.

There must be somenoteworthy material in themiddle, that place whereromance runs headlong intothe day-to-day details of life. What happens when we findourselves in the middle ofwedded blah instead of bliss?

I decided to consult withsomeone on the front lines ofrelationship repair: HollyWidmar, a licensed clinicalsocial worker and therapist atFull Circle Counseling(608 Main St., Louisville,303.803.5853).

Speak and listen up“This isn’t rocket science,”

says Widmar with a laugh.“But communication is one ofthe hardest things couples face.”

When you’re the one doingthe communicating, be clearabout what you want. Keep itsimple and direct. Say “I wantto go to the museum today,”instead of asking a leadingquestion (“What do you feellike doing?”) and hoping yourpartner comes up with theright answer.

“It’s hard to get what youwant when you don’t ask,”explains Widmar.

When you’re on thelistening end, focus on reallyhearing what your partner hasto say. Don’t look for impliedmeanings or read into theirtone of voice. Just listen.

Look in the mirrorTo be a good partner, you

have to take care of yourself.“What will make you the

best you?” asks Widmar. “Dothe work to figure out yourown happiness, your ownsources of health. That’s whatwill make you the best part ofa couple.”

Create a shared mapWidmar routinely asks

her clients to identify theirmajor life values based onreligion, health, family …whatever matters most tothem. She encourages couplesto do the same.

“A lot of times, couplesfind themselves in anadversarial position instead ofacting like allies. Creatingvalues together can lend itselfto feeling like a team,” shesays. “Then you can startasking whether your actionsare working towards fulfillingyour values. When they’re not, that’s when unhappiness startsto seep in.”

Make the timeSo often we get into our

daily routine, and the nextthing we know a weekhas flown bywithout ameaningfulconversationwith oursignificantother.Widmarrecommendssettingaside astructuredtime toconnect, whether it’sa date night or achat on the sofa.

Explore new interestsYou’re not the same person

you were a year, month oreven a week ago. Neither isyour partner. Delve into thedetails with a simple: “Whatare you interested in thesedays?” Then consider thequestion yourself.

“You two are each other’ssupport in helping each otherfind new things to do. Trydance lessons. Go for a hike,”advocates Widmar. “It canshake up the scenery.”

Stroll down memory laneAnother great way to

connect is to revisit thebeginning of your relationship. What brought you together? Why were you attracted toeach other? How did youspend your time as a couple?

“It can reignite oldinterests as well as the old wayof communicating,”says Widmar.

Enlist a professionalThere’s nothing like fresh

eyes to bring new perspectiveto the relationship. Workingwith a therapist isn’t anadmission of defeat; it’s aninvestment in your future timetogether, and it can result insignificant short- and long-term rewards.

“If you get a goodcounselor, it can be fun andprovide impetus for change,”asserts Widmar, who suggestsworking with a referral serviceto find a counselor whomatches your style andpersonality. “It doesn’t have tobe weekly. A lot of my clientscome in for occasional tune-ups, just to shift theirperspective a little bit.”

Enjoy the rideYou’ve chosen your partner

to go on the ride of a lifetimewith you for a reason, observesWidmar. It’s important tomake room for fun.

G one are the days ofdivided living spacesin the home. The

kitchen is quickly becoming theheart of every home, whetheryou cook or not.

People tend to congregatewhere the food is, and thekitchen is where you’ll mostoften find your guests whenthey visit.

Is your kitchen warm andinviting? Does it speak to yourpersonal style? Or is it oldand tired?

Any drab or outdatedkitchen can be dramaticallyrevitalized with some excitingupdates.

Your budget and personalpriorities will determine thebest way to add beauty toyour kitchen.

First decide what is mostimportant to you: storage space,“wow” factor, color, or function.

Take a look at the followingideas and make your ownpriority list.

Flooring can be the mostimportant part of a kitchenbecause it can set the roomapart or connect it to the restof the home.

“Wood brings a warm andcozy feeling into kitchen anddining areas,” says SherriHarrison, owner ofFloorCrafters HardwoodFloor Company (1501 LeeHill Road, #1, Boulder,303.449.3084,www.floorcrafters.com). Woodsuch as Brazilian Cherry canoffer a dark, rich look, whileprefinished wood floors can offerstyles like “hand scraped” for amore budget friendly option.Wood is also a softer product, soyour feet will be happier.

Natural stones such asOnyx, Soapstone, Travertine,Marble and Granite are whereMother Nature shows her truecolors. Each slab is unique andbeautiful in drastically differentways. “I let the customer pickthe artwork, then I transform itinto their counters,” says SteveHood, owner of ParagonGranite & Marble (14136Valley Drive, Longmont,970.535.0473,www.paragon-granite.com). Ifyou are looking for a more eco-friendly alternative, productssuch as Ice Stone are madeusing recycled materials likeglass and sea shells.

Cabinetry is the largest partof your kitchen, and generallytakes the most wear and tear. When considering replacingyour cabinetry, first think abouthow you work in the kitchen:Are you left or right handed?Do you have three sets ofchina, or a plethora of potsand pans?

Wellborn Cabinet’skitchen and bath cabinets areproundly crafted in Americaand are know for qualitycraftmanship. You may haveeven seen them in HGTV’sDream Home Giveaway. Thecompany has several lines thatallow you to create your owndream kitchen. Visitwellborn.com for great ideas.

Kalahari from Paragon Granite & MarbleGranite is one of the most durable materials available.

When properly sealed, granite counter tops will maintain abeautiful shiny luster for a lifetime.

Granite can have different finishes. A polished finish onthe stone has a glossy surface that reflects light andemphasizes the color and marking of the material. A honedfinish creates a satin-smooth surface with relatively little lightreflection. There are also a variety of finishes that add textureto the stone such as leathered, antiqued and river washed.
