Dear Parents and Guardians, Welcome to Woodbridge School! This guide has been developed to inform parents and students of some of the policies and procedures of Woodbridge School and the Roseville City School District. The Woodbridge School staff is committed to working as a professional learning community focused on student achievement and collectively responsible for continual improvement in overall student achievement by:

• Maintaining a unified focus on high quality instruction and uniform assessment practices, with on-going reflection on the levels of student achievement.

• Modifying instruction and use of research-based interventions based on student needs determined through use of continuous progress monitoring of student achievement data.

• Motivating students to read every day for at least twenty minutes at their reading level. • Understanding the whole child, which includes social and emotional needs.

Instruction is provided which supports students in mastering the basic skills of math, reading, and language, addressing the California State Standards and new national common core standards. This year, we will be transitioning to the common core standards that encourages reading, speaking and writing in all areas. Our goal is that children will develop a positive self-concept, and learn to care and respect each other and the world in which they live. Children are given opportunities to participate in cultural activities to increase their understanding and appreciation of the arts and cultural diversity. The Woodbridge Staff welcomes all children and works to help your child achieve their academic and personal goals.

Respectfully, Kari Hazen, Principal

REPORTING AN ABSENCE / LEAVING A MESSAGE

When you call 771-1850, a menu will be provided for your selection: PRESS 1 TO REPORT AN ABSENCE Press 2 for school events Press 3 to leave a message (teacher directory press 9) Press 6 for the school office If you would like to leave a message for your child’s teacher, press 3 then the teacher’s

extension and wait for the teacher’s voice, and after the tone, leave your message. You can call 771-1850 - 24 hours a day! The State requires that the school have on file an excuse showing the reason for absences of

students. Excused absences are: medical/dental appointments for the student, death of an immediate

family member or grandparent. IMPORTANT!!!! PLEASE SEND A NOTE WITH YOUR RETURNING STUDENT TO THE OFFICE, GIVING THE REASON FOR THE ABSENCE, INCLUDING THE DATE OF THE ABSENCE, STUDENT’S FULL NAME AND TEACHER OF THE STUDENT OR CALL TO REPORT AN ABSENCE AT 771-1850.

ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE TIMES AND PROCEDURES First through fifth grade students are to arrive after 8:30. There is no supervision on the

playground before 8:30. Transitional Kindergarteners and Kindergarteners must be dropped off and picked up at their

classrooms. TK hours are 8:50-12:10. This is extremely important for safety reasons. Please have your child at school on time. This makes for a great start for your child. If a child arrives late to school, he/she must come to the office to get a late slip. Students will

not be allowed to leave school at any time other than the regular dismissal times unless accompanied by an adult.

If a child must leave school early, someone on the emergency card must sign him/her out in the office. If a child is to be picked up by someone who is not listed on the emergency card, a call will be placed to the parent before allowing the child to leave, unless office has already been notified. If you know you will need a person to pick up your child multiple times before school dismissal and they are NOT on the emergency card, you will need to notify the office and include them on your emergency card IN PERSON. These precautions are taken in light of the many incidents throughout the U.S. involving school children and custody related issues.

The office staff will do its best to relay messages for arrangements made by telephone, after school starts. It is the responsibility of the parent to ensure your child knows their pickup arrangements before they arrive at school.

PROCEDURES FOR SCHOOL VISITORS

The school office is open from 7:30 – 4:00 PM daily. All visitors to school must enter campus through the school office and sign in immediately upon

arrival. (California Penal Code Section 627) 4

Visitor badges are MANDATORY while visiting the school. These precautions are taken to maintain a safe school environment.

PARKING AT WOODBRIDGE

Parking of private vehicles at the red curbs is strictly prohibited. These areas are reserved for

bus loading and unloading. Do not double-park to pick up or drop off students or materials. Please park in designated parking spaces only. Watch for and cooperate with crossing guards; do not block crosswalks Please be a good neighbor and do not park in our neighbors’ driveways or blocking the

neighbors’ driveways.

TARDIES

Students must arrive at school ON TIME. Please check your child’s arrival time and help him/her to be at school at that time. Students who arrive late lose instructional time, disturb the instruction of other students when they enter the room, and also develop the habit of not being on time. This may create problems throughout school and later in life.

