Wood and the Environment: Facts & Figures
While most people choose wood for its
•Affordability
•Strength
•Design flexibility and
•Beauty
•it's becoming increasingly recognized for its environmental attributes.
Wood and the Environment: Facts & Figures
•Wood is the world's most abundant renewable resource.
•It's recyclable
•Biodegradable
•Sustainable over the long term. and
•It absorbs carbon dioxide and releases clean oxygen.
IN SHORTwood is the ultimate
"green"
building material.
Wood Offers More Product for Less Energy
Simply put, manufacturing wood is energy efficient.
Compare the amount of energy it takes to produce one ton of cement, glass, steel, or aluminum to one ton of wood:
• 5 times more energy for one ton of cement
• 14 times more energy for one ton of glass
• 24 times more energy for one ton of steel
• 126 times more energy for one ton of aluminum
THE MIRACLE TREEKAD BEVU ( Melia dubia)
LOCAL NAMEAssamese – Dingkurlong; Bengali – Ghora-nim, mahanim; Gujarati – Kadu-kajar, ambaro, limbaro, nibara; Hindi –Ghora-nim, mahanim; Kannada – Heb-bevu, karibevan, bevu, betta-bevu; Kadbevu; Malayalam – Malei-vembu, kattu-veppu, malayembu; Marathi – Kuriaput; Oriya – Maha-limbu, batra; Tamil – Malai-vembu; Telugu – Munnatikaraka, munnuthi-karaka; Urdu – Labshi, kala-khajur.Trade Name – Malabar Neem Wood.
GROWTH HABITIt is a fairly large, handsome, deciduous tree, attaining a girth of 1.2-1.5m and a height of about 20m, with a spreading crown and a cylindrical, straight bole of about 9m
• An average tree produces about 14 Cuft of timber in 10/12 yearsPlus almost 20% in lops and tops that can be used for manufacture of paper chipboard and fuel.
1Cuft of KADBEVU Timber sells for Rs.250 @ present rate (Year-2009)
=Rs.3500/- per tree
THE 10/12 YEAR CYCLE
In 1 Hectare of land we can plant 440 trees at a spacing of 15ft x 15 ft (intensive planting)
328 ft
15 ft
1-Hectare1,07,639 ft2
At Rs. 3,500 per tree this would amount to a total return of
Rs.15,40,000 per Hectare in 10/12 years
To a farmer this amounts to a remuneration of approximately Rs.12,800 per month
Additional income can be generated from intercropping
If we plant just along the PERIPHERY we can plant approximately 130 trees in one Hectare (10 Ft spacing)
At Rs. 3500 per tree this would amount to a total return of
Rs.4.55 Lakhs per Hectare in 10/12 years
To a farmer this amounts to a remuneration of approximately Rs. 3,800 per monthin addition to the income generated from cultivation
10 ft
1-Hectare1,07,639 ft2
5 year old trees grown along the border of a farm
The State of Karnataka has 190 Lakhs Hectare of land
Of which
106 Lakh Hectares is cultivated
Of this
if just 5% is dedicated to peripheral plantation
Amounting to 5.3 Lakh hectares of land
This plantation will produce 96 crores Cuft of timber in 10/12 years
Enough timber to sustainably run 500
plywood mill the size of Hunsur plywood works
This would create almost 5 Lakh additional jobs both directly and indirectly in the state
96 crore Cuft timber @Rs.250/Cuft = 24,000 crores to the Farmers in 10/12 years
+ additional income from fire wood from the lops and tops
=2,400 Crores per annum on a sustainable basis
If plywood is manufactured from the above timber there is a minimum 100% value addition
amounting to an industry turnover of 4,800 crores per annum on a sustainable basis
This will generate a minimum of600 crore revenue per annumto the state on a continuous basis
In terms of Revenue of Karnataka
For this Miracle Revolution to Happen• Need research on propagation of good quality saplings to improve the quality and growth of the timber.
•Nurseries need to be set up for distribution of saplings.
•Farmers need to be educated about the benefits of growing Kad Bevu trees along their boundaries
•The government and NGOS should take up this cause seriously on a war footing
•Forest department needs to abolish felling and transportation permit of this timber which at the moment is a great hindrance for the propagation of this species
•Underutilized lands should be given to the industries for development of this plantation for captive use on a sustainable basis.
THIS MODEL IS NOT NEW
• A green revolution has changed the scenario of the state of Haryana, Punjab, Uttaranchal and Uttar Pradesh.
• 500 plus plywood mills are running on a sustainable basis using poplar timber which the government had identified and promoted a few years back.
• Farmers are so happy with the remunerations that many are growing Poplar as an intensive crop in their farm land along with inter cropping.
WHY KAD BEVU ?• In addition to its obvious Economic Benefits discussed
•KAD BEVU has been identified as a fast growing indigenous species.
•This species being a local timber is better suited for industrial use than other exotic / foreign species being presently propagated
• Growing this species can increase the forest cover rapidly which at present is a national priority.
•Large scale availability of plantation timber will save our natural forest and bio diversity which need to be protected.
•This will improve rural Economy
•The seeds of this tree can be used for the extraction of a bio pesticide which is an industry by itself
•The use of this timber as and when available produces a very good quality plywood comparable to international standards
WE HAVE A DREAM
AND
YOU CAN HELP MAKE IT HAPPEN• by promoting the wood based industry
• by removing present hurdles
• by helping farmers grow KAD BEVU plantations
on a large scaleWe have based our calculations in this presentation on a 5% peripheral land use basis you can imagine what will happen if more land is promoted for this plantation
