Woodcock-Johnson-III Battery Compuscore Using the WJ-3 Compuscore Software 1. You must install the Compuscore program from the CD in the WJ-3 test kit before you can

use it – the software will not run from the CD. You can install the software on your home computer or laptop by following the directions on the screen.

• Mac users: The WJ-3 software will only work with OS 10.1 – 10.6.x. If you are running OS 10.7 or higher, you must download and install the update for those systems at Riverside publishing: http://www.riverpub.com/products/compuscore/download/index.html

• Windows users: Once you have installed the software, go to the Start menu [bottom left of screen], then look under All Programs and depending on whether you changed the folder name when installing, look under Riverside Publishing for the actual WJ-3 Compuscore and Profiles application to launch it.

o Two ED 111 computers have the WJ-3 Compuscore software installed. Look for the sign on the wall with the wiindows for those two computers. To access Compuscore go to: Start / All Programs / Computer Lab Programs / Courses / Education – there may be a shortcut on the desktop for Compuscore.

2. Launch/Start the WJ-3 Compuscore program from the hard drive. You will be asked to create or open an existing WJ-3 database (e.g., the database name will end with .wnu -- WJ3dbase.wnu). If it shows you a database or a list of databases, select a database (and remember it) and continue. If Compuscore automatically takes you to step #3, then just continue.

3. A window like the one below appears when Compuscore is up and running. You will want to create a New subject record for your student by clicking on the New tab as shown below in the red box. At another time you might want to edit an existing record so you’d click the Edit tab and select the student record you want to edit.

4. Enter all identifying information regarding the student. For WOU course purposes, be sure

to maintain the anonymity of the subject – perhaps use your last name for the subject’s and

2

then her/his initials as the first name. That makes it easier to select the subject if you need to edit or complete entering the scores, print reports, etc.

5. Look at the bottom of the WJ-3 Compuscore window for instructions about what information or format needs to be used to enter data/information. When you are done entering identifying information, be sure to click the Save button.

6. To enter raw scores/data for either the Achievement and/or Cognitive battery(ies) or to enter

Observation data for either battery, you need to select the WJ-3 test battery for which you want to enter data [see below].

• If you are entering data for the WJ-3 Achievement battery, use the pull-down Add Test Record button and select and click on Woodcock-Johnson III Tests of Achievement – Form A (or B if you are using Form B) as shown below.

3

• If you are entering data for the WJ-3 Cognitive battery, use the pull-down Add Test Record button and select and click on Woodcock-Johnson III Tests of Cognitive Ability as shown below.

7. For both the Cognitive and Achievement batteries, you begin data entry by clicking on the Identifying Information tab [in green rectangle below] and filling in the necessary information like the examiner, date of testing, etc. When you are finished entering this data, be sure to click the Save icon [the blue diskette in blue circle below; or use the top menu bar and select the Test Record pull-down menu and choose Save Test Record; or on Mac computers, press the Command (z) + S keys; or on Windows computers, press the Windows + S keys … if that doesn’t work, press the Control + S keys … and if that doesn’t work, press the Alt + S keys.

8. For both the Cognitive and Achievement batteries, there are Standard and Extended subtests. To enter the subtest raw scores for the Standard battery for the Achievement tests, you click on the Standard tab [in the red rectangle below]; to enter the subtest raw scores for the Extended battery, you click on the Extended tab [in blue oval below].

9. Enter the correct raw score for each subtest (triple check your scoring!).

4

• Remember: look at the bottom of the WJ-3 Compuscore window for instructions about what information or format needs to be used to enter data/information. For certain subtests, Compuscore will not let you enter a score that is too high or too low, so if you keep getting an error message, check your scoring as you have made an error. … When you are done entering data, be sure to click the Save button [or on a Mac computer: press Command (z) + S keys].

10. To enter behavioral observations data, click on the Test Session Observations tab [in orange rectangle in above graphic] and enter the number (1 – 4) that best describes the subject’s test behavior for each of the 7 observation categories specified on the front page of the Examiner booklet.

• Be sure to answer the bottom two questions on the Examiner booklet about the validity of the test and if any modifications to standardized procedures were used (affects reliability of test results).