IF YOUR CHILD ARRIVES LATE TO SCHOOL FOR ANY REASON, PLEASE COME TO THE SCHOOL OFFICE FOR A TARDY SLIP.

Referrals to the Roseville Police Department’s Truancy Officer and/or the School Attendance Review Board (SARB) will be made for students exhibiting a pattern of habitual tardiness, unexcused absences or excessive absences.

PERFECT/ OUTSTANDING ATTENDANCE AWARDS

We want your child at school—here on time and ready to go. To reward students who are here consistently, perfect/outstanding attendance awards are given. Only those students who are in attendance for the full instructional day are eligible for Perfect Attendance Awards at the end of the year and each trimester (certificates will be distributed each trimester and a special award will be presented by the principal for those who have perfect attendance all year). Students who are absent or tardy, or who leave school early for any reason are not eligible. This includes students who leave early and come back to school to complete the remainder of the school day. Students who participate in the Vacation-Independent Study Program are not eligible for perfect attendance or outstanding attendance awards. Outstanding attendance awards will be given to those students who have one absence, one tardy or need to leave early one time for any reason for an entire trimester. Outstanding Attendance Awards winners will be recognized and receive a certificate at the end of the trimester and end of year. Certificates will be distributed each trimester. For the students who have outstanding attendance all year, a special award will be awarded to them from our principal.

BRUNCH PROGRAM

Woodbridge School has a brunch program each morning at the beginning of the day. All

school children receive this morning snack. (There is no cost to parents)

LUNCH PROGRAM

The School District makes a hot lunch available to students. The lunches are prepared in the Woodbridge kitchen and/or at one of the district’s kitchen facilities.

Because the school office must call in the lunch count by 10:00 a.m. daily, it is important that students order their lunch at the time attendance is taken. If your child will be getting to school after 10:00 please call the office if he/she wants a hot lunch.

The RCSD Food Services department allows students to charge one lunch if lunch money is forgotten. Lunches may be paid for in advance through the school office, the district website or at EZSchoolPay.com. The school cashier will provide students with a notification when they are down to two lunches.

Good eating habits and manners are to be observed at all times. Each time your child has a hot lunch, $3.00 is deducted from his/her lunch balance.

COMPUTERS AND INTERNET USE

All students have access to technology as a part of their education. Use of computers in the classroom, library and computer lab is integrated with reading, writing, math, science and social studies instruction. Internet use, is available to all students at Woodbridge, under supervision. Students may access the Internet only after a signed District Internet Use Agreement is filed with the classroom teacher by the parent or legal guardian.

DRESS CODE

Certain dress apparel is not allowed on campus because of the distractions it causes or because of safety reasons. This includes:

• Spaghetti straps are not allowed. Straps must be two fingers wide or more. • Boys and girls cannot wear sandals without back heel straps, as they can stub their toes on the

black top during recess and PE. • Short shorts also are not allowed; shorts must be longer than the fingers as the arm hangs

downward. • Un-hemmed short pants • No make-up for any students • Inappropriate language or pictures/ drawings are not permitted on any clothing. • The administration reserves the right to address dress code issues which may not specifically be

listed above when they interrupt the learning for all students.

FIELD TRIPS

Field trips enhance and bring to life classroom studies. Prior to a field trip, parents will be informed about all details. All students going on a field trip must have a completed Parent Permission Form prior to departure. Bag lunches for field trips are available from the school kitchen if ordered in advance. Parents who wish to chaperone field trips may do so with the teacher’s permission and must fill out a RCSD School Volunteer Information Form. Field trip chaperones should plan to provide their own transportation to and from the field trip. Other arrangements can me made with the teacher before the field trip day, due to special circumstances and be able to ride the bus, if space is available. Siblings and other guests may not participate in school-sponsored field trips. Please be advised: buses on which children are transported for field trips do not always have safety belts.

