“Which subject combination should I take?”

Why is the choice of subjects important?

In choosing subject combination…

Who am I?

Where am I

going?

How do I get

there?

Presenter
Presentation Notes
To help your child/ward select his subject combination, the first step is to understand where his interests and strengths lie. If your child/ward choose a subject he is interested or where his strengths lie, he will enjoy learning the subject and will be motivated to study and explore the subject further. The likelihood of scoring good results will therefore be high. This will increase his chance of getting into the educational pathway he wants after secondary school. Next, your child/ward should also choose subjects that will support what he wants to do after secondary school as most careers or post secondary courses have specific subject requirements. So, “How do I get there?”, is to start thinking what are his interests and strengths.

when guiding your child to choose their subject combination

The Do’s

Begin with the end in

mind

Scan course entry

requirements

Choose subjects based on his

strengths and interests

Presenter
Presentation Notes
In journeying with your child in education and career guidance in any milestone stage of their life, such as choosing the subject combination, it is a good practice to first begin with the end in mind - what are your child’s passion, interests and strengths. Next, based on his passion, interests and strengths, get your child/ward to think about his career aspirations and/or the possible courses that he may want to pursue. Get him to research on the course entry requirements because most post-secondary courses have specific entry requirements. Thus, choosing the right subject combination is important as it will affect your child/ward in pursuing his passion. Lastly, always direct your child/ward to choose the subjects he most enjoy and will most likely do well.

In choosing subjects, understand that…

• Many careers or qualifications have special requirements

• Choosing the right subjects prepares one for post-secondary courses

Not to choose a subject combination because

it sounds prestigious

many perceive that it will lead to good prospects

a friend, teacher or relative recommends it

The Dont’s

Presenter
Presentation Notes
You should remind your child/ward that he should not choose a subject combination or a subject based on the 3 above reasons. Explain to your child/ward that he will lose his motivation to study if he selects a subject or subject combination which is not aligned to his strengths or interests.