• When you are done entering data, be sure to click the Save icon.

11. Once you have entered all raw scores and behavioral observations, be sure to click the Save icon [the blue diskette in blue circle noted previously; or use the top menu bar and select the Test Record pull-down menu and choose Save Test Record; or on Mac computers, press the Command (z) + S keys; or on Windows computers, press the Windows + S keys … and if that doesn’t work, press the Control + S keys … and if that doesn’t work, press the Alt + S keys.

12. Once you’ve completed the steps above and have all data entered, you’re ready to print your WJ-3 reports.

Printing Reports Using WJ-3 Compuscore 13. Once you’ve saved your subject’s data, you need to get back to the Subject Information

window for WJ-3 Compuscore. To do so, you click on the left green arrow [in the lavender oval below] or use your mouse to go to the Compuscore top menu bar and use the Test Record pull-down menu and select Save and Return to Subject Menu (Mac: z + B keys;

14. When you get back to the Subject Information screen, you should see the following:

5

15. So that the WJ-3 Compuscore program knows more about how you want your scores

analyzed, go the Compuscore top menu, use the Reports pull-down menu and select Report Options [see above]. • The Report Options window that appears will let you select:

o the discrepancy cut-off – usually 1.5 standard deviations is the norm. o the confidence band to determine the range of standard scores within which the

subject’s true score is likely to be. Generally, a 68 % or 90 % confidence band is selected to determine the standard score range.

o what other derived scores you want printed on the report (i.e., age equivalent/grade equivalents [AE/GE], T-scores, Normal Curve Equivalents [NCE], z-scores, stanines, CALP [Cognitive Academic Language Proficiency]). While one needs to be very careful in the use of AE/GE scores, most teachers/parents want to see these, so it may be appropriate to include the AE/GE column on the report.

When you are done selecting your options, click the OK button and you’ll be taken back to the Student Information page.

16. To print the WJ-3 Compuscore reports, once again, go the Compuscore top menu, use the Reports pull-down menu and select Summary and Score Report [see below].

6

• The Summary and Score Report window that appears will let you select:

o age norms are preferred, so select Age in the Normative Basis for report, and then click the Next button

o in the next window that appears [see graphic below], § if you have only Achievement test scores entered in Compuscore for your

report, put a check beside Total Achievement Cluster § if you have only Cognitive test scores entered in Compuscore for your report,

put a check beside GIA/BIA [General Intellectural Ability/Brief Intellectual Ability]

§ if you have both Cognitive and Achievement test scores entered in Compuscore for your report, put a check beside both GIA/BIA and Total Achievement Cluster, and then click the Next button

o for the next window that appears, the Intra-Ability Variations, I recommend

checking None, and then click the Next button o for the next window that appears, the Select Discrepancy Procedures, I

recommend the following: § if you have only Achievement test scores entered in Compuscore for your

report, put a check beside Predicted Achievement/Achievement [see lavender oval in graphic below]

§ if you have only Cognitive test scores entered in Compuscore for your report, put a check beside GIA/(std)/Cognitive Clusters and check Choose for me [see orange oval in graphic below]; note: only experienced assessors should select the cognitive cluster(s) they want to use for the discrepancy procedures

7

§ if you have both Cognitive and Achievement test scores entered in Compuscore for your report, put a check beside both Intellectual Ability/Achievement and check GIA-Standard [see lavender oval in graphic below]

§ then click the Next button

o for the next window that appears, I recommend the following:

§ for Base summary narrative on, choose Standard Scores § for Select the summary report language, choose English § then click the Next button

o your subject’s Summary and Score Report window will appear as below: § if you want to preview the entire report, click Preview § if you want to send the report to a text file, click Send to File and you will be

prompted for a File Name, then where you want to save the report file (sometimes a folder on the desktop makes it easy to access the report), and whether you want the report in Plain Text or Rich Text Format (RTF) – probably your best choice is RTF as it preserves the formatting of the report generated by Compuscore; then click Save and the report will be saved, you will get a dialog box that says the report was saved and you click the OK button

§ if you want to send the report to a wordprocessor like MS Word, click Send to Word Processor and the report will be saved to a plain text file (~SumScoreRptWP.txt) and it will probably be saved in the same folder on your hard drive as the Compuscore database you are using (e.g., WJ3dbase.wnu)

o After you complete the above steps, you will be back at the Summary and Score Report window, so click the button Return to Subject Information in the bottom right of the window

17. Go again the Compuscore top menu, use the Reports pull-down menu and select Age/Grade Profiles [as shown in graphic below].