6

HOMEWORK

Teachers assign homework regularly to reinforce basic skills through independent practice and to develop sound independent study habits. At some grade levels, homework is assigned nightly; at others a weekly packet is assigned. Nightly reading is expected at all grade levels. Time spent on homework assignments will vary according to the student’s grade level, diligence and organizational skills. If concerns arise regarding homework assignments, or time spent on homework, please contact your student’s teacher. Students are accountable for putting their best effort into all homework assigned. Students may be directed to finish incomplete homework at recess time.

SAFETY AT WOODBRIDGE

Staff and students rehearse safety procedures for preparedness in the event of fire, earthquake and intruder at school. In the case of fire and earthquake, each class has an assigned building evacuation destination on the playground or park. In the case of an intruder, lockdown and shelter-in-place procedures are followed. If it becomes necessary to evacuate the school grounds, students and adults will move to one of two off campus destinations: Placer Fairgrounds, behind the school or Kaseberg Elementary.

SAFE ENTRANCE AND EXIT FROM WOODBRIDGE SCHOOL WALKERS: Caution should be used when crossing streets and the use of crosswalks and signals is

mandatory where available. All students must leave school grounds at time of dismissal. There is no supervision for

students in the playground after school has been dismissed. Students waiting to be picked up MUST wait in the front office.

SAFE ROUTES TO SCHOOL:

• Students South of Main St. Walk north to Main St. - Walk on Main St. to Alta - Walk to Elefa - Cross at stop sign at Elefa and Niles Ave. - Walk to Woodbridge School using the crosswalk at Stanford and Niles Ave.

• Students North of Main St. Walk to Alta - Walk to Elefa - Cross at stop sign at Elefa and Niles. Ave. - Walk to Woodbridge School using the crosswalk at Stanford and Niles Ave.

• Students East of Washington Blvd. Walk to Washington Blvd. - Walk to Pleasant St. - Cross Washington Blvd. - Walk to Alta - Walk to Elefa - Cross at stop sign at Elefa and Niles Ave. - Walk to Woodbridge School using the crosswalk at Stanford and Niles Ave.

BUS RIDERS: Bus riders will be dropped off and picked up by the buses from the loading zone near room 16

on Stanford Ave. They will enter the school on the playground and leave from the lines near the bus area. There should be no playing, roughhousing, loud noise, entering the street, or interference with

private property while waiting for or getting off the bus.

CAR RIDERS: Children are to be dropped off and picked up on All American City Blvd. Children are NOT to be dropped off or picked up on the Stanford side of the school, or at any

other area. All students who are being picked up will be sent by his/her teacher to the pick up area near

the Multi-Purpose Room. Children will wait in the fenced area. When a child sees the parent’s vehicle, he/she will let the teacher know. The teacher will then

dismiss the child if the vehicle is in the proper area. No children will be dismissed to a double-parked car. Children will not be dismissed if the parent’s car is across the street. Parents are welcome to park on the North side of All American City Blvd. and walk across the

street to pick up a child. Please use the crosswalk! A parent modeling how to cross a street safely will help a child remember to use a crosswalk when an adult is not present.

When picking up a child, please pull into the pick-up zone on All American City Blvd. (the school side of the street). DO NOT LEAVE YOUR CAR.

As children are released to cars, please be prepared to move forward. We will release children to the group of cars closest to the exit gate. Your cooperation is needed to help make the exit procedure safe for everyone.

Typically all children are dismissed to parents within 5 to 7 minutes. Anyone double-parking or attempting to pick up a child in other than the set procedure will only slow down the process.

The Roseville police will ticket cars parked illegally or left unattended in the pick-up/drop-off zone.

Parents are always welcome to park in open parking areas and come into the school to pick up a child at the classroom door.

BICYCLE RIDERS: Students riding bicycles are reminded that the rules and regulations of the California Vehicle

Code governing bicycle use must be followed. Bicycle helmets are required. For safety, bicycles must be walked at all times on the school campus and in the school

parking lots. Bicycles should be locked securely to the bike racks in the courtyard while students and

visitors are on campus. TRANSITIONAL KINDERGARTEN AND KINDERGARTEN: Transitional Kindergarteners and Kindergarten students must be picked up at the classroom

door. Please park in an appropriate parking area (not in the drop off or pick up zone) and wait at the

classroom door. The teacher will dismiss students one by one directly to the parent. Due to the age of the transitional kindergarteners and kindergarten students, they will not be

dismissed to other children and will not be dismissed from the car pick up area. Our goal is a safe school, including the times when students are entering and exiting the school. We ask for your assistance in reaching this goal.

