On Wednesday this week Awal Maker was
invited to speak to the monthly meeting of
the Woolgoolga Probus Club. The Probus
Club is a thriving social club that is founded
on the aims of friendship, fellowship and fun!
The Club’s representative, Mrs Robyn
Rooth, introduced Awal as a remarkable
young woman who has achieved so much
since her arrival in Australia in 2011 as a
refugee from South Sudan. This included
learning to speak, read and write English,
and navigate a new cultural and social
environment.
Awal spoke with great purpose and dignity
about her amazing journey so far to a capac-
ity audience in the Woolgoolga Returned
Services Club auditorium.
She spoke about her passage through refugee
camps in Uganda, her role as a woman in
Sudanese culture and the conflict that arose
from her choice to challenge the cultural norms
imposed upon her by her family. Her choice to
not marry at the age of 14, her separation from
her family and the resulting placement in foster
care, demonstrates Awal’s strength and deter-
mination to pursue her dreams. She is deter-
mined to complete her education at Woolgoolga
High School and to go on to university to study
International Law and Human Rights and
Justice. We are all in awe of her strength and
sense of purpose in life and are certain that she
will achieve much success in the future.

Yesterday, the Talent Quest was once again an
outstanding success combining with business
studies students providing competitively priced
quality food from a variety of food stalls during
breaks. The Talent Quest is an excellent oppor-
tunity for our senior music students and
dancers to practice and showcase their skills.
The dancing was exceptional and awarded first
place and as always, I was impressed by the
quality of all of the performances. Thank you to
the local business Coopers Surf for providing
significant prizes for our most talented
students.
Awal Maker continues to grow as a public
speaker and spoke openly last Wednesday to a
large crowd at the Probus meeting. Around 80
community members were in attendance and
Awal was able to speak “off the cuff” and
answered many “deep” questions from an
informed audience. Thank you again to Carolyn
Byrne for her ongoing support and commitment
to our students.
I would like to thank in advance the many
teachers who will work with our Year 12
students over the upcoming holidays. We are
so fortunate to have such a dedicated staff and
it is no wonder that our last year’s HSC
academic results were of such a high standard.
Good luck to all cross country competitors in
the upcoming state championships.

Term 2 Dance News It's been a very busy term for our extra curricula Dance
ensembles with Coffs Harbour Dance Eisteddfod held in
our school hall on Friday 9th June and the NSW Public
Schools Central Dance Festival held at CEX Coffs on
Wednesday 14th and Thursday 15
th June.
In the lead up to these events both students and student
choreographers worked tirelessly before and after school,
weekends and gave up their lunchtimes to complete their
dances and make them “stage” ready. For some it was
another wonderful opportunity to perform on stage, but for
others it was their first time ever stepping onto stage and
performing in front of an audience. It brought me great joy
to watch these particular students come buzzing off the
stage full of energy and excitement after their successful
first performance, saying how much fun they had. Dance
brings so much joy, it's wonderful.
Woolgoolga High School is blessed to have so many
amazing dancers who spend many hours learning and
developing their technique and skills from local dance
studios. Over the years we have also been very fortunate
to have students who rise to the challenge of assisting
with choreographing for our school groups. This year
Delilah Thorncraft (Year 11) did a fantastic job creating
"Strength In Love" which received a Highly Commended
at the Eisteddfod. Well done to Dee and the students who
performed in this group. Delilah is currently studying Year
11 Dance. "I Don't Care" was choreographed by Alex
Rook (Year 10). After taking some extra dance classes/
workshops in Sydney, Alex wanted to create a dance with
a commercial jazz feel. She did a great job, as this style
was picked up and mentioned by the adjudicator.
The Aboriginal Ensemble and Indian Ensemble both
individually performed well. A wonderful representation of
two cultures that exist within our school community. I am
hoping to expand the Aborginal Ensemble throughout the
rest of this current year and into the next.
Particular mention to Parveen Kaur Bajwa of Year 12
who performed in many Indian dance performances
throughout her time at Woolgoolga High School. She is
an excellent role model to her peers in junior years. I
hope that once Parveen moves on in the coming
months, others will step up to continue this tradition
sharing their culture.
"Saying Less Is More" was a very moving piece by some
of the exceptional dancers from Woolgoolga High
School, with nearly all of these students studying Dance
as part of their Preliminary studies. These young ladies
demonstrated not only a wonderful performance but also
a wonderful display of dance as an art form, the purpose
of Dance within our curriculum. Holly Barker-McKenzie,
Rhianna Birch, Grace King, Georgia Rea and Delilah
Thorncraft all collaborated together to create this piece.
It explores how movement can be our voice. At times we
can find it hard to find the words to express the powerful
and raw emotions we feel, how they can be trapped
within us only to be told through movement. The piece
has been nominated for the NSW Public Schools State
Dance Festival. We should hear if we are successful in
the start of next year.
An exciting new initiative is about to commence at the
start of Term 3. Central Northern Beaches Combined
Primary Ensemble will bring together students with an
interest in dance from Years 5 and 6 across our local
primary schools. Students will participate in a number of
Sunday workshops to learn movement for a new dance
item together. This is a wonderful opportunity for
students from all primary schools to work together as
well as provide an excellent transition activity for
students.
The next performance opportunity for all of these dance
pieces is the Annual Concert of Excellence held on
Tuesday 29th August. Look out for more details in
upcoming newsletters. We hope to see you there.

Year 7 Sport Awards This week, six students (one from each class) were recognised for their positive contribution and effort in sport so far this year. Aspects such as positive communication, supporting peers, regular wearing of sport uniform and good sportsmanship were just some of the criteria for these awards. Students were presented with a backpack and drink bottle. These were able to be purchased from Amart Allsports via the Wool-goolga High School Community Kickbacks Program. Thank you to our community members who support our school through this program. We are also able to make regular purchases of other sporting equipment for distribution via our positive award system (Woopi draws at Monday assemblies).
Congratulations to the students who received this award; Quinn Watson, Thidar Aung, Heath Kissick, Jordan Alexander, Flynn Drady and Zander Oake.
As part of their Strength Training Unit, the three Year 9
Physical Activities and Sports Studies (PASS) classes
have ventured to the local gym Strong Fast Fit. Here
they have taken part in a variety of Strength and
Conditioning exercises and learnt some valuable skills
from Coaches Chris and Jackson, both ex-students
from Woolgoolga High School. For some students this
experience added to programs they already participate
in at local gyms and for others this was their first
experience with Strength training.
Thanks to both Chris and Jackson.

Year 12 HSC Physics students took the opportunity to visit Woolgoolga Electrical Substation as
part of an enrichment excursion to supplement their learning during the Motors and Generators
topic.
They learnt about the safety and technical aspects of electrical distribution to customers. The size,
danger and expense elements of the substation were fascinating. It was interesting to learn that
the most common cause of blackouts is from tree branches and bats!
Students in the picture include Elliotte Hyder, Braeden Malone, Mark Benetti, Bayley White and
Jasmine Hovermann. Thank you to Mr John Jenkins from Essential Energy for giving our students
the opportunity to link learning from the classroom to practical real life applications.
