Principal: Cathy Santelle Woodview School News 340 Alleghany Road, Grayslake, IL 60030 847-223-3668 “An Environment Where We Can All Grow Together” February 8, 2013 Dear Woodview Parents and Guardians, Sincerely, Cathy Santelle Principal Woodview School We are looking forward to conferences next week on February 11-14th with the focus being on student involvement. It is our goal to get 100% of the Woodview parents attending conferences. If you have not already made a conference time with your child’s teacher, please do so immediately. Make sure to stop by our Scholastic Book Fair in the Multipurpose Room where you will find great books for the whole family. A special thank you to all volunteers and performers for a successful Spaghetti Dinner/Lip Sync show last Friday night. It was an exciting evening where the students, parents, and teachers all came together to show off their talents and raise money for our school. We appreciate the dedication of our PTO and the numerous families that donated their time and energy. We work closely with the Grayslake Fire Department to practice fire safety drills and procedures. It is also important that the Fire Fighters are familiar with our school in case of emergencies. Next week we will have the Grayslake Fire Department in our building on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday morning. This will provide an opportunity for all Fire Fighters to become familiar with our building layout, exits and equipment. It will not involve students and we will not disrupt learning in any way. Finally, you will be receiving information about the Illinois 5 Essentials Survey . This is an on-line survey generated and required by the state that will take you 15 minutes to complete. The focus is on the school’s climate and learning environment. I encourage you to take the time and voice your opinion. The only way to grow is to address feedback gathered from our families. The district letter sent home today, will provide more details. We will have computers available to you during conferences. I thank you in advance for your participation.

Dear Woodview Parents and Guardians,

Sincerely,

Cathy Santelle

Principal

Woodview School

We are looking forward to conferences next week on February 11-14th with the focus

being on student involvement. It is our goal to get 100% of the Woodview parents

attending conferences. If you have not already made a conference time with

your child’s teacher, please do so immediately. Make sure to stop by our Scholastic Book

Fair in the Multipurpose Room where you will find great books for the whole family.

A special thank you to all volunteers and performers for a successful Spaghetti

Dinner/Lip Sync show last Friday night. It was an exciting evening where the students,

parents, and teachers all came together to show off their talents and raise money for our

school. We appreciate the dedication of our PTO and the numerous families that donated

their time and energy.

We work closely with the Grayslake Fire Department to practice fire safety drills and

procedures. It is also important that the Fire Fighters are familiar with our school in case

of emergencies. Next week we will have the Grayslake Fire Department in our building

on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday morning. This will provide an opportunity for all

Fire Fighters to become familiar with our building layout, exits and equipment. It will

not involve students and we will not disrupt learning in any way.

Finally, you will be receiving information about the Illinois 5 Essentials Survey. This is

an on-line survey generated and required by the state that will take you 15 minutes to

complete. The focus is on the school’s climate and learning environment. I encourage

you to take the time and voice your opinion. The only way to grow is to address

feedback gathered from our families. The district letter sent home today, will provide

more details. We will have computers available to you during conferences. I thank you

in advance for your participation.

Planning is underway for Exploration Day 2013! It's a day like no other for Woodview students, filled with exploring, learning, discovering and having fun. The students will choose from over 20 hands-on presentations and move about the school experiencing the interactive and interesting topics.

HELP WANTED!

Exploration Day is simply not possible without the help of volunteers. It takes more than 100 volunteers to make this wonderful day the success that it always is. Though we already have many exciting presentations lined up, we are in need of several more. Do you have an interest in something unique? Do you have a hobby or career that you think our students would be interested in learning more about? Or, maybe you are just able to help out and present one of the suggested ideas below. These are suggestions only - if you have a different idea, please let us know – we are open to any new ideas!

Science Experiments Multicultural Arts Arts & Crafts Smoothies/Afterschool Snacks Tumbling Camping Skills Kite Making Jewelry Making Origami Carpentry Magic Technology Exploration Day 2013 is scheduled for Friday, May 10th. The day begins and ends with a special ceremony, and is broken up into five, 40-minute sessions that consist of approximately 15-25 students each. If you would be willing to present at Exploration Day, please return this form to school as soon as possible. We will get in touch with you to assist you with planning. If you are not interested in presenting, but would like to volunteer in other areas on Exploration Day, information about that will be sent out in the next few weeks. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - NAME_____________________________________________________________________________ PHONE/E-MAIL____________________________________________________________________ STUDENT’S NAME/TEACHER_______________________________________________________________

Flu Season and School

To help keep flu outbreaks to a minimum, we are asking that all students and families follow these simple steps:

1. PLEASE keep sick children home from school until they are fever-free for 24 hours without medication, such as

Tylenol or Ibuprofen. (fever = 99.5 degrees or above) and their cough is gone!

2. Teach your children to COVER THEIR COUGHS and wash hands often. Hand sanitizers are also effective.

3. The CDC recommends that all school-age children receive flu vaccinations. Seasonal flu vaccines are available

now!

4. Prepare in advance. Have alternative childcare available if you cannot stay home or pick up your sick child at

school. SICK students cannot remain at school!

5. PLEASE report your child’s absence to school and tell us the symptoms. (Just saying “sick” doesn’t help us track

illnesses)

6. Make sure we have current phone numbers to reach you and your emergency contacts.

The Six Flags Read to Succeed program reading logs are due back to Mrs. Tarnowski by February

14, 2013. Students that turn in their reading log showing six hours of reading will earn one free

ticket to Six Flags Great America. Print out the reading log in the newsletter to track your child's

reading time. Keep Reading!