WOODBRIDGE SCHOOL RULES AND PROCEDURES

All persons at Woodbridge School will strive to maintain a helpful attitude toward others. Woodbridge’s school culture is based around a Positive Behavior System. All employees are made

8

aware of these rules at the beginning of each school year and are asked to enforce them consistently. Each teacher posts individual classroom rules in the classroom. While at school ALL students are expected to follow our three school rules: Be safe, respectful and responsible. Woodbridge school expectations are as follows: Personal property brought to school by a student is entirely the responsibility of that student.

School personnel will not be involved in replacement of missing property. Pocket knives and other sharp instruments, slingshots, and water pistols are not to be brought

to school. Pencils are to remain in the classroom. Speak positively. No profanity.. Walk in the halls. Any person who willfully damages or destroys any school property will be required to pay for

repair or replacement. Students are not to leave money or valuables in their cubbies. During lunch period the students will conduct themselves in the proper manner. They will talk

quietly and remain in their seats until they finish their lunch, at which time they will clean up their area and go quietly out to play.

PLEASE, NO canned or bottled drinks at school. Fighting is not permitted, either in fun or in anger, on the grounds or during the passing to and

from school or bus stops. Students and parents are responsible for all textbooks, library books, and other materials

loaned to students. Lost or damaged books must be paid for. Toys are not to be brought to school. Party invitations are NOT be handed out in class UNLESS EVERYONE in class is being

invited. If not, invitations must be handed out outside of the classroom after school hours. You may also contact your child’s teacher for class list information and or e-mail address to send out party invitations.

Please, do not send floral arrangements or balloons to students. It is very disruptive to instructional time.

Sun protective clothing such as hats are allowed for outdoor use. Specific clothing and hats determined by the school district or school site to be “gang-related” or “inappropriate” apparel are prohibited.

PLAYGROUND RULES • Stay on the school playground at all times. • Listen to the directions of ALL school personnel. • Students are not to play tag on equipment. • Pushing is not allowed. • Appropriate footwear shall be worn at all times. We encourage students to wear socks with

sandals and to refrain from wearing flip-flops. • Tennis shoes are requested to be worn on P.E. days. • No hard balls or bats may be used. • No bike riding on school grounds. • Use of scooters, skates, skateboards and roller blades is forbidden on school grounds

within the City of Roseville per Roseville City Municipal Code Section 11, 18.040. • Additional rules will be discussed with students as new equipment is added to the play

area. PRESCHOOL STUDENTS: Preschool children who may be accompanying parents to pick up students are not allowed on any playground equipment during school hours. The playground is available for all children after the close of school at 3:30. This is a very important safety

precaution and we ask that all parents, who may be waiting for dismissal of students, observe this rule.

(ASES) STUDENTS – AFTERSCHOOL PROGRAM

The ASES program is a privilege for students at this school. The program fills up fast and usually has a wait list all year long. Participation in ASES is contingent on good behavior. If your child is having behavior problems at ASES they could be dismissed from the program.

LOST AND FOUND

Please make sure that all clothing, playground balls, lunch boxes and other items brought to school are clearly marked with your child’s name. We accumulate a vast assortment of misplaced property during the school year. The Lost and Found is located in and behind the rear, west door to the multi-use room. You are welcome to check it during school hours. All abandoned items in the Lost and Found are donated to charitable organizations at various times during the school year.

POSITIVE BEHAVIOR SYSTEM (PBIS):

Our goal is to reward students for positive behavior throughout the school year. By focusing on the positive rather than the negative, students feel more confident at school. Students receive positive Woodbridge reward tickets that are entered in a weekly, and monthly drawing for positive rewards. Our three school rules are: Be safe, Be respectful and Be responsible. The table below explains what this looks like. When students break a school rule, they receive a warning and a referral. A sample of the referral is in this handbook. Your child’s teacher and the principal are available to answer questions you may have regarding PBIS.
