A Street Named For A Good Woman(continued from front page)

by Luke Adams

Last Saturday morning, at the corner of45th Street and 48th Avenue, approximately80 people, including relatives, neighbor-hood friends and public officials, gatheredto remember Claire Kraft for her years ofdevotion to the community she loved andserved. Claire had lived at 48-20 45th Streetin Woodside until her death in 2002, and herformer home is in sight of the new streetsign. Thanks to the excellent efforts of ourCouncilman Jimmy Van Bramer, “ClaireKraft Way” now permanently marks thespot to honor this lovely lady.

Claire moved to Woodside in the early1920’s while she was a little girl. Claire’shome was close to McGucken’s Milk Farmand the family bought fresh milk there everyday. The area had acres of open farmlandand undeveloped fields, but the twentieswere the beginning of great urban growth,

due to the advent of the bridge, the develop-ment of Long Island, and the spreading ofpopulation from Manhattan.

It was also the beginning of life for St.Teresa’s Parish around which much ofClaire’s life was devoted, in addition to hermany other passions. In 1925, the Diocese ofBrooklyn bought land and soon began con-struction of a school and rectory, opening aschool in 1927. On Easter Sunday 1927,Reverend John Patterson, pastor of St.Raphael Church, celebrated the first Mass inthe school basement, which served as thenew church. Claire worshiped in and servedSt. Teresa’s until her death. She helped buildand make our community strong through herwork. She was on St. Teresa’s Parish Coun-cil and Rosary Society. In the early 1950’s,she met this author, Luke Adams (to whomher son John refers to as his fourth brother),when she volunteered and worked with Gate-way Community Restoration. That group

was responsible to helping create theSunnyside Arch. The arch was the begin-ning of neighborhood vitalization and re-mains the area’s most prominent land-mark.

Kraft served asPresident of theWoodside Republi-can Club, and wason the board of theSunnyside Cham- ber of Commerce. Shewas a proud member of the 108 PolicePrecinct Community Council, United For-ties Civic Organization, and many morelocal groups which held the communitytogether, welcomed newcomers and workedfor the public good.

Councilmember Van Bramer acted asMaster of Ceremonies at the June 4 renam-ing, and introduced the former pastor of StTeresa’s, Claire’s good friend Msgr. D. Jo-seph Finnerty. Those who knew Claire wellwere aware of how close she was with thePastor. Monsignor mentioned that when hefirst came to St. Teresa’s, Claire was one ofthe first people he met, and joked how she lethim know what he was expected to do!

Former Councilman Walter McCaffreyalso spoke of his ties with Claire. He re-called that his father was also close to herdue her both their positions on the pollingboard. They were on opposite sides of the

aisle but remained cordial andenjoyed each other’s company.

Her sons Roger and Johnattended the dedication withtheir family, and her third son,Lawrence who lives in FortWorth, Texas, was unable to attend. It wouldbe difficult to mention all who came to-gether to honor Claire, but her son Johnasked that we acknowledge Claire’s goodfriend, the late former Republican StateCommitteewoman Lee Corcoran, and herfriend Roel Vanderkooi for all the week-ends he drove Claire to visit Lee when shewas hospitalized.

Many of us are grateful and thankful thatthe street naming was made to one of ourcitizens who wasn’t a big politician or richmember of the community but a great ladywho rolled up her sleeves and volunteeredfor the community she loved. She made it abetter place for all of us till this day.

CM Jimmy Van Bramer, two of Kraft’s sons (and very close friend) Roger Kraft,Assemblywoman Catherine Nolan, John Kraft, Luke Adams and Lily Gavin.

Msgr. Finnerty was pleased that God had the sun come out to honor Claire’s day. Hethanked the Councilman for honoring a woman who worked so hard for her community.

Assemblywoman Nolan talked of her 30-year friendship with Claire, and althoughpolitically different they had a strong friendship and enjoyed each others company. L-R:CB2 Chairman Joe Conley, Walter McCaffrey, Van Bramer, Roger Kraft (Claire’s son),Nolan, John Kraft (Claire’s son), Luke Adams and Lily Gavin.

John Kraft spoke on behalf of the family, on how they tried to get his mother to move closerto them on Long Island, but she made it clear she would not move from her neighborhood.

QUEENS PRIDE PARADE

PET PROPOSALSDid you realize that 6 out of 10 U.S. households have pets? That

means that those without critter companions are in the minority, but ifyou’re a pet owner selling your home, you shouldn’t ignore the percep-tions of those families that don’t include cats or dogs.

Odors are the biggest issue. This isn’t to say that your housekeepingis remiss, but remember that some buyers who visit your home mayexperience allergies or be particularly sensitive to pet dander or odors.Just vacuum the floors and furniture frequently and use an air sanitizer.

During the early stages of your listing, you’ll likely experience morefrequent showings and visits by buyers. This is a particularly good timeto make arrangements to board your pet, or seek out a good “doggie daycare” center for quick visits during showings. This may be safer and lessstressful for your pet than a constant parade of strangers in your home, and may put buyers more at ease as well.

In any case, be sure to pick up toys, bowls, bedding in advance of ashowing, just as you would tidy up the children’s things and other roomsthroughout the house before buyers visit.

The World Around I.S. 125Starbucks of Sunnyside and the students of Ms. Clarisse Frenkel’s art