8

• The Age/Grade Profiles window that appears will let you select:

• age norms are preferred, so select Age in the Normative Basis for report, and then click the Next button

• in the next window that appears, • if you have only Achievement test scores entered in Compuscore for your report,

put a check beside Total Achievement Cluster • if you have only Cognitive test scores entered in Compuscore for your report, put

a check beside GIA/BIA Scores [General Intellectural Ability/Brief Intellectual Ability]

• if you have both Cognitive and Achievement test scores entered in Compuscore for your report, put a check beside both GIA/BIA and Total Achievement Cluster, and then click the Next button

• The Age/Grade Profiles report window that appears will let you select: o if you want to preview the entire report, click Preview o if you want to print the report, click Print and you should be able to print the report to

your printer or to a PDF file (see below about installing PDF software for Windows that will allow you to print your reports to PDF files)

o if you choose to save the report to a PDF file, you will be prompted for a File Name, then where you want to save the report file (sometimes a folder on the desktop makes it easy to access the report)

• After you complete the above steps, you will be back at the Age/Grade Profiles window, so click the button Return to Subject Information in the bottom right of the window

18. Once again, go the Compuscore top menu, use the Reports pull-down menu and select Standard Score/Percentile Rank Profiles.

9

• The Standard Score/Percentile Rank Profiles window that appears will let you select: • age norms are preferred, so select Age in the Normative Basis for report, and then

click the Next button • in the next window that appears,

• if you have only Achievement test scores entered in Compuscore for your report, put a check beside Total Achievement Cluster

• if you have only Cognitive test scores entered in Compuscore for your report, put a check beside GIA/BIA Scores [General Intellectural Ability/Brief Intellectual Ability]

• if you have both Cognitive and Achievement test scores entered in Compuscore for your report, put a check beside both GIA/BIA and Total Achievement Cluster, and then click the Next button

• The Standard Score/Percentile Rank Profiles report window that appears will let you select: o if you want to preview the entire report, click Preview o if you want to print the report, click Print and you should be able to print the report to

your printer or to a PDF file; § see below about installing PDF software for Windows that will allow you to print

your reports to PDF files; § Mac users can save the report to a PDF buy using the PDF pull-down menu in the

lower left corner of the print dialog box that appears when you click the Print button, as below

o if you choose to save the report to a PDF file, you will be prompted for a File Name,

then where you want to save the report file (sometimes a folder on the desktop makes it easy to access the report)

• After you complete the above steps, you will be back at the Standard Score/Percentile Rank Profilewindow, so click the button Return to Subject Information in the bottom right of the window

19. When you have finished printing the reports noted above, you can exit/quit WJ-3 Compuscore by using the pull-down top menu under WJ III NU File and selecting Quit (Mac) or Exit (Windows).

20. PDF software for Windows

• To allow you to print PDF files from virtually any software program on your Windows computer, download and install one of the following free software programs:

• The ones that appear to work best are the following (assuming you are using Windows 7), so choose one, download & install it and perhaps there won't be a problem again.

• If you have trouble finding the software using a Google or Bing search, go to the URL below at TuCows.Com to download the software:

http://www.tucows.com/downloads?hp=A1

• PDF4Free http://www.pdfpdf.com/pdf4free.html

• CutePDF Writer http://www.cutepdf.com/Products/CutePDF/writer.asp

• PDF Creator http://sourceforge.net/projects/pdfcreator/

• When you have installed it, you might be wise to restart your computer and the PDF writer driver should appear in the top of the "print" window in a pull-down menu when you issue a print command -- you will probably see your regular printer listed first but if you use the pull-down arrows/menu, you should get the option to choose a PDF writer driver as your printer.

• After you do that, you will then be prompted as to where you want to save the PDF file and what you want to name the file.
